You could have a 60% chance of winning every game in a 5 round event and you'd still only have a 7% chance of going 5-0 you faggot. If one guy turned up to an SCG event with an insane Mardu list that had a 70% chance to win each of 15 rounds, there's literally a 1.3% chance of him going 12-3. That's with a humongous chance of beating his opponent in every round. Without lots of people playing a deck, there's basically zero chance of it ever making results. That is unless someone popular does it.

Nobody is playing it because no one else is playing it, in essence. This is why it's very rare for new decks to appear in Modern and give it the appearance of a "solved" format. Even the best deck needs popularity to appear in top 8s.

Like that matters. Bob saw no play for fucking YEARS in Jund lists for absolutely no reason, and yet now suddenly he's an automatic inclusion in any black midrange deck. Pros make it up as they go along. And I very much doubt they test everything they can think of.
>>
>>48852719

>unlimited print run

You're a perfect dupe, they can increase the rarity to protect every last dime and you'll defend it because muh draft.
>>
>>48852777
>now suddenly he's an automatic inclusion in any black midrange deck.
No it's not. Abzan and Grixis doesn't play it. It's only played in Jund and Mardu (which pretty much doesn't exist).
>>

>>
>>48852801
No I'll not care because bitching on this site won't change shit. I'll buy my cards and that's it. Nobody is forcing you to play this game
>>
>>48852801
It's the same situation as the first Conspiracy was. As long as vendors are ordering boxes of Conspiracy, they'll keep printing it.
>>
>>48852831
>Abzan
Another good example of how arbitrary the metagame is. Remember when Pod got banned and Abzan was king of the format? Remember back when Jund was unplayable (back when lists were basically the exact same lists as they are now minus Kommand and some 4 drops)? Remember when Affinity was going to get banned and now it's dropped off the radar? Like damn son Magic's metagame is dominated by hype so much it's unreal.
>>
>>48852881
Your post makes zero sense because abzhan was king of the format until the pod ban, jund was never unplayable and affinity is still tier 1. But go ahead, take the meta by surprise and get that top 8 spot at a major with your mardu deck.
>>
Someone post the tarfire meme deck

>>48853048

>>

My entire point has been that without lots of people playing a deck, how good it is is largely irrelevant as to whether or not it makes a top 8 at a big event.
>>

Which is a total divergence from my complaints about the ethics of artificial scarcity and inflated card prices?

I mean, nobody is forcing WOTC and the secondary vendors into price gouging.

I always found that tapping out for him generally lost me the game. You can't under any circumstance tap out for a sorcery speed spell in Modern, because you're going to lose when you pass turn. Karn will land, you'll take 10 infect, you'd be forced to trade your Mentor into a Goblin Guide that'll just get pumped off a Command anyway while you eat 3 damage. The only 3 mana spell I'd ever tap out for in a deck like that is Lilly because she's also a removal spell.

Think of it this way, people are perfectly willing to play Dark Confidant and pay 2/3 for a free card. The 2 damage you might deal each turn, which is not even guaranteed, is paltry for free cards. You're probably better off playing Electrolyze and you're not doing great as a burn deck if you are.
>>
What are the rankings of various Midrange based decks? I wanna play Midrange, but cannot shell out over a grand for a Jund deck
>>
>>48856150
Having a thriving secondary market lets them essentially gauge how much their own products are worth. If every card sells for pennies, cracking packs is meaningless, but knowing they have cards that are worth $30 they can use as a hook gets people to buy. It's the backbone of the Masters sets, and it's integral to selling precons.
>>
noob question, but doesn't Eidolon end up hurting you a lot when playing burn? I get that it's extra damage but it seems like it would end up doing quite a bit of damage to you in some matchups
>>
>>48856150
Please believe that workers from wotc are benefiting from the secondary market. An "insider trading" if you will.
>>
>>48856219
i wouldnt consider path or anger of the gods specific hate cards vs dredge but i see your point

still 8 cards vs probably 30+ artifact hate cards?
>>
>>48856150
Technically the vendors buy boxes which they then sell to players along with singles. From wotc's perspective, their only mtg income comes from stores making big purchases of cases; no player actually buys direct and if they do, it has to be in such large quantities that they might as well be a vendor.
>>
>>48856312
Only about 10 of them are actually playable.
>>
>>48856308
turn 2 always play eidolon if you can.

your opponent will almost always try to get rid of it immediately, basically wasting a removal spell and taking 2 damage. if they can't deal with it, it's silly.

whenever i get an eidolon out, i usually stock burn in my hand while attacking with creatures. it makes for a game where your opponent has to slowroll while you're getting incremental damage and drawing burn.
>>
>>48856308
Yeah, but unless it's the burn mirror you don't care. You are the beatdown and if your opponents ignore your threats in order to attack you, they die; if they use removal to kill your threats, they generally take damage from the eidolon and don't add to the board.
>>
>>48856308
>>48856401
Eidolon can really only end up a problem if you're up against Affinity, and then it's a coin toss whether it's good or not.

If your opponent goes off early and slams their entire hand down before you have it out, then they have enough speed that Eidolon will be hurting you, but if you land it before they can vomit out their hand, it turns into a huge barrier.

Dear /tg/
I currently own a Dredge Deck (Life from the Loam/ Conflagerate version), and I'm thinking in selling it (got some people interested) since it's price "skyrocketed", and in the end, it might turn into "Nahiri 2.0 meme tier deck".
I'm thinking, with the money, building either Merfolks, Suicide Zoo or other good-tiered Deck (as long it's fun).
What are your opinions?
>>
>>48854004
Buy chinamen fakes
Jund em out
>>
>>48856730
G/W/b aggro is really fun and relatively affordable.
>>
>>48856985
Since I would sell the Dredge Deck, any deck around 600-800$ should be affordable (or around 400€ (MKM's prices) in the EU).
Althought GWB aggro sounds interesting, I prefer something a bit more "popular", in case I might think of sell it in the future.

>Serum Visions
>rare-shifted up

First of all, it's just an uncommon, don't get your panties in a twist.

Secondly, you stated it yourself. the set is designed to be drafted. That kind of draw+filtering at common would be just stupid.
>>
>>48857051
Suicide Zoo still seems pretty meme tier right now, probably not the best choice if you might resell IMO.

Merfolk is definitely the safe route.
>>
>>48857184
Seconding Merfolk, very reliable purchase
>>
>>48857051
Take a look at https://www.mtggoldfish.com/tournament/scg-modern-open-syracuse#online

You can see the standings, price and exact decklists of the top decks from the last Open, and even look at other recent tournaments for the same. This will let you get an idea for the average price of each deck and also a feel for how popular and consistent it is.

>>48857184
>>48857356
One of the things to consider is what specific cards are expensive in the prospective decks. As they said, Merfolk can be a fairly solid purchase because the most expensive cards you're going to be buying for it are Aether Vial and Cavern of Souls, both of which are crucial for various other decks. The key cards are likely never going to fall out of favor.

For a counter example, buying something like Tron could be a bit less favorable, because many of Tron's expensive cards are only relevant to Tron.

Deck's still fine an extremely Jund heavy meta area. I don't know how it matches up against Bant Eldrazi and Suicide Zoo seeing as they weren't prevalent when the deck started off.
>>
Why does no one play Mono U Tron? It seems to do well against the rest of the meta, playing better draw-go than Nahiri and having bigger threats than Jund can handle
>>
>>48860121
Good to know. Would you only run the version with Hierarch/Birds or is the manadork'less version ok too?
>>
>>48860181
People do play it, it's got some pros and cons like most tier 2 decks.
>>
>>48860181

It's not an easy deck to just pick up and has trouble against aggressive decks. However it has a really good matchup against control and combo decks so if your area is full of that then it's a good choice.

On another note Mono U Tron is the probably the best deck for making the most spiciest of plays. There was that time at the GP where some guy let a Liliana of the Veil tick up all the way to 6 then Mindslavered his opponent and then popped the ult and targetted his opponent and sacrificed everything of his. Also Mindslaver your opponent and then cast Epiphany at the Drownyard on their turn and make an empty pile and one pile full of cards and then take the pile full of cards.
>>
>>48860200

I personally prefer the Birds/Hierarch because i'm looking to slam down a big beater asap. I'm honestly not a fan of the dorkless versions but you can play them if you want to play a heavy disruptive version with more hand removal, i believe some lists even run more copies of Tidehollow Sculler. Hell some people even don't want to cast stuff when you have a Noble Hierarch out because they think you're packing a Stubborn Denial or something. If you ever get bored of it or if people start playing RG Tron in abundance in your area then you can easily transition the deck into a typical Abzan mid-range deck or even Abzan CoCo.
>>
>>48860315
Cool thanks. Im curious about the handhate version because I like the idea of T1 thoughtsieze T2 Sculler T3 Lox T4 Rhino T5 Liege but I was worried the deck would be too slow without the dorks.

On another note, DAE have the kind of autism I do where, for example, you dont want to run Hierarch in a Abzan deck because it taps for Bant mana and not Abzan? I know its a stupid reason but I get nauseous thinking about it.
>>
>>48860255
Holy shit that is the spiciest of spicy plays. Thank you
>>
>>48860441

It makes no difference if Noble Hierarch taps for Bant mana, what you really want it for is the fact that not only does it make mana but provides exalted and is 2/3rd's a copy of Birds of Paradise 5-8. Also it is extremely backbreaking to an opponent when you keep a hand full of some land, Hierarch, and Loxodon's and Liege's and you cast out Hierarch on your first turn and then they Thoughtseize with the only targets being Liege and Loxodon. You hit them for 5 damage on the swing on turn 2(exalted boost), this after the Thoughtseize is going to put them on 13 life, 12 if fetched, 10 if fetched for a shockland. The entire deck was designed to just purely hate on Jund and to a lesser extent the typical Abzan midrange deck at the time.
>>
How would y'all rank the different midrange decks in modern? Abzan, RUG, BUG, Jeskai, etc etc
>>
>>48859535
Some anons get very triggered by seeing lists. So if they spoil it it's their own damn fault.

>>48860095
It's alright but not needed. 2 is the prime number since I have plenty of othe black or red sources. My third that I might include I subbed for Lavaclaw reaches cause man lands in my meta are very useful.
>>
>>48858553
Blackcleave Cliffs does nothing that Dragonskull Summit doesn't do better. You have 14 lands that let Summit enter untapped. It's actually worth just counting on drawing one.
>>

Sure.

>>
>>48860928

Mate if you're playing Knight of the Reliquary you can easily slot in the Coralhelm combo in that list.
>>
>>48860948
I don't want to play a combo that requires a third color to play and for the most part fragile.
>>
>>48860948
I'm just trying to use knight as a cheap beatstick. A smiter 5-8.
>>
>>48860998

Alright fair enough, i'd look to throw in Nissa Voice of Zendikar somewhere in there. Also if you're going to play 4 copies of Flagstones then throw in a Ghost Quarter or two, you can always GQ your own Flagstones and grab out a Temple Garden as well as a basic.
>>
>>48860998
Not him but it would only require a single breeding pool and a single corralhelm for dank combos.
Noble, and also Knight, give you fixing too.

not that I don't love G/W hatebears, I'm just saying that going tricolor with your list wouldn't be too difficult as you're already 95% there.

Plus you already have the Sejiri Steppe to pull off the combo
>>

>>

except the hands you draw two summits. When you draw two cliffs it's completely ok, when you draw double summit you're screwed.
>>

wb tokens gives you access to: 1. wb manabase 2. inquisition +thoughtseize +path. As you can guess these cards come in handy in more than just one deck.
>>
>>48860928

Where's coralheim? If you want to keep it W/G then switch knight with liege, thalia with ooze and familiar with... Dunno man, fleecemane lion is an ok card. Also add company.
>>
>>48861084

Bogles, Grim Lavamancer powered burn, infect
>>
>>48861661
Ooze is probably in the sideboard but RIP is a much better slot. Leige is a cool card, and Thalia is a huge pain for combo decks.
His list is fine (minus the lack of corralhelms, COMBO OR BUST my man)
>>
>>48861661
>>48861755
Liege is in the sideboard. For graveyard hate I run 1 rip, 1 relic, 1 cage. I suppose I could make room for a second rest in peace but I really hate running multiples. The second rest in peace feels bad when drawn.
Sideboard

3 liege
1 rip
1 relic
1 cage
4 Kataki
3 kor firewalker
2 choke
>>
>>48861819
I have to agree with the others. If you don't want to run a Bant Knightfall you really should consider Wilt-Leaf in the main. It does so much for G/W aggro and since you don't pay CoCo you lose literally nothing from it.
>>
>>48861631
There is so much you need to invest to make junk out of tokens that you might as well straight out buy junk
>>
>>48862439
A playset of goyfs and lilis cost more than an entire tokens deck.
>>
>>48861819
>4 Kataki
You're already running lots of spot removal and Lingering Souls. Affinity shouldn't be that much of a problem for your mainboard.
>3 Kor Firewalker
Seems a little extreme considering Burn isn't that popular right now and Kitchen Finks arguably does a better job.
>>
>>48862695
Thats why you buy the playset of goyfs and lilis instead of some tier 4 deck.
>>

Where should one go if he's trying to buil a competitive deck?, A competitive thread.

>>48862915
Affinity for artifacts was my first thought when building the deck, and I did try out Thoughtcast and Broodstar among others, but I found out I often wanted to sacrifice as many clues as possible so that I could get a quick win with Ravager + Tracker combo. Plus, Ironworks already allows me to sac clues to cast stuff or sac more clues for free draw.

Still, it could potentially be a 2-of if I cut two lands. Thanks for the suggestion anon!

>>48853182
The problem is that there are not many spells that win you the game on the spot. When do you even plan on casting this? Sure, it can grab a Nahiri or another big walker from your opponent, but I don't see another reasonable situations where this is useful.

Dragonskull is the Checkland. It can't tap for anything turn 1.

There's nothing wrong with being 12, but you really shouldn't bring it up here on 4chan, because of the whole age limit to post thing.

I run a similar list also tweaked for my meta. Hi it's also on a budget too. Has worked really well with 22 lands if I'm honest.

I've been eating up all aggro and burn decks. Tron is a joke.
My favourite match up is jeskai nahiri. It's nice and long game full of surprises and usually ends up going either way.

So I'm getting back into mtg after a couple year hiatus, don't wanna dick around with standard anymore so thinking about just building a modern deck. I don't need anything tier 1, but I do want something that's reasonably competitive. mardu

>>
>>48869550

Choke and Ghost Quarter. Ghost Quarter is mostly there for you to hit your own lands being targetted by Spreading Seas and to hit their Mutavaults.
>>
>>48868598
Well mardu is shelling out one and a half month worth of rent and still ending up with a sub par deck.
>>
>>48870094
Choke isn't that good vs merfolk, they have vials and a plethora of non-island lands.

Hoogy has tried Ghostly prisons in the sb as a meta call, which can do a lot of work vs dredge and fish.

Anger of the gods and Wrath of god are also very good in this meta, although wrath is a bit slow and probably not what a company deck wants to do anyways.

Fog is also a great metacall, and seeing as how you're also in white colors you can run really good fog variants.
>>
mono black devotion is actually pretty fun, more people should play it
>>
>>48870492

Choke isn't a hard shutdown against Merfolk and on that I agree but Abzan CoCo is a deck that can slam it down turn 2 on the play and that can be the time you need to slow them down and assemble your board/combo. They may have Vial sure but sometimes they don't, Vial is only 4 cards out of 60 in the deck as opposed to Islands being 8-10 cards out of 60 in the deck and just because they have Vial doesn't make playing Choke any less of a bad option considering his meta is 25% Merfolk.
>>
>>48867287
Tell them to fuck off

Alt: Beat the fuck out of them with an actual good deck

Alt2: If they beat you to pieces, git gud
>>
>>48870654
True enough.

I really like Ghostly Prison and how it plays out though, especially against other decks.

A turn 2 Ghostly slows them down significantly, additional ones stack, and it really hurts dredge. Can slow down zooicide and maybe even bant eldrazi too.

Engineered Explosives is a nice wrath effect that I forgot about, quite expensive but it is really versatile in what it does.
>>
>>48870190
Mardu isn't bad by any means but it's no Jund. I'm saying this are a mardufag. We lack a beatstick like goyf and have to do a but more thinking with our removal since we lack abrupt decay and boardwipes like malestrom pulse. Green is stronk but white is a fun little utility colour that I enjoy.
>>
>>48870735

Actually come to think about it, Ghostly Prison isn't a bad idea either. As for Engineered Explosives, well good luck if that guy can find it. It's expensive and I can't any copies of it anywhere around here locally.
>>
>>48870927
Mardu and Sultai both suffer from the sad fact that they are by no means bad decks. But merely not as good as Jund. Mardu lacks the offensive threat Green/Goyf brings. While Sultai lacks the efficient spells like Terminate, and Bolt for removal and sideboard options. Losing battle for both decks
>>
>>48870927

They played against it and got destroyed by it and because of this, they think it is a good deck.

>>48867108

>>
>>48871578

Deflecting Palm is a card that doesn't get any respect. It's the one card that's always in the back of my mind when i'm up against Burn when playing Elves.

This is mostly because I myself used a line when playing Burn myself against Elves by using Boros Charm on a super pumped up Elf from Ezuri giving it Double Strike and then played Deflecting Palm on it. Since the first strike combat damage applied first the damage is redirected and it was enough to give me the win before any of the rest of the Elves hit. So I guess I next levelled myself so hard i've given myself PTSD.

None of my decks have a problem with tron. I'm just aware a chimp could play it

No thx. I don't have fun with the tried, tested and trite. I want to innovate.

>I can't think of a creature that is played in modern that bolt kills and shock doesn't.

>Architects of Will
>Eldrazi Displacer
>Ingot Chewer
>Kird Ape
>Prized Amalgam
>Reveillark
>Thragtusk
>Vexing Devil
>Wild Nacatl
>Wurmcoil Tokens

And of course there are all sorts of corner cases like a Mutagenic Growth'd 1/1, making Arcbound Ravager have to eat one more thing, doing more damage to Planeswalkers, etc.

You'll notice something though, the majority of those creatures are things that you really don't want to trade a bolt for most of the time, because you'll lose out. People don't like playing 3 toughness creatures unless they're either hyper efficient, like Kird Ape or Wild Nacatl, or it doesn't really matter if they die, like Prized Amalgam or Thragtusk. Creatures that would be good if not for having 3 toughness have been pushed out of the metagame because of Lightning Bolt, like the new Gisela. Creatures with 1 or 2 toughness are usually cheap enough, or offer something powerful enough, that they're worth the risk of dying to a Bolt or Shock effect.

Can anyone help me with this deck? I really don't know what directing to go with this. Either I should cut the discard and go full aggro backed by blood moon or up the curve and add more removal to go control/midrange. Which one do you guys think is best and which cards to you recommend?

i'm obviously going to turn this list into jund overtime, I just want to get my rakdos list as competitive as rakdos can be for the time being
>>
>>48867049
Look at the dates. The Eye ban was in March.
>>
>>48867049
No, no, it's not "still Tier 1". It's only Tier 1 now, it was Tier 0 before the ban.
>>
>>48867049
Yes, the deck doesn't have a turn 2 kill anymore but still pulls off some really queer shit.

What should I build that I could upgrade to Jeskai Nahiri? I'm not paying out the ass for tarns.

UW control the only option?
>>
>>48875966
Jeskai without nahiri
UW control doesn't really play that many of the same cards

Just buy the tarns in a few months when they're at like $50.

Got 2nd place at the last modern open, just draw go control with a couple planeswalkers and cliques and colonnades to kill em

A list similar to this was popular a while ago, but I think it was maindecking kitchen finks and wall of omens and dragonlord ojutai
>>
>>48876073
*5th place
>>
>>48852359
Why did his opponent accept it?

Its simple math, he should have 5 lands on turn 3 off of two explores.
>>
>>48876047
Yeah, that's more or less the plan.

>>48876073
>>48875988
I don't know, these are pretty much the cost as Jeskai Nahiri. Maybe I'll just wait it out, I have some of the pieces, Flooded Strands, 3/4 of the Nahiris... Most of the instants and soceries are relatively cheap and the few 1 of or 2 of 20~$ card is whatever, it's just the tarns, colonnades and the snaps really holding me back.

It wouldn't be ideal, but you could possibly get away with using 3 Deltas for the time being. You won't be quite as reliably able to get basic Mountain or Sacred Foundry, but it shouldn't be crippling.

you know the first conspiracy had brainstorm at common right?
>>
>>48878246
Brainstorm isn't actually as great as it sounds without shuffle effects.
>>
>>48877985
It will retain most of its value but will mostly likely go down for a while after it rotates out of standard
>>
>>48878297
i didnt draft much conspiracy I'm not sure of the shuffle effects it had or didn't have
>>
>>48878246
Without shuffle effects brainstorm doesn't filter. You end up drawing the same cards you would have in the end, unlike ponder or preordain or serum visions.
>>
>>48874169
Nigga
Splash white. There you go. You're a fully competent Mardu player and can now go toe to toe with the best of the format.
>>
>>48878320
A quick search of Conspiracy says there are 12 cards with "shuffle" in their text. It looks like the only way you would have been likely to shuffle away your Brainstormed cards would have been deliberately drafting the commons that cycle for basic lands, which aren't really amazing cards on their own.

>Sacrifice as part of the cost of a sorcery that you can't even get back from the yard
Sorry but it's nowhere near Pod.
>>
>>48879881
they would reprint pod if they wanted it to be like pod
although you get +2 cmc
>>
So, Ancestral in Nahiri or not?
>>
>>48880363
>Hey guys there's totally an upside to this card over Pod!
Boo-Hoogland will be back to playing Kiki Chord within a couple of weeks after he's tested against any deck running Mana Leak. Or once people start boarding Grafdigger's Cage against Dredge he'll realise that the deck is just running a sorcery speed Chord so can't go grab an answer in response to Cage.

>people are this stupid

Let's see both pod and evolution are sorcery speed. Both Sac and in exchange for a repeatable effect via pod, you get less limitations in what you can search you can grab up to 2 higher.

I'm not saying Evolution is god tier but it has it's place and I wouldn't be surprised at all if it found a home in some modern deck.
