>not making your character with the rest of the group

What are the negative consequences for not making your character with the rest of the group? Assuming we're talking about the kind of game where there's a "final boss," I mean.

Starting too far from the train station.

Is this meant to be literal or metaphorical? If literal, the DM can just say you left earlier and you got there at the same time as everyone else.

Not him, but in my mind, it's better to make them all together or all separately.

If everyone make their characters separate, it's fine, and they all learn each other's strengths and weaknesses during the campaign.

If two players work together, their characters become the dynamic duo of the group, whether it be for comic relief or for a serious plot, it will usually take center stage.

If all players but one or two make their characters together, those left out are either extremely detatched from the party, or become edgelords who are willing to sacrifice the party first above all.

If everyone makes them together, you get either an extremely balanced group, a chaotic mess, or a gimmicky party (all monks from different alignments, ect.)

Characters with conflicting backstories
Characters who would never work with specific other characters (can be good if handled well.)
Role saturation.

Sort of had this happen in a series of l5r campaigns. He was an investigator-type character who as a PC believed that truth and honesty were the highest virtues, and later on as an antagonist had become a serial killer traveling from court to court exposing nobles' secrets and shaming them into seppuku. He wasn't the final boss, but a persistent threat for a huge chunk of the campaign until the villain pulling his strings was revealed.

You run the risk of players making very similar characters, for one.
There's also a distinct risk of making characters who are totally incompatible from a role-play perspective.
Lastly, you might have a scenario where the player-characters as a whole just don't mesh with the setting or story planned by the GM at all.

These things can be mitigated by planning and careful instruction, but if you intend on getting with a group and playing together anyway, there's no reason not to work out character concepts as a group before you begin.

This is happening in my campaign right now.

>group started as some criminals exiled from their homeland
>one of them is a warlock in service to Bel
>was chosen by Bel because reasons, fights against the requests of his master while still using his power
>player leaves the group due to personal issues
>his character is accused of murder that another character committed (that character died), gets sent literally down river to the capital
>is released before the party gets there
>timeskip forward
>go north to check out some weird goings-ons in the woods
>animals are freaked out
>local monstrous humanoids are getting antsy
>encounter a portal with devils opened by aforementioned warlock of Bel

Long story short, he's a general for Bel helping the Nine Hells invade the material plane.

Good luck beating an Overgod with the power to control fate itself.

That would require him to solve for a complex mathematical theorem about departure and arrival times of two groups, and I highly doubt he could derive the movement speed of each character solely based on their Dexterity scores!

>>48818799
>boss of campaign is pc from previous campaign
>turns out to be a low-level boss, extremely underwhelming, and played like an asshole by the DM to boot
>"Man, anon, your character was a total bitch, wasn't he?"

Not until the GM got his mitts on him, no...
