well I can't say it's my favorite, but Juggler is objectively the best class in the game if your goal is to get every badge/medal

PTU by far. Both systems are crunch-heavy and have their own unique problems, but PTA has far more holes and problems than PTU does.

I've never gotten to play in a game past second level, but I'm a fan of Trickster/Provocateur

Probably Johto in my experience. When attracting new players, a lot of them will want to play in one of the first three regions, but Kanto is pretty boring as a world, and Hoenn is half ocean but can be fun with a good GM. Johto has a good mix of regions and town lore to play with when worldbuilding.

Unless your group is emotionally attached to PTA, PTU is easier to run and play, with fewer issues and less work needed to get around them, so I'd recommend that if you can.

I come up with a lot gimmicky builds (such that certain PTU edition changes have been openly my fault), but a build I'd really like to play sometime is an Ace/Duelist/Taskmaster and go for some risk-reward that way.

GSC era Kanto-Johto is best for a long campaign, since you have access to a huge number of memorable locations, and between the two regions you'll appeal to most players who aren't Hoennbabby garbage. If they really love trumpets just focus the story on the Whirl Islands so they can get their fill of surfing around forever.

PTU is a d6 system, it just uses d20 for Attack rolls. d6 is used for skills and damage, which encompasses everything else you'd ever roll for.

None, in my experperience you wont get past the first few levels on neither. PTA is unplayable, the balance issues are rampant and the inconsistency between Trainer and Pokemon stats will make battles confusing, long and tedious, PTU is not much better, it feels like a patched up version of its predecessor but this created issues of its own.

You wont get to finish it, people playing PTA/U get super excited about designing their own region, creating brand new gyms and elites and geogrephy but players rarely get to the secong gym before the game is dropped.

Not who you are responding to, but I had a similar experience with PTU, the longest campaign we played lasted four months and just because I GM'd it, before that we never got past the fifth session or so.

From what I gather the crunch is what keeps most groups from fully enjoying PTU in general.

If your group doesn't like a lot of crunch in their combat, neither system is good. My experience with the B-tier Pokemon games like Pokerole is not great, but from readthroughs they've all had similarly shoddy mechanics propped up by 'but it's narrative!', so play at your own risk.

One of them has C-Tech expanding glitch pools. Go ahead and play them, but if you're looking for a better game, you might be sorely disappointed.
