Ameritrash is best girl edition

What have you recently picked up? What are you looking forward to? Any old games you recently tried for the first time, or for which your love has recently been rekindled?
>>
>>48674810
Amazon's sale yesterday netted me Cosmic Encounter, Broom Service and Rebelllion G54 all at ~45% discount between the three, all had been in my wishlist for a while.

Looking forward to Santorini being shipped.
>>
I played a lot of scythe last week. Pretty great, anyone else had a go with it yet?

I'M FLAT BROKE MAN I GOT NO MONEY I'M FLAT BROKE MAN

And still I plan on ordering this shit as soon as GMT replies to my mail
I also played 1714 Case of the Catalans recently, unfinished game but tested all the important mechanics. Didn't get ot midgame so Barcelona was looking very stiff.
>>
You guys sure take your time to respawn.
Question what are the differences between the 1st and the 2nd edition of mage wars arena?
>>
>>48675636
Played several two player games. I can see it being better at more, but I've great fun with it. Immersed in the Olympics atm so not going to be playing anything for a while.
>>
>>48676435
Box size mainly. 1e board folded in 4ths, 2e folds in 6ths, and box got smaller. Contents are pretty much the same, just a couple extra spell cards and errata
>>
>>48674810
spent $300 on x-wing yesterday, having a little buyers remorse today realizing what else I could have gotten for that money.
>>
>>48676703
Do you think it will worth the extra cost for those spells and erratas. I'm debating myself between a "used copy" of the first edition and a sealed box of the 2nd edition

Also how it compares arena with academy? I mean how different is the feeling between games?
>>
Hey, is Shogun/Wallenstein good? If so, which version is better?
>>
>>48674810
I buy board games and puzzles from Marbles with junky-like frequency. I have Otrio, New York 1901, Chronology, Nefarious, Dr. Eureka, Pengoloo, Letter Tycoon, Oh Snap, and Tapple. I might be forgetting some but those are all the ones I can see from where I'm sitting.
>>
>>48676986
When you say puzzles, do you mean jigsaw puzzles or something else?

I've never been one for jigsaw puzzles but I love logic puzzles and could see myself loving ones with material parts, or even games centered around logic puzzles and mysteries.

For this reason I want to get Time Stories eventually and play with some friends.
>>
>>48676986
And Abalone and Letter Tycoon.

I might have a problem.
>>
>>48677015
I mean stuff like Rush Hour. Mentally challenging stuff for one player.

For that, I have the Sherlock, Penguins on Ice, Back Spin, Pathwords, Shell Game, and Katamino.
>>
>>48676826
If you're not a stickler for shrink wrap, a used copy will play exactly the same, if it's complete and in good shape you won't feel any difference.

Arena is a bit heavier, a bit longer, a bit more complicated, a bit fiddlier, but it's a better experience if you enjoy the enormous customizability and depth it offers.
Academy is virtually "Mage Wars light" with streamlined rules, it plays faster and is friendlier for newcomers. If your gaming group dislikes heavier stuff, try this instead.
It's also worth mentioning Academy is compatible with Arena, but not vice versa
>>
>>48676762
Ever since I got into X-wing, I have been using "But what if I put that on X-wing instead" to stop myself form (more) unnecessary purchases. I think it actually has a positive impact on my economy at this point.

>>48676441
Never tried it two-player, but I can see how that might give you too much free space, limiting player interactions somewhat.
>>
>>48677101
I'm trying to develop a competitive scene here where I live but how you seem to suggest I should try to get Arena first and then if people are willing, go with Arena.

What with Battlegrounds?

do LCG's belong on /bgg/? If so anybody hype for the new Arkham Horror Card Game? I always wanted to get into Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, but it was so far into it's life i couldn't warrant the purchase. This looks like it will scratch my mythos itch though.
>>
>>48677260
>do LCG's belong on /bgg/?
I have no trouble with it.
personally I like LoTR because of it "no preassure" motto to buy everything and also Doomtown because it thematic (R.I.P. and Fuck AEG)
>>
>>48677313
yea i went all in on doomtown and learned a week later that it was being discontinued. i guess that's ok because it's a good game with a lot of cards and will give me a lot of enjoyment but still kinda stings. I guess it's ok because i'm also keeping up with 40k conquest and a game of thrones. drop doomtown and pick up arkham.
>>
>>48677260
I watched a game of it being demo'd at GenCon. In true Arkham Horror fashion, the two guys playing it basically failed at everything so if you enjoyed the original AH and don't mind going insane and losing alot, it looks just fine.
>>
>>48677224
Yeah, I enjoy Arena immensely, but my AP-challenged friends struggle with it and they just never really bought into it so when it hits the table (rarely), it's always me lending them pre-made decks, which they don't "get", thematically or tactically.

So if your friends dive into it with you, Arena won't disappoint, it's really good, deep and meaty. If they like faster-paced games with less decisions, Academy might be better.
>>
>>48677394
I still sad that no game will come up close enough of what was doomtown
>>
>>48677773
fuck yea. sounds like the bees knees. At first, i thought the chaos bag mechanic (chit pull) might be stupid and too random to determine test success, but after learning more about the possibilities of it, i kind of like it. i guess you can customize the difficulty with it, and who knows the possibilities of doing weird things with it in relation to special quest events and stuff.
>>
>>48677790
I'll go for both but since I'm taking about normies academy might be there best choice for me
>>
>>48677935
That bag was what really did it.

When the girl demoing it said the modifiers they could pick out were anywhere from -4 to +1 for this game, i knew it wasn't gonna end well haha.
>>
What with Arkham Horror LCG? I mean so far I've read FFG is trying to mix LoTR LCG and a pen and paper RPG (you carry status and sometimes backdraws at the end of each chapter)

also someone has seen Star Wars Destiny (that dice game) in GenCon?

I thought strongly about Star Wars Armada. But I resisted the urge. I did however snag 'Deception - Murder in Hong Kong' which was on my buy list. (I blame STEEV for that since he mentioned liking it. On a side note: I blame STEEV for lots of things he couldn't have had any control over. Ah, the beauty of the internet.)

Pic related for X-Wing Anon...
>>
>>48677394
>I guess it's ok because i'm also keeping up with 40k conquest

Complete your collection in short order then. It seems likely that FFG is no longer going to be doing new additional content in the 40K setting. At least for the foreseeable future.
>>
>>48679845
given that they just announced a miniature combat game which more or less is direct competition to GW, yeah I'd say the 40k licence is on the out.
>>
>>48679959
Yeah, that might have something to do with it. And considering that AoS seems to be getting pretty 'Meh' results in a lot of places, it isn't surprising that other organizations are looking to eat GW's lunch...

>>
Speaking of card games that have died multiple deaths, weren't we supposed to be getting L5R info at GenCon?
>>
>>48677773
I once played a game of Arkham Horror where your character could recover a sanity point if you finished a drink. It was great.
>>
>>48680224
No L5R info this year apparently.
>>
>>48677260
Oh, this should be interesting. Arkham Horror always did require a ton of space to play. Reducing it to a card game should make things a lot simpler.
>>
>>48680339
I gather your character was sane as shiz by the end and you have absolutely no idea how the game turned out. ;)
>>
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2016/8/5/its-us-or-them/

Who else hype?
Its a goddamn Enemy Within expansion for XCOM
>>
>>48680224
Ffg made it clear when they bought the license we wouldn't be hearing anything about it until 2017
>>
>>48677935
My only problem with what's been shown so far is the "instant fail" chit, but atleast there's ways to mitigate it, and since you have three actions you can just try again.

I'm sad that it doesn't support 4 players off a single core set though. Any ways around it?
>>
>>48674810
>this maximum haram op

Well /bgg/ after a long hiatus from this thread I had a massive board game jam session, played tons and tons and tons of shit.

Finally kicked off trains with a bunch of 1v1 games and a 3player game. Bluemoon Legends, Maximum Throwdown Overload, Guildhall, and got to make out with actual best girl Alien Frontiers.

Daily reminder that Alien Frontiers is the best worker placement game ever made.

How about you guys?
>>
>>48680086
>And considering that AoS seems to be getting pretty 'Meh' results in a lot of places

>selling more than WHFB ever was

you folks are out of date with your memes, even on /tg/ the aos general is moving as fast as the 40k thread while the whfb barely trundles along.

Also, I bought the duke recently and my friend hates it, someone just end my life please.
>>
>What are you looking forward to?
Tragedy Looper expansion and Battlecon: Trials (if only for the promos, I was not impressed by what I saw from the playtest forums). Contemplating the Dead of Winter expansion, but it really depends on what it improves.

Outside of that, thinking of getting Dominant Species but a 3 hour euro is a hard sell for my group.
>>
>>48674810
>Recent pick-ups
Last thing I've picked up was Pax Porfiriana, haven't had time to play it yet unfortunately :(

>Looking forward to
As far as unreleased things go - Zimby Mojo, Cave Evil: Warcults, codex for Duel of Ages II
>>
Does anyone know how long late pledges will be open for the Set Rotation expansion for Millennium Blades? I'm waiting till next paycheck (2 weeks, hooray bi-weekly) to pick it up, but if there's any real risk of it no longer being available then I'd rather just get it now. I want to do the pledge so I can pick up all the mini expansions.

And on that note, I've played Millennium blades a couple times now, and it is absolutely fantastic. Just played a game where Dr. Balance hit the table in the second and third round, absolutely threw everything off in the best way.

Anyone have a favorite store setup? Favorite combos? Favorite anything relating to this lovely, lovely game?
>>
How exactly does one get into Kingdom Death? I looked around on the site and it seemed like mostly everything was sold out/no longer available. I'm also curious as to whether or not you NEED all those figures or if there's a simpler (by which I mean cheaper) version. I can handle shelling out for the figures if the game is definitely worth playing, but either way, how do I go about even getting into the game?

Falling Sky, recently-ish. Haven't had the opportunity for a 4-player game of it yet, so definately looking forward to that!

>What are you looking forward to?
In no particular order:

Pendragon: The Fall of Roman Britain
Time of Crisis
Pericles: The Peloponnesian Wars
Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage
Colonial Twilight: The French-Algerian War, 1954-62
Welcome to Centerville

So yeah, lots of GMT stuff...

Backed Walking Dead no sanctuary and backing Evil Dead 2. I'm completely broke.

>What are you looking forward to?

Right now I'm pretty excited about "Last Friday". And that's about it for releases that are coming soon-ish. I'm also pretty curious about that Mansions of Madness reprint.

>Any old games you recently tried for the first time, or for which your love has recently been rekindled?

Tried for the first time : Not really that old, but a game I've owned it for a long time without playing is Steam Park. And it's good fun !
Rekindled : I hadnt played Dream Factory in a long long time and I had fun (but boy do I SUCK at auction games)
>>
>>48684717
I could have sworn the full Kickstarter pledge was $400. But I guess you don't need that to play, just the base set.
>>
>>48685401
IDK I just hear people kicking themselves for not getting KD when it was $100, assumed it was the base set KS pledge.
>>
>>48685505
Just looked it up, base game is $100, $400 is three $155's, $155 is "Survivor – You’ll receive the Kingdom Death: Monster boxed game, the two Kickstarter exclusive plastic miniatures Adam & Anna Explorers of Death, the Kingdom Death t-shirt, and the digital art book."
>>
>>48681980
>you folks are out of date with your memes, even on /tg/ the aos general is moving as fast as the 40k thread while the whfb barely trundles along.

The AoS general thread doesn't have jack-shit to do with the fact that GW's overall sales are still declining. My FLGS has been shrinking their GW section with a sign that reads "If you don't see what you want we can order it". So much for those 'impulse buys' that GW counted on. Meanwhile their RPG and board games selection has increased quite nicely.

>Also, I bought the duke recently and my friend hates it, someone just end my life please.

Time to get some better friends Anon.
>>
>>48674810
>Recently picked up
MoM 2nd Ed and the Grizzled expansion
>Looking forward to
The above, plus more Arcadia Quest hopefully this week
>Tried any old games
I did play 2nd edition of Innovation this weekend instead of the usual 3rd that I own. I only noticed a few differences actually. Still really enjoyed it and it was funny how playing with a new experienced friend adapted both of our playstyles

Also played Tales of the Arabian Nights, which went over really well, and a few rounds of ONUW. It's still really a joy to teach that one to new players
>>48675636
Nope. Funny how at the time I thought I knew 3 people who kickstarted it, but only one has offered to play, once (and I was away that weekend)
>>48682577
>Trials
Yaaas
>Dominant Species: 3 hour euro is a hard sell
If you don't have your brainpower cranked to 100% for all 3 hours you'll get absolutely stomped, so it's too stimulating imo for your players to get bored. Plenty of smashing and killing to be had for those players who need that. Just make sure no one has AP
>>48682790
>Pax
Nice. Print out and laminate the 11x17" player aids from BGG and tell your players to watch the how to play video. Otherwise it will never come together
>>
>>48680569
Awwww shit. That's going on the shortlist.
>>
I've played Race for the Galaxy quite a bit online, but am interested in picking up a copy to play with friends. I'd also like to get an expansion to spice things up for myself, but should I just forget all that and get Roll for the Galaxy?
>>
>>48674810
>What have you recently picked up/looking forward to?
Captain Sonar, Star Trek: Ascenscandscancysc, and Cry Havoc all on Pre-Order because I'm lazy as shit.

>Old games recently tried for first time or rekindled?
Not really, but finally (FINALLY!) got to play Mare Nostrum this weekend. Holy shit, I'm impressed. Ridiculously elegant. There's no spare weight on these bones, but it never feels like there's any thematic elements missing. Super tight, even seemingly tiny abilities or bonuses are absolutely enormous. Strong politics, incredible trade and economy system, seemingly very simplistic combat that's actually VERY tactical - and much more predictable than most dice combat systems.
This thing is going to see a lot of play.
Just not on this heretic peasant-tier table for ants.
>>48676435
It's a slow thread, a long respawn actually helps the new thread start off well.

>>48676762
I love x-wing, but I'm so ADD with games that this same argument always convinces me to buy 6-7 new games instead of several hundred on XW models

Chaos in the Old World, Dune/Rex, Infamy, Cyclades, Kemet, Mare Nostrum, Blood Rage all have significant euro elements or have had the trash surgically removed from their murrica, and play very well while also executing their theme fantastically.

Awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for. Which would you recommend I get first if I expect to play a lot with my family?

My sister's favorite game is Zombicide: Black Plague. My mother and stepfather really like Ticket To Ride. I'm trying to push their boundaries a bit.
>>
>>48689301
Depends most on your most common range of playercounts, really.
CitOW really wants four, or five with the expansion. Can play with less, but the mechanics are designed to have all gods in play.
Dune/Rex have the same issue, but are targeted at six - but if you can hit that number they're absolutely fantastic.
Cyclades and Kemet are great across their entire spectrum of playercounts, are pretty easy to teach, and play progresses very quickly. Solid picks.
Mare Nostrum also scales well between 3-5 (or 2-6 with the atlas expansion) and has more diplomacy and trade than kemet or cyclades.
Blood Rage I haven't played enough to be certain about playercounts, but it worked pretty well at five - just be warned that it's more of a drafting game than it looks like on the surface. Not a bad thing, just don't want to be surprised by it if that's not for you.
>>
>>48689229
Better divorce the bitch desu senpai
>>
>>48689568
I'll probably get Cyclades or Kemet, then Mare Nostrum, and then maybe the others after that, then. We play with everywhere from three to five when we do play.

Once I get some more friends into gaming beyond Catan and light card games, I'll swing for Dune or Rex, and maybe Blood Rage.
>>48689587
I think the "cunt" in question in that post is probably the person who shipped it to them, not the wife who scoured the globe for the game.
>>
>>48689971
You could describe both as cunts, just one with affection.

>recent pickups
Got out of Gencon with the wallet intact, and copies of Survive, Coconuts, couple of the 2-5 Haba games, loads of sleeves/dice, and finally got a copy of X-wing as a b-day gift.

>looking forward to
Talked to the FFG guys, apparently the GoT/Cosmic stuff that was announced/demo'd was "a very early prototype" so there's a good chance they swap out the stills, gameplay looked nice so I think that's instant wishlist. Went to check out the copy of Santorini that was supposed to be demo'd but no one was ever in the kickstarter/CAH room with it, guess I'm waiting til reviews come out before I buy in on that one.

>old stuff
Got a chance to play my new copy of For Sale, I'm still pissed at Iello for making the coins too small but it's such a nice filler and the art kicks ass. Not quite as old, got to demo Medieval Academy because Iello's event center still can't get their shit together and had 0 copies of Wolrd of Yo-Ho on hand. Honestly I think I'd rather own it than 7 Wonders, and get something like Trains, or Blood Rage when I want meatier drafting.

Just received the "Band of Brothers" series, 'Screaming Eagles', 'Ghost Panzer', and 'Texas Arrows'. Kickstarter backed way back when, arrived today, only 10 months late. Speaking of, any wargamers here?

Also expecting "Magic: The Gathering - Arena of the Planeswalkers"' expansions, 'Battle for Zendikar' and 'Shadows over Innistrad' soon. Bought them on sale on Amazon a few days ago.

I impulse bought a game called Flock today because I visited a shop during my lunch break.

Was at GenCon, had an amazing time. Ended up coming home with a bundle of new games:

> Ekö
Interesting abstract game where you play as a sand robot and control troops to conquer the board and score points with your villages or castles. It follows a basic "two power beats one, three beats two" formula but allows a troop of the weakest level (1) to defeat a troop with the highest level (4) to sort of give the game a cyclical balance. Pretty neat game!

> Vast: the Crystal Cavern
Picked up my Kickstarter and got a chance to play a round, it's a very cool game. Completely asymmetric playstyles for all characters leads to some very cool set ups and possibilities. I'm excited to play it more!

> Tides of Madness
Sequel to Tides of Time, plays very similarly with an added "sanity" system for a bit more interaction and care necessary. Pretty okay, a worthy if not nearly identical follow-up and decent value for $12.

> Grimslingers
Haven't played yet, but looks cool as hell.

> Sushi Go Party
Haven't played yet but I liked Sushi Go so it's some more of that.

They shoulda just called it Trove and told Trion Worlds to go fuck themselves.
>>
>>48688713
That's a pretty board. I've been looking for a big strategy game that isn't Space themed, looks like this might be the ticket.

>no Hiaspania or Libya
Weren't they kinda important to Mediterranean trade and empire-building?

Also what's up with blue? Are they just completely shreking everyone?
>>

Is that what happened? I glossed over the name-change updates since it didn't make a huge difference to me. I do think Trove is a cooler name though.

There's a successful and semi-famous indie puzzle/platformer/adventure game series called Trove. I'm not sure whether they raised a fuss or Leder changed it preemptively to prevent drama while the game was still young enough to do it easily.
>>
>>48699637
Trion raised a fuss, Leder actually consulted legal council and was recommended to change it. I agree that he should've told them to fuck off, though; single words aren't exactly trademarkable and the two properties have literally nothing to do with one another.
>>
>>48700645
Even if they're trademarkable it doesn't cross media lines unless Trion actively has a Trove board game in development, or it can be proven that Vast was somehow trying to profit off Trove.

FINALLY picked up Cosmic Encounter, and picked up Dominion: Intrigue while I was at it. It might be a while before any new games considering I'm trying to piece together a Watmachine army, but I can imagine getting Dom: Prosperity pretty soon.

Waiting to actually get a game of CE played, gotta wait till Tuesday though.

For such a light, fast game, but is there a lot of twisting of balls. Bidding by an additional dollar ot two than expecting and people around the table groan, flipping your 22 for a 0, mind games on whether the players with 29 and 30 will simultaneously flip for the 15 or not (and top player possibly using this bait to nab the 15 for a lower property).

If you're playing with six players you add an additional board with the iberian peninsula.
Libya can be seen under Cartage's control here (black).

Blue isn't a player color, all trade/resource generating structures are blue, and all gold/culture generating structures are brown.

It's a fantastic game, but it's also a lot faster than something like Twilight Imperium, more on the scale of two hours than 4-8, so might be too short to properly scratch that itch for you.

>post gencon
Ended up snagging Bloodborne, Imhotep, the Grizzled expansion, and Conflict of Heroes: Guadalcanal from CSI's nick and dent for a whopping half off MSRP. I felt it would be bad form to ask the designer at his booth to sign it so I'll wait until next year I guess.

Out of the list they only one I got a chance to play was Imhotep, but it was that one game that convinced me to buy it. The main appeal was that while you can try and plan what you want to do by placing your bricks down on boats it's still ultimately a gamble what your opponents will do. My friend got particularly fake-livid over the fact that I sent his and the other 2 players' blocks on a ship to the obelisk, where it didn't affect their standings at all, simply because it was a worst move for them rather than a best move for me.

I'm really, really looking forward to Bloodborne though. I didn't even know it existed until last weekend but after reading the rules I'm convinced it's going to be a good time, especially since my group is gamers. Same goes for Grizzled since that was a hit with our group from day 1. CoH I'm going to take some time to learn; it's my branch off into the deeper territory of wargames so I want to make sure I learn it right the first time.

The only thing I was particularly sad about was playing both AGoT and A:NR at Gencon and thereby missing a chance to pick up Flame of the West and play the LotR LCG event, but I know they have a second one coming around with a playmat, and I'll just order FotW online with this cute-ass game I found called Wolf & Hound. Seriously, look how fucking cute this game is.

Hey /bgg/, Pandemic or Pandemic Legacy?
I can play Legacy as a normal Pandemic game? With the Expansions?
Whats the diference in contents?
>>
>>48705663
I'd say depends on how stable and regular your group is - if you don't reliably have the same set of people the legacy element may either feel less solid or the game might just not get played because you're waiting for the right people.

But I believe legacy can still be played once you've finished all the legacy elements, it just stops changing.
>>
>>48705663
You can play Legacy like normal Pandemic, but not after you play a game of the campaign. After that you can only continue the campaign. Then when the campaign is over you can't play anymore.

You can't really use the Pandemic expansions because the components don't match. They aren't compatible with the campaign anyway.

The difference in contents is a secret for spoiler purposes but the difference in price is 20 to 40 bucks more for Legacy

I've only played Andean Abyss once and Falling Sky a couple of times, but I've really liked those few games. Already considering picking up A Distant Plain, Colonial Twilight, and maybe Pendragon. Regarding Pendragon that will probs depend on how complicated it turns out, I've looked a little at Fire in the Lake and everyone keeps going on about how much more complicated it is than other COIN titles, but I'll probably have to give the rules- and playbook a look at the very least before I decide on that. As for Cuba Libre and Liberty or Death, the subject matters don't really interest me that much.

Anybody know any card or board games where the odds look like they lean one way but actually lean the other? Like the Seven-Card and Nine-Card Hustles, for instance.
>>
>>48708289
I'm in the Pendragon playtest group. There's a couple of big changes:
>Variable win conditions for the two COIN factions, depending on their current relationship.
>Pivotal Events (like in FITL) that don't actually block the current event.
>You have to declare your spaces before you execute the Command/SA.
Other than that, the board is gorgeous, and the components have a lot of potential.

As for FITL, it's not so much that it's complicated, as there's just a lot going on all at once. I'd consider it no more complicated than ADP. I'd also suggest picking up Cuba Libre, as it's compact and its smaller size helps teach the mechanics of the game easier.

Huh, interesting regarding the win conditions. Seems like it would add another layer of depth to the game or? Can't say much to Pivotal Events, as they've not been in either AA or FS. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but wrt the need to declare spaces for commands/SAs though, is that due to (some?) factions having an intercept command? Pretty sure I read that in an interview with the designer somewhere...

>Other than that, the board is gorgeous, and the components have a lot of potential.
Man the FS board as well, and from what I've heard the LoD board is also great. FS components, well, standard COIN cubes, cylinders, and octagonal cylinder-ish insurgency troops! And the larger leader cylinders ofc.

>As for FITL, it's not so much that it's complicated, as there's just a lot going on all at once. I'd consider it no more complicated than ADP. I'd also suggest picking up Cuba Libre, as it's compact and its smaller size helps teach the mechanics of the game easier.
Cool, will have to look a bit more at FiTL then it seems. I'll... consider CL. My current gaming group is a bunch of people I've regularly played with since uni for like probably 9-10 years now, and most of us don't mind heavier rules/games.

After hearing all the bad rap about Asmodee, I decided to look at their .us site. Everything took a price hike. Everything. These douchenozzles are taking the "games are luxury items and you should pay accordingly" to heart.
"Big boxes" from $70 to $100, games I bought for $40 are now $50. Card games I remember went for $20 are now $25-$30. Expansions cost almost as much as the parent game... (7 Wonders for $50? Fuck off...)

Right now though, when rave reviews from the right people ensure that a game is going to sell out it's entire first couple production runs almost regardless of cost, I think they'll see very little loss because of it among their higher-demand products - but it'll definitely hurt the more mediocre stuff.

>Then when the campaign is over you can't play anymore.

That's not really correct. Once the campaign is over the game doesn't evolve anymore. But you can still play additional games with the board in its final game state. That said, a large part of the 'legacy' style game appeal is the evolving game state, and the finality of the end state. I can't say I'm a fan personally, but that doesn't make it a bad thing for those who are. I'd just rather buy games I can replay at will.
>>
>>48706310
What I'm saying is, 'Do you what me to see if I can send a copy to you at a reasonable postage rate, and make it happen?' Obviously I'd expect you to cover the game cost / postage, but I'm willing to do it if you can't find a copy in your country (or at least one that isn't vastly over-priced).

It's unlikely; Petersen despite coming off like a bit of a retarded douche in the whole price hike fiasco is a very smart businessman. Killing off the OGS wasn't about saving local stores, it's about getting those stores to do more tourneys, and getting more players into subscription model games. They want the EA customers who are ok paying $50 for the new CoD/Madden/etc box that hasn't changed much, and lets them get more cash outta you. Side benefit it allows them to convince Target to sign on for more games, because they'll be able to discount but no one else will (except maybe Amazon).

Game has a distribution model using blind, random content boosters, like MtG or other collectible card / dice games.
>>
>>48711836
The theme feels pretty well integrated into the game imo, both with the event cards which are plenty flavorful, and mechanical aspects such as the popularity mechanic and interaction between mechs and workers. And the games I played always had a lot of arms-racing and border tension before the sessions few actual conflicts broke out, which felt appropriate for the era somehow.

Messing around with Millennium Blades store deck. Just found this snippet by Eurazeo, the investors owning 79% of Asmodee's stock.

>Purpose:
>The purpose of Eurazeo is to identify, accelerate and enhance the transformation potential of the companies in which it invests, even long after its exit. An active and committed shareholder, Eurazeo assists its holdings in the long term – 5 to 7 years – with control over exit timing. An extensive role enabling it to combine business development and corporate social responsibility."

The "even after its exit" bit means they'll just pump Asmodee's stock value as high as they can while absorbing as many companies as they can to dominate and/or control the market and then sell to the highest bidder (pls Hasbro) before the bubble pops.
>>
>>48712325
Sad to say they will llikely succeed.
Can designers be persuaded not to let their games fall into Asmodee's tentacles?
Perhaps the way to battle the corporate encroachment is not to let them have any games to publish...
>>
>>48712469
It depends on whether their greed leads to them offering subprime deals to designers, which is entirely possible.

Hey guys, my friends and I recently started playing Chaos in the Old World. It's great, but the Slaanesh player often seems to have a hard time (especially if Tzeentch is in a good spot and starts pre-empting him with stuff like the "discard 2 cards lol" spell). Does anyone have any advice? We've only got in a few games so far so I guess we might figure it out on our own (at first we had issues with people figuring out Nurgle as well but that's resolved now).

So basically does anyone have any generic advice for Slaanesh players?
>>
>>48712279
Yeah, from what I've heard that's a big part of the reason the price tag is so high for the number of miniatures - $70 for just six, even if they are a little larger than most board games.

Upgrade cultists ASAP, hardier cultists gonna cult longer. Do this first. Always. Not even joking, DO IT.
Lure neighboring Nobles into your loving pincers. Protect them.
Corrupt Heroes too if you can. Dial spins > dead cultists. Just be careful to point them at higher threat targets.
Free seductive magicks mean you can stall the game for strategic advantage.
Sneak corruption tokens with extreme prejudice. It can secure dial spins or get you 2nd place in ruination, which is nice.
Tzeentch cultists up in your britches? Seduce them.
Power points. You'll want more of those, and you have the cards to get +2 per turn.
>>
>>48713409

Thanks anon! A lot of that covers stuff which I don't recall anyone having tried. I think so far everyone who played Slaanesh took a general god upgrade over the cultist upgrade, so I will suggest that next time.

I think the problem might just be that Slaanesh is hard, but not underpowered. It seems to require a lot of good timing and misdirection to play as him, and we're probably just too new to do it right so far. But I will pass on your suggestions for sure.
>>
>>48713549
No worries. Cultists are super important because both dial spins and ruination depend on them.
Upgraded cultists have 2 def, so Khorne will likely prey on someone else, and you'll corrupt the territories faster and increase your probability of getting a second dial spin (or at least prevent Khorne from getting one) each turn. That beats every other upgrade imho.
Pick whichever upgrade you like after this one, once you get more spins with your improved degenerates.
>>
>>48713148

Kek! At least some of my really old MTG cards were valuable when I finally sold the lot off after leaving them sit unused and untouched for more than 15 years. I picked up a lot of the Android Netrunner stuff, but haven't bought any of the current cycle and don't have any real need to do so.

but why.jpg
The thing is run by complete fucking idiots who are screwing up enormously. It's over a year after the KS fired and they haven't submitted files to the printers yet. The put up their rulebook a couple of months ago -- the one that is supposed to be professionally edited and laid out -- and there were so many issues with it that they ended up having to hand it over to a playtester who actually gave a fuck and fixed it.

It's basically an unmitigated trainwreck. Personally I'm glad I dropped to a $1 pledge, because this way I get to see what I'm buying before I pay for it because I have no faith in the final product being not garbage.

Holy crapoli, that board design...

Just... why? Why not pitch this to a competent graphic designer?
>>
>>48718231
I'm glad I avoided this one too. If it actually arrives on the market in an even vaguely playable form I'll be shocked. Hell, apparently they couldn't even get an overseas manufacturer to make flat plastic washers. And I'm honestly not sure who was the 'clueless' party in that issue. It's not like they couldn't have purchased a flat metal washer at a hardware store, snapped a pic of it, and then emailed said pic to the other party.

Gentlemen, a boardgame came out about DOOM, and also there was another one made earlier. Are they worthy adaptations and are they fun to play? I'm on the fence about getting the recent one, I don't want to waste money on a dud that's just riding the buzz of good vibes that DOOM 2016 just gave everyone.
>>
>>48720029
Isn't getting a different experience the point of buying a new game?
>>
>>48720067

Ever heard of descent ? Have you tried Imperial Assault ? They're basically all variations on the same system.

Doom was actually the original one, it gave birth to Descent first edition, which gave birth to the second edition then Imperial Assault, and finally things go back full circle to DooM.

In case you havent tried any of those games, they're pretty fun dungeon crawly games. Most recent variations of the game have a bit of a "race" feel, where players have to go fast to do objectives.

I'd like to buy this new doom game (as the original doom is my favorite game of all time) but I already have the 2004 one, Descent, and Imperial Assault (so obviously, I do enjoy the system)

I've backed at least a dozen different KS projects for board gaming and every one of them has delivered. Out of that 1 (one) low budget game was 'Meh' - the rest have been excellent. I just felt bad for the High Frontier folks because things looked like the game had a lot of promise, and then almost immediately started going sideways after the pledge run finished.

What do you guys think about the second edition of Mansions of Madness? I love the first one, but always felt it had big problems as well (especially that the keeper is way overpowered). Sorry for any misstakes, typing from my phone.

>I'm thinking of getting Agricola because Catan is beginning to get stale.
>Good decision, [Y/N]?

No - do a little research and odds are good you'll find it has virtually NOTHING in come with Catan. It's not a surprise that Catan is getting stall. Here's a nice list another Anon wrote of alternatives...

If you like rolling dice which decides what actions you can take or which resources you obtain:
- The Castles of Burgundy
- Stone Age
- Troyes
- Macao
- King of Tokyo
- Bora Bora
- Seasons
- Takenoko
- Roll for the Galaxy

If you like a variable board that changes every game:
- Dominant Species
- Mage Knight
- Sid Meier's Civilization
- Antiquity
- Targi
- Archipelago

If you like building a connected network:
- Terra Mystica
- Power Grid
- Brass
- Keyflower
- Hansa Teutonica
- Ticket to Ride
- Roads and Boats
- Trains
- Thurn and Taxis
- Myrmes
- Vegas Showdown
- Hacienda
- The Great Zimbabwe
- Many, many train games.

If you like trading/negotation:
- Civilization
- Twilight Imperium
- Archipelago
- Diplomacy
- Bohnanza
- Santiago (bonus category: If you like being a dick...)
- Werewolf, Two Rooms and a Boom, The Resistance, or any other social deduction game

>...an exhaustive list of games better than Catan would stretch until it reaches the sun.

>>48721512

Christ that's old. And I would never recommend against Agricola.

I was gonna list off some games to add to that, but just do what I did in the first place and scan down the rankings list on boardgamegeek, particularly on the mechanics pages.

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamecategory/1026/negotiation
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamemechanic/2072/dice-rolling
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamecategory/1017/dice
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamemechanic/2011/modular-board
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamemechanic/2081/routenetwork-building
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamemechanic/2008/trading
(sort by rank)

Some notable additions that missed the list I spent 3 minutes making:

Game of Thrones (negotiation)
Cosmic Encounter (negotiation)
Sheriff of Nottingham (bluffing/negotiation)

The Voyages of Marco Polo (dice rolling / network building / worker placement)
Alien Frontiers (dice rolling / worker placement)
Kingsburg (dice rolling / worker placement / only good with the expansion)
King of Tokyo / New York (yahtzee dice rolling / lighter than Catan)
Pandemic: The Cure (dice rolling / co-op)
Roll Through the Ages
Discoveries (dice rolling / engine building)
Takenoko (dice rolling / modular board / panda feeding simulator)

Above and Below (trading / story-telling / engine-building / unique experience all around)
Millennium Blades (trading / Yu-Gi-Oh simulator)

Kingdom Builder (network building? / randomized setup and scoring)

Istanbul (randomized set-up, "race for points" Catan scoring / light die-rolling)

I should also point out that I was just spewing up any game that crossed my mind. Some of those games are difficult to both learn and play, so if you look them up on boardgamegeek pay attention to the "weight" rating at the top of the page. It's not perfect, but for reference Catan is sitting at 2.4/5.

Recently purchased Arcadia, Good Cop Bad Cop: Undercover expansion, Spyfall, Boss Monster 2 (Not one of my faves, but I have friends who absolutely love it), and Millennium Blades.

Arcadia was good, I like it more than splendor though it goes on perhaps just a hair too long.

Haven't had a chance to do GCBC or Boss Monster 2.

Spyfall went over real well with the group, probably will replace One Night.

Millennium Blades was a fucking blast. Everything about the game was fun.

Looking forward to having our first game of Scythe this weekend as well. Everyone's hyped and I'm looking forward to putting my art connoisseur's edition on the table. Also I made sure to tell people that there is less combat in the game than one might expect since I've heard that is a common complaint.

Eldritch Horror is about racing across the globe trying to prevent the arrival/awakening of an Elder God. Mansions of Madness is about exploring spooky mansions and crypts trying to uncover a mystery no doubt related to the arrival/awakening of an Elder God.

Both are good Co-ops despite what Steev thinks of the genre, and it depends on which you think you would enjoy more. MoM has neat mini's and map tiles and now has an app to make the game easier to run and manage. Eldritch is more mechanically tight and IMO has more replay value (once you've run through the scenario's once or twice MoM is pretty much done until you start buying expansions).

Both are slightly skewed towards you losing, both have a ton of expansions, and both are now owned by Asmodee if that matters to you.

I think it's partially because I've got dozens of games out of it, and there's certainly some element of repetition in that a not-insignificant percentage of games end in "whose-turn-is-it-when-everyone-runs-out-of-fuck-you-cards" - but that's the worst that can be said of it. I still think it's a great game, especially as an into to ameritrash design spaces, and it's not a bad negotiation game under the hood either.
A lot of my lost enthusiasm is probably due to having a lot of newer (or older (rip tannhauser)) titles with much fewer plays occupying all of my hype.

Incursion, Conflict, and Dominion. One has the rewards deck and components for an additional player, one has the hazards deck and components for an additional player, one has reward and hazards cards. Of the other two (Alliance and Storm), one only has more player colors, and the other only has space stations. The space stations suck, the extra player colors aren't needed (unless you really, really want little white flying saucers) because the game gets really stupid with more than six people (as in, the game will end with some people never getting a turn stupid), and the aliens included in either are bottom-of-the-barrel.

Cosmic Encounter Review (From Anon - not mine)

Cosmic Incursion is the best expansion to pick up if you're still relatively new to the game. It adds 20 new aliens with all but the "Locust." It also adds a new player colour, orange, so you can play with 6 folks

It also adds a new deck of cards that you may only draw when you defend. It has high and negative attack cards, an extra morph, kickers (Multiply your card), new artifacts, a special negotiate (crooked deal) and rifts.
http://cosmicencounter.wikia.com/wiki/Reward_deck

I don't own cosmic conflict but it is a strong expansion as well, it adds another colour to the game, black, bringing it up to a total of 7 players. It gives more option about what colours folks can play and it allows more aliens that need a spare colour to function. Again, this expansion adds 20 new aliens from I understand are pretty decent and fun.

The big addition in Cosmic conflict is the hazard deck. Each player has 3 destiny cards, one of them with a hazard symbol. When you draw the hazard symbol colour, you draw a hazard card, which changes the game rules and affects the current encounter. I think there are 3 "Super-Hazards" that stay in play until a new "Super-Hazards" comes into play. The hazard deck is either a hit or miss for folks I believe as I've heard positive and negative reviews about it.

Cosmic Storm and Alliance are both expansions I do not own but they are said to be the weakest ones. Alliance adds a white player colour, bringing it up to 8. No new colours have been added in Storm or Dominion.

Alliance adds a new set of rules for people to play in teams of 2 while Storm adds 10 space stations to put on planets. The space stations offer an extra power to whoever owns the planet.

The alliance rules has been met with lukewarm reception to my knowledge and the space stations have been met with mixed views as well.

Alliance offers 20 new aliens which aren't seen as amazing or essential. (CONT)
>>
>>48736965
Part II

Storm adds 25 aliens. Again they are not seen as essential or required. It does introduce a broken alien called "Brute" which can suck the fun out of a game. It's recommend by everyone to remove that alien from the game.

From what I can understand, Storm and Alliance should be the last expansions to pick up if you want to get every expansion.

The newest expansion, Dominion, (I actually own this one) adds 30 aliens to the fray and expands (or adds) the reward deck.

Most of the cards in this new reward deck are unique, it adds special kickers with their own special effects, negotiates that also have their own unique effects, retreat cards that allow you to stop your ships dying, intimidate cards that can be swapped in by an ally after the cards are set, (usually) a very high attack card and if opposed by anything else, it becomes a negotiate card. It also adds new artifacts unique artifacts and an extra morph, card zap and cosmic zap.

It also adds the "Flag ship" variant which is a token you put on one of your ships. The idea is this ship has a special power which the community has made up and rules you can find online. Since that is pretty adaptable, you should be able to find or make up some rules you find fun.

The 30 new aliens have been completely fan designed and homebrews. Most of them seem really fun to play and they certainly can shake up the game and at the very least, playable in comparison with the standard ones.

Dominion overall echos the underlying mechanic of chaos in Cosmic, with the new crazy cards in the reward deck to the 30 new aliens.

Dominion is probably one of the more complex expansions since it adds a lot of unique cards in the reward deck. Once you feel like you have a strong grasp of the base game itself and you really want to spice it up, then you should buy it.

Overall, Storm and Alliance are not really required. Incursion > Dominion > Conflict or Dominion > Incursion > Conflict then Storm/Alliance.

Anyone here play Flock?

What about Treasure Hunter?

I bought them the other day.

>Best solitaire game ever, GO.

1. Hornet Leader: Carrier Air Ops
2. The rest of the Leader series
3. Lord of the Rings LCG
>>
>>48734161
not going to claim it's the best ever, but my favorite that I own is easily space hulk death angel. the dice tend to fuck me over, but it doesn't even bother me since it fits thematically.

This game. Played it once or twice, cant remember. So much waiting, planning and calculating... just to roll a 1 while trying to land on a planet and start at zero.

Too much games, and work is killing me...
Last thing I played was Time stories, which my group borrowed from another group...

Currently waiting for Panzer from GMT to arrive.
Also waiting for Essen

8 / 10 for games that defy gravity.
As for recommendations, it's hard to give you useful pointers without knowing anything about your taste in board games...

>>48743206
Nice collection - I wish more of my local friends were into war games. Lonely Grognard is lonely...
>>
>>48738957
You forgot:
The Hunters: German U-boats at War
Raid on St. Nazaire
>>
A couple of my friends are currently in the UK and can bring me one game in English, which are rather difficult to come by, here in Germany. So I am looking for a recommendation based on my current favorites.

They are
>Blue Moon Legends
>BattleCon
>Sellswords
>Innovation
>Star Realms

If there is a common thread between them, I haven't found it yet, but I look forward to your take on my tastes.
>>
>>48727504
Yeah, it's called Pandemic.
>>
>>48744303
>The Hunters
Overrated IMO. It's fun the first couple of plays, but after that it just seems like you're rolling on the same 3 tables ad infinitum.
>>
I recently got into board games from video games, fell directly in love :/ Have a regular meetup with my friends however, they are slow as fuck, we can never play anything longer than 30-45m on the box, one of them is retarded with rules and forgets everything every 5 minutes, limiting us to lighter games. They also greatly dislike conflict, which I love.

We recently tried "Fresco" as a light(er) Euro, took us only 2½ hours...

Our mutual favorite is Roll for the Galaxy, which after about 20 plays we have gotten down to about two hours with three people. Life is suffering.

However, with all the new apps coming out Solo gaming seems more viable, what would people recommend between Imperial Assault and Mansions of Madness?
>>
>>48745606
Good cop bad cop

Zombie Dice

Citadels

Coup

The conflict in those games is light and should ease them in.

Carcassonne is another good one.

Anybody have any opinion on pic related? I saw it in my FLGS. It looked pretty interesting, but it was being sold for $70. Wondered if it was worth picking up.
>>
>>48745127
That is SO wrong. (True, but very wrong.)
>>
>>48745606
Between Imperial Assault and the new Mansions of Madness, I'd just pick whichever theme appeals to you more. They are very similar in most other respects, although Imperial Assault can double as a 1v1 miniature combat game if you find some non-retarded people to play with.

>RPG night last night
>Board Game Club event tonight
>Sunday is board game day with friends

This is my favourite week ever.

I struggled teaching Cthulhu Wars to a friend. After 45 minutes of plodding through the mechanics, he still -I quote- "kept throwing his whole hand of cards on the table, and didn't know how anything worked".
How can you fail to understand
>draw 5 cards from deck
>play cards, apply effects, discard all cards
>when deck is depleted, reshuffle discards
>>
>>48747830
>How can you fail to understand
Easy. He's a moron.
>>
>>48744670

I've played Blue Moon Legends and Star Realms, of those.

I would go with Blue Moon Legends simply because there is more meat on those bones, at a similar level of complexity and ease-of-access.
>>
>>48749063
Oh. Uh, those are my favorites from my current collection. I am looking for games that aren't one of these five. They're just listed to provide context.
>>
>>48749115

Gotcha. You might want to check out Codex or Millennium Blades
>>
>>48749556
Codex is only on pre-order and Millennium Blades is a good deal too expensive.
It has to be something my friends can actually find in a UK store and if it's more than 30 GBP it should be a "must absolutely have", which Millennium Blades didn't really strike me as.
>>
>>48747003
never heard of it, but that art looks nice and I absolutely love the history of the west, so I'll be looking in to it.
>>
If you want there to be a /bgg/ a couple hours from now, someone should make one.

I'm too tired. Going to sleep.
>>
>>48749703
Do you mean pre-Brexit or post-Brexit GBP?
>>
>>48747830
I'm assuming you mean Cthulhu Realms? Sometimes you just need to explain each little detail to some people for them to get it, and admittedly with deckbuilders - especially the Realms series - unless you're aiming for certain effects to combo with (using Miskatonic Library to discard your Goons) you can play through a whole game without 'getting' any of the cards.
>>
>>48749747
I'll do it.

Someone post the pastebin por favor.
>>
>>48751596
Does it really matter? It just shouldn't be too expensive.
>>
>>48752048
I was just poking fun bruh, made a couple thousand thanks to you (if you voted leave).
>>
>>48752061
Um, reading comprehension?
I didn't vote jack, because I'm a German citizen who hasn't set foot near the UK in about five years.
