So my party is about to track a nature demon through the woods, into a large area the demon has prepared. It's a rescue mission, else they'd do something more practical like burning the forest down or something.

I need ideas for mini encounters, traps, misdirects, hostile wildlife, predicaments for injured NPC survivors, and things of that sort. Help?

Bump

Trees with faces that scream or moan.

Roots that shoot up and impale things above them.

Exploding fruit.

A tree covered with hangman's nooses that wanders around trying to lynch people.

Spiderwebs blocking key routes through the forest.

Swarms of spiders that rain down from above.

A tree that has half-swallowed a child and keeps it alive to use the child's singing voice in order to lure people to rescue the poor kid and hunt for better, bigger prey
>>
Deer that scream in human voices.
Pits that are usually filled with rotting leaves. Usually.
A starving backpacker who got caught in the woods.
The remains of the starving backpackers friends.
Stones that laugh maliciously.
A brook that holds blood instead of water.
A partially completed hell mouth made of still living forest creatures.

OP here.

Thanks, I'm definitely going to use at least a few of these, either as encounters or just 2spooky scene setting.

Cannoli for your efforts, and keep 'em coming if you have more.

A tree bleeding sap that attracts clouds of flies. alternatively, the sap is blood

Sections of mist with THINGS inside it. Preferably mist monsters or something otherwise hard to see in the mist. They appear briefly and flit about in ways that make characters unsure if they're really seeing things long before actually attacking.

Suddenly what seems like every animal in the forest becomes bold enough to stop hiding and simply watch the party. Birds follow their every move and fly from tree to tree to keep the party in sight. Small mammals like foxes stand still do nothing but turn their heads to keep staring. They don't react to anything the party does except move, staying still even if attacked. If killed they seem to rot away all at once, insects descending on them in the thousands until they're completely covered. Only bones remain.

The insects themselves may swarm the party at times, blotting out all light as a huge mass of bugs surrounds them. Nothing can be heard but the buzzing of wings and vibrating calls. Nothing can be seen but the occasional bit of moonlight bleeding through to illuminate the constantly mobile mass of insects crawling all over each other.

Anything that falls on the ground is claimed by the forest. The ground swallows it, roots converge to cover it, fallen leaves swarm it, any way that the forest can grab something, it will. Later, lost objects may appear growing out of the trees or otherwise being used. Swords grow out of the ends of branches, armor becomes new bark. If the PCs don't drop anything, just have the latter part happening to previous intruders, or have the trees behind them snatch backpacks.

Similarly, anything that dies is claimed and used immediately. The insects described above swarm any monsters that die, or the roots and leaves cover them and the trees start manifesting their traits. A dragon attacks and is killed, but then the trees start growing scales instead of bark, insects start breathing fire. Bushes grow animal fur, and so on. If the trees attack and die, they too are reclaimed.

unless your rescuing the daemon then don't bother cause what ever the daemon took is dead and probably by now damned

Smiling woodsmen who do not hint animals, but joy.

An old cottage with the cupboards stuffed with mummified remains or jars with embalmed pieces. Nobody seems home but who knows when they will return. A trap door in the floor leads to a workshop.

Countless small bells tied to the tree branches and bushes. An old woman in a panic hobbles between them, knocking boughs with her cane to keep them ringing. No amount of consoling can calm her as she feels the ringing will ward off something terrible.

A lone, unarmored skeleton in an ornate open faced helm attacks in the night. It screams, cries, or laughs hysterically until defeated and leaves behind only the helmet which seems magical. (Anyone who wears it is cursed to waste away into bones within a few weeks, finding it easier to laugh, scream, or cry in the meanwhile.)

Giggling and childlike laughter which when followed lead to either an adults bones and nothing else.

>do not hunt*

Several close proximity instances of the bodies of amimals or people shod through by vine like roots, decomposing under the base of a sweet smelling flower atop a thick stalk. Any agitation of the flower, stalk, or body releases a spore cloud of deadly poison or paralysis. The roots are highly invasive and will penetrate any living thing subdued by the toxic cloud.

A field where a a thick, chitinous grass grows. It is sharp enough to cut skin but cannot pierce thick leather, boots, or any armor. Countless blades clack together in the wind and crunch underfoot when walked over. The combined sound is deafeningly loud making normal conversation impossible and could conceal the approach of something more sinister.

>Stones that laugh maliciously.
This is fucking retarded.

Throughout the entire thing, there is constant falling ash. It never seems to actually land, floating around aimlessly with no seeming respect for gravity.

A good strategy is to find an out of place image like eaten by spider, and then foreshadow it with each step. Shape each encounter and impression to resemble part of the destination but break it up so it becomes unrecognizable. You never actually have to arrive, it will simply structure the way.

Nets and sticky strings, eyes and legs, poison bite, dangling above and dropping down, paralysis and mummification, countless invisible watchers, tiny holes and cracks everywhere, pulsating eggs, ...
