>they're all 100% cancer decks right now
Fuck, I almost want them to be terrible again so I can play them without having my wallet or my feelings hurting
>>
>>48654475
Hah no.
Lil will be strong and valued as long as black is playable in standard, while Not-Garuke will only be worth while as long as delerium is strong. Delerium will be getting stronger with keledesh so he'll probably see play, but if he sees play so will Lil.
I'd get maybe one or two copies but don't stock up.
>>
>>48653564
how would something like the temur emerge deck we saw in the pro tour fare against a w/r human aggro deck, it only runs like 3 to 4 kozileks return as removal and 4 of those gnarlwood dryads as early blockers.
it seems to me that you would have to get extremly lucky on your draws to get kozileks fast enough to kill his board.

I'm not a conspiracy person dude, but I think that players played GB delirium because it's a good deck. It just isn't as good as bant company.

I´m trying to change my old u/r prowess for the current standard. Went through my cards and found only those first -

Fevered Visions
Mercurial Geists
Curious Homunculus

>>
>>48660930
Rats/Scavengers are okay in draft.
Hanweir Battlements is solid, and Garrison is good enough to play in decks with Battlements.
Gisela is good on her own, Bruna is meh. There might be an Eldritch Evo deck out there to make it happen.
>>
>>48653564
>Liliana is 50$

Wew
>>
>>48656097
It's actually $35. It'll be like $50 after it wins the pro tour.
>>
>>48661565
$45 actually. Foils of either liliana or newrakul will fetch over $70 though.
>>
Why is lili so expensive?
>>
>>48662552
Because everyXB deck in the pro tour is using her, and I mean EVERY deck.
>>
>>48662552
Because she's a good 3 drop Walker despite what /tg/ says
>>
>>48662552
Because in Standard "midrange the grindening" Format a 3 drop planeswalker that can generate value from grabbing back den protectors and den protectors grabbing whatever you want you can just value your opponent out of the game. Also her +1 is decent and she threatens to win the game eventually via ult.
>>
>>48662690
>3 drop Walker

Isn't that what makes her playable? That and she ticks all the boxes of what makes walkers good.
>She acts as removal
>doesn't die to bolt
>is less than 4cmc
>protects herself
>provides persistent pseudo-card advantage
>Removal for them is patchy and they can be hard to remove profitably when played on curve

This current lili is very good indeed. I sold mine for 40 bux the other day and now I'm beginning to wonder if that was the wrong idea lol.

While I like some walkers in terms of their design, I am not a huge fan of their existence.

>New Emrakul

Feel free to add your own.
>>
>>48664992
Scry lands were and are shit, but those other three cards I was saying was good to begin with
>>
I'm forcing a starfield of Nyx deck in standard. Enchantment destruction seems pretty weak outside of dromoka's command and I'll be running so many enchantments that I won't often be losing anything huge.

Wincons are probably a singleton of Sorin, Ob Nixilis and Avacyn.

For the more aggressive decks (Bant and/or Spirits) I've got dead weight and wasteland strangler + silkwrap but I'm not sure what to use against these sorts of decks in the top 8 (BW control, RG ramp, etc...). Stasis Snare hits Emrakul but I think I need more answers.

Is Gideon any good in the format right now?

No.

>>48665148
I now realise that our decks really weren't that alike
>>
>>48665111
No. I haven't played online since like, DTK.
>>
>>48665148
I'm going for a very creature light build, mostly removal in Stasis Snare, Imprisoned in the Moon, Dead Weight, Silkwrap etc... Supplant that with Anguished Unmaking and Declaration in Stone and then add board wipes (I'm currently testing out x2 Languish and a singleton Planar Outburst to get around Spell Quellers). I've got Oath of Jace/Liliana to offer sac options to Dromoka's Command and then Lunar Force, Scatter to the Winds and Dispel for some permission.

>>
>>48654475
She's 45 dollars. I highly doubt she'll reach Jace levels of insanity. If you're not using her, I'd sell now for store credit and pick up the axe man after his prices starts to go down.
>>
>>48665291

>>
>>48665335
Never said they were great. But they were pretty much ubiquitous in standard the entire time they were legal.

That seems that would qualify as 'good' to me.
>>
>>48665353
Yes, and not being able to consistently get tokens on turn 5 is a not so nice downside.

There are certainly enough differences between the cards to note pros/cons but P&K is definitely the stronger card.
>>
>>48665384
They weren't really relevant until khans beyond just getting scry value with mono b mono u and UW being on top and shocks still being legal, and they were used pretty slimly after near the end of there time
>>
>>48665405
Have you been watching coverage delium can easily be online turn 4 friendo
>>
>>48665420
I will admit I wasn't playing during khans fate reforged tho
>>
apart from the delirium build thats getting played at the PT, what are some good ways to make the G/R ramp shell work in the current meta?
>>
>>48665429
Can also means cannot. P&K is much more reliable when it comes to getting tokens. Yes, right now, if you dedicate your deck to turning on delirium, you can get your tokens on turn 5. P&K also isn't vulnerable to graveyard hate and has seen [albeit limited] play in Modern.

Again, the two cards are different enough that one is not strictly better or worse than the other, but P&K is both the stronger and better card.
>>
>>48665448
Quick glance says 45 in top 8 Khans PT and 0 in Fate PT.

Really hit both ends of the spectrum.

>>
Gentlemen.

How to we fix pic related?
>>
>>48665472
Anon, you can't compare these cards completely in a vacuum. Ishkanah shines in the delirium shells yes, but she's seeing play in decks that aren't delirium focused e.g. gw tokens. Graveyard hate is a non factor in this standard environment, there is not a single card that is being played in sideboards that messes with the opponents yard in a significant way. Ishkanah provides way more value and stats than p&k do. The negligible risk pays off to a greater reward. Also, modern play does not make a card more powerful than another in standard.
>>
>>48665714
Neither of today's grand finals decks have it.

Only one of the top four decks has it.

>I still think the spider is overall bad. Bur in a world of spirits, and Reflector Mages and going wide, she's... Appropriate.

You need to stop viewing cards through the eternal lens. If it's "appropriate" for the current standard it is by definition "good" for standard.
>>
>>48666331
This.

Vastly underrated by many people before her release, but she will not hold up in legacy.

I'd love to be proven wrong; a horde of 2/2 vanilla zombies blowing over Delver or miracles would be hilarious as fuck. But I just don't see it happening.

>>48666374
She'll go up cause of the hype now, but she'll settle to $20-30 range if she gets played in modern. Wizards have ramped up their card printing greatly since Khans. Almost no card post-Khans will be more expensive than $50, except for lands maybe.

She jumped to $50 before this weekend's top 8.

She may be able to hit $100 for next week but will come down quickly, especially if Lily decks don't top in the next few weekends. Expect her to settle at $50-60 though.

Btw Flip Jace was worth $90 once and thats post-khans.

I have yet to see a single post-Khans card that has rotated out of standard and has stayed above the $50.00 mark. Hell, none of them are above $30.00 right now on TCGplayer.

Short-term spikes (standard cards) mean nothing in the long, long history of Magic.

Where do I start? I have no idea. I'm doing this off a whim I don't even know what MTG is beyond this thread and that some assburgers power game tournaments with it. Red pill me on mtg

Take your brother into a large hobby shop near you, tell them you want to start out they should give you some 'intro pack' cards and rules.
buy a deckbuilders toolkit it'll have 300ish cards to get you guys started.

>there's no reason anyone can't build a fun deck out of a booster box

It isn't a practical use of your money anon. Unless your deck consists of bulk commons and uncommons, you will not find the singles you need to build a competitive standard deck out of 1 booster box.
It would have been a better investment to just buy the singles to build your deck.
>>
>>48669459
>Buy the singles
You mean spend five booster boxes worth of money on 75 cards?
>>
>>48655501
It would get completely shitstomped. Owen's deck is incredibly greedy, every game he didn't mill kozileks return he lost and sometimes he lost even with flash backing it 3 times.

Any deck that actually plays multiple early creatures would roll it over, it's just that all the aggro gets murdered by CoCo and languish so there was virtually none present

Seriously. It's so slow it allowed liliana to get to emblem multiple times, sometimes even with her not being played.

Gideon came down on 4, made a 2/2, then turned into a 5/5 for two turns and that was too much damage for his deck to deal with. Kalitas was bigger than emrakul.

Any deck that actually plays 1 and 2 drops, let alone w/r humans which will do shit like turn 1 kytheon turn 2 thalias lieutenant turn 3 orchid dragon hunter 4 always watching expedition guide

Falkenrath Gorger
Stromkirk Condemned
Lightning Axe

Asylum Visitor
Stromkirk Occultist

Avacyn's Judgement

>>
>>48666364
Too many combat tricks. Expidite/adrenaline rush/Titans strength is just overkill if you're trying to push through damage. Much better imo to pack 4x fiery temper, which is more flexible and can go dome when your opponent locks down the board. Undated fury is much better for pushing through damage on the ground, definitely a x4.

Right now your wincon seems weak, with early damage through combat tricks on a creature or two and finishing it off with some spells/thermo alchemists to ping away the rest when your opponent caches up on the board?

Incendiary flows are heavily underrated right now and good luck finding them. They seem to be on a whole other tier of uncommon rarity.

Also look at putting in x4 insolent neonates. Great 1 drop, and they'd work amazingly with x4 fiery tempers I mentioned. Best part is they are great chump blockers when your opponent gets a board presence and you can't sneak damage through -> they swing with a 5/5 Gideon -> block with neonate->sac before damage -> firery temper for R to deal 3 to face -> draw a card. They help buy you time in the mid game to top deck and help you dig. A really incredible 1 drop for aggro decks.

The problem with card prices is that in the near term standard determines them. So even if something isn't good in eternal formats it can still be expensive. A lot of mis-assessments lately are stemming from nobody being able to diagnose the power level of standard correctly. Flip Jace isn't good in old formats, and isn't even good in some standard formats. But he is more powerful than everything available in khans standard. Lili is very likewise. She's not better than gideon, but she isn't shit and there's nothing at that cmc to compete with her in those decks. She'll be cheap when she rotates out, just like jace.

>>
>>48664992
To be real, I thought Grim Flayer and the Delirium deck in general was not good. I put Grim Flayer seperate because the idea was that he wasn't necessarily just good in the Delirium deck. His ability reminded me a lot of Jace, the Living Guildpact's absolutely fucking awful + ability and people correctly recognized that as shit, and I didn't think it being on a 2 color bear made it that much better. I thought Ishakanah gave good value but it was more on the basis that I didn't think Delirium was very good.
>>
I can see Spirits being a really oppressive and miserable deck to play against, will probably appear with kaladesh. Spell Queller and Reflector Mage in standard at the same time? Ugh. And you won't be able to hit the Spell Queller what with Rattlechains and tricks using Essence Flux. Hell, stick Thought-Knot in there too. It'll combine control with a deck of potent flyers. Can't play removal, can't keep stuff on the table, can't keep cards in your hand, can't block stuff. I'm surprised we're not suffering already.
>>
>>48673227
because colors that involve interaction outside of draw go are fun to play against since you can actually see what they are doing and can logically think out the best pattern of play while playing against draw go is more of a guessing game and involves little on board interaction in favor of hand interaction and preemptive play, reacting to what they will do rather than what they have done

on the inverse playing blue and red is much more fun because you get to be the cunt that only plays reactively and forces your opponent to just guess what you are trying to do while you play draw go and or no interaction burn and solitaire out your win

I actually disagree with the first list though I find green black and white to be quite a bit more fun than red and blue since I like interaction on both sides of the board

>>
>>48674056
>It isn't interaction if only one person interacts (while the other can only watch)

The main problem is that the only decks that can interact with counters are decks with counters. And barring VERY few exceptions, all playable counters in Magics history have been blue.

Richard Garfield had the wrong idea. WotC should have released strong counterspells in every color. Just tie them to whatever is the color's theme ("GG - Counter target spell with mana cost equal to or less than the combined power of creatures you control") but make them all strong enough to fight each other.
>>
>>48674462
>The main problem is that the only decks that can interact with counters are decks with counters

I honestly don't understand this statement. The only time it's true in the slightest is if *all* you are trying to do is jam one single spell per turn, in which case you're really not playing Magic very well.

You interact with counters by baiting them, by utilising abilities, by making them sit uselessly in hand by not even playing a spell if you don't have to. They cannot always have a counter and a kill spell held up, it simply cannot happen.
>>
>>48674881
by interact, read as "directly interact"

a good control player will know when they're being baited, as well as have answers to the things that don't get countered

objectively, when played at optimal efficiency, draw go control is the best archetype in the game because of its ability to answer anything with the wide variety of answers that MTG has

Control won the protour yesterday.
>>
>>48676805
It wasn't Draw-Go which was the type of control being discussed

I don't mind tap-out control. The other player at least can resolve spells and play around the fact that the opponent does not have any mana up. Tap-out also tends to have at least a little bit of a board presence which is more interesting to play against
>>
>>48676805

Law of averages, one decklist in a myriad of other decks that work great, and bw angels isn't draw-go, non-interactive control, nor do they use counters. They answer some stuff until they crush you with a giant creature. Which you can interact with.
>>
Are there any quality, active forums for standard talk?

/tg/ and leddit have been failing me with slow non-competetive dribble.
>>
>>48675347
They are, but much of the go-to removal in the format is either exiling or -4/-4ing ever creature they see which kind of nullifies selfless spirit's protection. Also, the deck falls apart mid to late game if your opponent has enough answers and pressure to your counters and tempo plays. Top decking with spirits is atrocious and even more so when you have no board presence. In a vaccuum it's great and can easily take control of a game, but against the meta, things either go too fast and wide, grind you out through attrition or plow through you the creatures that quite frankly offer much more when they enter play. Without any decent draw power in standard, or even cantrips save for an ojutai's command here or there, playing tempo/control is not viable to be top tier.

>>48675823
I feel like reflector mage would be utterly outclassed in a spirits shell if wizards didn't try so damn hard to make it nigh impossible to plop spooky ghost tokens at instant speed. What I'm noticing:

You don't have a clear win condition. You have secure the wastes > ormendahl, nahiri ult > ulamog, Brisela, it's all over the place. It doesn't have a clear path to victory or any specific battle plan. If you're making a deck, it should have only one obvious win combo. Making too many obvious win combos gets your opponent on edge and makes them feel inclined to push a shitload of removal.

Flavor yes, but it just doesn't seem to "meld" correctly together given that its win conditions are many but so obvious to tell.

I timed out with this draft deck when I had the win on board. I hate modo. I had 1 minute on the clock and all I needed was to draw a spell, but I drew 3 lands in a row, which brought my clock down to 10 seconds. Then my opponents spammed spells on my turn and I couldnt attack anymore.

Was trying to get cards for standard from my shop and there boxes and stuff were so disorganized. Why do people have to be such savages, are their own collections this disorganized or are they just being dicks?

Am I just autistic?

The trick is to tell /tg/ a card is good and if they try and jump all over you and call you wrong and a faggot. You might be right.

If the card is legit bad, there'll be like one or two replies.

Is there a FAQ or something for newfags? I'm thinking about getting into MTG standard. I just want to know ballpark price of a meta deck, and if a rotation is happening soon.
>>
>>48683821

So? Let them keep the land, it's only going to tap for colorless anyway.
>>
>>48703342
Approximately $350 - $500 is a good ballpark figure for how much you will spend on a Standard deck, assuming no prior collection whatsoever.

Relatively soon, Dragons of Tarkir and Magic Origins will rotate out of Standard, this will mean no more Collected Company, which is the backbone of some major meta decks.
Standard rotates on September 30, 2016
>>
>>48703407
Gee that seems expensive... i dont know if i want to get into MTG after all...

Maybe i'll go with a cheaper game like Force of Will or Yugioh
>>
Why are people playing monoR when Atarkas Command is still here?
>>
>>48703426
You can always borrow someone else's deck for events and FNMs. If you win with someone else's cards its pure profit basically (but its courteous to give them a slice of the earnings).

Look up articles by Conley Woods, he will tell you everything you need to know about standard in any particular format, he's a great pro player with alot of informative stuff out there.

In particular check out his drafting videos for the current set and also check out his set reviews on tcg-player

wait for rotation in september

right now we are still in the hype phase after a new set and all the cards in it are inflated beyond belief

if you wait for september and preorder the good cards from the set/buy a box you will probably do alright and then be able to pick up the singles you need to play a deck or maybe 2 for around $200-$400
>>
>>48709585
speaking of September

what are the cards to pick up before rotation?

>Spell Queller
>Liliann
>Kalitas
>Bedlam Reveler
>Declaration in Stone
>Avacyn
>Relentless Dead
>Kozelik's Return
>Emrakul
>Eldrazi Displacer
>All the good emerge cards
>Prized Amalgam

anything else that people think is a good card to have before rotation?
I feel like I am probably missing a bunch of red cards that might be good post rotation
maybe Chandra?

Quick, new thread!
>>
>>48703426
Just play Limited instead of Constructed. It's way more fun and nets you cards in the process while also teaching you more about playing and deckbuilding.

Granted drafting is also expensive, but it's just 15$ for a night which you could grab a few beers with in a bar.
>>
>>48710758
I sort of second this.

Drafts are fairly well balanced and teach you many aspects of the game, but you can get into constructed once you have some value cards you can build upon.

Draft and prereleases are the best way to start playing, then buying singles to create constructed decks with a larger card pool is the best way to go. Standard is the least money-imposing format, and you can get a pretty decent deck for 130+ bucks if you aren't buying playsets of planeswalkers or kalitas and co.
>>
https://www.instagram.com/p/BIKNvj3DeJE/?hl=en

So I put together this build from hareruya to play at game day. I normally stick to limited and have never actually played standard outside of kitchen table so can you guys help me create a sideboard?

I put in one more hanweir battlements and took out one forest, but it is clearly weak to flying, so I thought about 3-4 tears of valakut in the side. Any more thoughts? Maybe some card draw somewhere in the main?

I was thinking about making a reanimator deck using this guy as a exile outlet and possibly a game winner (obviously more a fun deck).

What are some decent and possibly low priced cards to go along his ability? Devastators and Obliterators are a given, but any more creatures?

Colors don't matter since it'll be a reanimator deck.

hey guys, i recently pulled these 3 cards and was wondering if they're even worth playing, they seem like a lot of fun but im unsure how to use them properly as im still new to the game.

(for instance and i kill Reletnless dead 5 times in a turn to have westvale transform)

- Archangel Avacyn
- Relentless Dead
- Westvale Abbey

also, how does Indestructible work, is that just for like spells and stuff or can they only be killed by exile spells
>>
>>48712650
so a couple things:
avacyn is an absolute bomb in a lot of decks—extremely playable but also extremely sellable.
you, however, cannot kill relentless dead 5 times to flip westvale abbey. you need to sac 5 things at once.
there are some really great zombie decks that relentless dead can fit into, but avacyn as a curvetopper works in almost any deck
>>
>>48712650
Exile effects, minus effects like languish and for example sacrafice effects like Fleshbag Marauder get rid of Indestructible.

No, you can't use Relentless Dead to solo activate abbey, since the moment you activate the sac effect you need to have those 5 creatures on board for it.
>>
>>48712650
Westvale abbey triggers only with five INDIVIDUAL creatures. You need to sacrifice five creatures all at once in order to trigger the ability.
>>
>>48712650
oh and indestructible means it can't be killed by damage or by a "destroy" effect—it can be exiled and its toughness can drop to 0 killing it, though
>>
>>48712731
>>48712723
>>48712719
>>48712714

thanks guys!
im kind of wanting to see if i can either build a deck around the abbey using spirit tokens or that devil bomb card in red... play with devils i think its called.
my Avacyn is foil and i triple sleeved it when i pulled it out so i might sell it if i can.
>>
>>48712802
For Abbey a perfect deck imo would be Golgari sack with Eldrazi Scions, using stuff like Blisterpods and shit like that.

With proper setup you'd be probably able to flip it turn 3-4.
>>
>>48712873
is that from the set that's going out of rotation next?

>>
>>48713062
colourless? but you need a forest to cast it

also is the Mana addition permanent? or just for the turn that you sac the creature on
>>
>>48713097
Turn on which you sac the creature and I'm guessing the made some color requiring eldrazis devoid so you can't make ridiculously OP deck based on them.
>>
how should i modify UW spirits to handle the changed meta at game day?
people are going to be playing both emrakul and emrakul hate (alchemist burn)
>>
>>48713152
Devoid isn't a downside as far as I'm aware, unless you have something that says "green creatures you control get x", whereas most green synergy I've seen comes from devotion and the thing still gives you 1 devotion.

In fact it makes it so you can't kill it with Ultimate Price, protection from green is useless vs it, and it can synergize with colorless-matters cards like crossroads or ruins of oran-reef

It's a pretty neat submechanic and I enjoy it for constructed potential, unlike that pesky Ingest mechanic which is for draft purposes I'm assuming.
