The standard starting point for lore is the various Imperial Guard novels.

If you're into wiki-walking, Lexicanum is a good place to start. That's how I learned most of my lore when I got into 40k:

The various codices are also good places to start:

Holy shit, some replies.
That will help tremendously.
I don't know why I didn't think of that before, that's how I learned Star Wars lore.

1d4chan's also got some good shit, although it doesn't take itself as seriously as Lexicanum:

And then there is also the Emp's Text-to-Speech device series.

Seconding that. It's mostly parody, but it does REALLY well at touching on all the major sticking points of the universe. Be warned though, it is told from the perspective of the MOTHERFUCKING GOD-EMPEROR OF MANKIND... it may be biased against filthy xenos and heretic scum.

start with acquiring a well-paying job first.
beyond that 40k wiki has more content than lexicanum last time I checked:
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Warhammer_40k_Wiki
other than that... the 40k core rulebook. it's designed to introduce people to the setting. just get a pirated pdf, a link should be in the general thread.

As for the whole Lexicanum vs. 40k Wiki vs. 1d4chan argument:

I used to work for a very successful FLGS that I still visit to this day, so let me tell you how to get into anything tabletop
First, do a little reading on it. Not how to play the game, but just it's background.
Then look into how the game is played. Now what's the best, just how it fucking works. Wiki's and other stuff works well.
If you like what you see, then try and find a FLGS that's nearby you. Call them, ask if they have players that play X game you wanna know more about, and when they play.
Then go visit that day. Arrive early, around 1 hour to 30 minutes before the guy said they normally play. Gives you time to look around.
IMPORTANT: You are not there to buy anything on this visit. Do not buy anything, do not get tricked or tempted into doing so. I hammered this into the guys that worked out front desk so hard they were reeling. FLGS's want repeat players, not a quick buck.
Watch a game being played. Ask questions if you feel like it, talk to anyone who's friendly enough. Do not reply with what army/deck/faction/ whatever you are looking at. You will be told things that do not help. Building your own force/deck is more important, do not copy someone else's list/build/whatever. If anything, you might want to ask if X is viable. You aren't looking to win every game, but it just needs to work.
Still like what you see? Then you need to go back home and do your research. For card games that's not a problem, you just buy what's currently legal. Ask your FLGS for more info.
For other tabletop games, you need the rules and armybook. Borrow one if you can, because you may change your mind. You can do this at the FLGS most of the time, of course on the internet you can find anything (refer to X games general thread on /tg/
From there you simply figure out what you want to use while leaving 25% of your composition undecided. This is for extra stuff you will need to play.
Enjoy

The way I memorized the entirety of 40k lore was my grandmother had to stay at my house for a week when I was younger. My best friend was the Warhammer 40k wiki. Not lexicanum, they tend to be a bit vague when it comes to lore. Start at the Great Crusades and work your way up. It's easiest that way.
