Well /tg/ how does one play a holy servant of the gods without being a one dimensional character who does nothing but pray and heal slut? I want to play a Cleric of a Azuth (God of Wizards) in an upcoming game but I'm having trouble coming up with anything other than "Cleric who likes Wizardry". Also post Clerics and awesome holy symbols.
>>
Azuth is also a big proponent of 'safe wizardry' ergo 'responsible magic'. In addition to spreading the faith, you could be the Magical Fun Police, trying to ensure magic is both pervasive and wholesome.

So you're the PC bro of the magic community. Censoring knowledge to make sure you're on the right side of history.

Playing a "Sorcery's bad mkay? You should learn safe Wizardry mkay? Get yourself a nice Spellbook mkay?" Character could be really fun actually.

I played a cleric of Azuth once wielding a club fluffed as a scepter/magic rod I beat people to death with. He was all about spreading magical knowledge, safely and responsibily, teaching others, and incentivized good behavior in wizards. He acted as a mentor of sorts. He was of course very suspicious of Sorcerers, because while they were favoured by Mystra they usually lacked formal training or instruction, and acted without forethought or knowledge of the consequences of their actions - much like how a nuclear scientist might view some asshole playing with uranium reactors in their garage.

You could always become a teacher and base your campaign around that.
Or integrate knowledge and understanding into everything you do, make rational decisions instead of being a typical murderhobo.

I also used Scribe scroll to teach can trips and shit to young would be mages

Cantrips really are the best fucking spells. Prestidigitation, mending, and mage hand

Being a cleric is WHAT you are, not WHO you are. Despite being a servant of a god, you're still your own person, not just an extension of their will. Figure out quirks: what hobbies do you have, what kind of women does your character like, etc. Figure out personality: "devout" is just ONE trait, and even that comes from different flavours ranging from smite the infidel to spread the word of god.

A common aspect of these gods is the theological and Thaumological notion that divine magic and arcane magic are one in the same, the only difference is that divine magic is granted through the favor of thought-entities fueled by human belief(gods) while the other comes from manipulating the fabric of magic through various means, usually through Observation, Perception, and comprehension if we're talking Wizardry specifically. All magic is one and the same, and you as an arcane priest understand that better than anyone.

Basically, you're something of a pragmatic Cleric. Just because the gods are magical constructs fueled by human emotions and beliefs does not make them any less real, or any less viable a source of power to utilize. It definitely makes for something interesting to study over. Of course, go to far and you're straying into Ur-Priest territory, which might not be a bad thing. Good luck!

In order to be a cleric, you must be at least a fairly devout person and your personal views on certain matters must be reasonably close to the views of your faith.

After that, you are on your own. Your character's views on matters not relating to Azuth's dogma are pretty much whatever you decide. You may want to found a magical college, create a magitech utopia through extensive crafting and use of spells made permanent, hunt down those who use magic irresponsibly, seek to be a highly paid psychologist dealing with powerful mages, an archeologist specializing in the ruins of ancient Netheril or another magical civilization, or just some travelling holy man, woman or kobold teaching the awesomeness of magic by example wherever visions guide you to go.

Most clerical characters, both in fantasy and outside of it, are generally one of the following stereotypes:
>Cutesie healslut
>Saint
>Corrupt bastard who either uses his religion as an excuse for atrocities and/or doesn't actually believe in it

Why not play something more realistic: a cleric who tries to live according to his religion and the strict tenants of his religious order, but struggles? A cleric who tries to be peaceful and forgiving, but is quickly angered and tends to hold grudges. A cleric who is celibate and pure, but feels tempted by the female form. A cleric who preaches and debates, but deep in the night doubts whether what he's preaching is correct or even true. Pious without being zealous, pure without being asexual, devoted without being narrow-minded. It actually creates internal contradictions and conflicts, which open up opportunities for roleplay.

See this is the kind of thing I wanted to go for. No matter how holy and good he is he is still a man trying to live up to the standards of a god.

The thing with Clerics, and with all characters really, if that they're characters first, and their class second. Just like every irl priest isn't the same bible-thumping faggot, so every cleric doesn't need to the same.

Sure, they're followers of a god with a specific agenda, which tells you something about them, but that still leaves a lot of room for improvisation. You know what cause they support, but why did they choose to support it, and how do they prefer to do it? What are they like when they're not actively serving their god? What are their hobbies? What is something they really hate which has nothing to do with their religion? When they talk about their god, are they zealous preachers, stern lectors, kind mentors, or something else? And so fucking forth.

One facet of your character is, more or less, set in stone by choosing to serve a specific deity. That doesn't mean you can't use your imagination for everything else.

Just someone is celibate doesn't mean they can't be tapping a new pussy every night, it just means they cannot marry.

Chastity is the no fucking vow.
