Hear ye, hear ye. I hereby call to order this meeting of the most illustrious Mages Guild! There apparently was a small incident in the cafeteria last night, another argument about who has the best staff that got out of hand. It had all started innocently enough about the advantages of certain types of wood in staffs, but eventually resulted in the loss of a dozen redrobes as you all tried to demonstrate the merit of your own staff by throwing spells all over the place. While this might have been entertaining at first this has got to stop, and as such I'm having you all settle this matter right here in the grand hall where there is less chance of collateral damage, and where all can witness the result of your arguments once you've come to an agreement.

Welcome to the Mages' Guild. Pick a name and join in! Conflicts are resolved with d20s when needed, or with playing it out. When the thread dies on /tg/, we keep it going on archived.moe. For additional resources, please visit http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Mage%27s_guild

PFFFT, you people actually still use wooden staves to channel your magic!

Metal is terrible for handling necromancy, you want a staff that has a connection to the magic you're casting.
>>48592244
Silver? I suppose it's good for some branches of magic but it's a terrible fit for mine. I'll give it points for the design not going overboard like I've seen with some staffs the current generation is using, just look at this thing! Too much decoration, too little staff!
>>48592297
Break too easy? Only if you make them wrong. And if anyone is close enough to break your staff then you have other things you should be worrying about.
>>48592309
I don't doubt it, what's the main bulk of it? Complaints? Applications for new mages? Taxes?

>>

I've got to agree with you there. Nothing beats a good old fashioned sword.

This is Focii-ist. What about those of who don't use staffs? Wand users and Battlemages who channel through swords? Not everyone has as magnificent of a focus as we do. Just like none of you have as magnificent of a focus as /i/ do
>>
>>48592428
I've been using staffs for millennia, it's not so much that I haven't found the right magical alloy as it is that I've found the perfect kinds of wood. Living wood, especially old wood, make amazing Necromancer Staffs. Spines work very well too, but they look terrible so I haven't used those since the Third Age.
>>48592431
You would be surprised how little of that ends up in my pockets. I've been working almost for free since that time I killed the Archwizard. It's a good thing he has a sense of humour.
>>48592434
It hasn't been a priority so I haven't gotten around to it.
>>48592435

Ah! My brother's replacement.
>The Dragonborn shakes with both hands, bowing slightly and offering a quant smile

I am Professor Glaive Oakenheart, I tend the Dragonology Department. Your students often come to my lectures on draconic hoards and the presentations on dragon combatives. Certainly better than my brother's charges; they only came to see how to slay or seduce Dragons.

I'm sorry I couldn't greet you earlier, I was away on Pilgrimage.
>>
Uh... I have no strong opinions on staves one way or the other?
>>
>>48592508
>He'd mumble under his breath.
Say hello to the narcissist everybody...

>>48592520
>The man would shake his head at this.
I don't understand why everyone has to backstab each other around here. It's completely unnecessary.
>>
>>48592520
Understandable. But please do inform me when you make progress. My lack of knowledge on ancient grooming practices and Aenic Metallic musical theory is proving to be quite vexing.
>>
>>48592447
Nice to meet you Iris. Do you want to go back to your new home or would you like to wait here for your dad to come back?
>>48592508
Incindia, what's the purpose in not having one of every kind of foci?
>>48592520
Uhuh... My staff is still better than yours.
>>
>>48592508
That's their choice to chose a lesser foci, staffs are superior to all variants of the spell focused wizard.
>>48592536
Is it your first staff?
>>48592544
Did you inhale the fumes of one too many potions? They tend to mess with your mind for a bit.
>>48592568
Don't you at least have a staff? Or have I just assumed?
>>48592578
I'll have you know I put the dagger through his chest, and had every intention to bring him back. No permanent harm was done, and I accepted my punishment for the incident it caused.
>>48592584
Very well.
>>48592595
Really? What does your staff do for you then?
>>
>>48592595
Because you can only use one efficiently at a time. Remember that apprentice who tried to patent 'gangsta' style wand use and died horribly due to magical feedback?
>>48592578
>>48592595
MY STAFF IS SUPERIOR!
>>48592616
Doesn't change that they should get a chance to /try/ to prove its better than my staff.
>>
>>48592551
Ah, not to worry my friend.
>He'd return the mans smile with one of his own.
I'm usually away on various adventuring outings with my own students. After all, the arch-wizard doesn't really give us much of a budget, so we've got to make our own! Also, I'm sorry to hear about your brother professor. His theories on werewolf combative procedures are well known throughout the world.

>the twitching "mage" would present a jar, filled with crystals in varying colorations

G-g-g-gentlemen!

My latest batch... I haven't had time to name my new invention, but the results are INCREDIBLE the substance is in a crystalline form, and can be dissolved into water, or ingested directly trough the mouth.

YOU SEE!! The effects of this...substance, is that it greatly increases the agressiveness and energy of a..uh...ANYONE! Who were to ingest it.

The dosage is still a problem, because some have died due to presumed overdose

But the preliminary results WOULD IMPLICATE!! that it is a success

>>48592616
You're not supposed to inhale the fumes?
>>
>>48592616
I don' use a staff really. Ne'er saw the point. But e'eryone seemed so focused on them so I went and bought one.

>>48592630
Hmm... a bit short and thin perhaps, but otherwise a very traditional geomancy staff. I approve.
>>48592651
Generally? No, it's not advised to inhale thee fumes of the potions while they are still cooking. Am I right to assume you do it every time you make a potion?
>>48592656
I see... more of a lab person then?
>>48592679
A very fair point.
>>
>>48592651
Gods above... We already have a drugged out Arch-Wizard running around, spending half the guilds wealth on cocaine. Do we REALLY need another drugged up hippie wizard around here?
>>
>>48592723
For the first... I wanna say year, year and a half, I didn't even know what a focus was.
>>
>>48592629
Oh don't feel sorry for Dramorn. Pity is the last thing he needs, yet pity and alcohol is the only thing he seems to barter in now.

He'll turn around at some point, then drag me along to fight some unfathomable evil before drowning himself in whores and whiskey again. He's nothing if not predictable. I'm not surprised that the Battle Magic Subdivision is tight on coin, Dramorn always did have trouble acquiring funds from Applied Magic. I would be willing to provide income for your services, however, since Aen seems to be riddled with Draconic relics just beyond my own means.
>>
>>48592616
Why it does many things.
It channels my magic efficiently, it has it's own internal necrotic energy and is able to shoot out necrotic beams, which honestly thinking the metal would probably be extremely suited to channeling necromancy.
Oh, and it's able to be wielded effectively like a mace and is able to strike steel without damage.
>>48592626
Now that's silly. First off, you're implying that having multiple foci means you have to use them all at once, and secondly, the idea that someone actually tried that is pathetic.
Also, your staff sucks compared to mine.
>>48592630
Look, I'm just stating facts. There is at least some kind of mystical metal better suited to channeling everyone's magic.
>>48592637

I would be willing to pay handsomely, especially considering the risks involved.

Do you have a single fact to back that up?
>>

You pass.
I' would teach you, provided you're here for that.

>>
>>48592973
Also, you're lighting the floor in fire at this point...
>He'd conjure up a good sixty gallon ball of water over her head.

You know the rules Missy!
>>
>>48592906
Indeed!
>His professional demeanour is barely restraining the excitement of a giddy child
You are one of Aen's ancient Metallics?!

>>48592924
Pardon?

>>48592928
I made pilgrimage to Azahad, where a great shrine to Io lay within the ribs of the ancient dragon Ja'Hazad, guarded by the Tweleve Azure Blades of the Blue Dragonlord. It was quite an impressive site. Afterwords I traveled to the Guild of Cloth to treat with the cultists of Tiamat and the Brotherhood of the Silvered Wing, a monastic order to Bahamut, that resided there. I returned just in time for this meeting.

>>48592962
Indeed? I would very much so like to see this effigy after the proceedings.
>>
>>48592905
Well I do. And as such, robe, hat and staff are all essential to own as a wizard. Have you always had your sword or have you ever had other focii Adam?
>>48592924
Which is why I shall not name it. And really, a Biomancer brought the old scales back to life? Do you know how?
>>48592928
Well, I don't like it. Metal shouldn't be alive, it's not how things should be.
>>48592943
Don't worry, I won't forget again.
>>48592947
Well if you find something that can close wounds without too many side effects, let me know. I'm glad to hear you've been able to find test subjects that don't complain, that's not something to scoff at.
>>48592973
Meteorite Metal? I suppose that does make for a good base for explosive spells considering the impact it makes as it hits the ground.
>>48592991
Did you make the material as well, or did you go out an gather it?
>>
>>48593038
I got her a few years back. Before that it was all mental focus to cast. Figure out planar alignments for a bank of spells to cast every morning, cast until my mana reserves are tapped.
>>
>>48592973
This one is very brave, yes! Shi has licked many things on a bet!
>>
>>48593037
Id be more than happy to show you it professor. I'll conjure it from my personal demi-plane after the meeting is over. Along with a few other things I've been keeping since I started adventurering.
>>
>>48593038
Meteorite metal is a great pyromancy focus, It burns up in the atmosphere and then explodes when it impacts. difficult to obtain in meaningful amounts though.
>>
>>48592946
Eh, we're getting extra loud and shouty today because of staves.
>>48592973
Well fine, but just to let you know I learned hydromancy.
>>48592991
I know a guy that went on to prove the effectiveness of mystical metals as the material for staves for foci use.
>>48593037
Yo, I did not ask what you have been up to, I asked what you were doing here.
>>48593038
You just don't want to admit my staff is better.
>>
>>48592924
"Interesting choice. Few I have seen use weapons. That few is millions, but still."

>>48592928
"You want to duel, little man?"

>>48592943
"Ook."

>>48592988
"Hmph. Everyone assumes a dragon is only out to kill them for some reason."

>He says this as he crunches down on the metal creature and proceeds to swallow it.

>>48593037

>>
>>48593038
The birchwood was from my father's stores, he chopped down the tree but I carved the staff. The amethyst however is all me.
>>
>>48593091
Funny. You know water is fairly poor at dealing with exceptionally hot things right? You can drop a molten ball in water and the water all boils before it can even get close enough to cool the ball.
>>
>>48593085
Splendid.

>>48593091
Pardon? Have I missed something?
>>
>>48593038
I wasn't there.

But it's how he fixed her dragon's breath weapon.

>>48593037
My niece has a zombie silver dragon, and in order to fix the breath weapon it wields, a biomancer cloned a living silver dragon, then killed it. According to her.

>>48593106
Eh, it was all I had on hand.

I haven't named it yet..but the crystalline form and the bright coloration...

I still have no idea what to call it

I think I'll name it simply, "Aggrospeed" because it is a product mainly aimed at the orc populace, and they...well they go batshit crazy when they take it

and as for the speed part, it makes you feel rather fast, increases endurance and all around prolongs the capability of permorming a physical task

>>48593038
Hard to come by yes, but as the warlord described it, he uses my products as combat stimulus, the effects create warriors with a mentality resembling the berzerkers found in hostile environments

Although I fear for the king's judgement on this, but the nomadic ways of the orcs aid me in this, I stick with them, and we relocate whenever the odds are not in our favor...

>>48593106
I just have BAD EXPERIENCES with dragons, SORRY!!

>the twitching wizard was staring at the chrome dragon

So shiny...

May I interest you in my products? Intended effects increase performances, depending on the product naturally... side effects may cause temporary insanity. Or permanent...

What is about staves that is so important? Does not everyone have access to wood here?

>>
>>48593170
Assumin the reason some of them die is because you concentrate it too much, speeds up too far, heart attack and such.

I'de just call it Aggro.
>>

Mister Veilhex, I implore you! I must see this creature, it's imperative to my work here on this plane!
>>
>>48593066
That must have been exhausting.
>>48593087
How did you get enough for your staff?
>>48593091
I won't admit your staff is better because it isn't true. And I don't approve of you trying to show off this monstrosity like it's something to be proud of. A true staff is made from a material carefully chosen, and personally shaped, all while infusing it with your magic. And even if, yes, even if I were to somehow be convinced that your staff is better than mine, this is my secondary staff. My finest staff is dead, and awaits me in the Realm of the Dead whenever I shall return there.
>>48593107
I told you last time, it was my apprentice's fault the book didn't make it. And I got it replaced. What will it take for you to let it go? Must I donate a first edition copy?

Wraithwood? Where have I heard that name before?
>>

>He pulls out a dust covered staff, its made of at least thirty types of wood all carved together into one quarterstaff, Its laced with impressive amounts of runes but lacks any other form of decoration
>>
>>48593257
Long story, Short version is probably something along the lines of 'I was born with it' but not really.
>>

>>48593256

Oh, didn't notice it was you speaking.

The warlord does not care really, and the dosage is rather on point for the orcs at the moment, until I come up with a more potent alternative...

But the other races have trouble with the dosages still, I advise small dosages but the FUCKING MORONS STILL INGEST WAY TOO LARGE DOSES, WHICH RESULT IN...UNFORTUNATE LOSS OF RETURNING CUSTOMERS...

Pardon me... I have developed a concerning tendency of RAISING my voice at times, it is beyond my control...

>>48593257
I understand, I also use the occasional human tag-alongs as local dealers for my product, it seems some areas are...less than happy about my product being distributed there...

End result is that my product gets a steady spread, I receive a steady income, and the benefits for the warlord I'm associated with are, rather impressive
>>
>>48593364
Marus? Well, I suppose if anyone could do it then it would be him.
>>48593380
You wanted it to be shaped like that? How on Aen did you come up with that design? And, why would you make an Oozemancy staff out of living metal? I really do not see the connection.

Even better in my opinion, it let you shape the staff the way you wanted it to be.

Well nothing much has changed around here.

All right everyone im here to push a new notion. I personally believe that now would be a good time to declassify the forbidden archives. Hear me out.

Firstly I've been guarding this thing for over 1300 years. Most of the objects have become irrelevant and their respective deities either no longer worshipped or killed off.

Most of the tomes down here are outdated, and the ones that are still useful have been stolen. The Eldrich department is responsible for most of these thefts, as their younger students seem to think they can better grades by using "The old stuff" which I might add is forbidden for a reason.

I can happily report that all of the "Living Specimens" are alive and health. and some would benefit other departments greatly. we have one or two illegal dragons down here.

The great super-weapons of the last great war have been disarmed to some degree, I make no promises with the long range contaminators. Those things are staying down here.

And lastly my team and I would like to get into teaching, this is basically an excuse to get some visitors down here to learn about all things wrong and questionable.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts. I understand If we want to keep all these items contained.

Theres about 300 sets, unfortunatly for you most of them are cursed.

The old bench of the great tinkerer is down there actually. so much of it is automated you used to be able to give it paper slips and it would do the work for you.
Took an unfathomable amount of power sadly, we had to take it out of comission.

Shame really, I was using it to make enchanted cages.

Guys... Check...check this out, I've got two hands...and two hands...and...I mean like, I have a gat-staff... how fricken cool is that? I mean, I could think of...mass producing these things, charge 'em up with magic, and arm the orcs with them?

Think about it yo, a military force, comprised of very angry and strong, ednuring orcs. With gat-staffs as weapons, and when they run out of magic charge, they switch back to their standard weapons, swords axes...whatever they use, and fuck shit up...

I should expand my business ventures... so that I can expand my research...

Anyone interested in fruitful co-operation?

Trust me, dealing potions alone to the orc tribes is profitable in itself, now think about how much gold we could rake in if we sold other services to them? Enchantments, and the likes, magical weapons, all that stuff.

I mean, the guild rules don't forbid lucrative business, it just guides us to steer away from causing larger conflicts, but technically we wouldn't cause the conflicts, we'd just be arming a aggressive faction of said conflicts with potions that make them a little bit better at figthing.

>>48594895
Tsk tsk tsk, you lack imagination when it comes to business, you know how orcs like to raid villages and the likes, it's usually brutal and..bad for business because on average I lose a tenth of my customerbase per raid.

Now disguise the orc scouts as magical girls...

And everyone wins, you get a profit, I get a profit, and the orcs don't die en masse

>>48594939
>>48594801
>The twitching mage conjures a board on which to scribble his business ideas on

You see, we pretty much dominate the magical industry, and I can handle the actual sales for a small percentage of your profits so you won't have to risk...not being liked by the orcs..

Now I know a kind of...uh.."open minded" sect of dwarves, they make quality weapons and armor, now if we deal quality weapons and armor, as well as magic items, potions and the likes, to the orcs, we will be the dominating merchants to them, as to repeat I can handle the actual sales in your stead in order to avoid getting caught up in any unpleasant circumstances.

Now, theoretically we can now offer, alongside my existing range of products, essentially disguises for orc scouting parties, and uh... extended manpower in the form of resurrected orcs, and other un-dead, naturally Lazarus you'd have to figure out how to give the or warlord the power over the un-dead troops we're selling him but you'll figure it out.

Now, as I said, I can handle the on-site sales which will leave you to manufacturing the products which the orcs desire. Of course I will demand a slight percentage, say 2..maybe 3 percent of your total income per batch of sold products as a vendors fee

Sleep well, I should probably go to sleep as well soon.
>>48595680
I thought Archmagus Rotherton's poker game was tomorrow? Has there been a change of plans?
>>
>>48595714
Alright then.
>>48595625
>A maw portal starts opening up
Lurco's coming now, so I'll be going. Seeya.
>>48595617
Lets go get turnt! WOOOO! MY STAFF IS THE BEST!
>>
>>48595757
O-Oh, okay...
>>
>>48595757
"Whatever. So how are we gonna get there?"
>>
Well, it is time for me to go off, hopefully I only piss on a few a gods, and maybe piss off a dragon.
>A strange chant resounds, the limbs seem to coil and dissapate while reforming.
>A strange blood red glow seems to fill the room.
>A strange circle rumbles and growls from above and a seemingly jet black hand scoops the figuire.
Ah, fuck me, well, I guesse no rest for the wicked huh. Hopefully I see you guys while you're still not aged to dust.
>>
>>48595884
Well you're a fucking dragon, right?
I get on your head or some shit and we fly there.
>>
>>48595931
"Well, WHERE is it then?"
>>
>>48595877
>Lurco pops out of the maw portal
Hey Iris, sorry, didn't mean to leave you all alone.
>>
>>48595906
I'll still be here.
And hopefully, the archives will be too.
>>
>>48595939
The country left of Solemarais.
>Glug jumps onto your head
Onwards!
>>
>>48595944
Where was it! This one was trapped with, with - witches!
>>
>>48595723
Archmagus Rotherton's penmanship has too long plagued the golem under his purview; a miscalculated letter makes a servant into a serval and you get disasters like the invisible maid that left invisible shit everywhere and ate Fra Oliganna's familiar.

>>48595729
It would not surprise me if, after brief investigation, it turned out that the poker game was rescheduled so as to prevent a certain Channeler Hugh from communion with the Spirit of Fortune - the stars will be right tomorrow, not tonight.

Just Hu's luck I suppose.

Of course, neither of you heard this from me. Hypotheticals of course. I have neither volition nor will of my own.
>>
>>48596049
Sorry. I promise I won't do it again. So, uh, nothing bad happened, right?
And is there anything you want from me to make up for it?
>>
>>48596099
A recompense for lost honour from negligence no?
>>
>>48596203
Yeah, more or less. A hug? Ice cream? Whatever you want really.
>>
>>48596020
"Just try not to kick me while we fly."

>Flaps wings and exits guild

"Control, we have takeoff!"
>>
>>48596256
Uh...This one would like, a uhm...Ice Cream?
>>
>>48596474
Alright, we'll go get you some ice cream.
I heard some cryomancers sell really good ice cream, wanna try that?
>>
>>48596502
S-Sure, is it, dangerous?
>>
>>48596542
I don't think it is but if something dangerous happens I'll protect you and keep you safe, alright?
>>
>>48596571
>Shi puts a paw, over hir muzzle then, but complies
Yes, to this... Ice cream, hut?
>>
>>48596603
Alright, let's go.
>Lurco holds out a hand
>>
>>48596639
>Shi takes his hand
This one is ready, yes.
>>
>>48596703
>Lurco leads her to the cryomancy department to get some ice cream
>>
>scry with the rite of control F(lux)
>Broom: 0 writs
you ought to be ashamed of yourself.
>>
>>48596735
Scruffy thinks brooms are for cleaning, not magic.
>Goes back to sweeping some dirt
>>
Alright, everyone get out! This is the end of the meeting! Get on, git! If you all want to chatter some more go to the archives!
