Depends on which category of 'god' you're referring to.
Demigods/half-gods: Yes, most definitely. It'll be a hell of a job, considering these guys are basically Hercules and the like, but definitely possible.
Pantheonic gods, such as the Greek Gods: Yes, for a certain understanding of "Kill." Some can be replaced, effectively dying as their position and power is transferred to another, who then takes up their role. However, killing one can usually only be accomplished by somebody with equal power; ie another god.
Abrahamic/Omnipotent God(s): Fuck no. The most your efforts will accomplish is getting it's attention. More importantly, if for the sake of argument you could kill it, it would likely induce a series of paradoxes that would lead to the collapse of reality as we know it; in short, killing it would essentially kill everything else too. Luckily, it's a moot point, as this is the full-bullshit tier of dieties, whose powers are as unlimited as those of the most autistic twelve-year-old's super-special OC donut steel. You're not going to kill it. You're just not.

In theory, sure, but in practice the principle qualifiers for being widely known as a god are an incredible capacity to resist being killed and/or an incredible capacity to effectively discourage other entities from killing you.

also, they didn't really do a good job, did they?

I like how Terry Pratchett's Small Gods did it. Gods are basically spirits that gained power and a name based on how many mortals believed in them. To kill a god, or return them to minor spirit form and render them impotent, you just have to cut off the belief. Pratchett did this by having a lineage of selfish priests interpret their own will as divine scripture, which eventually led to some strict theocratic rule and conquest(Read: Crusades/Dark Ages Catholic Church) and rendering the god wholly impotent.
>>
>>48546231
if you kill it's following it looses its power and becomes killable to mortals at some point

The non-pagan one doesn't look so hot either considering iron chariots seem to scare it off.
>>
>>48548837
To be fair, Asian "gods" differ drastically from Western ones. They are more akin to spirits of things (Shinto has a literal god of toilets) and/or are elevated humans who enter a pantheon through reputation.
>>

The question was "Can you kill a god?", which they did. Now, said god didn't particularly care but that's beyond the point.

The world would have been funnier if the Romans kept killing Jesus every time he came back, and converted to Christianism to stop having to deal with that bullshit.

Yeah, Shinto is animistic as fuck and accordingly to it, almost everything can manifest a sentient spiritual personification. From flowers to stones to trees to swords, umbrellas, combs, brooms, lanterns, boats, hot springs, sandals, mirrors, chains, coins, dolls, buckets, chariots, animals such as foxes, cats, raccoon dogs, spiders, fish, monkeys, ravens and snakes, and even mountains, rivers, whole forests and the rain itself.

However, deities such as Amaterasu-Omikami, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, Kagu-Tsuchi and Izanagi-no-Okami belong to a whole different level of power, and can be classified as entities on a par with, let's say, the Greek and Norse gods.

I would say no, generally. A deity should never be something mundane enough that it can simply be killed. Thwarted, banished or disrupted, maybe, but not killed.

There's a line in the old testament where God is helping the Israelites on the battlefield but they still cannot overcome another kingdom's huge number of iron chariots. A humorous reading of this is that God himself was literally helpless against a bunch of wagons.
It was probably intended to mean that the Jews were defeated despite divine aid because their enemy was just too well equipped and powerful. Back in the BCs having a bazillion chariots was shorthand for being a superpower.

Rare but not unheard of. In The Iliad, for example, the mortal warrior Diomedes enters in an unstoppable battle frenzy and goes on a god-stabbing rampage, beating the shit out of Ares and Aphrodite. Had they stayed in the battlefield instead of retreating in panic and tears back to Olympus, both would have been slaughtered like dogs.

I've adapted Small Gods divinity for my games, and whoo boy, it makes for fun times. You can eliminate or weaken a god in several ways;
>Destroy their followers(genocide or conversion, etc.)
>Help another God of that Domain gain more power in it, weakening the target God's powerbase
>Engage in quests to steal artifacts, destroy temples or sacred places, or consecrate land for a rival god
>Participate in Wars, Gods keep score when their followers fight each other

A good way to introduce your players to this theme is to set in lore the recent outcome regarding a minor deity of a racial pantheon you dislike, and how their domain(Profession: Whatever) was usurped by deity of god of Pantheon you like, reducing this god to little more than a weak demigod, and who now walks the world as a simple(Same Profession) or (Racial Pantheon), albeit supernaturally skilled in it.

Or you can tailor it to a deity and factional battle that you know your players will want to support. Nothing motivates players like the idea of ULTIMATE GODLY POWER! So they should be pretty stoked on chasing your story, as opposed to sandboxing in your world.

If you like bizarre and deranged gods, I'm pretty sure the Aztec pantheon would be of your interest. It's a huge circus of horrors of the purest kind.

The goddess Tlazolteotl deserves a special mention. Also called Ixcuina (The Shit Eater), Tetoinnan (She who kills through Lust), Tlaelquarni (The Voracious Whore) and Toci (Mother of Many). The Goddess of Filth, Sin, Vice, Lechery, Unlawful Love, Emotional Ruin and Sexual Misdeeds. She was the patroness of prostitutes and adulterers and the sacred eater of ordure (both literally like physical human waste, and symbolic like the mental detritus of psychological baggage). Her favorite position is squatting, whether to defecate, to give birth to a child or to fornicate, often all at the same time. She was also a goddess of purification who forgave sins and cured diseases caused by misdeeds but this aspect of her generally pales in comparison to the others.

I've heard there are some lost scriptures which detail the month or so Jesus spent on Earth after he came back from the dead.

Maybe the Romans kept trying and failing to come after him like Team Rocket or something.
