Newbie wizards jangle as they walk with all manner of magical charms and symbols, robes printed with constellations and a staff with a dragon clutching a sparkly orb ontop and the biggest, pointiest hat they could find. These twits are usually the first to get their asses kicked because even orcs know to beat down the spellcaster first.
Those who aren't killed learn, they grow wiser and more mature. they look back at that old outfit like you would your yearbook photo as they lounge wearing a vest and tunic, their plain oaken staff etched with a few runes.
Its like guys in the military, it's not the loudmouth high-and-tight marine who's shouting and shit you need to worry about, the guy's barely out of boot, it's the guy sitting quietly drinking his beer and explaining very calmly to the drunk ass marine why he needs to sit the fuck down that you need to watch out for.

Seeing as I play Shadowrun, I always make it a point to make sure you can't tell who is a Mage unless said Mage really likes getting a bullet to the head before they can even cast a spell. But one of the magic shopkeepers my party works with actually is a African-American elf girl.

What problem do you solve by polymorphing yourself into someone who looks too young to be your profession, there by meaning you are unable to practice your profession because no one will take you seriously, your hours of study going wasted because you are unable to practice what you have learned, your poor, destitute, and without income gained from your profession as a wizard you will have to take a lower paying job. Way to not solve ANY problem and just make more for yourself. No Wizard with an int score higher than 8 would polymorph themselves into someone younger than 35.

She's a witch. Wizards don't care if you have some of their hair to cast a spell with, and they don't cut their fingernails so short because you need long fingernails to collect pinches of various dusts, incense, powders, and other ingredients for spellcasting.

A witch keep their hair tied back because they don't want stray hair getting in their face or lost in other people's properties or into their cauldrons or stoves. They keep their nails short because they often use their fingers to take apart small animals, skin creatures, pick up specific piecves of entrails, and other very delicate hands on work that wizards don't use. Also, fingernails in your potions or that get caught on things or torn can be used in magic or alter your potions.

If you think skin color has anything to do with it, you're going to get yourself killed while you're witch hunting or trying to crucify a wizard or murder that itinerant necromancer because you didn't look at what was really important.
