Everyone knows about Record of Lodoss War, but it saddens me that so few people are aware of Ryo Mizuno's Starship Operators. Coincidentally, the anime is directed by Takashi Watanabe, the director of the Slayers series, but this is quite a departure from those two familiar titles of anime fantasy.
It's one of the best short sci-fi series you can watch, following the trials of a class of space cadets fighting against a conquering superpower.
If you are planning a space combat campaign, I can't recommend this series enough. It does an amazing job of combining the practical considerations of space combat with complex interstellar politics and media relations, while somehow still feeling very human, largely thanks to the characters.
Various young specialists are forced to step out of their comfort zones, learning from each other while fighting against a gallery of ingenious ships and experienced tacticians. Each battle is treated like a complex puzzle, with the ship's tactician, Sinon, doing her best to unravel the secret to victory.
I'd say give it a watch, because what it lacks for in easy marketability, it makes up with good writing. Even if you're not planning on running a space combat campaign, there's enough great ideas in this short series that you might be compelled to start one.
I'll consider it.
But has it got space lesbians and science babies?

And School Girl Insurance Fraud because they, in the proud tradition of their parents, are actually kind of inoffensive, so much so that it's easier for the ships they accost to knuckle under because everyone sort of knows they are genteel and won't REALLY cause that much trouble, probably?

The schoolgirls were getting insurance fraud contracts through the broker dude, mind.
It seemed to be a pretty common scheme amongst all the pirates.
Or, privateers. They were licensed? That's privateering, right?

That show would have been better if Marika and Chiaki actually lezzed out.

Privateer or corsair would have made more sense. It isn't really piracy as piracy is a crime, while what they did ws within the bounds of the law because they are good girls.

This show was such a disappointment.
The main character is cute, but the story is weak because they deflate any crisis before it actually becomes one. It had weak science fiction, and its moe clashed rather than complimented with it.

I don't. What's it about?

It's an anime adapted straight from a Sword World replay, which makes it about as /tg/ related as it gets. Pretty fun if you want a very tabletop inspired high fantasy show.

But it was a legitimately boring show. Girl on girl action would have been better than what we were given. They should have at least tried to resolve more of the last arc instead of giving us the standard "Buy the LNs" ending.

I tried watching it, but the first few episodes just failed to grab me at all. I admit, it had a pretty cool idea behind it, but it didn't really do anything with it.

The last arc (and the race one, and the movie) was anime original though. The LNs take a very different direction after the Cosplay Pirates story.

That explains it then, anime original bits always seem messy.

Isn't that the one where they're funding their war by starring in a reality TV show?

Go watch it.

Yes. That's also the in-universe reason why the main bridge is primarily staffed by girls (for better ratings).
As silly as this may sound, the tone of the show has it seem like less of a reality show and more of an on-going documentary, though the network pressures do play a role in making life harder for the cadets. It's a bit of weak writing, since it's often used to justify why they can't just keep running away from battles that seem impossible to win (since no one would watch a show if all they did was run), but it's a little bit of background hocus to keep the show exciting, with the main focus being the battles.
