All they know is the pain they currently feel, the planetary kill-squads that have come for them and their families, the crushing nothingness they hear from the void travelers. They just want something to make it all stop.

People don't consciously turn to chaos, at least not the vast majority of them. They turn because they're desperate and they don't know better. Their lives were completely fucked and the abstract belief in some all-seeing deity who seemingly does fuck-all doesn't cut it for them.

Because corruption is a gradual and slow process, not an immediate one that happens overnight (except in rare circumstances). Most people only "commit" to a Chaos God once they have fallen far too far down the path of corruption to back out, and suddenly their patron reveals who/what they actually have become.

A scribe and archaeologist finds a proscribed tome in the ruins of a fallen human settlement. While they know it's not well-understood, they decide to take a look anyway, because their academic curiosity gets the better of them. They just gotta KNOW what happened here, and who these people were (They're true servants of the Emperor after all, what could possibly happen to them?). The read the tome, and nothing happens to them...but they have to know more. They begin to devote more and more of their time to learning about these people, and read more and more of their works. Eventually, they begin to "adapt" to their mindset, as they read more of their culture, and begin to understand their world-view. They fall deeper and deeper into proscribed texts, and begin to secretly and fearfully enact rituals and seek out more and more information because they HAVE to know more. Eventually, a voice whispers into their minds in their dreams - the voice can give them everything they want, and all the voice asks in return is to keep doing what they're already doing. This deal is amazing for them, but sooner the voice begins to make more and more demands. Eventually, they're so far down the rabbit hole of corruption that they can't see the sun anymore, and it is only then that it's revealed who the voice in their mind was. Tzeentch demands their fealty, and they give it "willingly" because they have no other option but to do so.

Same thing with Slaanesh and Nurgle. You crave power and sensation? It starts with the chem-dealer down the street who gives you a new chem he got from his contacts under hive. You want to live forever? A priest has an offer for you.

So you're a bored senior administrator on some hive world; another countless man among trillion who blows off his stress at the bar every night but it's just not been enough for you. So your friend tell you about this club that's opened up down the way that's crazy.

So you go and shit's off the chain. It's the best party you've ever had. Everyone's talking about love and there's free drugs and the booze tastes great. Now, all the other bars and clubs seem like shit compared to that place.

So you keep hanging out there and it gets wilder and wilder, but that's alright. You're having fun, meeting great new friends and what they're saying sounds really good especially after a few glasses.

Next all of a sudden arbites are banging the walls down and shooting your new friends. Someone's chanting and twisting into a hermaprhodite who's tearing the arbites to pieces and you really wanna fuck it.

Papa Nurgle is benevolent. He will end the terrible suffering his plagues have brought to your world, and all you have to do is help him spread it elsewhere. Truly selfless.

Also libertarians would probably all join Chaos. The imperium is 1984 and Chaos lets you do whatever you want, at least initially and/or if you're a bad enough dude.

Shitposting aside, The whole, "Benevolent Nurgle" thing is a meme, and grossly misunderstands the way that Nurgle actually works.

He is HUGELY controlling of you and your life. You have to constantly "prove" your love to him ("If you truly loved me, you'd do <x>,") or he'll punish you for disobedience. He does not understand nor care why you could possibly not love him back, and will do EVERYTHING to make sure you do not leave, even if it means he snubs you from existence. If he can't have you, then nobody can, and you're better off dead than without him. He views you purely as an object of affection, and not as a person, and will treat you as an object when you do not toe his very, very strict line.
