It's probably to clarify that these cards are playable in Standard or something.

Actually I'm curious if anyone knows, can you play an old copy of a card that's been reprinted in standard? Or do you have to use the new version?

You can. Also turn off the name

Do... Do you actually think I drew these? If not you can look around to try to find where I stole the art, but I think you'll be disappointed.

I don't know why they chose those symbols, probably because that's where some of those cards came from.

Comic books always have that hypothetical "zombie-universe" lately. It's just an especially funny joke since one of the Gatewatch IS a necromancer who would bring them back from the dead just because.

/tg/ isn't a hive mind, but I hate Chandra because she's a knockoff Jaya Ballard, another character who wasn't charming beyond the first time. Chandra is just pure distilled selfishness, and has nothing to offer anybody beyond raw power.

I dislike the Gatewatch as a whole. Liliana is a cunt, Nissa's a moron, I'm pretty sure Kytheon isn't actually Gideon, he just killed the original character concept and slipped into his skin because he's more marketable, and Jace's face is all over everything all the time. But Chandra is a one-trick pony who is an awful human being who should have been executed for using her pyromancy to fucking rob people.

"Oh, don't be so aghast. I did us all a favor. Getting rid of dangerous problems is what you wanted me to do, right? Thats what this little club is for?"

And then Lilianna bullies Jace into buying her dinner because she did a good deed.
>>
So how come Tamiyo didn't join the gatewatch?
>>
>>48358269
Because joining the Gatewatch implies she will have to protect things by fighting, which she doesn't want to do, she is a Researcher and that is all that she wants to do with her life, not worry about protecting the world.

Basically she too busy sciencing to care about shit falling apart.
>>
>>48357830
>but I hate Chandra because she's a knockoff Jaya Ballard, another character who wasn't charming beyond the first time
I hate her less because they had the torch-hand-off by having her say something nice about wanting to meet Jaya Ballard.

She's not Jaya Ballard, but she's an alright 'red-kills-with-fire' character from what I've seen.

>>48357830
Nissa isn't a moron. She's a xenophobic genocider that's been hand-waved into being a freaky-deaky tree-lover.
>>
>>48358269
Because Tamiyo is actually an interesting character and the Gatewatch is shit.
>>
>>48358322
Okay I kinda get that.

Was this in a novel or uncharted realms?
Also wasn't Kiora slightly invested in fucking up some Eldrazi, why hasn't she helped?
>>
>>48358269

She is an observer, not a solver.

She didn't even want to get involved with the whole 'Innistrad is getting wrecked by cryptolith weirdness making the Angels insane' problem. She had the ability to purify Avacyn and solve the problem with the Angels single-handedly. She chose not to do so, however, because doing that would require her to not only unbind tools that she swore she would never use, but it generally violates her policy of non-interference.

Think of her like a nature photographer. She studies, she writes things down, she figures out patterns and puzzles in the pursuit of knowledge. But if she sees a gazelle getting chowed on by a lion, it isn't her place to step in on the gazelle's behalf. As a planeswalker, she isn't supposed to be here.

She also thinks that Jace is an idiot, and that him and the Gatewatch throwing themselves into the middle of situations they don't understand is going to end up with them killing a lot of people through their own brash ignorance.

The only reason she un-mindfucked Jace is because an insane telepathic planeswalker was, in her eyes, too big a danger to ignore since he could potentially drive entire planes to madness as well.

At the same time, she was perfectly fine with dying at the hands of Avacyn rather than violating her oaths.

So she isn't going to babysit the Gatewatch and shake her head every time they do something stupid. She has research to do instead. Stories to learn.
>>
WHAT'S HIP AND COOL WITH THE KIDS

OH YEAH ZOMBIES

JUST SLAP THAT SHIT ON THERE

God, fuck zombies.
>>
>>48358399

Kiora was invested in saving her home plane of Zendikar.

Zendikar has been saved.

She also isn't a part of the Gatewatch. She clearly doesn't play well with others either, she almost fucked over the plan on Zendikar on multiple occasions because she wanted to 1v1 Ulamog using the god-weapon she stole from Theros.

She did help in the end, though, using the bident to dump some of the Roil into the oceans of other planes and lessen the load of binding the Eldrazi 100% into Zendikar. Considering that Zendikar very nearly shattered like glass as it was, without her help there is a good chance that Zendikar would have exploded then and there and both Ulamog and Kozilek would have survived to continue being major threats.

>>
>>48358427
>She had the ability to purify Avacyn and solve the problem with the Angels single-handedly. She chose not to

This is an amazing Blue action. It's commendable, really, that they've got a planeswalker in the current cast who is actually limited by their ideals and principles.
>>
>>48355189
Crisp. Crisp.
>>
>>48358877

I feel like that actually explained her being part white in this expansion more, actually.

Blue tends to have a very utilitarian approach to things, albeit not as much as black, while White does tend to have the kind of thinking where forbidden means FORBIDDEN, even if it's the only way to save your life.

She is, so far, one of the only blue characters we've seen that can separate "can" and "should," so that's progress.
>>
>>48358733
I think it's more that she didn't get much reference in EMN rather than being completely dropped. One of the latest story articles implied that she and Ulrich were fighting against corrupted werewolves. Other than that I don't think I saw a single flavor text referencing her.

We're not entirely sure. I think most people assume she's between 400-1,000 years old, because she knew about Innistrad and Sorin "relatively early on" in her Planeswalker days, and even then she knew to not fuck around with Sorin on Innistrad.

But then the Mending happened, and everyone got de-powered from their godlike status.

I honestly treat Wizards' market research on what does or doesn't sell and what people do and don't like over the incessant childish bitching of a group that barely grasps simple storylines and can't understand the mechanics to save their fucking life.

I agree.

They should do what they did back in the day and let every set feature an appealing, consistent group of characters from a variety of colors (so every color gets someone to root for) flying around fighting bad guys for the sake of the Multiverse. That would be so sweet.

Instead, we got the fuckin' Jacetice League, and now every fucking set features the same fucking group of characters from a fucking """""diverse"""""" variety of colors (uh, pandering, much?) flying around like capeshit superheroes fighting bad guys for the "sake of the Multiverse."

>>
>>48371450
>>48371488
Yeah, they retconned her old edgy backstory so she's almost the opposite of what she used to be. IIRC she first 'walked to Lorwyn and complained to the elves there that they were being a little too edgy with the whole "gas the eyeblights" thing, then planeswalked away when the Aurora showed up.
>>
>>48371341
Figures. The one time Nissa is right about something, nobody listens to her.

I have literally never met a person at my LGS that likes the Gatewatch. They either don't care or think it's retarded normie pandering. Practically everyone hates it, Maro, tumblr isn't everyone.

Market research is why the video games industry collectively shit its pants last decade and gutted themselves to make more brown action-adventures with bland, brown haired 30something protagonists.
Because "market research" for an entertainment industry almost always means focus testing with a very small part of the market in a vacuum, and is almost never indicative of what the market really wants (Or even what the focus tested group wants, since the methods and formality of testing skew their results).
>>
>>48371463
In fairness, both Weatherlight and the Gatewatch are stupid, and the best stories were self-contained or had a minimal involvement with a larger myth-arc.
>>
>>48371723
To be fair, that's how it always works.

Yes and as we've seen, the video game industry has churned out financial flop out of financial flop and is close to closing its collective doors forever. Hollywood too.

Plus, it's not like there've been any enjoyable video games or movies in the past ten years.

Is it just me or is the new Lili card utter trash?

I've met several.
Also? If you're afraid of normies, I want you out of my Goddamned hobby.

>>48371967
But you're both wrong. Anyone who bitches about how "games are all the same" is probably the kind of person who refuses to play any indie games that are different and unique.
Also, bland and brown isn't even in. You can probably expect more colourful Hero games in the coming years as games like Smite and Overwatch get more and more popular.

Wow. I never realized. You should be like a detective or something

Not him but pandering to the lowest common denominator of human results in quality things like big bang theory
>>
>>48373950
Except that Magic is not The Big Bang Theory. It's a fucking Saturday morning cartoon for children and it does that perfectly well and the story is nowhere near as bad as the people in these threads--most of whom haven't even read the story to begin with--say that it is.

The people in these threads also want the mechanics to be a hyperconfusing clusterfuck of old rules that they don't actually understand but think they do. Every /tg/ Magic thread is filled with the kind of people who want Damage on the stack without understanding how the stack even works.
>>
>>48373665
Just you. It's actually not bad. Her plus is alright, though nothing too exciting or game changing. Her minus is where it gets fun though. Her ultimate is nothing to write home about.

Wizards can make sets more complex with difficult. The first modern masters had no vanilla card and it's draft was awesome for that. But the skill needed to draft it over other sets wasn't that much higher. Compare it to theros draft where it was "who can draft more volpine Goliaths"
Personally, i don't want banding back. I'd be happier with less vanilla cards and stronger noncreature spells.
>>
>>48370666
>Urza was the best thing in Magic
Urza was a cunt and the only good part of his entire fucking story is the Brother's War. Everything thereafter is shit.
>>
>>48374359
It's also a game that relies on trash commons. You can't have every set be like Modern Masters.
>>
>>48374498
Why not? What's wrong with giving Commons mediocre abilities? Even if they're overcosted, like bestow. It adds depth
>>
>>48374604
If commons have no purpose whatsoever, and are conceivably worthless after the initial draft is over, they shouldn't exist. If, however, they need to be correctly used because the show up in volume, or they exist to support a larger strategy, then that's different.
>>
>>48374233
Sounds like trash to me.

>less vanilla cards
Fucking THIS

Evergreen keywords exist for a reason - they're simple and show up so often that even new players understand what they mean quickly. At this stage in the game's development there is no need for vanilla cards beyond pure tribal support or above-curve power/toughness. Every card should be, at minimum, a french vanilla. If you replaced every vanilla creature in a set with tramplers, hasters, flyers, deathtouchers, first strikers, whatever, things would only be improved. When a below-curve vanilla creature is printed common and I know I'm going to end up with half a dozen of them, it makes me want to not bother with boosters.

>there is no need for vanilla cards beyond pure tribal support or above-curve power/toughness
>posts picture of a below-curve vanilla Wolf creature in a set with Wolf/Werewolf tribal
I kind of agree with you, but that's an unfortunate example
>>
>>48374706
That would make limited hard to balance. Having better creatures would require better removal, and then that removal is only going to be found at higher rarities. It's fine as it, WotC tries to make limited fun and seems to do well every few years.
>>
>>48374649
>If commons have no purpose whatsoever, and are conceivably worthless after the initial draft is over, they shouldn't exist
This is only if you assume Limited isn't a viable format.

>>48374706
Vanillas also exist for a reason.
>it makes me want to not bother with boosters.
Anon, unless you're in middle school, you should be buying singles.
Buying boosters is basically gambling, and not worth it. The boosters are for super casuals who don't understand the game and who just need to see a lot of cards and understand how things work, and for people playing Limited formats where half the point is to make do with what you have.

And the reason one of those 4/5s is GGG and the other is 4G is because the sets they're from are very different. For one thing, SOI draft has ways to buff up Wolves. Vanilla cards exist for several reasons.

Another reason is because the game is incredibly complex. Modern Masters had, what, a 7$ price tag? It is not a set for entry level players. MNM was not intended to be someone's first game of Magic.

And, yet another reason: Sets with every card being interactive and complex are more difficult to actually create, and you run the risk of creating sameyness, which isn't such a problem when you're working with cards that won't get played outside of the format they're created for.

And, sure, simple "moneygrubbing". Most of the cards in a pack are worthless. But would you buy a pack if they stayed the same price but cut out the commons?
>>
>>48374753
Not really, again looking at modern masters there was good removal and good creature balance. Or conspiracy, with swords to plowshares that was put in but not op
>>
>>48374818
>This is only if you assume Limited isn't a viable format.
No it isn't. I love limited, it's probably my favourite format. I just think that cards should have lasting appeal, otherwise they're literally wasted cardboard.
>>
>>48375112
They served their function. That means they're not wasted.

They're not for you.

>Sorinfags miss the point yet again
It's not about her "right".
She's fucking nutso, and Sorin betrayed her. Sorin made her nutso. He tortured her and betrayed her and then she got loose and he tried to fight instead of fixing the problem. It's not about what's right, it's about the fact that her motivations are understandable.

And I'm not a nahirifag, I just hate Sorin. He's a dick, and he backstabbed a friend because he's a shitty person.

>>48358427
Your analysis is all well and good, but you're failing to acknowledge that the spells she swore not to use were things like "That time Serra's Plane was obliterated". She doesn't refuse to use them because she promised not to. She promised not to because they're all world ending reality destroying high level spells. It's not so much that she's a nature photographer or has a Prime Directive as it is that she didn't want to go nuclear.

Sorin and Nahiri both are shitty people who deserve to die.

Elspeth and Ajani are the only walker team worth anything.

Nahiri is an interesting character, though.
But I like "I've been through hell and now I'm crazy".
I also like the fighting between Sorin and Nahiri, because it's literally just a game of Magic. They're oldwalkers throwing armies at each other.
