There's some weird dissonance in some of the material about the alignment of Kobolds. For instance, if you look at D&D 3.5's "Races of the Dragon," the book with the most kobold related information, they read almost completely as lawful neutral. A heavy emphasis on the community, family and ritual, a justified historical hatred of gnomes (which is reciprocated harshly), and given their tendency towards subterranean expansion, they don't necessarily clash with other races unless they're in the wrong place. Kurtulmak's (and by extension, kobolds in general) status as Lawful Evil doesn't really seem too born out. Gnomes and Dwarves like traps too, and they get to be good by default.
>>
>>48344630
They're supposed to be extremely xenophobic, as well, attacking other races on sight.

Of course, I've read that material too, and it doesn't really hold up to scrutiny.

What do kobolds eat? How do they find fresh water? If they have so many raw materials (ores, gems), why aren't they constantly under attack, instead of being seen as vermin by other races?

Furthermore, why aren't kobolds ever a dangerous force in any setting I've seen? They're cunning, they have strong traditions and tribe bonds, they have massive amounts of wealth. Yet, in every setting, they're below all the other dragonlike races in society.

It makes me want to write a setting where kobolds consider themselves to be the greatest of the non-dragon races, and have some kobold religions encourage kobolds to kill and eat dragons. Having them as this semi-terrifying, individually weak threat that wreaks havoc just by existing.

Has anyone read the Ren of Atikala series? The first book was free and I enjoyed it, was wondering if the others are worthy buying. I really enjoyed the way it showed how their society worked, and how it managed to show how a largely Evil race can come to be while seeing themselves as in the right. Them seeing humans, elves, and the like as the monstrous races that they treat the same way PCs would generally treat kobolds or goblins was probably one of my favorite bits, even if it's kind of simple.

Kobolds in my setting are pretty worthless. They die in droves, their society is in shambles, and most people view them as pests. Cockroaches that can talk, basically.

My players kept running into one particular Kobold, and they kept sparing his life. At some point he became a friend of sorts.

They had no idea it was actually Kurtulmak himself, disguised as a mortal, until later on. Now that an over-god has decided he wants to kill half the gods, they're actually fighting to help poor Kurtulmak survive, and improve himself. It's been fun so far.

Well, it didn't, from his perspective.

He was trying to improve the lives of Kobolds by working directly with them. Unfortunately, literally every single one of the groups he joined wound up with most of the members dead, and he tried to do the disguise thing for almost fifty years.

There was another plot point where the players had the opportunity to kill a god with no consequence (my world's cosmology is a bit fucky but it makes sense in context). Poor Kurtulmak personally requested that they kill him so somebody more competent could take his place.

He's in much better spirits now, thankfully.

Well, in my setting, all the gods have rooms in this big temple at the center of the world, which they get complete control over. This temple is ludicrously magical, and gods which try to defy its rules wind up dead (or worse). Every few decades they have a big festival where they all show up in their temples and let their followers in.

Secretly, this festival was actually because the gods all had to go to a giant performance meeting with their own creators, twin over-gods who made the world and everything in it. Occasionally, however, the over-gods fail to show up. In these cases, mortals find a bunch of powerful artifacts, all of which they can use to kill gods at the meeting. The gods, naturally, believed this to be a form of punishment for bad behavior. Kurtulmak believed himself to be the major cause of this round of punishment, a theory which most of the gods agreed on—he was, by far, the most useless and pathetic deity in the entire world.

Thankfully he escaped death because the players wanted to kill somebody else instead. Not that they could have killed him in the first place—the previously unknown third overgod sort of crashed the party. #3 then decided that there were way too many gods, and decided to kill half of them. Being a fair soul, he gave them 256 days to "impress" him before he made his decision, which has sort of thrust the entire fucking world into chaos. The fact that he significantly reduced the power of all the gods so they'd be on equal footing actually made everything worse.

I have a setting guidebook that I'm working on if this cosmology sounds interesting. It's nowhere near polished enough to post yet but I'm plodding along.

I rolled up a kobold as a character a while back for a campaign a friend started. It's been a blast.

I'm satisfied with myself for playing him in such a way that he naturally acquired a reputation amongst the party as cowardly and neurotic. I imagine he's actually been a bit of a pain for the DM, as he wants NOTHING to do with most plot hooks, as a consequence of his character, but he tends to get dragged into them by his party members- physically so, in one recent case.

I wonder how many members of the armies of devils and demons we went over will remember the puzzling sight of a minotaur enchanted with flight, soaring over them while clutching a screaming, swearing kobold in one arm, like he was a football.

I enjoy dragons who treat their kobolds with that "only I'm allowed to mess with my little brother" attitude. Like, they casually use them for odds and ends (treasure transport, sentry, paperweight...) and might, rarely, pick up and eat one as a snack, but the swordsman and his friends who just killed the four kobolds playing a game of Cribbage for no apparent reason are immediately on his shitlist.

>>48397815
First two definitely, and the third if you can get away with it, but they can be clever.
>>
>>48397940
It's super easy to think that a dragon might consider their kobolds as part of their hoard. If they do something to them, that's fine, but anyone else?

Well allowing that would be downright undraconic.

And other races might look down on kobolds, but dragons look down on everyone, and kobolds at least LOOK dragony.

>This thread has made me fall in love with Kobolds

Kobolds kinda ended up at the bottom of the barrel for me as a DM, but I think that's just cause I hardly have any experience with them in games.

The only time I've ever seen them in a game was when the GM had a bounty hunter hunt our party. Said bounty hunter had two Kobold slaves that would stack up kids-in-a-trenchcoat style and assemble a javelin turret.

They seem pretty cool though, I really wanna play one now. What is playing a Kobold like?

The T-Rex will bite one in half immediately (no save) if they fail to notice it first.

Yuan-Ti are going to try and kill them (as opposed to ignoring them for being non-threats) as part of their quest to purge the unworthy scaled races.

Giant bees can sting them to death (and one of them will accidentally disturb the hive if they're not careful)

Most of the poison plants they can stumble into will have CON saves they're unlikely to make, and the resulting illness will probably kill them.

As a vorefag myself, that's probably paranoid. Obviously don't mention it incredibly frequently, and don't devour the party, but dragons eating is fine, especially if you don't go out of the way to mention how it didn't bite down and the snack is alive and fruitlessly struggling down its throat (most vore is soft vore, where there's no gore).

It's funny, I ALWAYS imagined kobolds as lightly furred, like a short-haired dog... or a terrier if particularly scruffy, waay before the cutebold stuff ever became a product of Dwarf Fortress/Weaver.

Probably because I was first exposed to them through Angband, ToME and derivative -bands in which they were just described as dog-headed humanoids with no mention of draconic or lizard attributes (ancient copies of Angband was also how I was first introduced to the basic ADnD derived RPG stats, hit dice, and weapon dice mechanics.)

What's really funny about that is that its a common mistranslation of the original kobold from D&D which is a small scaled humanoid with a dog-like head and a ratlike tail. Most people misinterpret the doglike and ratlike descriptor to mean literally a dog's head and rat tail instead of the more appropriate vaguely shaped like a dog's head and rats tail. And then they forget about the scales and think they are dogs.

This is why japanese kobolds are dogs, and lots of early videogames that were based in some way on old school D&D have the same issue.

Pic related, please ignore the 2e Monstrous Compendium, the artist was an idiot who ignored the description.

Really, you would think that a lot of dragons wouldn't want Kobold servants. I mean, they're a pretty pathetic thing to have associated with you, you know?

Eaten by the aligator that's in the river

Picked up and dropped from a great height by one of the Griffins

Headhunted by lizard folk (who the party can make friendly via a variety of ways, especially since the Yuan-ti want to exterminate them too).

I dunno, dragons as a general rule tend to be pretty prideful, and nothing's quite as big a boost to your ego as being worshiped as a god-king/queen. They might not care one whit about their welfare, they may ignore them except when they want to be showered in adulation. They may accept them if they bring tribute, and allow them to dig mines to bring the precious gems and metals from the earth to their waiting hoard. They may even decide to make them "vassals" so that their subjects may build massive tunnels, a secure Dragon Hoard Vault and Bedchamber, a Hatchery for their eggs, and fortifications to bar the way for all but the most determined(or least wise) thieves.

That was cute, but the ending was fucking depressing.

I've noticed that a lot about fantasy stuff. For the vast, vast majority of citizens in the average fantasy world, your life is fucking awful. You work a menial job for little pay and quietly suffer until you die at age 35. If you're not a wizard or a knight or something it's pretty actually fairly awful.

It's starting to make me lose interest in the genre in some ways.

Well, since that little slice of kobold sadness is over let's look towards a brighter side.

How often do you encounter or make kobold towns or cities? They're industrious, cunning and numerous so by all rights every now and then one tribe manages to make it to the bigger leagues.
How do kobold dominated towns differ to human dominated ones?

>>48437701
Yeah, that's kind of a downer. But so is reality I guess. Majority of humans lead a crappy life.
The kobold in the main storyline of that comic gets to be a squire to a paladin though and be pretty badass. Pity the artist stopped making it.

I don't really know if the majority of humans lead a crappy life. I think that life is a big pile of ups and downs, but the people I know personally are more about the ups.

I don't know, it's the lack of hope in fantasy worlds that gets me. Maybe you stop the evil wizard, sure, but all those peasants are going to have those same lives forever. Social mobility in the modern-day US isn't great but at least it's possible, you know?

It's one of the reasons that I haven't really gotten into the systems of government in the setting guidebook I'm making (which I posted earlier). In my heart I want to make most things closer to democracy, but I know that a lot of people who play fantasy games tend to enjoy Kings and Queens, even if I personally dislike them.

Then again, this is my setting, so maybe I can say "fuck it" and have most governments be at least somewhat merit-based, damn what the haters say. It's already not really medieval in terms of tone, come to think of it.

Majority of humans aren't First World. Though depending on setting peasants can benefit from the magic mart too.
Clean water for a village can be secured via endless decanters and water towers.
Totems of growth and fertility strung up in the fields.. little bits of magic here and there that help.

Unless of course you're playing low fantasy medical but hell, life just sucked back then for everyone without copious amounts of gold and whores.

Oh yeah, forgot to say; good in between for a Monarchy and a Democracy is a Dictatorship.
No, the other kind. Similar to the Roman kind, have a senate and an elected dictator who has near supreme power but can't change the election process.
Plus it lets players get involved in some politics as they might want to influence the senate to have a new leader or keep the one they like in charge.

The majority of humans aren't first world, but even poorer humans are in better conditions than they've ever been. Sweatshops suck but they're a hell of a lot better than sustenance farming.

The setting is ridiculously high magic already, which helps. Here, have a slightly-updated guidebook.

As for government types, I think I can just have a hugely wide variety, considering the scope of the world.

I'm basing this on the revealed preferences of all the people who decide to work in sweatshops instead of doing sustenance farming, as well as the global starvation and extreme poverty rates (which have both been tanking since the 80s).

In my setting kobolds come in three flavours, rat, lizard and armadillo
Lizard kobolds are the smartest and most charismatic, often when kobold settlements pop up it is a lizard kobold as the leader
Rat kobolds are generally quite loyal but sneaky and also the most cowardly
Armadillo kobolds are the biggest, usually double the size of the two other species, and the bravest, in that too stupid to run away even if they should
Kobolds are usually seen as pests but businesses are starting to take advantage of hard working creatures that could be housed in a wardrobe and fed with scraps, this, combined with kobolds natural tendency to attach themselves to whatever shows them any affection, tends to lead to close relationships between man and kobold
This means that depending on where you go kobolds could be anything from equal citizens, to pets, to vermin, and sometimes all 3 in the same city

I played a Kobold that'd basically been a worthless street rat until a paladin (my friend's player) took him in.
He became utterly loyal to her, and did the tasks that required more finesse, and less smashing/smiting (her specialty). He also helped her hold back when it was important
It was a really cute dynamic, I just wish it hadn't been a mini-campaign

Backbreaking labor every day of your life
Your childhood sweetheart, like everyone in the village, has warts and bad teeth and poor hygiene.
Occasional festivals are the only time you get to not work all day
Constantly fear getting sick, which is basically a death sentence.
Constantly hunger for food and pure water.
The constant beer drinking was because they drank small beer, which had a very low alcohol content. Small beer has enough alcohol to kill the germs in it, making it a safer alternative to water.
Heavy taxation from your liege.

>Die at age 35

Are you people fucking retarded?

That has never been the average age of death for healthy adults at any point in human history.

The reason people think that is because of averages. Child mortality rates were through the roof for most of human history until recently, which lower the average dramatically.

The "Normal people only used to live to 35 before croaking!" meme needs to fucking die.
>>
>>48455396
I never said they would die at the age of 35, because I know it's not true.
But getting sick was still very dangerous and living long isn't exactly great when your quality of life is in the gutter.
>>
>>48455420
>I never said they would die at the age of 35

>" quietly suffer until you die at age 35 "

Even in a non-literal usage, this meme needs to die. A large percentage of people lived well into their 60s with no complications. If that many people died constantly of disease, we wouldn't still fucking be around.

Humanity revived itself from a population at one point of around 10,000 people. In the grand scheme of things, while a small percentage (slightly larger back then) die of disease and other problems, acting like a statistically significant amount of people died of this shit to make life so absolutely horrific and terrible for people is dumb.

Kobolds are weak and I see two ways to play this. The first is where the kobold owns up to his weakness and willingly uses underhanded tactics to gain the advantage which seems like a common way to play smaller, weaker races. The obvious example would be a rogue.

The other, and the way that I usually play, is to find ways to gain strength or power. Be a kobold barbarian who gets angry when others call him small/weak or an alchemist who uses potions and mixtures to get rid of the inherent weaknesses of kobolds. Alternatively gain magical power instead of physical.

As for personality, I usually stick to the roots of being (mildly) xenophobic and sometimes prideful for having even the smallest hint of draconic blood.

So somtime down the line, my GM is going to be running 5e in a city based steampunkish(he's still not exactly sure on the tech level) world. The idea is that there is a large gap between the rich and the poor. There is no middle class, or if there is, their numbers are negligible. Im wanting to play a kobold with a smallman complex. He's probably going to be a rouge, depending on if guns are a thing. But im stuck on his background. I can't decide if I am him to be a highwayman/bandit kind of guy, or more of a robin hood type person. But Iv'e also had thoughts of making him, like super optomistic and cheery. It all sounds like it would be fun to play, but i cant decide. Wat do tg?

They're still draconic after all, gotta have them hoards.
Maybe they see the whole under city as sort of one huge kobold warren, they're all in this together so let's raid the rich folks all sneaky-drakey like and add their gold to the 'warrens' instead!

What if you play a sort of reverse Robin Hood? Not quite stealing from the poor and giving to the rich but work for the government. Did somebody not pay their taxes? You go steal it for them instead. As for being all cheery...I dunno. Be happy that you work for the upper class or something?

>>
>>48458921
Thats why I wanted to go with some sort of bandit motif. Because it would appeal to his draconic sense of getting shiny things. The DM was talking about there being a black market type thing around, maybe I'll have him be from that.
>>48459068
>>48459158
This sounds entertaining. I might actually use this. It fits with the draconic 'get shiny things'. It also makes me think, that if he's all happy and optimistic, he wouldn't even really be taking money, so much as practical shit like food/supplies. This sounds great. I mean, how can somone actually "own" a tree(or the fruit on it), it just grows out of the ground, and they are every ware.

Because Paizo are fucking incompetents.

Kobolds work out to having a total of MINUS FOUR modifier to their ability scores from race. Even fucking GOBLINS break even, and those retarded little motherfuckers do it with +4 Dexterity

When I played a Kobold girl in a game a while back, the DM was nice enough to let me swap that abortion of a statblock for a standard +2 +2 -2. Good Intelligence and Dexterity, poor Strength.

We worked it out that it was because a good portion of the kobold race had integrated into normal society, and so city kobolds were overall less shit than the 'wild' ones still living out innawoods due to having things like proper nutrition and access to healthcare.

Kobolds are great workers, but utterly terrible merchants

Anytime non-kobold merchants see kobolds building up industry, they send in adventurersso that the 'bolds are back to gathering resources and selling them dirt cheap to make ends meet.
>>
My favourite DnD character I have ever made was a Kobold Ranger called Dak Dak. He started following a dragonborn paladin named Baresh around, worshipping him as if he were a proper dragon.

The paladin spent most of his time pursuing a cult of devil worshippers who were infiltrating every level of government in the kingdom, and trying to teach Dak Dak how to deal with civilized society.

Unfortunetely, the cult slowly started to bring Baresh around to their way of thinking, drawing him on with a promise of release from a curse that he had contracted dealing with the symptoms of the cults infestation. He tried to convert Dak Dak but he had already taken too many of the Paladins teachings to heart. He left Dak Dak alone and broken on the side of a mountain as he went into the cult stronghold, the kobold unable to bring himself to kill his teacher.

It was a fun campaign
>>
>>48468600
...kinda like us and the third world countries, then? I can dig it.
>>
>>48468600
>>48468717
They wouldn't send adventurers. Not if they're smart, anyway. The industrial revolution made goods vastly cheaper. The merchants shouldn't really give a shit that the kobolds are living happy lives, since they get to benefit from higher kobold productivity as well.

Of course, people are pretty fucking irrational, so maybe that doesn't happen—especially if the kobolds don't have any kind of free mobility of labor.
>>
>>48469096
Why trade wages for ore when you can just sell a pickaxe for a few pounds of ore. Just don't like the kobolds build up to forging their own stuff and becoming self-sufficient or else your profit margins will suffer

>tfw adventurers sell you the same pickaxe you traded to the kobolds for 1/2 price
>>
>>48468600
>>48469096

Kobolds could fuel the industrial revolution.

Think about it, fast breeding, totally expendable, well suited to simple repetitive tasks. Who cares if a few dozen a day get mashed while picking up cotton rags from the mechanical jenny, they are easily replaced

They could come to replace most labour in societies, causing a luddite movement that seeks to destroy industrial machines and drive out the sub-human kobolds and bring back craftsman-centred labour
>>
>>48469164
Then again the industrial revolution didn't happen in China, which has a long, long, long history of having expendable peasants in ample supply.
>>
>>48469152
The kobolds (if they're smart) will always want to trade with you, because trade is welfare-improving due to comparative advantage. The kobolds can make textiles, and you trade them food in return. You make your money as a merchant by providing the trading service itself and charging fees.

>>48469207
>>48469164
The industrial revolution requires quick access to coal, enclosed land, and accessible iron. Kobolds may be able to help, but doing it on their own would be hard.
>>
>>48469230
I mean the Kobolds used more as a labour source rather than the instegators of the revolution. Maybe similar to the Irish when things kicked off in the new world. They came swarming over in search of a better life, but were mostly just exploited as serf-like labour
>>
>>48469294
I gave the Kobolds strong Cockney accents in my campaign, but, come to think of it, Irish Kobolds would have been better.
>>
>>48345202
>why aren't kobolds ever a dangerous force in any setting I've seen
They are usually 3'2, cowaerdly and not very good at anything engineering related than traps.

A dragon is a terrifying force for a nation of superior beasts, kobolds really stand no chance to compete.

Kobolds make me all kinds of butthurt, /tg/. I don't know how to fit them in, but I like them enough that I want to.

I want my setting to have distinct, memorable races. And I already have 9. Kobolds have a lot of stock in how they look and act, and are distinct that way, but if I create a great tall race of lizardmen, can the image of scaley kobolds fit in without seeming overburdened?
>>
>>48475928
Sure.

Just consider how they could be different. Kobolds are fairly draconic in nature, while the bigtall lizards could be more saurian.

Furthermore, think about how their societies could be different, and use that as a jumping off point to think about how they'd dress and act.
>>
>>48469727
And factory robots arent?

Remember its not about doing the job right its about doing it for much less than you.
>>
>>48475928
You could have the kobolds act as rats
Whereever there's people/other races, there's kobolds too. They modify in sewers in big cities and dig homes around other races (even in swamps, somehow)

They're social, love to play, don't share others' concept of personal space as they huddle together, but they're treated as vermin because they tend to take food. They see it as a test of the opposite sides traps/security system. If it's not well guarded by traps, then it's open to everyone
