can someone explain to me how the Redoran ended up being the dominant house, you would think that the devastating eruption and the chaos of an argonian invasion would be a perfect time for the Telvani to grab power, not to mention the fact that when it comes to fighting a bunch of lizards a powerful, ancient mages would be far more effective then a bunch of regular warriors

You know, shouldn't Dust Adepts be incredibly well suited for surviving on post-red year vvardenfell? The ashlands are more fertile and full of life than ever, what with pieces of the Heart sprinkled everywhere. That kind of magical mojo combined with significantly greater amounts of dust and ash across the island should make Dust Adepts powerful as fuck.
>>
Ok, so Dagon used to hide pieces of creation from Alduin to save them from being eaten right? But then how did a new kalpa start? I was under the impression that everything has to be eaten first before that happens, and where did he hide it some kinda pocket dimension? And most importantly what did he do with it when a new kalpa starts, just drop it off in the world somehow?

is he the reason the hist and dreugh are around? aren't they also from previous kalpas?

I don't mind it still spewing ash, some volcanoes are bullshit like that - though one wonders why that amount of ash hasn't just blocked out the sun over all of tamriel by now.

Honestly I try to ignore kalpic buggery for the most part. It gets a little silly. And one line from Paarthurnax aside lacks traction.
Plus I don't see the need to give each individual Daedric Prince his own special OC Donut Steel origin. Wasn't "the 15 + 1" a big deal in some Dwarven text way back when, because Malacath alone was different to the rest?

>>48319739
Yeah, I'm also dissapointed. I don't think Nords are supposed to be stupid, it's just how Bethesda shows them. What happened to shouting being common, snow whales, cool armor, Jhunal worship and mages like Shalidor?
>>
>>48319777
>shouting being common
way of the voice, basically nords got BTFO despite having thuum and decided that its the sign from the gods that thuum should only be used for worship
>snow whales

>cool armor
there is still some cool armor around, stahlrim has stats comparable to ebony and nordic engraved heavy armor is also extremely good
>Jhunal worship and mages like Shalidor?
this is the least explained part, I am not even sure about the timelines here, but for some reason the popularity of Julianos declined and then of course winterhold sank, mages were blamed and the popularity of magic and brains declined further

even in morowind nords were presented as idiots who are constantly caught by witches with their pants around their ankles, its a shame really, but all these factors contribute to me considering nords one of the shittiest races

I tried magic in Morrowind. Nobody told me that magic doesn't regen until I'd already gotten comfy.
What's the best of the games for a pure magic build? I inevitably end up having to hack at enemies anyway when my spells do fuck all and they close distance. Magic feels so inefficient even at higher levels to be worth betting the farm on.
>>
The key to magic in Morrowind is Alchemy!
>>
>>48320081
you have to abuse broken mechanics at first if you want to be a pure mage, steal the alchemy equipment in that one mage guild that has it unguarded, was it the caldera one? and then make some potions
>>
What do you guys think of this character concept for playing Morrowind -> Oblivion -> Skyrim

Name: Meles
Race: High Elf
Birthsign: Maybe atronach, not sure yet.
Class: Wizard.
This character is a vampire high elf wizard. He is a proud altmer. He travels through Tamriel in search of powerful magic and magicians to learn from or to challenge. In his quest for power he decided to prolong his already long life by becoming a vampire. He is self-serving and strives for power and knowledge. He lives rather secluded and doesn't favor town-life.

The idea is to play this character in all the games and that he as a vampire survives in between the games.

What do you guys think?
Any ideas to add on to this for extra role-play potential?
>>
>>48320196
It works but it's nothing special.
>>
>>48320196
If you're taking him to skyrim, maybe incorporate hermeus mora into the character from the start and keep yourself almost exclusive to him.
>>
>>48320196
Also finish morrowind on doing something really horrible that leaves you in prison.
>>
>>48320290
Good idea. Magnus and Akatosh (Auri-El) would already get a role with this character, but hermeus mora seems the perfect deity to be working with on the side.
>>
>>48320081
Yeah Morrowind was not very friendly to pure Mage builds. The best way was to either abuse Alchemy, which would break the game, or go full autism leveling up Destruction or Mysticism and using custom-crafted spells.

Mysticism could really break the game open for Mage characters and the only reason it wasn't abused much is because Alchemy overshadowed it, and everything else.

To answer the question though; Skyrim is actually pretty fun as a Mage once you get past the first two tiers of spells. Tossing out Fireballs and Chain Lightnings is way more fun than hack&slashing, or even worse, Archery.
>>
>>48320196
I don't know if you can do much while a vampire in Morrowind as people won't talk to you. It might even exclude you from doing the main quest (unless you know what to do) but if you finish the main quest first you can't become a vampire since you become immune to diseases.
>>
>>48320376
Forgot about that, hmm..
Maybe I'll ditch the vampire part then. Being a mage and altmer gives acces to an incredibly long lifespan already.
Or I'll add vampirism in Oblivion with some character progression.
>>
>>48320486

>>
Should I use OpenMW even if I intend on playing vanilla? For performance boost and such?
>>
>>48320486
Also, when in Skyrim, you'll probably want to become a werewolf and do the related quests you want to do before doing the Dawnguard DLC quest to get the special vampirism, as the the events that give you lycanthropy and DLC Vampirism will cure you of the other and you won't have many chances to switch between them.

At least in Oblivion it's simple.

Hope none of the Daedric Princes refuse your servitude or anything like that.

>>
>>48320752
Bretons are just kind of... misused. The natural resistance to Magic could have made for some great Anti-Mage fluff, instead they're like... halfbreed Cyrodils.

You have to play strategically, especially if you are doing pure mage. Open up with a summon to distract and cast at enemies, carry plenty of potions on you, and make sure to rest often and cast conservatively.

Once you learn how to play a mage, they become the best class to ply, even without exploits.

The importance of magic would be a very good reason FOR anti-mages.

Also, the cultural thing is actually fairly unfounded. From what we can gather, the skill bonuses for Bretons are innate, and not a cultural thing.

"Passionate and eccentric, poetic and flamboyant, intelligent and willful, the Bretons feel an inborn, instinctive bond with the mercurial forces of magic and the supernatural."

Bretons are also very famous for knights, adventurers, and paladins. That with a magicka resistance makes for a good anti-mage.

Also, there is nothing saying you can't be an Anti-mage who uses magic. In fact, in most games, anti mages use magic debuffs.

They're closer evolutionary. Just seems like a logical conclusion that and Aldmer, and therefor Altmer, are more like the Ehlnofey than Dunmer or Orismer. Even then, I'm speaking more from the Altmeri point of view of "WE WAZ GODS 'N SHEEIT".

I actually like Nords considering their very interesting past, especially the 1st Era Nords. Those kinds of Nords I respect most out of all races in TES. It's just Bethesda seem to want to throw in a token barbarian/viking race in it eventhough they put in the leftovers from their bygone days in Skyrim. That just made it even more painful to see how far they've fallen however. The Skaal though were very different yet showed a more spiritual side of the Nords that they've even had sone powerful magic practiced by them even if they are basically Amish Nords.
>>48319777
i don't remember the exact quote but i do remember Tsun warning the Nords about knowledge while they lived in Skyrim iirc. Seems Tsun had a bad stint with Jhunal at the time and his worship went out of fasion

Also, I try not to let personal preference detract from the validity of an argument, but Morrowind is better than Skyrim. I will give you something, and that's that Skyrim was a hair away from being as good as Morrowind and I do enjoy it greatly as one of my favorite games.

I also sort of respect House Hlaalu. I never got why people liked House Dres, though. I like crops and all, and I see how they're important for that reason, but Hlaalu does that, too, and Hlaalu handles trade and more covert operations as well.

mostly because Hlaalu are money first, anything else last. They're a businessman's faction but in a way that they're not very loyal to their own people, especially when they're practically puppets of the Empire. By the end of the Oblivion Crisis, they were left to their own devices despite the promised support from the Empire and got fucked up so hard, they were relegated to a minor House. Sure they helped trading come to Morrowind, boosting it but not without being shady as fuck while they're at it.

Traditional Cyrodiliic and Nordic mythologies claim that men were created by the Divines. But then again The Monomyth and The Annuad are both in-print in-game so I guess belief depends on the individual.

Who turned washington state in Fallout 3 into a barren wasteland to crudely ape 1 and 2 and brought in the Enclave, a Faction explicitly destroyed in the second game because they wanted to be 'iconic.'

In their writer's bullpen there's no one who says 'wait we did shit that contradicts this. We should at least think this out.'

why the fuck do you think a significant portion of TES's metaphysics are built around justifying plotholes so large Numdidium could build a summer cabin in?

The big problem is that they allegedly did it in a week's work. If that's what they can do with 7 days, then what the fuck were they doing during the years it took to develop Skyrim that all of that and more wasn't present at launch? The video itself points this out at the end.
>>

are we on 6 or 7 at this point? I can't be fucked to remember. There was a lot of talk about Hammerfell in skyrim so my bet is on them ruining Pankratoswording next.

I'm sort of left wondering what the fuck even happened in development. Once you add in a script extender a lot of interesting magical shit is possible but shouts were.... lackluster.

I mean I KNOW they gutted the magic system so shouts weren't shit tier. But you encounter bits and pieces that imply the game could be interesting. A spell that turns iron to silver and silver to gold. (and is fucking tedious to use if you want to collect some fucking silver) That moon based weaponry...shit that seems to imply some forethought went into the magic system.

You bet.
Bridwell was the commander of the Knights of the Dragon, making him the protector of the royal family and the city of Daggerfall. When the War of Betony broke out, he was the general of Daggerfall's army, making him the greatest hero of the war.
Even if you read the impartial or Redguard accounts of the war, there's no mention of him ever losing a significant battle.

>Battle of the Bluffs
Sea battle near Daggerfall. The Scenarist Guild says the victory was due to Bridwell's leadership.

>Battle of the Glenpoint Foothills
The Sentinel forces try to invade Daggerfall through Glenpoint, but are repelled by Daggerfall's military.

>Siege of Craghold
Craghold is under siege by Sentinel forces, but Bridwell sails out and breaks the siege. Spawns a one of the jokes found in Daggerfall.

>Slaughter in Reich Gradkeep
A priest from Sentinel tries to force the warring kings to sign a doctored treaty, Bridwell destroys the fake treaty. And the writing table. With a battleaxe.
A bloodbath breaks out inside the castle, royal bodyguarda attacking each other and the hosting nobility being murdered. Bridwell still manages to get himself and the royal family out unharmed.

>Battle of Cryngaine Field
Final and most important battle of the war. While King Gothryd gets a lot of fame for this, it's Bridwell that actually slays King Camoran of Sentinel, causing the Sentinelians to rout. The Redguard general surrenders, and commits suicide on the way home

Also his wife is a qt

In a week, they managed to make base animations, and take footage of it working. What you don't see are all the bugs, and all the time spent making the foundation of the game. I don't want to sound like a shill, but making videogames is a bit harder than you think it is.

They're paid to gut the character progression system and make leveling up the least satisfying experience you could possibly have in favor of making it pretty?

Christ what was even up with the map in that game? It created this weird fucking meta situation. For awhile in history cartographers were fucking useless, they could make pretty maps. But useful maps? Well best hope you have a native guide who knows his way around.

Daggerfall has tons of great lore. It just gets overlooked more than it deserves.
A lot of the lore is also rather in-depth about the situation around the game and certain events that happen there. If you take all the differing accounts and disagreement over what actually happened, The War of Betony was Red Mountain before Red Mountain. Just with less metaphysics and more politics and backstabbery.

As for the game itself, I'd definitely recommend giving it a spin. It's very understandable if people don't like it, it's for many valid reasons, but it's very much worth trying.

I'm tired as fuck an not up for writing up something new now, but I could repost something I wrote on the disaster at Reich Gradkeep.

I mean say what you want for Oblivion but there were actual improvements there, losing levitation was a step backward but magic was improved. (honestly it's a fucking hassle swapping between magic and weaponry in morrowind.)

>>
>>48326453
You can excuse the degradation in leveling systems when comparing the complexity of Morrowind and Oblivion's leveling system and builds as trying to create a more solid adventure game. (Redguard wasn't exactly perfect but it presented some interesting lore. Pity it didn't do better.)

But the map system, you know a basic navigation tool, is barely functional. The local map is decent enough until you get involved in multi level dungeons, the world map is pretty but useless for navigation.

I'm not even getting into how poorly the civil war was implemented there's game systems in there that just don't do what they're supposed to.

This came up back in April, when we were talking about who got involved in the War of Betony.
Here's the tragedy of Reich Gradkeep:

So, for reasons I don't need to touch on, Daggerfall and Sentinel go to war over Betony, and regional power. Despite being "limited" to only the two, it's still a war between the two most powerful entities in the region, and things get brutal. There's sea battles off the coast of Daggerfall, and a Sentinelian invasion of High Rock is smashed in the foothills of Glenpoint (who likely joined Daggerfall). As a sidenote, there were Dunmeri mercenaries fighting for Daggerfall. Daggerfall and Sentinel are the big boys of the bay, and if they have to march armies through neutral land to invade their enemy, they will.

Now, after two years of fighting and all kinds of pressure from inside and outside the kingdoms, King Lysandus of Daggerfall and King Camaron of Sentinel agree to meet for treaty negotiations. But when the kings arrive, they're not just royal delegations, they arrive with their armies behind them. What followed is the Treaty of Reich Gradkeep.
It's sort of hard to say exactly what happened that day in Reich Gradkeep, but I'll give you three accounts, and conclude with saying what de definitely know.

King Gothryd.jpg

>>48326565
According to the Scenarist Guild, it was Lysandus who got second thoughts about the war, and he arranges to meet Camaron at Reich Gradkeep, under the hospitality of the neutral Lord Graddock. The negotiations are civil, and the kings agree to joint control over Betony. But a member of the Daggerfall delegation called Vanech, a priest of Kynareth, considers Betony to be sacred to Daggerfall's patron goddess, and this treaty blasphemous. So he intercepts the Sentinelian proposal to Daggerfall, and exchanges it with a fake designed to offend Lysandus. The delegation from Daggerfall is outraged, and Lord Bridwell supposedly draws his battleaxe to shatter the treaty as well as the writing table. Camaron discovers Vanech's trickery, and outright slays him. So, one delegation has destroyed the treaty, and another has committed murder. Total mayhem breaks out, and the armies are called in to fight the other, in the city and castle of Reich Gradkeep. The battle is a bloodbath, and Lord Graddock is killed with his entire family, and the whole thing is followed by chaos and uncontrolled looting. When order is regained, both armies pull away from the sacked city to make camp.
>>
Skyrim was the first Bethesda RPG that was playable and not utterly broken. Unfortunately they achieved that by stripping away all RPG elements and customization. At least it wasn't tiny, slow, clunky, boring and infested with cliff racers like Morrowind.
>>
>>48326504
No.

Skyrim is nowhere near morrowind on any level. Particularly the magic. Can you jump halfway across the continent and then use a slowfall spell to keep from dying on impact? Can you levitate into the air and fly to your destination? Can you make a spell that weakens an enemy to fire while damaging him with fire or summon a small party of scamps to overwhelm an enemy?

The melee gameplay was decent enough but Oblivion had that down before Skyrim was even in development. Oblivion's magic system wasn't as robust as Morrowinds (and that mage quest line was awful for multiple reasons, not the least being that it cut you off from spell making and enhantment) but Skyrim's magic system is barren. I have never felt less satisfied playing a mage in any game period and that's an unforgivable sin in a fantasy game. (that isn't focused on being low magic fantasy anyways.)

Also I felt kinda gipped on shouts being, you know, rare. These are nords. I read about necklaces of enemy tongues and beards with magic woven into them.

What we got was really dissapointing in light of that.

>>48326584
According to Vulper Newgate, the treaty is entirely the work of Lysandus, and Lord Graddock is just a facilitator for the negotiations. Everything starts out civil, but when Camaron realizes that Lysandus' treaty means that they'll have to share Batony, he flies into a violent rage and orders his army to sack the city. Daggerfall intervenes to drive off the looting Redguards, and eventually chase them out of the city and all the way to the Ravennian Forest.

According to Fav'te, it was Lord Graddock who persuaded the monarchs to meet, and to sign a treaty. Talks go well, and Camaron is generous enough to give up some rights over Betony to Daggerfall. He felt that he had to, as Lysandus was a rabid madman, too dangerous to be given an excuse to go to war. But as Camaron is about to sign the treaty, he realizes that Lysandus has miswritten parts of the treaty to surrender even more power to the treacherous Bretons. The situation within the castle turns into a brawl, spreading to the armies outside. The battle is a massacre, and afterwards the armies move to new camps to get away from the city.

Socucius Ergalla is not only level 14, but has about 54 Acrobatics, Sneak, and Light Armor, carries a Steel Shardblade, and knows only one spell: Crying Eye.

He can dunk on the majority of people, fight with the proper armor on, is adept at stealthy combat, always carries on him a dagger that freezes people, and can make them cry by wiggling his fingers.

Odds are, nobody in this thread will ever be as badass as an old consensus taker.

What we do know, is that Lord Graddock (either as a pawn or a player) gets himself and his realm involved in trying to broker a peace. While we can disagree over what happened in the castle that day, it most certainly turned into a bloodbath, later becoming a battle proper. The Graddock family is slaughtered, and the city is devastated. In desperation, the remaining court at Reich Gradkeep turns to Lord Auberon Flyte, a cousin of the late Lord Graddock. Lord and Lady Flyte take power, and prove to rule as effective and nearly dictatorial strongmen, quickly hauling Reich Gradkeep back on its feet. The people are immensely thankful, and loyal to the new ruling family. As a token of their loyalty, the Knights of the Flame are founded to protect the Flytes, and they rename Reich Gradkeep after Lord Flyte's ancient ancestral home.
They call it Anticlere.

One week after the treaty wasn't signed, the war ends at Cryngaine Field, and both King Lysandus and King Cameron are dead.

And that's what happened when Lord Graddock decided it probably was a good idea to host treaty negotiations.

There are people out there claiming that Vivec didn't achieve CHIM before his experience with Heart of Lorkhan, or even before his meeting with Tiber Septim.

Almost every draugr shouts at you. Most Nords probably did know shouts, but with the Way of the Voice keeping outsiders from learning, it probably died out.
>>
>>48326679
CHIM is understanding that you're in the dream and you can manipulate it. You're a lucid dreamer. More importantly it's the capacity to seperate yourself from the dream and transcend the illusion that is your reality.

Vivec canonically never achieved CHIM, all his feats were performed with power stolen from the heart of Lorhkan. Which is stolen DIVINITY. His feats were divine but without the heart to recharge them at the end of the day he was nothing more than a mage toying with power he didn't understand. Or even want to understand really.

Sotha Sil came to understand his own mortality and the pointlessness of playing at being god, which is why he didn't fight almalexia when she came to murder him.

Almalexia, having been worshiped for centuries refused to accept her own mortality and lashed out at everything around her, seeking any way possible to maintain her own false godhood.

Vivec, faced with the fact that he could no longer play god accepted it and let events play out, even if those events meant being killed by the nerravarine. (he didn't exactly stand there and let it happen, but he knew it was one possible outcome.)
>>
>>48326818
did you encounter any Draugr that did more than Disarm you or Hit you with a shockwave? I didn't, maybe I didn't raid enough tombs.

Again this is a story decision, they didn't have to make the way of the voice die out but they chose to, and more than a few writers make decisions with gameplay limitations in mind.

Shouts were really lack luster, visually, audibly, and most importantly in effects. This wasn't helped by it being so damn tedious to learn them.

Nevermind the game actually making dragon slaying boring.

You really are going to say it's shit because of the magic system being underpowered?

What made Morrowind great wasn't the ability to levitate or being an unstoppable wizard Although that is one of my favorite parts., it was the world around you.

In Morrowind, there were interesting things, conflicts, morals, themes, injustice. In Oblivion, all we got was "The emperor's dead, and necromancy is bad". Seriously, the only questline that was remotely interesting was TG towards the end, and Whodunnit.

Skyrim is a step in the right direction. There's an air of political instability you don't see in Oblivion despite Uriel being dead as a door nail since everybody is apparently fine with that and not even concerned about Daedra poring in from Oblivion.

Everything has more backstory, from the once prosperous town of Winterhold which now lies in ruins to a mysterious storm, to the betrayal of Torygg, to the ambiguity between the Stormcloaks and Imperials which shows how there's more than one side to each story, the corruption of The Blades, The injustice of Riften, the now failing TG and DB, there's so much more character in Skyrim.

Go ahead and sputter "Muh spears", but I'll have you know that gameplay is definitely not what made Morrowind good. In fact it's normally the exact opposite. Yeah, I don't like that Mysticism is gone or how underpowered magic is, but Skyrim has much more worldbuilding than Oblivion.

>>48326889
Nah, not really feeling it. The best worldbuilding you saw in Skyrim was the dragonborn expansion, with an honorable mention to the Soul Cairn and what it means for TES at large, Skyrim is flat. It's a puddle. There's 'political conflict' that you don't really get involved with. There's a couple half ass battles and then Viking Stormniggers or Imperial Pretenders take over and it doesn't change much. It feels like the story to a different game. Then you have alduin, and what's basically Valhalla where you go for reasons that are unclear at best. I mean yes Sovngarde had been a thing forever but it felt small and insignificant in skyrim, as did all the dragon fights.

The gameplay is puddle deep, once you've played the game for an hour you literally have everything it has to offer. The magic isn't underpowered its barely there. The combat isn't engaging, its barely polished.

Yeah Alduin's gonna eat the world but after I played for a few hours I didn't feel threatened by dragons. I have to slaughter them by the boatload to unlock shouts, which then feel fucking cheap because they're barely better than spells. The spells are barely worth learning.

There's more to a video game than just fighting things. The lore in skyrim is close to nonexistant, why fucking engage with anything at all. When I play a game I expect there to be some fucking depth to it, even if that depth is just playing fashionista with armor. (another thing you can't do with Skyrim unless you install mods)

Oblivion wasn't flat, the lack of Jungles was annoying and the environment was standard but I had enough magic to back up my typical abilities that I felt like I was participating in a TES adventure.

No, books, and voice overs, and characters muttering about prophecies and shit in other provinces do not strong worldbuilding make. Skyrim is underwhelming and unengaging, even in comparison to Oblivion's potatoface issues.

Do yourself a favour and experiment with the controls for a bit, and remap it into something sensible, and the game is actually pretty good when it comes to just movement.
It is dated, I can't say anything else, but it holds up surprisingly well for something that's twenty years old. Arena is just two years older, and that has aged much worse. There's a good reason people still play Daggerfall.

Try it out, see if you like it, and expect to make many mistakes.

How the fuck does Oblivion have more depth to you? How the hell are you playing a fashonista in Oblivion? How the hell is wearing the same Burgundy fur coat as all the counts depth, but Skyrim is flat?

And you think the lack of Jungles is what made Oblivion 2D? As if that would magically solve everything? How about if there was actual conflict in the setting and not just the story line, or even a base acknowledgement of Colovian culture vs. Nibenese?

And how the fuck are going on about how Books and dialogue aren't enough for world building when that's all Oblivion did? All the lore on the province that wasn't retconned was in book format, (Part1/2)

And all the lore on the other provinces was from robotic dialogue between discussing how vial mudcrabs are. This is even joked about in the community.

Just tell me how deep Oblivion is and how? From where? What makes it deep other than you feeling like you are on an adventure? Prove to me you aren't just spouting /v/ memes. I want a serious answer that isn't just "But Skyrim was worse because I don't like it".

The Father of the Niben clearly documents Topal the Pilot's encounter with ancient Khajiit along the River Malapi, making not only Leyawiin and the Trans-Niben, but the entire river up to the bay, rightful Khajiit territory.
