Like... I guess if your GM is an idiot who thinks hit-point damage is the only damage you'll ever take. I'm playing a character in a game right now who was trained to be a healer/alchemist and I've used the medicine skill to do everything from set broken bones, to identify the symptoms of someone under the effect of magical poisons.

Personally I always let my players, if they have medicine trained, expend uses from a healers kit to heal for half their rank in the skill out of combat (so 10hp if they have skill trained to 20). Makes alot more sense than carrying around a bunch of wands of healing, and allows characters who can't use magic items to heal as well.
