I have a shitton of the old style Lizardmen (that used to come in the starter box). They're really boring and all look the same.
Pic is what they all look like.

Anyone have any ideas of how I could give them some variety? Some ideas for using green stuff or maybe even affordable bits I could order?

Heavy trooper, Storm Trooper, and mono pose marine from black reach.

The problem with Storm troopers, is that 40k guns are way to huge for them. Heavy are too bulky for SoBs but easier to use 40k bits and guns (reason I'm using those)
Storm come with weapons, but look very tinny, the heavy come with heavier looking guns, that work on storm troopers.

Now I have 20 Heavy Troopers, that Vallejo white primer fuck me over.
10 Storm Trooper that will be "count as" for priest, and simulacras.

I was thinking of getting the Grishnak Battle Sisters when they come out, with RH Icariates as Seraphim and DF Valkir as Celestians (using the /tg/ fandex that makes them baby Terminators). I'm just worried that they won't look cohesive enough, even if I use the same heads across the army.

Would sculpting on sleeves help circumvent that? It could add more bulk and allow for some creative repositioning.

Not too bad. Got to work on those mould lines and drill your barrels though.

Hey, /wip/ I'm going to hobby lobby Monday, and was wondering what useful things I could get from there?

I'm 99% sure they'll have a drill bit small enough to drill barrels and to make holes to pin with, unsure if they'll have any sort of wires to pin with, and unsure if they'll have any "Good" brushes to use, not the $5 cheap packs.

Also, what paints should I use for a mud base and rocks? I know Stirland Mud for the texture paint, but I don't know what else. I'm going to be using small clipped off pieces of sprue as rocks on my bases and was thinking of using Celestra Grey with maybe Ulthuan grey or Pallid Wych Flesh as a small layer over them? Unsure really. I've also heard that drybrushing the Stirland Mud with Terminatus Stone is good, but I don't know about that either.

I'm tempted to get the new heroes pack but I'll never take a captain equipped like him.
Just the fact he's so uncustomizable is a big turn off, especially when you're paying so much for him.

Also, anyone know if I can attach a standard jump pack to the chaplain like normal? Footslogging chappies are useless to me and everyone else.
>>
>>48204460
Sadly no, the left shoulder is locked in place and the gun is fused with the torso front, so it's really a lot of cutting for a small payoff.
Maybe you can shave off the gun and put in a left hand bolt pistol with the barrel pointing into the air, then do a simple head/arm swap after that.

So I got some Vallejo air paint and the stuff is amazing, it just seems very easy to work with.

Can someone inform me what the difference is between the model, game and air paints in the range?

If there is no difference, i'm not gonna buy another citadel paint again.
>>
>>48205479
model and game are about the same
there is model air too btw

air is pre-thinned (intended for airbrush as the name suggests) thats the difference.

model colors are more "realistic" colors for military kits mostly. greens, browns etc.

Please excuse the sub-par photos, I really can't into skills right now. But here's my Cadre Fireblade WIP. Since he's an infantry leader with a bulkier chestplate, I stuck a spare CSM torso front to a Necron Praetorian backpack with the bulbs removed. Details filed down and voila, a barrel-chestpiece with gorget and big cowboy beltbuckle to paint the Fire Caste symbol on. Then stuck an antenna on the back so the orb acts like a communications device.

Milliput work is not finished yet, not happy with how the chest looks.
>>
>>48205515
Is there any reason against using the air stuff just for normal brush work? surely it being prethinned is a good thing?
>>
>>48205538
relatively speaking it's a little more expensive (as it is pre-thinned, rather than you adding your own thinner), but other than that there are no significant downsides to using VMA over VMC or VGC.

For certain applications I can see VMA having a few downsides (drybrushing is trickier as the paint is so much thinner), and you'll have more control by thinning it yourself.

Other than that they are all good paints.

>Templates can hit a lot of models, Wall of Death when getting charged, and roasting people in Open Top transports I guess.

I was just thinking that since the LotD automatically ignore cover when shooting that it might be beneficial to give them weapons that take advantage of that such as a graviton gun, plasma gun, or missile launcher - the kind of weapon that might already deny you an armour save. Now, with "Flaming Projectiles", you couldn't take a cover save, either!
>>
>>48207295
Well, apart from the Sergeant taking a combi-grav, LotD can't take grav guns/cannons. But you're right about S7 Ap2 Ignores cover being pretty good against a lot of things.

So you can take a Heavy Flamer+Flamer+Combi-flamer, and abuse the fact of a Deep Striking Heavy Flamer, or abuse the slow and purposeful with Plasma Gun+Plasma Cannon+ Combi Plas or other weapon combos. Whatever you want really.

since chaplains wear skull masks, it would be cool to make a chaplain version of sir daniel fortesque. sculpt his normal skull head, shape his power armor to be like his knight armor a bit, maybe make the handle of his sword have a crozius shape to count-as his crozius arcanum, slap on a backpack and you're good to go.

Excellent painting. My only suggestion would be to use less blue. You're using it for cloth, soft armor, and eye lenses. The eyes would be the easiest to change if you felt inclined.

do you play a game already? do you intent to buy an army? or do you just want to paint for the sake of painting?

Damn I really love these new base packs.
>>
>>48209358
I mostly play 40k so I'll use 40k as an example

>decide what army you like, do a little reading about how you should equip them before assembling some retarded squad with mismatched weapons that aren't even legal. don't worry about it too much tho, the important thing is to play what you like (within the rules of course). try asking around on 40k generals.
>buy 2 troops and an HQ
>DON'T BUY ANY MORE MODELS UNTIL YOU'RE DONE PAINTING THESE. SERIOUSLY THERE ARE NERDS ACROSS THE WORLD WITH WORKBENCHES FULL OF UNFINISHED MODELS, IT'S A DISEASE
>stuff you'll need: primer (vital, you need to prime a model or the paint won't stick on), one base brush, one detail brush, a file (please remove moldlines), 3 main colors of paint that your army will be, a couple washes/technical paints, and something to base your models with. also you need either super or plastic glue to assemble to models themselves. you could just put elmer's glue on the bases, cover them in sand you found outside, and paint the sand
>watch youtube tutorials that are for your models or close enough to what you want, games workshop has some pretty good tutorials for beginners on youtube
>you'll need a bowl of water for cleaning off your brush, and a palette of some sort. consider a wet palette. USE THE WATER TO THIN. YOUR. PAINTS.

Once you get some experience on the basics, you can go as far into painting as you desire. Converting up your own unique dudes is a great part of the hobby and over the years you may end up with hobby saws, greenstuff, sculpting tools, an airbrush, etc. but for now this should be a good start and is perfectly fine for any army if you don't want to go further. A hobby drill ($7 on ebay) may be needed to drill the barrels of guns, and is needed for pinning. Pinning will save you lots of hassle.

I feel like I'm forgetting some essential materials needed so maybe somebody will help me out here, I'm tired.

Not quite sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'm looking to paint a mask (It's a bug head for a LARP) so that the surface looks like pic related. How would I:

Simulate that sort of dotted texture?

Do that sort of uneven painting of brown, where there's random bits of black it the brown parts?

Paint that graduation between brown and black?

Or is this too complex for a beginner to tackle?
>>

If it's a mask that doesn't move check out your local artstore and hve a look at the medium section.
After you primed the maske you can use a medium to apply a texture (of course if you have the right size you can use sand in your paint too) then paint the whole thing the way you want it.
Say you mix some sand in a brown paint then take a black spray can add the gradients and the varnish the whole thing in gloss varnish.

Stippling paint or using a sponge for application will give you a similar texture, but since that is just paint it might not hold up as well to wear and tear you'd expect a mask to go through.

take 2 shades of the same colour or harmonious colours (e.g dark green and light green or green and yellow)
start with the darkest colour, thin it alot with CLEAN water and apply it to the largest area, use multiple layers if required but shouldnt be
add more of your lighter shade in as you go, reducing the area you apply the thin coat over
use a mixture thats mostly the lighter shade to highlight the edges as you see fit like in my picture on the rune and blade-guard
a wash can be applied to 'blend' the colours together

Looking oood! I was thinking about something like this earlier today.

If the Eldar can take Windrider Squads as Troops choices, make them objective secured, and then issue scatter lasers/shuriken cannons to every man-jack of them... why can't Space Marines takes squads of ten Space Marines heavy bolters, jump packs, and stabilizers (suspensors?) that grant the "Relentless" special rule as Troops choices for only +13 points per model.

Seems like it would be a fair all around.

I would look into the Krylon Primer+Paint Metallic line. I use their silver as a base for my Thousand Sons before washes of blue.
In fact, the silver followed by washes of Gryphonne Sepia is also what I use for my Gold and it has a lot of depth this way. I am not sure how Agrax looks, but Army Painter's brown wash is supposed to be GW's old Gryphonne Sepia.

>what counts as pro-mode basing?

More interesting bases use textured paint or medium, sand of various grit, chunks of slate, gravel, or cork, and different methods of attaching static grass. Then you have resin designs with various kinds of terrain (factory floors, spaceship hulls, ruined temples, etc.), volcanic bases that look like they have lava in between the cracks, and some with clear plastic or resin that look like water/slime/swamp.

There's almost as much to basing as there is to painting models. I've moved up a step from flock (painted sand plus static grass - pic related), but I really need to concentrate on making the models look nicer - and painting more of them!
>>
>>48218816
So what you're saying is, buy some aquarium sand, glue it on, sculpt with texture paint, and apply bits of grass. That's doable.

Now can I get your two cents on the mini?

>So what you're saying is, buy some aquarium sand, glue it on, sculpt with texture paint, and apply bits of grass. That's doable.

Sand has a long and storied history in Warhammer 40,000, having rose to prominence during the Second Edition era when *everything* had bright red paint on it somewhere and all models - regardless of faction - were mounted on sand-covered slottabases painted Goblin Green (pic related). There are many and varied ways to get cheap sand that has differently-sized grains in the same package. One fellow here in WIP was using sand from a beach in Cuba - which I assume he scooped up with his hands for free!

Texture paint - if yer willin' ta pay GW's prices or experiment with crackle medium used by artsy folks - is a science unto itself. Martian Ironearth, if done properly, actually looks like the pictures of the Martian surface sent back by our rovers!

Static grass can be applied sloppily, like I did in >>48218816. It looks OK when the model's down there on the tabletop, but up close, doesn't look much better than flock. You can also buy pre-made "tufts" of static grass that look like... well, tufts of grass. Additionally, there are expensive machines that deposit static grass in an orderly fashion and make the fibers stand up using an electric current. Micro-Mark sells one such machine that is a favourite with model railroaders.

>Now can I get your two cents on the mini?

What scale is >>48215085? Is he for Frostgrave? There are a lot of fantasy miniatures out there, and I my knowledge is primarily concerns Space Marines.

I like the armour, the flesh, and the hair, but I'm not sure what's going on with the sword (can't really see it well enough in the photo), the banner, or the shield. The back of yer lad's robes could really do with some highlights on the raised areas.
>>
on the topic of scenic bases, the lazy mans option is you can go to hobbystores and buy a shitton of different types of resin scultped detail bases. this can, however, get expensive for horde armies, but theyre nice for single models. pictured here for the krieg team

You got yourself quite a nice "cartoonish" effect going on. Working on stark contrasts rather than subtle blends. And you have done a good job with it as well. But as other anons have already pointed out, you really need to work on the face. What kills it for me is the darkness around the eyes, its TO dark , and it looks as if he has a unibrow, don't paint brows at all is my tip.
Also, Id suggest to paint the slot in the scabbard, and do some more extreme highlights on the cloak.

Well theres no secret on who the majority of fans are of the series.
After returning from E3 with a bundle of awards in their pocket (some being, editors choice, best strategy, best of E3 and so forth), they get greeted with the bitter fans of Warhammer 40k.
And you can see this quite well on channels such as YouTube as well, "ordinary" videogame players comments tend to lean like "Oh, looks awesome!" "Cant wait to play this" and so on. But ever so often, the neckbeards from years of hatred on all things new from GW comes along to leave their stamp.

Its like the hipster of wargames transfer to videogames as well. "I cant like this, its to new" Just as a great many people in the miniature scene reacts on new releases "They don't make models like they used to do!", trying so very hard to play only retro models.

Personally I think it looks good. I don't mind the cartoonish look, but then again, I never had a problem with WoW or Warcraft/Starcraft. I like it that they are bringing back base-work from DoW 1, while at the same time keep the Heroes from DoW 2, these are the two aspects I really was hoping for.
And I accept the fact that this is a video game, and that DoW has always been groundbreaking in terms of fluff. So I don't really see a problem with jumping terminators, or Knights dropping from orbit, as long as it looks cool and fills a role in the game.
What I dislike though, is the fact that SEGA is in on this. And we have seen how they release stuff before. Within the first month we will have 20+ "new skins" to purchase for £1 or so. We will have "exclusive" teams released as part of a pre-order, we will see shit that obviously was already done for the finished game, but sold separately to earn more money (wargear, teams and so on)..

That depends on the tank kit.
Your tank has "open" track sections where each part of the track is reachable by a brush.
Other tanks like pic related have parts of the track hidden/under parts of the hull and it would look like shit if you assemble it completely before painting the upper section of the tracks.

Either

To me the legs seem odd. Not because they're badly painted, but because the colors in the torso stop completely at the hip on the right leg from this angle, and almost at the hip on the left leg. I think it would look better if the torso colors continued just a bit further down into the upper thighs to make all the limbs like they're part of the same creature. Drama much?
You should be taking breaks anyway.

Yah, when I don't use it I miss the mold lines.

Pass the sharpie over the mold lines, where the two pieces of the mold should meet. The lines will stick out like a sore black cyst.
Remove the thick lines, repeat till no longer the black lines show up.

Green, because it makes a nice contrast against metal and plastic.

I found out where Duncan has been. Aside from the Sylvaneth videos, he just uploaded a ton of 30k painting tutorials on Warhammer TV. Best day ever.
