As a player, he would just argue about alignments the entire session and that his character's obviously evil acts aren't actually evil and it's the alignment system that's broken and inaccurate. He would also berate the players of actual good-aligned characters for their selfless acts and how they take away the accomplishment of overcoming hardship from the people they're helping.

As a player in a system without alignments, his character would perform all sorts of shady acts and justify it as ruthless pragmatism, or say that his character is a superior ubermensch and deserves more than the rest of the feeble masses or some shit.

As a DM he would present plots with ham-fisted clumsy symbolism and force us into scenarios of questionable ethics and morality, and try to "teach us a lesson" about how heroism is dumb and goodness doesn't exist, and probably call us moralfags when we get mad at him for his crappy no-win plot where the villain turned out to be good all along.

Nothing but whores and moral ambiguity and unnecessary violence, while "reinterpreting" beloved NPCs and completely missing the point of what made them good. Also a heavy dose of strawmanning and forcing real-world politics into an inappropriate setting.

These are the ones I have trouble with. She is OK, until she decides to RP. And then it is just painful as fuck to listen to. Real cringe territory for me.

Everyone else is fine for the most part. But when she decides to speak in character it is just drowning in 'look at me, I am special emotional Mary Sue'.

yeah I have no problem with her as a person whatsoever.
she's obviously passionate about the hobby and does charity work.
her RP is just overpoweringly annoying.
>>
>>48210687
My issue with her is that while other players manage to have moments of dialogue and interaction, those come off as drama.

When she roleplays, it comes off as her trying to "fake" drama, like someone who doesn't really understand what gravitas is.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pv0aljC1MjI

She seems to play emotionally inappropriate responses and an aversion to intimacy as her go to. Also drunk.

All valid points. But I see Liam pulling VERY similar shit, often misreading situations, and making them out as more dramatic/tragic than they are. Why does no one have a problem with him? Hell, even being an impartial devil's advocate I prefer his RP as well.
My belief is that this is because Marisha manages to be an SJW ingame, and super fucking selfrighteous a lot of the time, all while either misreading the situation, making her come off as trigger happy to jump to conclusions, or simply imposes a sense of 'justice' that is completely unviable in the world in which their characters preside.

>So you don't think her character is a problem? A whiney insecure whimp princess?

This is one of those times I'm not drawing a hard line between character and player in regards to how they RP. The biggest problem I see is that the player can't seem to figure out what RP is without DRAMA!!!1! I swear she may hyperventilate one of these days while on the show.
>>
>>48212449
Look, you aren't going to be able to argue me in to thinking Liam's character is well done. If I had to guess I would say that Liam was going through some bad times during character creation and this character is his expression of his inner twelve year old edgelord - your basic 'always sitting in a corner' combined with a 'I wanna be in love' character.

The guy i enjoyed the most was the guy that played the dragonborn. He was fun at least, and tended to be in character far more than the others (and his character tended to be something other than himself). But he was a tool one time too many, with some off table drama toolishness, and he is gone.

The viewers do not like her because her character is literally unbearable and the only one to even come close to calling her on it is based Percy.

Which is why i'm anticipating the 'Taliesin wants to make time for other projects so he's leaving' episode.
>>
>>48214107
Orion was great.
Though your story isn't really syncing up with the first hand information he gave as to why he left the show. Do you have any evidence to back up your claim that it was due to 'offtable drama toolishness'?
Others are also welcome to interject any sort of evidence if they have it on hand.

Wheaton has a tendency to get the rules wrong when he's doing a show about a game, and when called on it will make a massive, rambling wall of text blog post throwing his producer or interns under the bus for not giving him the right cliff notes because he's a busy guy and doesn't have time to learn games and it's not his fault.

Let me guess, you do know who Luis Scott-Vargas is, right?

Jesus fucking christ. How does somebody not know who Bowie is, was, will be. Fffffuuuuck.
>>
>>48215433
It's true. As far as I can tell, /pol/ does dislike /r9k/, on the whole - but it hates the root cause of /r9k/'s degeneracy more than the degenerates themselves.

And /r9k/ loves /pol/ because /r9k/ are some of the most disenfranchised people in the entire world, and /pol/ is full of people who aren't telling them they should be ashamed of themselves because of the way they were born.

So there's a bit of cross-contamination there.

Part of it was when Orion flipped out on a fan for making a shirt based on his character. Or how about when Mercer went on Reddit and posted (and since deleted) about a player cheating and not being welcome at the table right when Orion stopped appearing on the show. The reason it took him so long to say anything was because the group was trying to remain cordial and give Orion an out, but by the time any statement was made, it was plain to see that he was removed and not voluntarily left.

Yeah, there wasn't a whole lot of room to act Wesley Crusher into an interesting character. The only thing keeping him from meeting the literal definition of a gary stu is that he wasn't added in via fanfiction.

I could see how being involved in something like that could screw a kid up, though.

He's also been shown trying to metagame throughout the show (trying to get very specific anti-vampire stuff when he failed on his check to know what a vampire is truly weak to), gotten pretty drunk/loud on camera (they do a shift in seating where Taliesin goes between Marisha and Orion around the time they get back to Emon because he kept invading her personal space when the situation/scene didn't call for it), and was trying to make his character more important than he actually was (trying to call in a platoon of a foreign army to solve the vampire problem).

If you go back and look/think it over, you start to see just how cringy he was. And now he's tried to do his own thing with his character, but it's pretty bad from what I've heard/seen.

Keep in mind that they originally came over from Pathfinder, and Keyleth had a Charisma score of 6. She got a +2 from porting over to 5e, and her headband/circlet is something that gives another +2.

So if you keep that it mind it sort of makes sense that she's so cringe-worthy, and Marisha herself has said Keyleth is almost the exact opposite of her personality-wise.

Taliesin (the guy who plays Percy) sometimes metagames and tries to insert his character in certain situations that isn't called for, but he usually very quickly corrects himself. The character himself is played quite well (a guy immersed in self-loathing who invented/discovered guns and gunpowder and knows just how horrible his creation is and is trying hard to not let anyone else do the same).

Travis (the guy who plays Grog) originally just wanted to play a big, dumb, strong dude, but showed and evolved the character to prove that even big, dumb, meatheads can have important, roleplay moments.

Sam (who plays Scanlan) has probably grown the most on camera, going from comic relief into a pretty serious character while still maintaining his role of the "butt monkey" of the group.

I would fucking LOVE to game with Robin Williams.

I'd hate to game with Vin Diesel. He's a cool guy and I'm happy that he's such a strong advocate for fantasy media in general, every buddy cop script that gets scrapped for a dragon-and-princess adventure is a victory, but I feel like he's just built up too much persona to be a chill regular dude at a table. He'd be mildly intimidating, but worse than that he just isn't approachable - even when he's TRYING to be.

>>
>>48221486
Technically Grog is the best, but his self-imposed range limit of Big Dumb Barbarian cuts him off a lot. I think it's a really unfortunate choice because he's an intelligent well-spoken guy with a good head for tactics and better situational awareness than all the girls put together (they do try, yes even Marisha, but they are still girl-clumsy) and you can see him strain a little bit when he hits that "you're too stupid for this" wall. Everyone at the table is smart (even the girls) but he's probably the most D&D smart, playing the least D&D smart character, it's frustrating to watch.

Scanlan is probably the best at being a D&D character after Grog. He has a dynamic character that he doesn't overplay, and unlike Grog he can make full use of his abilities as a player, which makes him consistently entertaining and effective as a character.

Percy's really solid, but not standout. Vex is really standout, but she's shaky, she needs her bear or her brother or clear teammate-given objectives to shine.

Tiberius was always shit, I don't know why anyone ever liked him. Orion tries so fucking overhard it's not funny and his inability to match the group is agony.

Keyleth is Charisma 6, and like all Charisma 6 characters played accurately, it's a bad idea and grates after a while. Fans don't like her because she's deliberately being intolerable, not because she's a shit roleplayer. What she lacks is either awareness or interest of how she reads to an audience, she's there for the group and not the camera. Everybody else panders to the camera at least a little (this is correct to do).

Vax is comfortable in the metagame and pushes the edges of the group's style, which is not "cheating like a nigger," it's just belonging to a different tradition. He'd be right at home at many tables and his roleplay is fine, but he's not a great fit for Mercer's group.

Pike is "bad" but in the friend-who-loves-to-be-there-but-isn't-a-good-roleplayer way. It's forgivable.

WAS Charisma 6. Playing for 9 levels at Mercer's leveling speed at Charisma 6 probably locked it in for her. God knows no other player in the entirety of roleplaying history has been able to accurately model a +4 mental stat shift, so I don't think there's anything to pick on there.

Charisma 3 is either a tree that occasionally moves, but not in a cute Disney way that becomes endearing, or some kind of foaming goblin asshole.

It's Charisma 6. It's bad in any case, but I guess I'm unconvinced it's bad in any important sense - Critical Role is voyeurism much more than it is theater and I have a hard time faulting failure-to-entertain - so long as the group likes her, which they mostly do. Orion obviously too much, given the touching and the votekick and that they're not friends on social media any more; there are undoubtedly many reasons he was dropped but groping after the DM's girlfriend is deep retarded.
>>
>>48222446
>groping after the DM's girlfriend is deep retarded
By that logic, Taliesin's next. They're all over each other pretty regularly.

And i'm afraid I have to disagree with the 'nobody ever managed to pull off a stat shift of +/- 4' because that sounds like complete bullshit, you raging white knight.
>>
>>48222472
It's the EACH OTHER part that shields Taliesin. Maybe they're just great friends with good history, maybe that's just what Marisha tells Matt, but either way they're mutually happy together - Orion/Marisha became one-way real fucking fast. And as noted there were a lot of things contributing, I just think that was definitely one.

>And i'm afraid I have to disagree with the 'nobody ever managed to pull off a stat shift of +/- 4' because that sounds like complete bullshit, you raging white knight.

Don't be a cunt, you know it's true. You could have the goddamn lich-kings of the Globe Theatre for players and they still couldn't do +4. -4 is easy-peasy but no one at any table has ever done it the other way with success. No one even agrees on what those ratings look like (is Int 10 as smart as an average person today, as smart as an average peasant, or <variable fantasy comparison inserts here>? How much does +1 Int change your IQ? What roleplaying factors does Int even control, where does Int end and Wisdom begin, is eloquence a function of Intelligence or Charisma...) let alone what a +4 shift represents.

Irrelevant anyway, Marisha is a solid Cha 6, it's just that a solid Cha 6 is pretty close to unbearable over a much, much, much shorter timeline than Critical Role.
>>
>>48222446
Had a game where I got hit with some magical disease from Book of Vile Darkness that gave me a larger head and a +4 to my Int. as a half-hour rogue in 3.5 DnD, went from a wide-ranging, street smarts dude to the beginnings of Batman-esque shit (went from a 12 to a 16) and started to try and direct the party in battle as best I could.

Unfortunately the rest were so lolrandumb that they started splashing that magical disease around, hoping to get lucky on the RNG table and instead killed their characters.

I tried to avoid it as best I could, which I think karma rewarded me for by not killing my dude outright. Got a new hair color, gained a bit of AC thanks to natural armor, and grew a vestigial tail, but that was it.

Just... don't use Book of Vile Darkness stuff ever, it makes games very dark and gritty for no reason.
>>
>>48222472
The main thing with Marisha and Taliesin when they get touchy-feely is that it is implied to be Keyleth doing the touchy-feely moment with Percy, and they only do it for like 3 seconds at most to convey the emotion of the scene.

Keep in mind that most of the cast were theatre kids before becoming voice actors, and good theatre actors know when to draw the line between being touchy-feely for a scene and when it starts to invade on that person's personal space.

In-game I think Keyleth just thinks of Percy as a good friend and companion she can trust, even if they disagree on certain things.

Sam Riegel (playing Scanlan the gnome bard) is far and away the best RPer, even better than Travis(Grog).

Sometimes Travis oversteps his character's mental faculties, and he got a little embarrassing trying too hard during the Kevdak episode.

Sam is just 100% on-point at all times. He never does things that are out of character or metagaming, and he goes above and beyond with his improv singing. While other players are spending their time in town to buy potions and equipment, Scanlan goes nonmagical hat shopping or commissions a massive painting of himself.

Liam would be good if he had any self-awareness. He's complained multiple times about other players trying to perform "guitar solos" when he himself constantly scouts ahead of the party and goes on self-serving tangents.

True, but even if Travis played a smarter character, I don't think he could match Sam's roleplaying.
>>
I think one of the worst parts about Marisha is that her character has 22 wisdom and she plays it as 6.

He's basically the tumblriest man alive. Unbearable, on top of Dungeon World being a horribly inspired rip off. Acts like this RPG master but never even knows the rules of any of the games he runs or plays.

Difficult to tell, actually. If we go by some of his stuff, he might end up being a lolsorandumb That Guy, but he might equally end up being a top-tier, mostly mild comic relief player with some insanely good bits of emotionally touching serious RP.

He based Firefly on a Traveller game he played in when he was in college. Good writer, but a little TOO good: everyone was fast to adopt his quirks and so now he's a cliche. It's not really his fault, he's a victim of his own success.

And that's the politics, too. Radical feminist campus fascism is on the march. To some extent he's even become a target of it. Revolutions eat their own. I think if his mom hadn't been a political activist, and if he hadn't lost her so young, he'd have been much less self-consciously political. I don't know if that would have helped or hurt his career.

As a gamer, I've heard that he doesn't really like board games or RPGs with lots of heavy mechanics. But for his fun time he likes to do dramatic readings and other artsy stuff. So RPGs might be a little beneath him, so to speak.

>I don't know why anyone ever liked him
Orion played the low Wis character well.
>"Hello I'm Key--"
"Hello, I'm Tiberius Stormwind, how do you do?"

The problem, as others have said, is that he powergamed far too hard, often to the point where he ignored his low Wis and did smart things anyway. Like forcing that arrow into the trap mechanism.

Early into the show, he does come off as someone who is attempting to RP. When it was just him and Grog doing easily-noticed voices the whole time, he was very likeable. Once Scanlan and Percy started stepping up and his powergaming became apparent when the dice came out, then he slipped from favor.
>>
>>48222517
>Orion/Marisha became one-way real fucking fast
This is true, but Marisha would often drape an arm over Orion early on, which he clearly enjoyed.

I'm not entirely convinced that Marisha realizes that she's close to a solid 10/10. and if you'll take anecdotal evidence, I've known women like that. Not 10s, but solid 7 or 8s who had been raised in a small town, dressed like it was the 50s, and very simply did not realize they were beautiful because no one had ever actually told them, nor had they ever seriously dated anyone. That's what happens when you go to uni in Texas.

Orion was dumb for getting ideas, but Marisha is also guilty, even if she didn't realize.

>I don't really get why she is so hated
Objectivism is like monotheism. It exists, and so all other philosophy is false, or so the believer sees the world.

It's not even what Nietzsche argued, which was rooted in the Greeks who rooted much of their thinking in the "pre-spook" world, if you'll pardon the meme. Their reasoning is coming from the Book of Nature essentially, that was is in nature and how man exists naturally is a model for the world.

Objectivism takes parts of that, but refuses to allow alternatives.
>"hey we're doing to be airstriking these targets, which are unpleasantly close to civilian populations, isn't that a problem?"
To which the Objectivist responds
>"everyone is responsible for themselves, and those civilians are responsible for their own safety. If there are civilian casualties it's their fault."

I like to think of Vax and Percy as the blue oni red oni of the group. They both have that main character quality and now that they both have this raven thing going on it makes them even more parallel.

Although it does really feel like it was made for Percy and it sounded like Percy knew it. This became all the more difficult to watch since, at the time, one table in the party was getting all the loot while the other was only getting whatever scraps the other table didn't want, and they seemed aware of it. Then Vax slaps Percy, and although it was because he stumbled into a trap that got Vex killed, the whole magic item situation made me feel really bad for Taliesin. He tried to take something he knew was meant for him, in a time when he lost his main weapon and Vax/Vex were getting all the loot, and Vax/Vex took it from him and slapped him in the face.

It's rough being Percy.
>>
>>48250638
This. And then Liam has the nerve to complain about Taliesin performing a "guitar solo".
>>
>>48244817
>Orion played the low Wis character well.

Because he's a low WIS person. Just like Keyleth/Marisha. She's not "playing someone with low Charisma," she has genuinely poor social skills.
>>
Orion did some things well, and some things really well, but he also did a lot of things really poorly. In the end, he was dragging down the mood of the group, and it was to everyone's benefit that they split ways.

In a perfect world, he would have reformed himself and all that would be left were his good traits, and he could have stayed, but the problems were rooted too deeply to be reasonably resolved by a group of people who were already tired of his shit.

It's sad watching the carpet throwback video and seeing him playing happily with everyone else.

haven't watched critical role since like episode 20 or something like that, they were investigating a rakasha and orion was metagaming extremely hard (I think he cast a spell at it, mercer described how it didn't have any effect on the rakasha then orion remembered about the spell immunity and went something like "Oh I don't do that then i do this instead" despite it already having happened in game)

and I frankly was sick of that awkward shit were mercer silently glares at orion while everyone else in the party tries their best to ignore him trying to be the protagonist and trying to powergame while they're just having fun

so fuck orion. probably won't pick up critical role again because I can't be arsed and it sounds like it has more problems now than ever but I was looking forward to watching it without orion

his behavior during that beholder fight drove me nuts, if he had been at my table I would have kicked him out

At one point early on, Liam said to Orion that "you can't play a guitar solo every turn" because of how he took so long with his turns.

Fast forward to the scene where Percy visits the temple of the Raven Queen, and you'll see Liam pantomime performing a guitar solo when Taliesin isn't looking.

Sam seriously is the best at the table. Good handle on keeping meta out of the game, staying in character consistently, being enjoyable to watch, can pull of vulgar humor without it getting awkward, knows when and when not to use levity and when to not, and the fantastic character arc Scanlan has taken. Sam a best.

That just shows how little you understand Objectivism. Kind of weird, since Taliesin seems to hate being in the spotlight, he doesn't really do well with it. You can see him straining during the Briarwood arc and wanting to go back into the background even though he had to take charge.

And then after Travis had his arc with Kevdak and was relaxed/ready to go back to straightforward melee stuff, I think Taliesin made a comment like "yeah, that's how the spotlight feels when you're in it".

>Taliesin seems to hate being in the spotlight, he doesn't really do well with it
I sort of dislike that about him, I think.

He's one of the most reasonable, charming and willing-to-compromise in the whole group, but everyone else wants their moment in the sun and so they consistently push him to the back of the line.

And because he's non-confrontational, sweet and obliging OOC, he lets them. Even when it would make more sense to go along with what he suggests. When Vax mistreats him, because he's a self-hating goth he says he deserves it. When he and Marisha disagree when she's wrong, he doesn't press the issue and lets her keep feeling like she's in the right.

I can't help feeling things would be so much better if he just grew a damn spine and started to lead.
>>
