Gnome Tinker or a Ruby Dragon for sure.

I know Warcraft got a DnD3 ruleset, and it seems like Warcraft is the perfect fit for DnD (High fantasy, lots of themes like tech and magic and gods, lots of races etc) but has there ever been an effort to make the setting work in another system? Bonus points if not d20 based.

http://www.wowhead.com/news=250451/mage-order-hall-preview-and-artifact-transmog-recommendations

Basically, just a bunch of Mage class trainers and a quintessential wacky Goblin.

Which I guess isn't too surprising, since most of the notable Mage characters are pretty huge figures (Jaina and Khadgar) and/or dead. What I do find kinda weird, though, is that the Paladins get Lady Liadrin, but the Mages don't get Rommath.
>>
>>48192458
I think rogues have it worse, though. Other classes get some pretty cool class halls. Deathknights have their flying necropolis, druids get to chill in the Emerald Dream, demon hunters have a fucking looted Legion spaceship. Rogues get...That bar in the Dalaran sewers where I had my warlock's hearthstone set during WotLK (and where the hell am I going to put my warlock now that we're back in Dalaran and rogues took over the bar?).

>>48192554
>Rommath is pretty pro horde though, or blood elf at the least.
While true, Lady Liadrin is a big blood elf figure. But I suppose she isn't really the Big Three of the blood elves, which is why she's a class follower and Rommath isn't.
>>
>>48192616
>While true, Lady Liadrin is a big blood elf figure. But I suppose she isn't really the Big Three of the blood elves, which is why she's a class follower and Rommath isn't.
lady liadrin was largely a paladin figure as blood knight matriarch.
>>
So what's the reason blood elves have for sticking with the Horde? I haven't played since halfway through Cata.
>>
>>48192891
not too much of a reason. The purge of dalaran happened and a lot of the blood elves were arrested because a faction of blood elf mages had broken the neutrality of dalaran during the alliance horde war by actively stealing shit from dalaran and using it as a staging ground for horde operations.
It was jaina's finest hour.
>>
>>48192891
They're literal sluts and orcs, trolls, and tauren have the biggest dicks around. Also they're barbaric as fuck so they don't question why every female hunter has a wolf companion that spends the night in the same bed with them.

You've already answered your own question.
>>
>>48195972
I honestly forgot about that blurb.
It just made an awesome alliance moment taste bitter.
>>
>>48195765
I don't think blood elves having diplomatic relations with the Alliance in itself is dumb; they used to be members of the Alliance and they joined the Horde entirely as allies of convenience (most of the are near Silvermoon is either in the hands of the Scourge or the Horde, and the whole Garithos incident soured their relations with the humans, so allying with the Horde for mutual defence made sense), so some among them maintaining ties to their former allies and hoping to reconsile between the two factions, or switch sides if the situation would favor it, doesn't seem unlikely. Blizz consantly coming up with contrived reasons for Horde and Alliance to be at each others' throats while also fighting againt a more dangerous common enemy is much dumber.

I do agree that it's stupid that they introduce storylines or plot points they surely must know they can't give a satisfactory ending to. Siege of Orgrimmar is even worse example: they want to maintain a status quo between the two factions as roughly equal powers (which is probably why Alliance has suffered so many losses: back in vanilla lore Alliance had an absolutely massive advantage over Horde both population- and military-wise), so you know from the start that it can't end with anything more severe than the Alliance giving the Horde a stern talking to and everybody going back to fighting each other the next week as if nothing happened.
Which begs the question why they choose to do the stroyline in the first place. Surely, if you can't tell the story in a satisfactory manner due to game mechanics getting in the way, common sense would dictate that you just don't do that storyline?
>>
>>48196026
Blizzard made it worse by promising Alliance a good story for MoP, instead of the turgid lobotomized mess they gave us.

>>
>>48196546
No idea. Blizzard tends to write all the quests from a Stormwindian Human's perspective I've noticed. Much of the Horde quests are much more ambiguous.

The Aliiance is also protrayed as a Human-dominated empire with non-human member states. None of the diversity in NPC's or lore like the Horde is often written. All the NPCs in the Profession buildings in the Alliance Garrison are Humans. The Horde is more of an alliance than the alliance.

As someone that predominantly plays a human, that irritates the hell out of me. The Alliance consists of nations that include a 10,000-year-old empire of guerilla warriors and druids that can command entire forests to do their bidding, an industrial powerhouse, and a race of borderline demigods, and yet the humans are the only ones that get a focus.

I mean, Warcraft humans have shown to be pretty awesome because they've been able to stand-up to crazy odds due to their ability to adapt, produce some of the most powerful mages in history, and whatnot, but it's still a little silly. I find it a little poor to claim that the reason why the night elves or draenei don't take charge is because they don't really care much. At least the dwarves have the excuse of having a bunch of political infighting to prevent themselves from getting too involved (Moira for High Queen of the Alliance, just putting that out there).

But pushing lore aside, it's just boring that the Alliance is humans this, humans that, with the other races delegated to sidekicks. At least Warlords of Draenor gave the draenei a focus. Wish the night elves would get the same.

Would enjoy that quest again if you ever get the urge to run it again.

That being said, say you have the full history of Azeroth to play in, what's the best time period you'd want to run as adventures in? I'd like to see what the Time of the Ancients time period simply because you can see all of the old Titan shit that is laying around. Not to mention that all the mortal races are still immortal more or less.

One of my best WoW memories comes from Burning Crusade. I was in that tavern in the Lower City of Shattrath with two Forsaken (human mage player, myself) and we were watching the occasional comedian show that goes on there.

All three of us emoted along with the comedian's jokes and questions ("Anyone here ever been to Elwynn?" Cue /yes and /no's) and it was just kinda fun dancing around the language barrier. It wasn't even on an RP server.

Basically, after the death of the Lich King, the DKs were kind og left without a purpose: their primary motivation was to get revenge on the Lich King, and now that he's dead, what should the do? Made worse by the fact that DKs literally have to keep fighting or they go mad. When the Legion comes back (again), they decide that what they should now do is defend the world against demons and other bullshit the only way they know: going around killing any baddies they run into until either they or all the baddies are dead.
PC DK also gets promoted as the class leader because the old leader goes "fuck this paperwork and shit, I'm going to kill demons", hands you the keys to the giant floating necropolis, and flies off on the back of an undead dragon to beat the shit out of the Burning Legion by himself.

>>48196981
WoD had a lot of cool little moments like that. I also liked exarch Maladaar (a dungeon boss from TBC) appearing as a fairly prominent friendly NPC, and being able to recruit Onorok Torn-Heart (who in TBC was a former warlock who'se now retired on a small farm and very regretful of the atrocities he committed under Gul'dan) after he defects Gul'dan's forces.

Really, there was a lot of cool little ideas and callbacks in WoD, but the premise was pretty silly and, more importantly, much of the content got butchered by combination of too small initial developer team and them deciding to just wrap it up quickly and move to Legion when they finally got more devs.

Apparently new Combat is really cool, it's pirate/highwayman themed and has lots of gun-play. The big downside to it right now is an ability called Roll the Bones. There's one quest in Legion (or at least was in beta) where a blue dragon flatout states that dragons are all infertile now.

Seems Blizz wanted to get rid of anything Knaak had done (which Tbh is mostly a good idea), and give him a giant middle finger while at it, so not only did they depower the dragon aspects, but also ensured that all the dragonflighs are completely fucked and will go extinct (probably pretty soon for most of them, considering how often dragons get killed by random murderhobos).

I'm not sure what his goal as Lich King was other than just ruling the world and eliminating his rivals. Some theorize he baited the Alliance and Horde into coming to Northrend because he wanted some outside help in killing off his local enemies like Yogg Saron and the trolls.

I don't recall Arthas or the Scourge giving a fuck about the Burning legion in Wrath, even when Mal'ganis and Varimathras tried to pull some shit.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't aimed at legion specifically, just the remnants of the army he used when he conquered Sunwell in the 3rd war, with orders to kill everyone they run into.

I wish draenei and belves finally got updated starter zones. Not much to do with draenei (finaly cleaned up after Exodar's crash), but Legion is a great opportunity to show up some more demon invading, but I'd love to see how Quel'thalas looks with undead gone and trolls defeated (twice). >>
>>48207704
Updatng older zones (perhaps including Outland and Northrend... going from Cata/MoP timeline to TBC and WotLK is pretty stupid... first, Vol'jin is the warchief (except Garrosh is refered as the warchief in quest zones), then you find Garrosh in OL, see him being a dick in WoLK and then being a warchief in high level Cata and MoP zones) and perhaps adding few new ones ala Cataclysm would IMO be a better idea than what's currently planned for Legion (and Broken Isles being one large continent? wut?)

Yeah, half-elves were a more established thing before the RPG was declared non-canon, and then they kinda fell into ambiguity, at least in large numbers. But there is at least one known half-elf, which is the son of Turalyon and Alleria who sits around in Hellfire Peninsula angsting or whatever.
>>
>>48206384
I'm gonna be called a faggot, but I think it's fine. It clarified some things, made Lei Shen more awesome (too bad he's dead now, though), I don't mind the Void Lord or Burning Legion/Sargeras elaboration (and actually kinda like it). My only real issue from Chronicles is that ALL Titans (except Azeroth) were killed off-screen, which is very anti-climactic to me.

I'm kinda hopeful about Chronicles, because I feel like the reason why Blizzard made it was to more firmly establish a current canon to work off of for future expansions, instead of just constantly retconning, since it leaves some things open for the future. The writers have been saying things about how (as of WoD) they have the next three expansion stories or so planned pit, and I believe Chronicles is intended to play a part in that; both to hint at future storylines, as well as to something for them to work from.

The Forsaken with the Horde, especially with how the story has gone. Pretty much everyone in the Horde outright despises them for being assholes; pretty sure the other races have better relations than the Alliance at this point. At least the blood elves actually kinda like the Horde now.
>>
>>48209334
There's been all sorts of weird alliances in history, like the one between the French and the Ottomans simply because of their mutual dislike for certain neighbors one or both powers had.

>>48209501
>Blood Elves have been at war with: Orcs, Trolls, Undead, Demons.
>They are allied now with: Orcs, Trolls, Undead

The Blood Elves literally had no reason not to ally themself with Stormwind and the Dwarves, especially since they shouldn't feel any love for the Forsaken.

Altough I agree that noone has a reason to be allied with the Forsaken at this point, but largely due to the fact that they were more or less written to be the new Scourge.

>Vanilla:
West and East Plaguelands overrun with Scourge, Forsaken fight for their survival against the Crusade in Tirisfal

Opportunism, and not much more. They were caught between both the Alliance and the remnants of the Scourge, so they allied with the Horde to get some support, with the offer that they'd be a foothold for them in the Eastern Kingdoms.

Interesting. In handout for players in my Warcraft campaign (set about the same time as vanilla WoW), I've used this table to show relationship between playable factions

Coal. is trade coalition of goblins (and their mercenaries

SW is Azeroth Alliance, consisting of Stormwind, Ironforge and Gnomeregan

Ther. is stand-alone Theramore, allied with Alliance, but not a part of it

Wild. are Wildhammer Clan dwarves

Note that some relationships aren't mutual: for example, Thrall's Horde doesn't like Alliance, but thanks to Jaina's efforts, they don't consider themselves at war with them, but the Alliance is hostile to them, but doesn't have means to lead war against them on a different continent.

Forsaken are neutral towards Blood Elves (thanks to Sylvanas), but belves still don't trust them (they don't see much difference between Forsaken and Scourge)

Goblins would like to be neutral (and trade and sell informations and mercenaries) to everyone, but nelves and Wildhammer dwarves don't like them because they are not enviromental-friendly

Scourge, Twillight's Hammer, Burning Legion and other minor factions aren't included, because they aren't playable and are hostile to everyone.

daily reminder that wisps harvesting lumber is canon and not gameplay gimmick
daily reminder that after Mount Hyjal, all three factions were on friendly terms
daily reminder that the areas of the Barrens under Horde control have large amounts of gold and silver as well as extensive amounts of grazing land
daily reminder that there is therefore no realistic reason for the Warsong Clan to return to Ashenvale except as a contrived plot device to force the night elves into the Alliance

Because the distances are obviously much larger than in game, travel takes long time, so the world is basically divided into 3 main areas:

Lordaeron/Plaguelands, with Forsaken, Sin'dorei, Wildhammer Dwarves, Stromgarde and Kul Tiras(as a members of Alliance) being the main factions. Scourge, forest trolls, ogres, some surviving orcs, Scarlet Crusade and various bandits being the main survivors Gilneas is hidden behind a wall and having a civil war.

Azeroth has most of the Alliance and Wildhammer clan, with Defias Brotherhood, Dark Iron dwarves, trolls, ogres, Blackrock Horde and few Twillight's Hammer/Burning Legion cultists as main troublemakers.

Azeroth has Theramore, Horde and Kaldorei fighting with natives, Twillight's Hammer and remnants of the Burning Legion.

Goblins are trading with everyone everywhere, but mostly with Horde (who's the most friendly with them) and Sin'dorei (who depend on their mercenary nature and supplies to even survive)

This may surprise you even further then, Team 1 has fewer writers than Team 2 does. Story in SC has always been treated with a "who cares" attitude. This may sound really dumb but, I've always wondered why the Tauren and Night Elves aren't allied. They're both tree hugging hippies who love the environment.

The only reason I can think of is because the Taruen owe their lives to the orcs for saving them.

Actually as far as the storyline goes in WoW why are players tied to factions? Gameplay mechanics aside it seems like players should just be able to be freelance adventurers; The plot seems to have both factions working together to stop an unspeakable evil so many times they may as well not be at war.

Which is a shame. I like Outland, and TBC is probably my favorite expansion. I had my HS set up to Shattrath for a logn time before moving it to Dalaran to easier access to some Northrend content I'm farming, and have all my gear mogged into TBC tier armor (t4 and 5 look very nice on draenei paladin).

At least with demon hunters, they aren't as heavily tied to one particular character as the DKs to Arthas. Even after the Legion gets inevitably repelled at the end of the expansion, they'll still be around, and demons will keep being a major threat, so having demon hunters around makes sense (they've been around since the War of the Ancients, really, just in case Legion showed up again). DKs on the other hand became kind of pointless when the Scourge stopped being a real problem and their own story arc was concluded with the death of Arthas, with very little to go from there.

Lorewise the factions aren't even terribly relevant anymore. The Alliance and Horde lose most of their militaries at the Broken Shore at the start of Legion and in the demon invasions leading up to it, and the faction-agnostic Class Orders are lorewise the only major forces left on the planet by the time you hit level 101.

Knights of the Silver Hand and Ebon Blade are a more meaningful rivalry than Horde and Alliance, but we'll never see that represented ingame because it would ruin raiding.

Well Tauren have a lot of shamans and connection to the elements, and half the Elemental Lords sided with the Twilight's Hammer.

Also, they're pretty closely tied to the Earth specifically, and that was Deathwing's sphere of influence. I wouldn't be surprised if a fair number of Tauren clans had ancestral oaths binding them to Neltharion or something.
>>
>>48211839
not too sure about that, with the hub-like shape everythings taking recently I predict the faction barriers for raid and grouping will fall rather sooner than later

Legion is the ideal stepstone for that aswell, not to mention it's also going into a more focused single player experience with the character becoming chosen ones and faction leaders and whatnot

Nah the Ebon Blade crosses some dirty lines and goes full Scourge in Legion. See all the WORLD POLICE posts earlier up the threat.

The infertility thing makes little sense. Like, yes, you lost your powers, except the arbitrary ones you still have, sacrificed them for the good of the world, et cetera, good job. Aren't you still, like, biological lifeforms, though? Are the protodragons suddenly infertile as well? And what about the remaining black dragons? Their aspect didn't give up his powers. They're corrupt and being hunted down and killed, except for Wrathion, and that one dude in Outland, but aren't they still theoretically capable of breeding?

And what about the nether dragons? They're descended from black dragons, left the planet entirely and mutated into something new. They can't have been affected either, can they? And hey, if they are descended from black dragons, and are now free from corruption due to having grown up away from Azeroth and the old gods in the earth there, what's to stop them coming back now that they've evolved into something different? And can they still breed with black dragons?

What's to stop Wrathion getting himself a few nether dragon girlfriends and popping out a whole flight of uncorrupted netherblack hybrid dragons?

In my game? Yes, they are, if not allied, than at worst neutral towards each other...but tauren are still a part of the Horde, not an independant faction

>Actually as far as the storyline goes in WoW why are players tied to factions? Gameplay mechanics aside it seems like players should just be able to be freelance adventurers; The plot seems to have both factions working together to stop an unspeakable evil so many times they may as well not be at war.

The game is set pre-WoW (after WC3:FT and some books (Circle of Hatred)), but before shit hit the fan. Sillithid/qiraji are only beginning to stir, Dark Portal is not yet reopened, Naxxramas is still in Northrend. Factions exists because racism and political reasons. PC can serve as a neutral mercenary, but Forsaken near Stormwind would still be killed on sight before he gets a chance to explain anything. The players can also potentialy change "history": they can try to ally all factions against Forsaken, if they want to, but they may have easier or harder time dealing with certain factions depending on their race and affliction
>>
>>48211898
The single player experience was already present, and probably stronger, in WoD. You character is the commander of your faction's war effort on Draenor, and you'll probably spend most of the time you're not questing or doing instances sitting in your instanced garrison without even seeing other players. At least in Legion you can see other players of the same class in the order halls, and you're probably going to spend most of your downtime in Dalaran.

What, Wrathion? No. We literally play through the quest where we get his egg in Cata. He's from some rando lady black dragon, and we actually nab like three eggs and a dead whelp or something from her, and use a titan artifact to recombine the DNA from all the samples into one uncorrupted black dragon egg.

By this point, Wrathion is like... actually only three or four years old. Apparently dragons grow up fast despite being super long-lived once they reach adulthood. It's weird.

Ulduar is still ym favorite raid design-wise, but I generally prefer TBC's "weirder" style. Plus TBC tier sets just look better on Draenei, since both t4 and 5 are pretty much designed with them in mind (t4 is the armour the Draenei paladin in the opening cutscene wears, as well as worn by several Draenei NPCs, while t5 has the purple crystal aestethic most of their stuff has). I don't really like any of the Wrath paladin sets, aside from t8, which is fairly interesting looking, but not particularly "paladin-y".

Vrykul to human was considered a curse for a reason.

>The mists closed up completely as the future became indistinct. Sylvanas could no longer feel her body. She was floating in some kind of limbo. She realized she could see herself, and held up her hands in silent awe. Her flesh was a golden pink again, firm and luminous as it had been in life. But she was not alone here.

>With a gasp, she saw that she was surrounded. Nine warrior women drifted in a circle around her, and their beauty outshone even hers. The Val'kyr appeared as they had in life. Some had raven-dark hair that fell around tan faces and jewel-like blue eyes. Others had blonde manes the pale, brilliant color of sun shining on snow. Their faces were soft, but their jaws hard. Their arms were smooth and muscled; their thighs wide and strong. Each held a different weapon: a spear, a halberd, a great two-handed claymore that stretched from chin to ground in a shimmering swath of polished steel. Each was the greatest warrior of her generation.

>They were all just like me, Sylvanas saw. Vain, victorious, and proud.

>"Yes, we were," said the blonde Val'kyr armed with the claymore, answering Sylvanas as if she'd spoken aloud. Her voice was rich and full. "I am Annhylde the Caller. These are my sister battlemaidens, and we are the only nine who remain. We served the warriors of the north in life, and chose to continue our service in death."

>"To serve the Lich King."

>The vision of Annhylde rankled. "Did you choose to serve the Lich King?" she asked.

Sabellian and the Nether dragons are all in the unresolved dangling questlines bin, I'm afraid, along with Magatha and the mcguffinstone.

We can hope that they come back during a Legion patch. Nether dragon reinforcements from outland to help against the Legion? Maybe they act like guides to carry/protect players during forays into the Twisting Nether? Maybe at some point a raid boss where ranged classes fly around on a nether drake rail shooter while the melee classes dance around some constant mobility thing?

I wouldn't mind a tauren raid patch, either. Magatha comes back, recruits the yaungol to go with her grimtotem, she uses the doomstone to raise up some raid instance while she does some crazy ill-advised plan to use it to fight the Legion while also pulling some evil scheme of her own. Bain and a bunch of other moos come along to sort things out with her once and for all, et cetera. Or maybe something more broad? There are so many tauren subraces now, you could have a patch where the Legion try to, like, yank some forgotten cow ancient ancestor of all the tauren out of the emerald dream or something, and we need an adventure to stop that.

Maybe finally clear up who the Earth Mother is. Before all the new void gods stuff, I was thinking it'd be cool if she was a benevolent old god, like a counterbalance to the dickish Titans. Dunno what she'd be, now. Hopefully not just another name for Eonar or a fucking naaru or anything like that. Maybe Azeroth, somehow?

I'm not sure why you guys shit on Kosak so much. It's probably because he's the only dude with story related shit in his job title, therefore anything that happens in story is his fault.

Spoilers: Kosak gave us the best character to come out of WoW: WoD-era Khadgar.

WoD-era Khadgar is nothing but memes. Cata-era Garrosh was much better, not the character derailment that happend in MoP.

Are draenei all immortal? I thought that was just Velen, because of his supreme lighty lightness. They seemed to have no problem having kids, so I'd have thought they'd overpopulate everyone else if they were ageless.

Except... if you remove orcs, Horde isn't much of a problem anymore. Tauren? Friendly with nelves, peaceful. Pandaren? Alliance already has those. Goblins? They'll ally with anyone with money. Belves? They were about to join Alliance anyway, if Garrosh's fuckery didn't intervened, and Jaina doesn't want to be part of the Alliance anymore, so no problem there. Trolls? They would be happy having Durotar for themselves, doing nothing and smoking weed.

Forsaken would be the only problem left, and they are evil bastards who only use their membership in the Horde for their own end, nobody would miss them.

If not immortal, then extremely long-lived. There are some NPCs (Jessera of Mac'Aree) that remember Argus, and draenei fled it some 25-30k years ago.
