And that slated indian artificer planeswalker will design thopter-shitters that act as mobile toilets

If I recall, the quote said that at least one member will be involved in every set.
In a better universe, it would be possible for one member to just explore a plane by themselves, and/or take on a more subdued role in the events of the block, without necessarily twisting the entire set to revolve around them.
But they won't do that.

Actually, the one about the myr was an original work, and that was set shortly after the fall of Memnarch, so she's not far off from having been around for old phyrexia
OG Mirrodin was before the mending too, so she's most likely an Oldwalker
>>

That's because Jace, the character, is blue/white, with a somewhat heavier blue focus.

Mirrodin didn't exist until well after a hundred years past the end of the Invasion. And Memnarch's fall was long after Argentum became Mirrodin. There's a SIGNIFICANT gap between Old Phyrexia's fall and Memnarch's fall.
>>48126275
Honestly? No, because they've retconned her so much that not even the authors know which parts of her story are canon and which are not, making everything a confusing mess even within a single story. Her main characterization currently is an overdependence on a specific elemental only found on Zendikar, and an overusage of the word 'oh'

they were a motley crew of varying walks/colors of life that were brought together to stop a threat to the universe

The EXECUTION was wildly different, but the IDEA is similar. And of course it's shit, they're all fucking planeswalkers. Before even getting into the atrocious writing, there's literally nothing keeping them together. Planes are named for their most populous planet eg Ravnica is the planet that you go to when you travel to the plane of ravnica
Planes are distinct universes
You cannot space travel from Innistrad to New Phyrexia, the Blind Eternities are not space
It has always been the case that the planes constitute a multiverse
>>
>>48126623

Weatherlight crew were okay, but that era of "creative" for magic was terrible, full of nonsense cards that were terrible concept and mechanics mismatches.
>>
>>48126783
Weatherlight crew were much more heavily pushed than new walkers. For example, I wouldn't really know how stupid a lot of new walker shit is if I didn't read threads here. I don't read Magic novels; I've never read Magic novels. Not too many magic cards feature Planeswalkers on them in most sets. Like half of all cards in Weatherlight, Tempest, etc have the Weatherlight crew and their awful quips on them.

I just hate the current trend of making an interesting world and just sticking the Jacetus league in it and making about how they show up and fix/ruin everything. It hurts my interest in the setting because instead of focusing on some interesting natives we just get the bland patrol with their "I'm X color so I act like this" personality's. Shits boring

It's not because they called it the Jacetice League.
It's because they were spamming him with a shitload of things with foul language and derogatory comments (which he doesn't post on his blog), so he responded to the entire group via the one post that DIDN'T have those things. Thus making it seem like he's against the 'jacetice league' term when it's taken out of context, because people only post the one response and not the followup - while claiming what you yourself just claimed.

Tempest is extremely damaged by this. Rath is a top tier setting by design. But Tempest is a very weak flavor set, because every other card is Gerrard and co and their guided amusement park ride.

Also, not really related, but it always bothered me how they turned the most interesting Weatherlight character into a roided out freak who takes the prize as the dumbest looking villain in Magic history. Ascendant Evincar looks retarded and is featured in so many cards with bad art.

Most planes actually seem to be about the size of at most earth plus lunar orbit as the whole of that universe, rather than being a massive Our Universe sized universe that we happen to see a tiny speck of. Old geocentrism type deals.
Thus why something that eats planes of existence is a threat, yet not instantly consume the habitable known world the moment it shows up (while also not being a complete nonthreat from taking forever to eat a universe-size plane)
>>
>>48127377
Is this new? There's basically been a "minimum one" of the Lorwyn five in every set until they decided to replace Garruk and Ajani. Unless it's always "By our powers combined, Gatewatch save the day" I don't see a problem with those walkers appearing regularly.

Now, seperating this part just for you guy. I don't like GATEWATCH specifically. They are not interesting characters to me (and those who were have been retconned completely into boring molds). I don't want to have every set with atleast one of them taking the stage. It's basically The Avengers at this point. Surely, this is nothing like today's corruption stories where nothing bad ever happens. Not like being stabbed by a white god for performing their will. Or being morphed into a hideous conglomeration of flesh and madness just because you are the guardians of a plane.

Everyone knows that the Ice Age is deepest lore. And that's including related sets. It is also how you do a plane changing disaster right. First you have the sets where the disaster starts to fuck things up (Dark, Fallen Empires), then you have the post apocalypse set (Ice Age), then the resolution (Alliances, which is also the weakest flavor of the bunch). It lasted a long time, but when it finally ended, the plane everyone knew and loved finally returned. Mirrodin is irrevocably ruined.

He fucking couldn't, m8.

Urza was completely insane/delirious during the invasion and spent most of his power killing phyrexian armies in his powered armor. The only thing keeping him alive after the duel with gerrard was the thran artifacts in his head.

Oh yeah, totally important characters. Clearly not just a pair of randoms in a gigantic list of legends that is either a set of 12 characters or a set of 20 depending on definition.

Here, apparently this is your proposed solution, instead of having 5 walkers that get shoved down our throat over the course of ten sets, let's having 20 and have them features on every card ever and pretend it matters when one dies.

Urza didn't quite care for Yawgmoth. To the point that he made a moon powered death ray that used his head to kill him. Also the silver guy in the background is a terminator he made to kill him before he became a god but his time machine/Hogwarts island blew up.

Clearly, as old things are good and new things are bad. Clearly the Weatherlight crew, a comically stereotypical band of misfits is way better than the current one, because there were more of them and they were on every single fucking card from that era.

>>48129297
Oh yeah. One block and a novel isn't enough, they should've dragged that character through three blocks before killing him for some drama. That would've been way better.

I literally do not get people who hate the planeswalkers being shoved down their throats but loved the Weatherlight Saga. Here, have some consolation, some day, marketing will realize that the Gatewatch is Weatherlight 2.0 and pull the plug on it. And then we'll get Weatherlight 3.0 and curmudgeons will complain about how much better the Gatewatch were.

Yeah, clearly fiction designed for 13 year olds in the 90s is inherently better than fiction designed for 13 year olds twenty years later.

Your description of "danger" rings hollow to me. He faced challenges and threats to his life, but of course plot got him through the day as the protagonist. That's not bad writing or anything. That's how media works.
Nobody would be interested in a story where the hero dies a quarter of the way into act 1 and then acts 2&3 are just extensive descriptions of how the BBEG takes over and destroys everything good in the world.

You know what card I hate? Hull Breach. Its flavor has fuck all to do with the card's effect or color. It shows nothing interesting for anyone not already invested in the ridiculous plot line.

Sure, Origins had fucktons of Gatewatch cards. The vertical cycle, the walkers, their legendary mentors or villains and whatnot. But even that set had less stuff like Hull Breach. Even if you know fuck all about Jace, Alhammaret is still a big Sphinx.

Ah, clearly Jace and Gideon, two character appearing on about 6 cards total in three sets is the same thing as being the critical focus of a set appearing on every third card.

Right. Clearly this is a fair comparison. And yeah, Zendikar block 6 years ago is obviously gave us our fill of three walkers that were sort of relevant and appeared on a dozen cards.

>>
>>48130039

The spark can be contained in many places, but it's the brain that matters because you need it to think. See Yawgmoth stabbing a planeswalker in the brain when still mortal and keeping him prisoner by continuosly scrambling it to stop him from being lucid enought to regenerate.
>>
>>48129907
Argus Kos is a more interesting character than any of the Oathwalkers and he was only in 1 block. The new walkers are boring despite having tons of lore shoved down out throats. If every character has Harry Potter levels of chosen one BS and the people who actually live on the planes and get affected by their "adventures" and machinations get nothing sucks. I stopped really caring about the story once Jace became the face of magic because I saw this shit coming. Shame because early Nissa and Sorin seemed interesting before they blanded them up so they could be more marketable.

This is what I am arguing against. The Weatherlight crew is featured and referenced on significantly larger proportions of cards in the sets where they were the main characters than the current planeswalkers.

Even if you are blindly convinced by nostalgia that the twelve members of the Weatherlight crew were infinitely more interesting than the current eighteen walkers of note, you must admit that in a given set, significantly significantly more cards spoonfed you their lore.

Alpha. Arabian Nights. Antiquities. The Dark. Ice Age. Homelands. Alliances. Mirage. Visions. Weatherlight. Tempest. Stronghold. Exodus. Urza's Saga. Urza's Legacy. Urza's Destiny. Mercadian Masques. Nemesis. Prophecy. Invasion. Planeshift. Apocalypse. And then a two block epilogue, Coldsnap, and Time Spiral block to finish things off. If you're counting all that as 'the gatewatch', then everything Urza related or Nine Titans related also counts as Weatherlight related.
And I only didn't include Fallen Empires or Legends because I wasn't sure off the top of my head if Phyrexia or the various walkers and whatnot were referenced on any of the cards there, and don't feel like looking it up.
