Thematic EC Issues Edition
Alternative Crusade? Sub-Edition
In the previous bread the DG claimed their dice was the best, an Anon got help with his army, 1250 is inappropriate to bring Scoria out, another mk5 discussion was made along with WB eye colors, one question on the least played legions lead to a slight arguement about the EC and their theme, we saw a BAfag's attempt at making a conversion, Anons talked about how their last games went and Praetor ranks were listed, an idea for an alternative Crusade was made plus more from the last thread >>48094525

Don't you mean Legiones Astartes Crusade Army List? (it's on the mega, I think phones have trouble with that)
But don't worry -- reading that book alone isn't enough anymore
Gotta read that one (LACAL), then the rules presented on HH4 (p.244 IIRC) and then HH5 and HH6 added some stuff to the space marine list.

Given so many people seem to want their legion-specific units in Elites, I can only conclude that there isn't enough good stuff in Elites compared to Heavy Support. How do fix Elites in LACAL (without pushing people even further toward quad-mortars and rapiers)?
>>
>>48115643
Which one ? What does LACAL stand for ?
>>
>>48115708
>so many people seem to want their legion-specific units in Elites
Because it's easier to think of them as "Terminator/Veteran replacements" than trying to fit them in all those RoWs that restrict the number of Fast or Heavy choices you can bring.
>>48115742
Nigga plz -> >>48115665 , that's a good quality spoonfeed.

I think the main thing is that elite terminators can be troops with pride of the legion and Iron warriors have both their special units in heavy support. Plus AoD lets you have 4 elite slots meaning unless you want to spam 4 of the same unit it allows for more versatility to put them there.

>>
>>48115819
>Did they buff the Champion consul ?
Nah, he's still a budget Praetor for duels, and in that role some would say he's surpassed by the Delegatus (book 6), who also gets a MC weapon but also has MotL. So, unless the Champion is mounted on a bike or has AP2 on initiative he could very well get killed by a random artificer powerfist sgt.
Note: You don't want your Delegatus in a duel.

Other than preferring one model over another, is there any real reason to take legion basilisks over legion medusas? I'm trying to build an Iron fire list and I want a reason to run the less common basilisk vs the ubiquitous medusa.
>>
>>48116749
FW character creation and/or upgrade rules for campaigns. Also leads to the hilarious outcome of phoenix guards striking at I 8 on the charge. Fulgrim is apparently just above average in terms of speed compared to some members of his legion.

Basilisks seem like they're meant for huge tables as their range can't go beneath 36". Medusa has that AP 2 though.

To add onto that, Medusas are going to be very close to the opponent's units with 36" range. If the meta runs lots of drop pods, Medusa. If the meta doesn't get past the table within two turns, Basilisk.

So I had a thought just a few minutes ago. Some legionaries lived with other legions, and I was wondering what would a World Eater living with the Emperor's Children turn out as? So how are Ursarax these days? I know they got a points increase in the red book and with the synergy Vorax get with Legio Cybernetica (and the new Arlatax/Homonculex) they don't seem quite as cool as they used to. That said... their models finally came out and they're bitchin'. I want to get some but I don't want to regret it. The coolest looking models still make me sad if they just get shot off the table every game before they get to do their jobs, and my fear is that Ursarax are going to have exactly that problem since they're only T5 and 4+/5+++.

Also, I'm assuming you always give them Power Fists since they're only I2? Seems pointless to use Lightning Claws when all the things they'd want to kill are I4 anyway, and PFs give ID against those same targets. On the plus side it looks like the models actually have the option for either weapon on every model in the set for once so I may just look into magnetizing them.

Aight, loyalties don't matter to this eater of worlds: he's pissed and it was Angron who did it, and he won't shy away from teaching what "left-behind-picked-up-by-ECs-and-then-bombed" pattern pissed means, is that so?

>what would a World Eater living with the Emperor's Children turn out as?
The WS 9 World eater special character you could build.

In all seriousness my guess would be some sort of aggressive finesse. EC were known for using axes too, they used any nice weapons, so aesthetically I imagine he would be a World Eater with some more fancy looking armour and some sort of fancy power axe as a paragon blade. His behavior IMO would end up being something like an aspect warrior, outside of battle he is surprisingly calm, intelligent, and cultured, perhaps taking up art like many of the EC do but in battle his war face goes on and he is a savage killer, still as intelligent and clever as before but now his intelligence is dedicated towards combat, noticing the weaknesses in an opponent and taking them apart bit by bit.

His axe is doomed to look like shit. Better start from scratch. Every EC needs to learn arts, the transfer students can learn weapons manufacturing, he can make his own chainaxe from scratch.

Or he could just use a paragon blade and a pair of falax swords. Hard to get more weeaboo than running around with more than two swords plus it means he could get up to 9 attacks on the charge (granted they are AP 5 rending attacks but for practicality he still has the paragon blade).

Looks are a factor...are you going to draw it? For all we know we could imagine a "charnabal weapon" axe instead of the stricter charnabal sabre, the same way if happens to Paragon blades.

I think the set up of the story should be that our WE is returning home and he's all like "great I can't wait to get back to my legion and away from those soft ECs and fighting wars like a proper astartes again." And he gets back and all the World Eaters are like "When did Captain Eidred "Blood clot" Kaxxur become such a fucking dandy? And wtf is a fencing axe?"
>>
>>48119051
We could have both scenarios if we want to, as in, Kaxxur Fencingpants finally reaching surviving WEs after Istvaan and then they barely recognize him (as he's no longer caked in blood all the fucking time)

Y'know, all this talk of legions really has me wondering this one question. I know I'll probably end up never playing this game as I have no FLGS, the nearest GW is four hours away, and all my friends are either poorfags or not interested in 40/30k, but how do the Iron Warriors and Word Bearers play? After thinking about the legions I like and would paint, it's come down to those two and I'd like to know how they are on the tabletop. All I know is that Word Bearers are pretty good at melee and can make everyone that's important a psyker, and the Iron Warriors love Beep-Boops and being Shooty.

Sorry for the blog-post.

Hey folks, I'm just getting into 30k and I've picked myself up the BaC box. I'm not sure if I want to build all 30 as Veteran Tacticals, vanilla Tacticals, or some combination of the two. Any advice, preferred loadouts, etc?

Northern Bakersfield, anon. The closest GW according to their official site is about 90 miles away, and the two LGS near me don't stock 40k stuff anymore, and one of them is more of a gamestore than anything else, with the /tg/ stuff in the back and about two tables mtg players use regularly.

Thank the primordial truth I ordered my box before this.
>>
>>48120956
Rowboat and the Night Lords. Weird combo.
>>
>>48123149

Basic run down:

>Scorias player writes down where in the ZM board he will deploy, keeps note on hand
>Scorias player controls door placement during deployment phase, can open and close them at will and may place x number of tarantula turrets, and may declare x number of locations where techthralls/murder servitors will spawn
>Opposing player must attempt to evacuate as many units as possible from one side of the board to the other

Other mechanics

>When a unit passes through a corridor that would otherwise give them line of sight of scoria, he is immediately revealed, this mechanic is also used for tech thralls/murder servitors
>Two (or more) control terminals are placed randomly on the board, if a friendly model with the battlesmith rule is within 3" of the terminal they gain control of all doors and turrets not within 12" of Scoria
>A unit with an augury scanner within 12" of Scoria/Tech Thralls will be notified that their is "something in that corrider"

The point being that Scoria manipulates the board to separate and stymie the loyalist units and either pick them apart at his leisure or bog them down cutting through doors

>>
>>48125513
I know that feel. Here's the army I mentioned >>48125459

White Scars: Chogorian Brotherhood (1745/1750)
HQ
Centurion-Delegatus (130)
- Bike, artificer armor, refractor field, MC power glaive, melta bombs

Centurion-Librarian (165)
- ML 2, jetbike, force axe, melta bombs

TROOPS
Jetbikes x9 (410)
Volkite Culverins x3

Jetbikes x3 (160)
Multi Melta, Melta Bombs

Outriders x9 (335)
Sarge, glaive, melta bomb
3x power axes

Outriders x3 (180)
Melta Guns x3, Melta Bombs

HEAVY SUPPORT
Sicaran Battle Tank (175)
Lascannons

Sicaran Venator (190)

Delegatus goes with the big Outrider blob, gets stuck in close combat.

Librarian goes with the big Sky Hunter blob, rolls Divination and they shoot things to hell with re-rolling 21 heavy bolters and 12 S6 volkites. Could get full BS overwatch, 4++, or curse a target to be Rended depending on discipline luck. The big win would be Misfortune, but most of the other powers are fine too.

The small Outriders and Sky Hunters chase after vehicles and make themselves annoying. And turbo their way to an objective at the end.

The Sicarans are fast so ignore the ROW penalties, and they do what they must do.

So it's basically an incredibly fast army where everyone is T5, half of them are Sv 2, and there's fast Av 13.

>>
>>48127322

No, if you take a look at the sets on FW for the legion bundles with B@C, it clearly shows a different paint style than what FW has, the matte Alpha Legion is the biggest example of this. GW did all of the apint jobs for Calth because FW is a little stupid when it comes to this shit

>>48127448
Y'know, I can kind of see where you're going with this, but I've also seen pics on FW's site where the colorschemes are slightly different as well.

Is there any good alternatives for chain fists, other than a powerfist with a chainsaw or that cataphractii underarm chainsaw? I'd like something more like an eviscerator or a bit chainaxe. Problem is that FW seems to think a chainaxe on a terminator is a power axe, so I can't use one of those without someone complaining.

That's just a powerfist with a chainsaw. I'm looking something handheld, instead of attached to the arm.
>>
>>48128941
That's fine, but new players need to understand that a lot of those restrictions don't exist in the Horus Heresy and FW have gone out of their way to stress that. There is no "correct" color scheme or representation of rank or specific honors. There are instead, dozens, if not hundreds of variations of each that can vary across company or batallion (not to mention the existence of batallion), let alone chapter or legion.

I use bigass chainswords to represent eviscerators. Rules wise they are the same except one is a specialist weapon and one is two handed and I figure a terminator should be able to use an eviscerator with one hand if an unarmoured sororitas can use it with two hands.

My fantasy was for the Great Crusade to run its course, Mankind safe from xenos, Then the Emperor would insight an extremely well planned civil war with the Mechanicum using the element of surprise with the full might of the legions and Imperial Army using both closet-sane Martian Adepts like Zeth as well as Emperor-trained scientists to replace the Mechanicus and remove religion and monopoly over technology in one fell swoop.
>>
>>48129307
Your fantasy sounds boring. Successful crusade is the most boring setting imaginable, it is like star trek without aliens or social problems.
>>
>>48127981

None really. Some people love Mor Deythen but there isn't necessarily any must have unit, it's nice though because it lets you fill in the gaps in your army list very efficiently if you build for it.

Also you get Tyrant Terminators as Elites and Phoenix Guard with counter charge and Preferred Enemy (Everything), so it's not hard to make your opponents hella jelly
>>
>>48129282
Well, you can have a model with a two-handed weapon and a shield, so it's not like the weapon physically needs two hands. Likewise some single-handed weapons are held by two hands on some models.

can somebody sell me on Phalanx Warders and/or why I shouldn't just run them as Breachers with pimpin' shields? I just spent half an hour giving the pieces a bath and I still have no clue how to build them. My idea was: Sgt with Power Fist, 2 Melta Guns, Vexilla, No Axes
>>
>>48129960

You shouldn't run phalanx warders, they are only kind of worth it when running the Stone Gauntlet, but only 1 attack and have to give up their shooting to gain a real CCW, and once you do that they cost only 5pts less then a terminator, who will have more attacks, a shooting attack, and a better armour and invul save
>>
>>48129960
>>48130203
They're better for ZM or just fun games. I've seen 15 in a spartan with polux in the Stone Gauntlet wreak havoc with some breaching charges. It's unexpected.
>>
>>48130203
>>48130234
Ok I'm convinced. I probably won't have enough breachers to run a legit stone gauntlet unless they release plastic ones later this year. so now my question is: what do with 10 breachers? I've obviously got my knights, can I use a tactical blob and 10 breachers as a footslogging bubblewrap? or would I need at least 15 breachers with an apothecary before it isn't utter shit?
>>
>>48129351
I agree it'd be a little dull, and I don't like the thought of wiping out even more xenos races, but this future would've had its share of social problems.

The Emperor's project, as I understand it, would have required wiping out the Navigators and Astropaths after completing the Webway and convincing Magnus to sit in the chair that powered one of its nexuses for all time. At this time I assume the Edict of Nikea would've been upgraded to "kill all marines with psychic potential." For humanity's sake (as in humane-ness, not the species) you hope there'd be resistance.

Then it'd be time to get rid of the last god standing, the Omnissiah. What is the Mechanicum without its religion and superstition? Not much, so it's full-on civil war against the people who make all your weapons. How do the legions with close ties to the Mechanicum react? Do starships, tanks, and bolters have machine spirits capable of rebelling? We find out! (It might just be secret programming installed by the Mechanicum as a failsafe.) Enjoy your marine-on-titan action. Maybe the darker elements in the Mechanicum resort to bringing back AI as the galaxy crumbles around them, introducing a new long-term problem.

I know it wouldn't be popular, but the C'Tan would get involved (honestly that's the one piece of OldCron fluff that I kinda liked).

I wonder if post-Mechanicum industry would be as dirty. That mess of pollution and its terrible living conditions fits 40k's grimdark, but doesn't really fit the atmosphere of a successful Great Crusade.
>>
>>48130347
Other way round. The webway wouldn't have required wiping out the navigators and astropaths, Emps just wanted to do that because he fucking hates psykers and building a webway would mean he doesn't need them any more.

>>
>>48130347
You are assuming the emperor wanted to kill everyone that wasn't him. There was no implication that he intended to purge all psychic marines or the mechanicum and odds are he would have relented on Nikea once chaos had been starved to death while the mechanicum could be slowly modernized since they already viewed him as an avatar of the omnissiah. If the Omnissiah told you "hey you can start making new technology" and all of the mechanicum members alive when the Imperium was founded were dead odds are the mechanicum would have been fine making new tech and slowly being integrated into the Imperium.

The Emperor's goals were to seal off humanity from the Warp AND, unrelatedly, to kill all mutants to keep humanity pure. Getting rid of navigators and astropaths serves both goals. I'm sure he would've done it earlier but the price (the collapse of civilization, yet again) would've been too high without the Webway in place.

>>48130483
>There was no implication that he intended to purge all psychic marines or the mechanicum

Not directly, but it's heavily implied that he intended to rid humanity of all psykers. And I don't see how you starve the Warp of belief with billions of (Mechanicum-aligned) people being super-religious and superstitious. If he could starve Chaos without doing those things, why would he bother with the Webway and enforced atheist-rationalist culture?

It should probably be explained, if you haven't figured it out already, that most legion troops choices are kind of shit

Tacs are the best of a bad bunch by virtue of having the lowest cost and cheapest transport option, but otherwise lack real upgrade options
Assault squads are very fucking expensive, to the point where a pair of well kitted out squads could run you over 1000pts
Breachs are also just kind of bad, the ability to mix in special weapons and their added survivability is helpful, but their slow, lose melee attacks, cost more then tacticals and aren't any more survivable against weapons that can't pierce their armour (i.e. just about anything a troops choice unit will throw at you)

Your probably better off investing as little as possible into troops so they can effectively hold a position and focus on fighty units, like terminators, jet bikes and tanks

IF are actually positioned pretty well to compensate for the shit troops choices, since your PotL vets are GOAT, with +1 BS sniper bolters/heavy bolters while ignoring pinning

If your heart set on using breachers you could go with min sized squad with a pimped out sergeant and either flamers/graviton guns to be expensive backfield objective campers
>>
>>48130649
>Based forge world will save us from horrible troops with the updated red book
>Breachers drop in cost, get move through cover, get pseudo inv save against AP3 blasts
>Assaults drop in points and all assault-based units such as destroyer, reavers, iconoclasts also drop in points
>>
something the anon above also fails to mention that makes tacticals shine is fury of the legion, since it effectivly doubles the damage output of tacticals compared to the alternatives. so breachers have a shitty invuln and half the shooty tooty compared to a similarly sized tactical squad, while being more expensive.

SoH (2000pts)

Chaplain
Artificer Armour, Jump Pack, Melta Bombs, Refractor Field

Vigilator
Charnabal Sabre, Melta Bombs, Refractor Field, Scout Armour

Maloghurst the Twisted (The Long March)

Legion Tactical Squad x15
Artificer Armour, Melta Bombs, Power Weapon, Extra CCW

Legion Tactical Squad x15
Artificer Armour, Melta Bombs, Power Weapon, Extra CCW

Reaver Attack Squad x15
Artificer Armour, Melta Bombs,
2x Power Fist, 2x Power Weapon, Jump packs

Cortus Dreadnought
Chainfist, Multi-Melta

Justaerin Terminator Squad
-Anvillus Pattern Dreadclaw Drop Pod, 2x Chainfist, 5x Combi-Weapons, 3x Lightning claw

Laser Vindy

Chaplain goes with reavers, vigilator scouts a tac squad, Mal goes with the other. I'm undecided on the Justaerin combi weapons still.

He just had a single warlord left to defeat, and Emps' arrival and subsequent dare forced Morty to try to rush the final boss.
Still, back when he was fighting in the warlord's name his faction did attain supremacy (like with Perty -- Olympia wasn't his, but his adoptive father's, and only kind of), and then had to undo everything when he left.
By the age Morty had finally decided he had endured (oh the irony) enough of the necromancer, Fulgrim however had already saved his world from starvation and enacted the Chemosian renassaince all by himself.

It's a little unfair comparing Morty's "gotta fight the undead under the acid rain" to Fulgrims "I'm tired of being poor" scenario, though.

And then there's "Mugging and Nails for baby shower" Angron. Poor dude.
>>
>>48132575
>Still southern US sounding though, he's from Barbarus
It took 5,500 years for Proto-Indo-European to become Southern US English (and Spanish, Russian, Hindi, a bunch of things in between). Add another 24,500 years to that and it's hard to say that Southern Drawl will exist in M31.

Grammar and vocabulary won't change as quickly (it sounds like they tried to bring back or preserve Latin in this future) but accents do. The stereotypical British accent (to us Americans) is younger than the US is, for example.
>>
>>48130806
Different guy, but here's my Cortus dilemma:
If I give it a Kheres and Chainfist, I can take one Hunter-Killer missile on both of my Javelins. However, for the same points I can go Power/Chainfist and 1 grav gun while keeping my hunter killers. 2 grav guns with powerfists would take one missile away, and to keep the chainfist and have 2 grav guns I'd have to lose the missiles and cut a few points elsewhere. I already have a Contemptor-Mortis with Kheres in the list. What's my best option? Kheres is more shots with rending, could take out a tank in one go potentially, while grav is one haywire blast, but that's one less attack for when it does what it really wants- punching things. It'll be dropping in a pod, too.
>>
>>48132755
>The stereotypical British accent (to us Americans) is younger than the US is, for example.
This. No one I know realized this and when I tell them it either blows their minds or they don't believe it. Iirc, the accent was developed as a fake one to differentiate themselves from the Americans and it evolved from their. I've heard someone say that Shakespeare would've sounded like someone from the south, than a modern brit.
>>
>>48132894
I've heard something similar in that Bostonian English would have sounded closer to the old English accent than the modern English accent.
>>
>>48132755
>>48132894

I've also heard that generic American accents aren't really an accent, but a neutral lack of accent, sort of like how black isn't a color. That's why super British sounding rockstars sound like Americans when they sung and are forced to enunciate in certain ways that get rid of their accent.
>>
>>48132894
>>48132979
And it goes weirder if you go even further back in time. Here's a poem I love:

>Ye knowe eek, that in forme of speche is chaunge
>With-inne a thousand yeer, and wordes tho
>That hadden prys, now wonder nyce and straunge
>Us thinketh hem; and yet they spake hem so,
>And spedde as wel in love as men now do;
>Eek for to winne love in sondry ages,
>In sondry londes, sondry been usages.

—Geoffrey Chaucer, Troilus and Criseyde, Book II

Roughly:
"You know that language changes
over a thousand years, and words that were then in use
now seem strange to us; but they really did talk that way,
and they spoke as eloquently about love as anyone did in any age or country.")

>>48133066
>I've also heard that generic American accents aren't really an accent, but a neutral lack of accent
What do you mean by "generic American accent"?
>>
>>48132894
>Iirc, the accent was developed as a fake one to differentiate themselves from the Americans
Somehow I doubt this - it might apply a little to RP, the old-fashioned "newsreader accent", but there's too many local accents for differentiation from an ex-colony to be a reason.
On the other hand the american accents being closer to older English ones I already had heard of, but that's nothing compared to Quebecois French - the French language has evolved so much everywhere but there

Or would you also say that the DG has two dedicated deepstrike units as well?
>>48133893
Meh, that RoW is merely Alpharius half-assedly saying "ssshh guys, I'm Roboute now, remember?"
I mean, choose-your-rule, come on :^)
Lacklustre benefits, maybe Counter attack breachers/Invictarii or something like that
>>
>>48133946
if you run militia/army but otherwise no
>>
>>48133974
Why does Guilliman's model look the most generic out of all the Primarch models?
>>
>>48134034
because thats his thing

also it isn't some edgy action pose
>>
>>48133893
I feel like it was designed for a BaC-heavy meta (i.e. footslogging infantry because we can't afford the monetary cost of transports and other tanks). It's brilliant defensively, because it gives you an overwatch boost and UMs get their legiones astartes (UM) bonus if they shoot at an enemy unit that another UM unit already fired at. Running makes it easier to get into combat, which similarly synergizes with their bonus to assaulting units already in combat with a different UM unit.

Footslogging armies are rarely all that great, but they sure are common. So why not take one with bonuses?

He is surprisingly good in Primarch vs Primarch fights.
>>
>>48134080
yeah imo hes honestly the best primarch because for his cost/armybuffs
>>
>>48134080
>>48134100
Guilliman is solid as fuck just like in lore
>>
>>48134100
>>48134131

Yeah he is, its depressing that he is better than Perturabo. Sad face, at least I went with Blackshields.
>>
>>48134169
Nigga, it's depressing that he's better than, and can beat every other primarch that isn't Fulgrim, Angron or Horus (and probably Sangy, Russ and some other), and even then his buff are better or he's 100pts cheaper.
But he's the spiritual liege, right?
>>
>>48134219
I don't even know bro, the favoritism persists even into 30k when it comes to the Ultrasmurfs, at least here they aren't the writers of all the chapters combat doctrines.
>>
>>48133416
Pretty sure he means Locutarus squads and Fulmentarii. Damocles Rhinos don't deep strike.
>>
>>48134405
Damocles allows better deepstrike and reserve rolls

>>48134268
fuck off ultras are pretty balanced in 30k

When he said "deepstrike special units" I assumed he was talking about the Damocles as a "unit that had something to do with deep strike" as opposed to terminators who have a single option to deepstrike: the Orbital Assault RoW.
Because Terminators don't deepstrike in 30k most of the time.

>Because Terminators don't deepstrike in 30k most of the time.
Oh yea, I always forget about that.
>>
>>48134458
>>48134458
I agree. I think the favouritism only really shines through with Guilliman.

Legion wargear on its own are par

Rules par

Special units are par with the amazing suzies dragged down my locutarus and fulmentarus.

Characters pretty good

Guilliman godlike

RoW decidedly awful
>>
>>48134532
It's alright. I bet IW/DG All Termie Orbital Assault force may be all sorts of fun.

Thousand Sons. Hue.

Now, I'm not an English speaker, but I'l guessing there are mistakes here and there?
I mean, the text makes perfect sense to me.
>>
>>48134603
No it's about ultramarines and word bearers.

And even then, that was GW's doing, not FW. And in case you forgot, FW, not GW, is the one in charge of 30k
>>
>>48134649
Look at how many times they misspell Mor Deythan.
>>
>>48134583

I think the RoW can become amazing when used in the context of a Roman legion themed list with counter-attack power sword breachers who use the first turn or so to belt forward with the run bonus and BS 2 laser destroyers/Fullimentari sweeping the skies clear

Not necessarily the strongest, but holy hell it could be fun
>>
>>48134034
Because they haven't released Dorn yet.
