Yes, but it's nowhere near as prominent as in MtG and is more similar to the BW era Pokemon sets, you actually have to look into it and read the (unreleased outside of Japan) guidebooks that go into the lores.

But even then it's a bunch of different stories that don't even take place in the same universe, the oldest one being the story of Gigobyte but the one with the most cards and time devoted to it being the Duel Terminal storyline.

Well, I got a Monarch deck from by brother for an early birthday present. That's how desperately he wanted me back to the game. Been tweaking it a little and tomorrow's game night, so we'll see how it goes.

I've always liked the Monarchs, but they were kinda hard to get back when I was younger and really into the game. We couldn't just buy a pile of singles and call it a day, had to trade everything. Anyway, it's a fun deck because you get to lock down the opponent's Extra Deck and it's simple yet strong - perfect for someone who's been on a hiatus. The only downside is the occasional brick.

the worst part about current meta is that you can't build a deck that actually reflects your personality and still be competitive. Sure there have always been the specific game winning strategies for tournaments, but you could almost always find multiple ways of setting them up. The game was slow when everyone ran the same fucking deck. GOATs, Chaos, Perfect circle, etc. Game didn't get "fast" until Glad beasts, lightsworn and teleDAD.

The game peaked recently CROS/CORE format when there was a huge plethora of meta decks to play that could fit any taste and easily compete if you were good.

Yugioh's niche is that it's the fast card game compared to standard magic.
