First attempt at making a Noise Marine, still filling in the joints with leadbelcher and nuln oil.

This is weird, wild stuff, Ed. I did not know this!

Very cool. Crazy, but nonetheless cool!

>>

It certainly is, I had a bunch of old, very poorly painted marines who hadn't seen the field it at least a decade.
So I stripped them and am trying to make them both interesting and useful.
>>

The Snake to the side in the photo is from Tales of War, as 'Snakier'. They also have a Grey Fox/Cyborg ninja model.

I use both for Infinity, as there's special operatives AND cyborg ninjas involved.

I'd put some spikes on him, just to be safe. Or maybe something more Slaanesh-y...like those giant puffy scarf-things glam rockers wear.

Or a mohawk. Slaanesh loves mohawks.

>>
Any thoughts if they bring back kasrkins or if they will ever look the same/as good? God I just got into the hobby and I realized I can never really field them
>>
>>47984378
Of course you can. They're just a storm trooper model like the new ones.

I still use the 2nd edition ones.
>>
>>47984474
True. I just don't seem the in fluff much anymore or maybe I don't look hard enough. And kasrkins have that distinct model to me I would rather not use new storm troopers. I wish GW would make new plastics ones..
>>
>>47984668
scions have replaced storm troopers in the fluff for trademark purposes
>>
>>47984693
The have replaced storm troopers with scions for copyright reasons, yes. Kasrkins are definitely a signature 40k unit and fluff though if they wanted to at all they probably could do it and slap some CR on there.
>>
>>47984668
I think because they moved away from being specifically cadia focused.
It's not like the fluff means much anyway. It's intentionally full of massive holes so you can do your own thing.

Just buy up old metals. It's likely cheaper than most of the new kits anyway.
>>
>>47984724
Really cheaper? Might have to then. Idk how metal is cheaper but I'm not complaining
>>
>>47984724
Agreed they do do that on purpose, I love 40k fluff personally Ive followed it for about 6 years but I just had the time and money to get into it so imagine my dismay. Oh well
>>
>>47984743
Because it will all be second hand stuff. Just keep an eye on ebay etc.
Metals are a dream to strip. Just look for lot buys at good prices.

Since the newer ranges have crazy fucked pricing anything from ~6-10 years ago seems incredibly cheap.

They moved away from metal to maximise profits, not to deliver cheaper goods.
>>
>>47983428
Don't think I don't notice Snake there.
>>
>>47984668
The new Stormtrooper models are sick. Kasrkins are cool, but the Scions are one of the best infantry kits GW has.
>>
>>47985120
I like them too. They look really chaos-y to me though. If I was going to use them it would be as renegades.

My favourites are the really old plastic ones and the metals that followed those.

If plastic try leaving it overnight in a cup of degreaser or alchool. Depending on how much glue you used it might not come off, but will weaken enough to try to pry apart with an hobby knife.

>>
>>47990053
>Will it cure if I leave it alone for a few days/weeks?
Not likely. Most resins/two part epoxies dont need air or light to cure, and the product has probably had sufficient time to cure by now if it was going to. They probably got the mix off and put too little of the catalyst in.
>>

The only thing it's missing is the terribly placed fuel barrels all over everything.
I think the FW hellhound solved that whole problem better by just having one big tank in the back instead of two huge ones over the entire length of the chassis.
So go buy yourself a kinder ei, enjoy the chocolate and build a nice tank.

Eh, I always have some on my table, I'm used to fixing my minis, even enjoy it. But we are talking about loosing some texture on whole parts of the mini, like some big parts of a 10 cm tail here. It's pretty alright. I've always had a soft spot for kitbashes, what with playing Necromunda, and that one works pretty well. He needs to stop skipping leg day, though.

On the painting, you suffer from two problems: poor highlighting and too many colours. For the former, watch Duncan or any number of videos on YouTube. For the latter, do the same on colour theory or wait until someone inevitably posts that infograph in a /wip/ thread.

With the nice constructive criticism or if the way, let me make one thing really fucking clear to you: Unless your phone is from before the fucking smartphone era, you have no excuse. I'm on my phone is just laziness, willful ignorance or idiocy. There's literally hundreds of image editing softwares on all app stores as of today. Mephiston Red for the red, then? Or do you need to go darker?

I've also heard that painting red under gold makes the gold better. Also heard the same thing about brown (or, at least, that it works better than black, which is more suited to silver or gunmetal). I'll try the brown out on the parts of my librarian I want to be gold.

So, we have red accents, and gold with brown or possibly red underneath. I think that says you're going to want a warm white, built up from some vaguely brown off-white colour... or at the very least, darkened with a wash like Seraphim Sepia.

>>
>>48002270
Gorilla glue tends to expand
>>
>>48002270

Actual gorilla glue is not meant for models. It's a wood glue and will expand.
>>
>>48002270

You're not supposed to use that glue, and it requires you to clamp the pieces together in a vice for several hours with enough force to break your models. Don't just use random shit on your models, use some kind of super glue or plastic glue.
>>
>>48002315
>>48002326
>>48002344
You see, this is why I ask before I try things.

What kind of solutions do you guys go for when you've got tiny, unpinnable attachment points on long extended limbs that get torqued a lot in transit / play simply due to how far away from the attachment they are. I'm tired of having to reglue this stuff constantly.

Model is metal, by the way. Mentioned it before, but it's worth reiterating, because it makes the problem so much worse. If it were plastic I'd plastic glue that fucker and be done with it.
>>
>>48002436

Either extremely thin drill bit and pin with wire, and/or buy a high quality custom cut foam storage.

If it's a serious problem and you're not going to do either of these, what most people do in this scenario would be replacing the offending appendage entirely either with a simple brass rod in the case of straight pieces like antennas or pole weaons, or a piece of wire and bend to shape and greenstuff over, or use a greenstuff tendril making tool in the case of organics.

If you're looking at compressors made for airbrushes, pressure isn't really something to worry about; thinned acrylics want to operate @ 20 psi max, and airbrush compressors generally top out at @ 60. The bigger the better for the tank; my 1 1/2 gal generally gives me 1-2 mins spray time before the compressor kicks in.

First time painter, bought a box of Gretchin and painted them all. Do you guys mind critiquing these? The bases are plain, I know but i'm not really sure on what to do with them. Having trouble making their backs and arms look nice during highlighting.
>>
>>48003302
For a first time painter these are actually pretty good, a lot of the issues you're having with the arms and backs will really fade with time, you just need to get more comfortable with how far you can go with the brush along the raised edges of the muscles on a mini's back and arms.

The bases could use a little color, nothing too fancy maybe a drybrush or two of either a brown green or grey depending on what you want them to look like they're standing on. That, and painting the rim of their bases either black/ brown or green would pretty much tidy these guys up nicely.

I will have to say I like where you chose to put the Red on some of these models. The grot with the six-shooter is looking really good.

Other than that, just remember to check over your grots for little things (The top picture far left grot's teeth are still flesh colored, for instance). Other than that these guys are tabletop ready right now I would say.
>>
>>48003436
Thanks for the advice, I wasn't sure about those issues because people always seem to post really nice ones that seem perfect. Also I didn't notice the teeth, thanks.
>>
>>48002436
Unpinnable is a very strong term. What is the actual model?

You can get drill sets that go down to about .2mm.
>>
>>48003302
Great for a first try.

Be sure to fully clean you models beforehand, pretty sure I can see a sprue piece on the right one's hair.

Something I'd suggest is take your leather elements up to a much brighter highlight to get some more varience in there.
And as the other anon mentioned take those bases up a bit in brightness, paint the rim black and you could add some flock.

Otherwise quite a bit better than a number of people I play against.

Completely new to miniatures here. Assembled a few Infinity minis, have a color scheme picked out, ready to order paints. I'd like to attempt a fairly detailed job to try my hand at it and learn as much as I can. I haven't touched a paintbrush since elementary school, is this a terrible idea?

Is it possible to get decent results for low/highlights by mixing black/white with my colors or am I a dumbass? Any other helpful tips?
>>
>>48004821

I wouldn't go low with mixing black but I'm sure it's possible. It's easier to start with a dark or average color then work up by mixing in more and more white as you go. That's what the majority of painters do.
>>
>>48004821

It depends on the look you want to achieve. Black/white desaturate colors, making them lose their luster. Obviously this works fine for grey tones but when you're doing red, for example, and you want a bright highlight? You're going to need an orange tint.

It's all about what kind of end result you have in mind. If you could find some examples of what you want to do, we can give you much more specific advice.

Do these bases look alright? I'm on the fence about the green. Also on the leather, do you mean like a sharp highlight or just all of it entirely? I've been using Mournfang Brown as a base and Skrag brown as a highlight
>>
>>48004882

Resize your photos. 5MB 5000 pixels is needlessly large. Your bases look fine. The dark mossy green is a bit muted and blends in with the mud a bit. You might want to try adding a little bit more darker green in.

The rocks look a bit too smooth. You might want to use more angular rocks which will have sharp edges that catch drybrushed highlights VERY well and look great. Or if you want round river stones, you might want to add some stipling or a more bluish tone to the rocks.
>>
>>48004821
Your hands will shake more than you can imagine. Take that into account, thin your paints and correct mistakes

#1 tip: use a palette, preferably a wet palette. If you paint straight from the pots, thinning is a huge pain, as is mixing. I use a ghetto wet palette made from paper towels, baking paper, and a plastic tray. There's no excuse not to.

As for starting with something super fiddly and detailed, there's nothing wrong with that, but I'd start simpler if I were you. These things are tiny. Even a fairly simple figure has a lot of detail on it.

Mixing your own shading and highlighting colors is an excellent idea - you can make in infinite number of intermediate colors and make all your transitions as smooth as you want. As for using black and white for that, yeah, it works, but like other anons have said, it desaturates (which is not necessarily a bad thing). Personally I tend to use a darker or lighter version of the base color, but then I've got a million paints.

Pic related is an example of my work, so you can decide whether you want to listen to me. Not going to win any awards, but I think I'm decent enough.

Do I use dettox (or is it dettol?) to get paint off minis if I live in the UK? Can I use it for plastic or just metal?

My tip: use isopropyl alcohol 96 proof and above.

Doesn't harm plastic at all and even strips primer. Downside: it's not cheap but you can reuse it.

Use Dettol brown solution (picture related) you can pick it up in most places in the uk

don't mix it with water just pour it and the minis into a glass jar wait 8-24 hours then use a colander to separate the minis and the dettol which you can reuse , then sacrifice a tooth brush and some kitchen roll to literally brush off the paint which now does not stick to the model you may need to use a paper clip or something small to reach into small areas then once you are done removing the paint bathe the minis in soapy water to remove the smell.

This is the method i use , it works for me and i'm sure there are other ways to do it.
>>
>>48006779
You can use methylated spirits to clean the minis(dunk the tooth brush in the spirit) after this, try not to let the dettol get on your skin. This process will make a great deal of mess.

So I tried greenstuff (50/50, some times 70% blue part) and the result is too rubbery for my taste. How's milliput? I heard is too brittle to do anything that has details, I also heard that combination of both is (50/50) is perfect.

I'm planning on making a dice box. It will be dual use so I can just leave the dice in it at the end of the day and carry it out. So there will be an acrylic top that slides off and attaches to the bottom.
The whole thing otherwise will be made of wood with a foam and felt lined interior. i want to also burn the Aquila logo into one of the sides like some kind of shipping crate brand.
Though I'd like to add in the old school art in some way. originally I was thinking of finding an old box and having the acrylic top just have the face of the box glued and sealed to it, but i'm not too sure about that

I have sonic weapon kits on order from GW, these guys are intended to be ablative wounds for the blastmaster and the marines actually upgraded to have sonic blasters.
Well, and satisfy my desire to paint bright discordant patterns.
Speaking of trying again, here's prewash attempt 2.
With better striping and thinner paints, though the yellow is still being a real bitch in that regard.

WAYYYYYYY to hard for your skill.

Try easy thigns like drybrush etc.

Theres no gradient anywhere so it looks so fucked up, but you probably wont be able to do them ever.
At least try that with an airbrush, because with a brush You are asking for trouble

Also i don't know what the fuck were you thinking by """""""""highlighting"""""""""" the back of the kneepads with literally the darkest color on the model.

The yellow shows the color beneath so it means you don't thin your paint.
Try with really easy tutorial or try the normal pinkish color.

Neat Idea but wow that execution. Please just hire a commission painter.
>>
>>48019604
>WAYYYYYYY to hard for your skill.
>Theres no gradient anywhere
Ain't that the truth. Yeah I had many new ideas I tried out on this guy. I think gradients are out.

The back of the kneepads were completely unfinished in that picture, they were painted leadbelcher and then given some nuln oil which looks better... but remains doing the exact thing you said, but I can't bring myself to give what's supposed to be a moving mechanical surface wild colors. They're (along with the boltgun) the one thing supposed to be plain on the model.
And the yellow is still being a bitch. Still trying to find a good balance with thinning it but even my next attempt has it just gooped on it.
Speaking of which I'd love to hear what you think about attempt number two here: >>48018680
