What is the most /tg/ game on Steam, and why is it Trails in the Sky?

I'd say it's Alpha Protocol.
You know, actual roleplaying without complete railroading.

And as broken as most homebrews
>>
>>47976557
Technically, it's Knights of Pen and Paper, since you play as actual fa/tg/uys.

I'm having lots of fun with hands of fate, the card system is very rad, the combat doesn't feel quite adequate, isn't bad but I feel another kind could be better.
Other games like it? With the FF vibe and choose your own adventure style.

I'm enjoying this bara orc game to an undue degree.

Spooky as fuck. What is the game like?
>>
Looking for recommendations for atmospheric horror games and stealth games. Anything that hasn't been turned into an action schlock.

Also strong narrative point and click adventure games.
>>
>>47977946
Amnesia for horror, I'd suggest FEAR too if you didn't say that you don't want action, because both the gameplay and horror elements are top notch if you like the horror style.

For stealth you can't go wrong with splinter cell chaos theory.

The Overlord series are not the greatest games, but they are very entertaining, and right now you can get all three games (one is an expansion of the first game) for about 6 dollars

E.Y.E. is hard to explain. It was made by frenchies who probably spent most of their time smoking weed, but ended up producing a stellar world with some interesting mechanics. Now, mind you that it is made on ye olde Source engine, so it's going feel outdated and a bit clunky.
The main deal with the game, and why it gets so much praise, is because of the world. Pic related, you can get killed hacking a door because it fights back. Mainly though, it's a big organization, E.Y.E, loosely based on the Imperium of Man/Space Marines, that's split into two factions: the Jian and the Culters. The two don't get along, and there's a fair bit of mysticism involved in the game as a whole.

it's p. good though

As a brief list of stuff in the "came for some quick action, surprisingly stayed for the plot" :

Hotline miami 1+2 (you wouldn't imagine but characters and events are quite fleshed out, lots of little pieces here and there you can put together to get to the bigger picture)
Zeno Clash 1+2 (world building has some nice elements)
Shadow Warrior (the whole backstory between the deities was pretty good)
Spec Ops: The Line (everything goes to shit and it's all your fault +some meta stuff thrown in)

It's more of a single-player game. Stats are rolled at the start, then enhanced by spending Brouzouf. There are no "essential" mods to my knowledge.

I think I'm gonna pick up Dragon's Dogma based on recommendations from this thread.

What's the best way to play through it blind? Is it like NWN where I get fucked over dialogue-wise if I don't put X in certain stats or whatever?

Any decent games with character building where you play as a robot or cyborg? I already have E.Y.E. and need to play though it.

Tex Murphy, though I don't know if Steam sells it. If only /tg/ had a thread for the GOG summer sale.
>>
>>47980017
Stats are all automatic, and they're strictly combat related. There are very few meaningful dialogue choices. It's all about the sense of adventure, the combat, and making your own story.

These videos are what pulled me into the game, and they give you a good sense of what it is without spoiling things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrCiV4LOYk4

It definitely isn't the most /tg/ game on sale, but the Trails series could easily be made into a decent homebrew with a few tweaks. Setting itself lends to easy development of quests and plots. Shit, the Bracer Guild is halfway between international freelance police force and professional sidequesters.
>>
>>47978893
It's got coop and should be played in coop so that you and your friends can spout inane bullshit quotes from the game at each other and laugh at the nonsensical plot.
>>
>>47977840
>>47978020
Pathologic's probably one of the more unique games you'll play and I say that knowing full well how overfuckingused that statement is.

Made by a bunch of batshit auteur slavs, you play as one of three healer-types who travels to a strange Russian town in the sticks only to find the place is hit by an epidemic that seems bizarrely supernatural. You've got 12 days to figure out what the fuck is going on, also to not die. You need to manage hunger, infection, exhaustion, fight off robbers and arsonists, keep important NPCs alive because they can and WILL die if you fuck things up, and the story will go on regardless of how bad you fuck up and how many people die.

I can all but guarantee the plot will be unlike anything you've ever seen. That said it's clunky as fuck, it's dated, the HD upgrade makes the atmosphere real nice and the translation actually legible, but the graphics are still ass and combat is a nightmare.

It's a flawed masterpiece in my opinion, if you like it you'll like it you'll be lost in it for days and probably won't come out quite the same way again. I know that sounds like wank but if it's your jam, it won't even be exaggeration.

I'd also recommend The Void by the same devs but it got yanked from steam a while back due to fuckery.
>>
get behind it and strike the tail!
>>
>>47978893
I told you not to make waves.

you level up by killing shit, it's kind of important that you go into the game with 3 or 4 people though the game supports up to 36 players in coop

I killed my mentor yet I am not his murderer.

Repostan my recommendation for "Age of Barbarian" - http://store.steampowered.com/app/402880/
Not part of the sale, but only about $15 and, as a love-letter to a certain 1982 Ahnuld movie and "Barbarian 2 - the Dungeons of Drax", probably as /tg/ related as you're ever going to get.

Pic related: the playable characters are Rahaan the barbarian, and Sheyna the once-princess-turned-slave-turned-warrior. Each has their own reasons to seek REVENGE! on Necron, the foul necromancer, and will leave a long, wide trail of slaughtered and dismembered foes on the road to his sky-fortress.
(Be warned: I've found that the keyboard controls on this one are a little janky, so it might play a little better if you use a controller.)
>>
>>47981366
My legs are OK
>>
>>47981437
Looked it up just now, apparently the devs (Ice-Pick Lodge) didn't actually even put it up on steam, their old publisher just did it without asking, and somehow or other the publisher got to keep rights to it so the whole thing was out of Ice-Pick's hands. Which lead to a clusterfuck of a legal situation and the game getting pulled, though people like me who bought it before can still play it.

I believe it's up on GOG though. One of the most interesting games I've played, I'd highly recommend it if you like weird/unusual stuff/something different.

Stardew Valley or This War of Mine, /tg/?

Both are suitably groggy to pass Commander Keen muster. Both tell stories MUCH bigger than implied. One is a pseudo-platformer survival / combat sim and the other is a classic 2d Zelda-style lite RPG fucking a farm sim. I'm torn, and can fit either in my budget.

Whole series slid downhill after that.

A blind run is totally possible and you won't lock yourself into a corner, but there are a lot of side missions and tiny story tidbits you'll miss.

Just one tip: if you get an important story mission item, try duplicating it at the Black Cat. You might find other uses for it.
>>
>>47982503
Stardew Valley is a Harvest Moon clone, plain and simple. It's fine at what it does but if it passes CK muster, it does so only because /v/ loathes flavor-of-the-moth games, and not on its own virtues.

Harvest Moon is deceptively /tg/ flavored in how well it captures roleplaying.

You live your character's every waking moment. You choose how you spend your time, how you make a living, who you befriend, who you marry. Basically everything is up to you, without being a completely barren sandbox. There are NPCs, storylines, events, etc

It may not be ye olde epic quest, but it is roleplaying to the core.
>>
>>47982959
It's also fun and satisfying. All the satisfaction of a hard day's work without actually having to do any of the work yourself!

Gonna repost my recommendation for La-Mulana. It's only barely /tg/-related but if you want to finish it without a walkthrough you're going to have to draw maps and take notes. Gives it a neat old-school dungeon crawl vibe that way without specifically being a dungeon crawler.

Legend of Grimrock!
A throwback of the CRPGs of old ala Dungeon Master and Wizardry. Where movement is tilebased and there are puzzles and secrets around every corner. If you want to experience an "old school" dungeon crawler then this is the game for you. This game also comes with a map editor and is fully intagrated with steam workshop so there are a ton of player made dungeons out there waiting to be explored I recommend the "Tomb of Zarthos" myself. Think you are a man? Well turn on hardcore mode and grab a pencil and some graph paper pussy. Those dungeons ain't gonna map themselves. I sure hope you have a compass and plenty of torches.
You will die to spidersIn the dark. You have been warned.

Now buy this game.

EO isn't tedious because it's a FP-TB-DC, it's tedious because Japanese game developers that don't exponentially pad out gameplay with grinding are executed.
I'm sure that somewhere, whether realized or still-nascent, the idea has/could be executed in a way that could appeal even to me; all I can definitively say is that I haven't seen it.

youre full of it or the dev. this game is not worth 15 dollars. the gameplay is clunky, level design average, and its overall just meh. its certainly a good milestone but theres alot to improve for the devs latest game
>>
>>47985419
To be fair, it is a revamped version of a game first released in 2011, and the way I hear it Crian Soft is basically a one-man show. I've logged about forty hours in-game, completing both character storylines, and now practicing my head-chopping on Rogak is pretty good stress relief.

Maybe my standards are low because I haz no moneyz and I just don't buy games often - hell, I've never owned a console! - but I thought $15 was a reasonable price for what I got, especially since the average turnaround on bugfixes since release has been less than two days.
(It certainly beats the shit out of paying $75 for the same game from a big studio that takes a *month* to patch a reported glitch and asks another $15 to unlock the second character path as DLC.)

Kharak is good. HW Remastered gets continuing support, not long ago they released an update that among other things brought back formations, greatly improved flight pathing and redesigned the projectile system to use true ballistics rather than statistics. It also has a huge mod community, there's Complex and Tactical Fleet Simulator which re-balance and quadruple the unit options, and a TC mod for pretty much every major Sci-Fi franchise.

Though speaking of that the nudity is pretty casual both ways, while you might come across countless shirtless hairy orcs that are built like brick shithouses and incubuses trying to kill you while sporting only a grin and a giant throbbing erection you also encounter female demons as naked as the day they were birthed from the sordid pits of hell and other female demihumans that bare all their naughty bits to your view.
Its kind of refreshing that none of this is censored.

Time to shill for dominions 4 again.
It's only vaguely /tg/ related due to all the mythology in it but it's fun and you occasionally get to have crazy shit occuring, like a souped up vampire hero fighting off angels and skeletons and mages and shit on his own. Pic related.

The game was very balanced betweent the smooth, aggressive and professional approachs. In the end, it really paid to adapt to the person you're speaking with.
If you anger Marburg enough, you can taunt him out of cover and kill him in Rome.
Not as satsifying as making him go rogue in the Alpha Protocol facility, but still nice.

>Look, old man, you can talk big all you want, but at the end of the day? You're just a corporate drone collecting a paycheck. You answer to a cardboard cutout half your age with the fashion sense of a screaming child. He spends thousands on his fucking hair. Wait...wait...
Holy cows, that is actually my pic and blood marshall.

The blood marshall was only thing keeping army of birds/angels from killing my god and taking my capital.
After throwing an army of around 300 mages, (those mages summoned all the skeletons in pic) the bird player gave up the idea of killing me with force and focused on remaining major players instead. On the phone so can't post any pics.

Anyway Dom4 is worth of your space credits and very tg indeed.

I REALLY want to play a new RPG /tg/. Idk what I want though.

I want fantasy, I want open-world adventure. I kinda want dark and gritty. I also sorta want nautical pirate adventures. Does such a game exist??

I DID look at Elder Scrolls online but I've heard a bit more bad than good.
>>
I'm liking Stranger of Sword City. A dungeon crawler in the vein of Wizardry. You can add your own character art, so with a bit of editing you can make anyone or anything into your party.

Not to say the default artstyle is bad, it's actually very nice. There's also a more anime artstyle for characters/NPCs, but I didn't like it too much.

they actually fixed HW? Oh thank fuck, I got so frustrated over it. Gonna be able to actually go back to it and not want to rip it apart.

Adding on to Kharak, I've been enjoying it. The giant sand carriers are awesome, good design on how fighter craft work, really been enjoying the single player, it seems like there are fair design differences between factions and they maintain their faction identity while still using the same basic unit design. I've been enjoying it, though I wish completing the mission objective didn't cause the mission to end then and there.

Darkest Dungeon.

Fun, atmospheric as hell dungeon crawler with a kind of lovecraft-lite feel to it.

'lite' in that there is a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel and the monsters are horrific but can be killed, it's more on the Conan side of the Mythos than the Lovecraft side.

I really like it, great class system, fun gameplay, very good looking and great sound design, and it does the X-Com thing of having tactical missions and base management without either feeling like it detracts from the other.

maaaaannnn, i played risen 2 and i was not overjoyed. i might have been missing something, but it just felt lacking in fun somehow.
>>
>>47990585

Risen 1 was made to be Gothic - like. And it was amazing, up until the "go forth and kill" phase every Gothic had.

Risen 2 was different from Risen 1. Fights became easier, atmosphere leaked away, everything became less fun.

Try Risen 1. Seriously.

>>

Hard mode is hard for the first few levels but since it gives you double gold and exp you shoot up in levels quickly enough that it actually makes the game easier than normal mode.
It also increases stagger resistance so warriors are even more useless.

Hardmode is for NG+ in Dragon's Dogma, Anon. No shame in going normal your first run.
>>
>>47988310
Hard mode was so much fun, but you're better off being a ranged character and leaving the heavy tanking to your unkillable pawn you can revive when shit goes south. I also think that hard mode only multiplies damage done to you, meaning pawns are more survivable anyway. When I realized that, I went from play not!Guts with a kidney-stabbing loli sidekick to power-archer with Warrior-loli; I miss taking out an entire health bar with a single warrior skill, but I like surviving combat a lot more, plus it's sort of cool to watch a little girl in plate armor swing a hammer bigger than herself.
>>
>>47991327
Holy shit yes Geneforge is great. I'm partway through the first game and it's excellent.

I can also second This War of Mine, Dominions 4, Alpha Protocol and E.Y.E.
>>
>>47989739
Stuff like that was definitely the strenght of Alpha Protocol. I just wish it'd have been more about that side of things and less about sneaking and fighting.

That conversation with Leland towards the end when you've played your cards right, though, with Leland all smug as shit but obviously unaware of some of the things you've done and set in motion...it was incredibly satisfying.
>>
>>47991498
Can't agree. Sure , more bullshit all over the screen from your allies, but easier resurrection and (hopefully) higher DPS.
>>
>>47992495

Hardmode is weird because you get increased EXP for defeating your opponents, meaning that you start off getting oneshotted by goblins but then suddenly you are so overleveled that the game normalizes.

Pity. I liked getting oneshotted by goblins.

I picked up Rogue Legacy, because i hadn't allready, and i tried it.

What in the holy fuck is wrong with that game? I feel as if I did something to offend it's programmers. The game is bullshit of a calibre i cannot properly express, and requires i become more "gud" than i ever have before.

In about an hour and a half, i hit my skill ceiling, and found myself completely unable to afford any further upgrades to my castle. the Heroes feel like wet tissue paper. i encountered more rooms that were absolute bullshit than ever before in my life.

Also, despite the controls being fast and responsive, they start out intrinsically handicapped: you suck. No two ways around it.

I get the feeling that, if i could only have a few more HP, or a longer invincibility frame, or a Downward thrust that actually goes all the way down to the ground instead of being a half-second poke in mid-air, then I could enjoy it more... but with the castle pricing itself far outside of my meagre skill level, I'm just going to curse it.

Jesus fucking christ anon
>>
>>47997663
I anticipated people would tell me to "get gud" and attempted to circumvent it.

I used to be good. I beat Battletoads without a game genie. I stomped airman and beat Little Nemo and collected every treasure in Ducktales. I learned to platform in Super Mario Brothers on the NES. I'm old. I long ago passed my peak. and playing that game with a keyboard is just infinitely frustrating. ESPECIALLY with how many of the rooms are just flat out designed to kill you.

On one play, I paid charon what few coins i had left, walked through the first room with the journal, walked into the next room and- immediately got hit by an overhead trap, then a giant sized knight, who, by any sense of scale, had to at least be a mini-boss rushed over and smashed me. and then i was hit by the overhead trap again, because they fire that fast, and i died. I died in the second room to the first enemy because the goddamn game decided that every ceiling tile in room #2 needed to be a fireball launcher, and that the only enemy in that room should be a mini-boss.
>>
>>47997838
I am garbage at games, anon, but Rogue Legacy was not unfairly difficult. I don't remember ever getting hit by a trap upon entering a room.

What was this "overhead" trap? And minibosses only appear in dead end rooms. It's literally impossible for the first room to be a miniboss room.

>>47997917
the overhead trap was a fireball launcher that launched fireballs straight down. There was a bank of 8 of these, a very narrow center area with no overhead fireball launchers, and then another bank of 8 of them before the end of the room.

The monster in the room killed me, and, since i have no familiarity with how this game functions, the best way i could describe it, would be as a giant version of a common gray knight. except it used a dash attack that you don't see on the regular knights, and was using a different weapon, a spear i believe. It was not kind to me.
>>
>>47997987
I didn't take it, but I'd say somewhere south of New Vegas, maybe southwest heading parallel to the mountains.
>>
>>47997927
That sounds amazing. Totally something I'd want to do, but for some reason, my PC and Fallout 3 can't agree, no matter how many fixes I try to look up.
>>
>>47998036
I don't know why it wouldn't work, mine worked just fine, though mostly I play TTW which is technically playing Fallout 3's assets through New Vegas.
>>
>>47998024
I thought so too, but the only overhead highways are close to vegas iirc

>>47998036
Tale of Two Wastelands runs through NV's executable, so if your PC can run that you're fine to run TTW
>>
>>47998076
>>47998079

It has something to do with Fallout 3 not being able to run on anything bigger than a dual-core, IIRC, which is supposedly a simple fix in one line of the code. Tried that, as well as about half-a-dozen other things, and none of it was working.

However, since Tale of Two Wastelands runs off of New Vegas, then that's perfect for me, since New Vegas works just fine on my PC. Thanks for letting me know.
>>
>>47998005
Spear knights are just another generic enemy.

My friend and I both played it at the same time, and he was able to make progress much more quickly than I because he was gud enough to not need to grind.
>>
>>47998126
Yeah, check it out, I love the mod and as long as you have all the DLC for both games, then it should be fine.

Mods for New Vegas also mostly carry over into Fallout 3's game area, so armor mods and new weapons will show up on those characters.

Nevada Skies works without conflict, which makes the game a lot prettier, but NMC's texture pack needs to be run through a fan made script in order to make it replace stuff in the Capitol Wasteland as well.

Might seem daunting but the instructions are very clear and I got it to work first time with about a minute's effort.

The game is so goddamn pretty with the right mods installed, high-rez everything!
>>
>>47998193
Really modding Fallout TTW for me has become like a hobby in and of itself, like a banzai tree I've groomed to perfection and occasionally mess with again.

Finally I think I've reached as good as it's going to get, with hundreds of weapons added in, each with proper reload animations and using the correct ammunition types, tons of clothing added in and every texture replaced and polished to look absolutely gorgeous.

Wait people find Rogue Legacy hard? Sure it's not an easy game but I never in my wildest dreams imagined someone making a huge rant about how hard it was for them.
Do you just not play 2-D action platformers? How can you start the game as bad as you claim you did?

So... This is a game where I can play a mostly naked orcish shaman?

But what about the gameplay, the trailers all just show a bunch of sprites rushing about fighting at high speeds, what is the game about really?
>>
>>47998652
You can play an entirely naked orcish shaman, if you like.

Combat is fast-paced for a turn-based game, but quite simple. Story also is simple, but fun and interesting so far. It's about low-lifes and scum doing low-life scummy things, mostly. You have a stronghold, which isn't super deep but is nice. It isn't the game if you look like megamind and want to train your brain in pursuit of psychic powers, but there's still challenge to it, and it's consistently well-polished and fun.

>Usually Turn Based Games with heavy strategic elements. Dungeon Crawling is common but not necessarily required.
>Stories tend to be in depth and are at their best when they have a lot of reactivity

Unpopular opinion but I think Beyond Earth is a good game. Not a great one mind you, it feels like a Civ V reskin, but I found it fun. It is vastly disappointing however, when compared with Alpha Centauri (My all time favorite game) as I was expecting Alpha Centauri 2.

Also a lot of people feel like it doesn't have any lore, it does, but all the lore is hidden in the Civopedia.

Very good played it in early access. Don't get tricked into trying to make money purely on shipping it's boring and inefficient. The point is to explore and find cool stories, you will be rewarded. Or die.

Also pick the money thing as your first goal the others are much harder and require some knowledge of the game

>>
>>48004267
I can't stand their art style so my opinion might be flawed but i found their turn based system to be shit. Its basically 1 of your guys - 1 of their guys in sequence. If only 1 enemy is left (say a boss for example) he will attack all the time while your characters will have to wait until its their turn again.
>>
>>47976605
Alpha Protocol is great.keep in mind it has been on sale for $1 in the past.

My recommendation for this sale is:

>Legend of Eisenwald

A very cozy medieval rpg with tactical turn based combat in an extra arena (kinda like Heroes of MM).
Instead of stacks of soldiers/monsters you have only a few dudes and you can equip each of them and level them up on different paths.
It does an awesome job to portrait a (fictional) medieval Germany. The story gets very interesting after you discover a few things. It also is quite challenging and you have to read quest texts and listen to rumors and hints to figure out what to actually do.
I liked it alot. The devs are awesome too.

STALKER is pretty great.

Great atmosphere, great gameplay and exploration. I really like that it manages to do an RPG like mechanic for advancing, but because there is no XP or actual leveling up, each fight's reward is simply whatever loot you get from that encounter, or just plain not being dead.

Overall it's a very gripping, powerful experience that feels very satisfying to me, especially when you get more powerful in the later game but you're never out of danger. I advise getting a nice modpack like the Super Modpack or one of a few others to overhaul the graphics and replace the gun models with realistic, properly animated ones.

Legend of Grimrock - A modern take on the "old school style of CRPG's"
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Combine Dark Souls with Shadow of the Colossus and this is what you get.
>>
>>48006463
anything by spiderweb software can run on a particularly meaty calculator.

you're gonna need to like CRPS though.

Avernum is basically being cast into the underdark, sans drow, and learning to survive.

Geneforge is about being a magical mad scientist.

Nethergate is about being Celts/Romans and adventuring.

Avadon is about being a magical spec ops soldier for a alliance of sorts.

all of them have in depth story lines with branching trees and unique endings. Though some games are better on the ending front than others.

Eversion is free if you poke around enough, but good enough to be worth money. It doesn't have spoilers on its steam page, incidentally.

CoC:Dark Corners of the Earth is 10/10 atmospheric, worth way more than what it's on for. (Though it will need the odd patch to get it completable, it's a shame what happened to the game.)

Anyone know much about Magicka 2?

Not that guy, and I've never gotten very far into Geneforge (things keep coming up every time I try to play, leaving me lost when I get back to the game 2 months later), but I dig it because it lets you go through the game solo, or with allies and summoned minions. It's also got some interesting plot shit going on involving how your racist, in-power magician's group responds to a magically engineered species is found flourishing without any assistance from you. Add to that exploring a decrepit island and it's my jam.

I can really recommend Valkyria Chronicles to fans of good tactical games with a fairly unique gameplay take, colourful characters (& waifus), fun story and good attack of opportunity systems.

Well then, I can recommend you some comfy games.

>Prison Architect
Surprise surprise it's about building a prison and thus the adorable little cartoon people occasionally shank each other in the shower or trade drugs among themselves, but it's a nice in-depth little building game and watching your little ant farm of a prison go about its day is good fun.

>Clockwork Empires
Steampunk colony builder where you have to survive against both nature and Lovecraftian hilarity (including your own people staring cults). Only just entered Beta, sweeping changes every month, a nice mellow game but quite unfinished yet.

>Cities: Skylines
It's what the new Simcity should have been but wasn't. Not the deepest city simulator (it lacks a little bit of that compared to Simcity 4 IMO), but it compensates for that with the planning challenge realistic traffic flow brings with itself, and it's a pretty relaxing experience.

The Tropico series is also pretty good. It's about running your own banana republic, with 3 and 4 being pretty much the same game, and 5 being something of a departure from the formula (while also being simplified a tad). 1 and 2 are old 2D goodness, with 2 being about running a pirate island rather than a banana republic.

>Banished
Build a village and don't starve to death. Not a very deep game, but a decent challenge and it's nicely atmospheric.

For games not about building, there's
>Enter the Gungeon
Part roguelite, part bullet hell about dungeon crawling in a hilariously gun-themed dungeon where even the enemies are things like sentient bullets armed with their respective weapons. The artstyle is pixel art of the good kind.

>Sunless Sea
Victorian London was stolen away by bats, and now resides on the shore of a great underground sea. Apart from that, life's quie normal. You've got a steamboat, a crew and hopefully courage in your heart, so go and sail the sea, discovering islands, trading in illicit goods and having text-based adventures ashore.

Honestly, there is way too much missing regarding the "peasant" aspect.
There are no watermills, no carts, no livestock beyond cows/chicken, meaning you can't use them to till your field etc.
I mean, yeah, sure, I get it, it's a single guy, and he's been focusing more on the "survival" aspect than "peasant" aspect, but there is so much potential.
