It doesn't mean they're retarded or suicide runners, OP. They know how invaluable even a rookie marine is and they put a lot of prep into any conflict they enter. Just as they don't wonder around a space hulk thinking they're invincible. I know there are fanatical chapters out there but there wouldn't be any chapters left if they generally didn't recognize a bad situation and bugged out.

Lack of fear doesn't mean lack of reasoning skills. They don't have to be afraid of death or bullets, but they know when things are fatal or should be avoided.

Your argument about evolution is flawed. Itching is a type of pain response, evolved to make humans notice when a venomous spider or similar is crawling on their skin. Someone who is immune to itching would not be in any immediate danger on the battlefield.

Space Marines do still feel fear, they break and fall back. It's rare, but it happens.

"And they shall know no fear" is more referring to the fact that Space Marines always rally after they break.

Plus, you know all that hypno-indoctrination probably takes the edge off of any emotion that isn't righteous smiting of the enemies of man.

This is not to be taken absoultely literally. Space Marines know fear, but they process it and react to it differently than normal humans. They can be afraid, but they cannot fall into blind panic.

They're still able to logically assess a tactical retreat if needed in place of real fear. Who you should really be worried about is the Death Korps of Kreig, who have the same "defect" without all the other cool stuff that allows a SM to survive a lack of fear.

Fear is an emotion, its primary effects are on heart rate, release of hormones etc.
A Space Marine's biology is altered to the point of being almost entirely artificial, and the benefits of fear (increased threat awareness, lack of need of sleep, increased strength) are incorporated optimally into their normal combat routines.
They really don't need fear, just the ability to assess risk. They already have all of the physiological benefits.
