I will always be partial to the BA as they were my first. I like the IF too because sieges. Executioners are my favourite if we're talking about niche chapters, they were absolutely badass during Badab.

Not many chapters that I really dislike honestly.

Pretty much every chapter without a real specialty likes to think of themselves as the dead 'ardest. I'm talking about people like Flesh Tearers, Carcharodons, Space Wolves, and Black Templars.

But the chapter which truly deserves that distinction, in my mind, are the descendants of Autek Mor himself: the Red Talons.

People no longer even remember what edge is actually like. The friendly fire incidents with the Dark Angels primarily just involve unimportant civilians or guardsmen, who typically turn out to be corrupted by Chaos in the first place. It's why the Ordo Malleus doesn't actually give a shit about the Dark Angels hunting the Fallen- they know about the Fallen, they just don't care because the First Legion constantly cleaning house often purges heretics that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

>>47945774
Legion of the Damned aren't a Chapter, and the Lamenters and Salamanders shouldn't be anything above the bottom bracket due to being failures as Space Marines. Also, Ultramarines should always be God-Emperor tier as per canon, they are more or less the best.

Because they're mentally retarded? Space Marines are one of the most rare resources of the Imperium. The Lamenters getting killed (and I mean killed, IIRC they lost a whole fucking company) just to save a couple hundred thousand civilians is gross misuse of resources that, should the Captain have survived, get him sanctioned by Chapter Command or the Administratum itself. The nature of warfare in 40k is that humans are expendable, Space Marines are not. Hundreds of thousands of humans, even millions, can easily be replaced in under a year due to the Imperium's birth rates leading to a population measured in quadrillions. If a Space Marine is fighting an unwinnable battle and sacrificing himself, he should be doing so for something that actually matters in the long term. Such as a planet with great strategic importance or a suicide mission to destroy a Necron Tomb World.

The Lamenters and Salamanders are failures because for all "muh feels" they generate, they ultimately are a waste and improperly expending themselves in a non-strategic fashion. Their lives are worth far more than the civilians they save, who probably will die shortly anyway due to being displaced from their homes and being rendered bottom-class civilians on any other planet they seek refuge on. The actions of the Lamenters, Sallies, and all other Chapters like them are in the end, pointless and wasteful. Mankind in 40k faces the literal apocalypse from Chaos, and numerous xenos threats. You do not die to save a single human, you die to buy your species more time until victory is possible.

Personally I can't understand how they haven't killed themselves after the embarassment of learning that a heretic ran their chapter for several centuries.

>>47948879
That's easy to do when the Ultramarines weren't doing it themselves. Such acts are pointless and no competent Chapter should engage in them, every Astartes lost in such operations is a crime to the Emperor for waste of good gene seed. The Lamanters especially are just morons so obsessed with their boner for heroics that they fail to see the bigger picture of the galaxy's dire state. Space Marines are not superheroes, they do not exist to save the little guy. They're living weapons made to prosecute the Emperor's will.

>invade craftworld for shits and giggles
>win, killing millions, minimum, of Eldar, including super units
>be counterattacked by Alaitoc in full force immediately after
>understrength chapter survives with three companies
>immediately reinforce Novamarines on Skyfall
>then, 62 years later, fight legions of daemons on Jollana with three companies
>win with GK help, 12 marines left
>13 years later have rebuilt enough to lose two Terminator squads trying to teleport into the World Engine
>by 999.M41 they've rebuilt again and are fighting Iyanden and Hive Fleet Leviathan at the same time

Of course, you prefer your chapters to die pointlessly and achieve nothing. See Lamenters.
>>
>>47949089
They mention a great deal of internal purging.
>>
>>47949241
Invaders are pretty fucking bro tier. See, THIS is what a real space marine chapter does. Even if the Lamenters died totally purging the Craftworld, that would mean exchanging a mere 1,000 Space Marines for millions upon millions of Eldar. Within a century or so a new Chapter could probably be created to fill the spot of the Invaders. Meanwhile the Eldar will never be replacing their numbers, and if you destroy the Craftworld Slaanesh destroys all their souls.

Nobody answers to the Ultramarines. Their successors respect their opinions.

Point fingers at the "We are de facto still a legion" Dark Angels. Or the "literally all our successors, even the renegades, plus alien races, minus the faggot ass Lamenters, came to help us" Blood Angels.

When practical shit hits the fan and Rowboats theoretical doctrine leaves the most holiest of Terra's defenseless.

Who were the first successor chapter ever, live close to Ultramar, take regular pilgrimages to see Guilliman, check their Codex against the Ultramarines' one to make sure they have no discrepancies, and even sometimes temporarily fill gaps in the Ultramarines' companies when they are understrength.

And still, it's not hinted to be more than hero-worship.

They are never portrayed as the best of the best, just the best that they could be and do what is expected of them.

Fuck yeah Lysander lost most of his company. Big Man Smurf lost his first company to a man, have you ever read about other marines fend off the space bugs with the ultramarines? Shit even Dante lost most of his whole chapter, twice none the less.

What has Lysander done to atone for his folly? A fuck ton is what. He even declined to be chapter master even though he had the renown, seniority, and experience because he's aware of his short comings.

If you want your chapter to be perfect, pick up a blue codex penned by Ward.

The Rock is actually more powerful. The Rock single handily fought off the entire Death Guard, including Typhus and his Flagship, and wasn't even powered up fully, but at a minimal stage. At full power the Rock easily possesses enough firepower to exterminate a whole Legion fleet. On top of that its Void Shields are strong enough that they tanked Exterminatus (making it therefore the most durable Imperial installation that we know of) without collapsing.

Didn't Cato Sicarius never smile again?

Didn't Ward also write the Grey Knights' first mentioned outright losses? To Huron Blackheart of all people?

Meanwhile you talk shit at people on the other side of the galaxy who were cut off, then busy fighting the Word Bearers, Night Lords, Alpha Legion, and everyone else? These including the DA who were fighting the same dudes?

Meanwhile the Wolves were literally on Terra and just fucked off because defense was gay.

Ward really gets too much shit, and I actually feel bad for the guy considering he probably got a fucking ulcer from all the hate mail and death threats received thanks to people taking their fictional space marines waaaay too seriously.

My bigger beef is with Cruddace. Talk about shoddy rules.

>Gabriel's final narration sounding more tired than anything else
The loyalists felt pretty damn guilty. They just didn't whine much about it because they were still busy fighting. We also don't entirely know what they're up to in Dawn of War 3. For all we know, they might all be on a penitent crusade to atone for the chapter civil war.
>>

That's how you deal with something like this. Purging the evil motherfuckers responsible, hunting down the enemies of the chapter and Imperium and replacing their head with bolter fragments, then doing your fucking job.

Not spend the next ten thousand years prioritizing your own guilt trips over actually doing your job as Astartes.

It's why I really like the Guardians of the Covenant, who finally realized that their ancestors did the right thing millennia ago and while it is still there responsibility to help clean up the mess left over from that age old shitstorm, it's not actually their fault and they still have an actual job to do that's more important than wallowing in their own shame.

Kinda makes me wonder what the Dark Angels would do if they ever got rid of all the Fallen, by this point nobody likes or trusts them anymore.

Hold up, the Battle of Damnos was written that long ago? The earliest sources I can find for it are the 5th edition books, which began in 2008.

I don't remember any event where the Salamanders went out of their way to sacrifice themselves and save a couple of civilians.
But I agree about the Lamenters, they are stupid and die completely pointless deaths. Giving your life to save a few civilians that will either starve or turn to gangers after realizing other planets won't take proper care of refugees is a waste of Marine life. Not saying that the Marines should have total disregard for human life, but pointlessly dying is retarded.

I think the true heroes of the Imperium are the best chapter,, remaining loyal to the Emperor even if all their allies and the very nation they tirelessly fight to protect hate these glorious yellow bastards. The true heroes are the Marines malevolent

seriously though, I like the Iron Hands a lot. I can identify with their salt over the heresy, they need more fluff.

Guardians of the Covenant are more interested wity studying the past then hunting the fallen that's true, but it's the Angels of Absolution that believe they're completely forgiven. AA still think it's their responsibility to hunt the fallen down, just that they won't suffer damnation if they don't.

I wish Matt Ward would be retroactively removed from GW entirely.

I hate the fact people quote this regardless of the fact the Ultras are not as good as other chapters at specific things. The "Spiritual Liege" thing is even worse.

I've played Ultras in every game I could up to BFG. Working on a 30k legion force now. They've always been my favourite.

I have actually killed an Avatar with Calgar, the Spiritual Liege, so that proves the fluff to me. I'm excited to see what Guilliman can do.
>>
>>47959369
big G is interesting, but I prefer to take more troops and vehicles in 30k. Single, expensive showstoppers just aren't as fun.

I am trying to have a legion force, eventually, that would make Big G proud.

It must be Ultra.

40k has no new Marine-related products I'm interested in right now. Plus 30k stuff crosses over half the time.

Why don't they use the powerfist as their signature weapon, it would be exactly the kind of weird and stupid relationship between chapter symbol and tactics that is don so much. I get why total has a bolter-chainsword combo, being the standard setup.

Carcharodons. Got to love the juxtaposition of intense brutality with strict formality. Also that despite their insular culture and unorthodox, even borderline heretical practices, they're staunchly devoted to the Emperor while almost completely divorced from the Imperium itself.

Plus, great colour scheme. After four years of playing CSM, I've finally taken the plunge and splashed out on an army of Sharks.
