This; however, one must carefully maintain the illusion of choice in order to keep a sense of player agency.

You can specifically build forking points too if you have the time, but use those to insert optional encounters and goodies as rewards for your players seeking them out; these can also be constructed in such a manner as to be as versatile as possible, for instance; bandits holding a hostage makes sense whether it's in a forest, town or ruined castle.

Fyi: Traps have a DC of 20 at first level because you *always* want to take 20 when disabling traps. The only reason you don't take 20 is when you're in combat.
>>
>>47905040
Well, we can't get together every week, we don't all live in the same city anymore. So we get together for a weekend, once a month.
And we're lucky if a campaign lasts a year.
Now:
>1/3 of 32 hours is 10.67 hours per weekend, tops (probably less, because odds are well also play a bit of mtg or go out for food or something between campaigns). But let's be very generous and call it 10.67. no breaks, no movies, no variety, just solid RPG gaming the whole weekend.
>10.67 hours a month averages out to 2.67 hours a week. This is less than 4-5 hours.4.5 hours a week is 168.75% of the most generous estimate of how much time my campaign gets.

If I can cover a reasonable level range in a year, with 60% your campaign time or less (realistically probably 2/3 of that 60%, for a total of like, 40% of your 4.5h weekly session), then so can you, if you decide you want to.

>>47905106
>Nobody runs the campaign I want to play.
Nobody runs the campaign I want to play either. So I GM it myself, and then at least it exists.
Let me know if you find a reliable way to get a GM to run what you want to play.
Plus, if you run higher level campaigns rather than staying at one, you're seeing a precedent for your group, making it easier to justify not starting 1 next time.
>>
>>47909084
Except you can't take 20 with traps because a bad enough failure would have a detrimental effect.

Pros and cons of pathfinder over other d&d
Advantages:
>More character options
>High power level
>Most compatible adventures or of any edition
>Good monster manuals.
>Better at than the other guys.
>Rules are legally online for free and better presented than can ever be managed with books or PDFs.
>DSPs classes are neat, and not really available in other editions.
Disadvantages
>Lots of Trap options you want to avoid, including entire character classes and races.
>Still uses alignment.
>WBL and having the gear you want is critical to being any good for most characters, despite most GM's ignoring the WBL rule because they don't want to give people enough gear.
>Shitty GM's starting you at L1 over and over such that you never get to play a character who's actually powerful.
>GMing advice is crap in the books, what works and doesn't is something you figure out via word of mouth and trial and error. This results in lots of crappy GM's.
>>
>>47909100
Oh. Youre right, I'm thinking locks. traps are just unusually difficult
>>
Can I put firearm on Ioun Wyrd familiar via modify construct rule? What about a newly created Ioun Wyrd?

Is there an easier way to create Bit/Funnel?
>>
>>47909117

Several of these points really depend on the GM.

>WBL and having the gear you want is critical to being any good for most characters, despite most GM's ignoring the WBL rule because they don't want to give people enough gear.

I can't speak for other GMs here, but my party usually ends up over the WBL because there are so many cool magic items I want to give out as loot. Not necessarily +whatever upgrades - one of my party's favourite items is a pair of gloves that allow you to use the Message cantrip at will.

>Shitty GM's starting you at L1 over and over such that you never get to play a character who's actually powerful.

Is that Pathfinder's fault? Maybe you should just find a non-shitty GM.
>>
>>47909218

Actually many classes have no such ability and those that do can't use them all the time.

I don't mean "spells per day" that's never a real limit I mean you need to glare and concentrate as, say, a paladin, in order to do this: it's obvious, it's at least rude if not outright hostile, and it can be very misleading.
>>
>>47909696
Right, because the guy in a lead lined cloak and lead lined face mask doesn't seem suspicious at all.
>>
>>47909775
A stand-up a few weeks ago made a damn good point about that.

We keep getting told to report anyone suspicious, as if some kids cartoon villain was laughing maniacally while tiptoeing towards some objective.

What we get is a ton of secretly-scared people suspiciously glaring and leering at everyone around them nervously.

Which looks fucking suspicious.
>>
>>47909759
Misleading how?

Yes it's rude, but paladin's do it all the time.

Can we trust you? Scan for evil.
Hmm. I'm not Sure I believe you about _____. Scan for evil.

What, you don't like it? If you're not evil you have no reason to worry.
>>
>>47909759
First off, after an argument I've had to the Nth degree with two different GM's, no, it isn't. It might be a glare or it might be a furrow of the brow or a vacant expression, all it really shows is that you're concentrating really hard on something. Not the best start to a diplomatic relation if you do it in someone's face, but all the same it's not something that broadcasts "I'm Detecting Evil on you", even if they know you're a Paladin and they suspect what you might be doing. Further, alignment as an absolute only exists as a game system abstraction- otherwise, why not get the local Paladins to do a routine scan and eliminate anyone who pings "too" evil? That's right, because it's a retarded thing to do.
Outside of fringe cases like figuring out the local abbot is a Cultist of Asmodeus on the side or discovering the Gilderavn masquerading as a military advisor in court, Detect (X) tells you jack and shit from a diplomatic perspective.

Question for ya. Not necessarily a rules question so much as a role-play question:

What do you do when an NPC causes your character to perceive something via illusion magic (and you fail the save to disbelieve) that your character knows is impossible (for example, seeing and hearing the voice of your 5-year old daughter when you haven't seen her for 20 years)?

I have failed to disbelieve it, so I believe the voice and image in front of me are real, but my character knows his daughter would be 25 by now, and not only would it be impossible for her to be before him in this form (excluding vampirism, which would probably be the first guess if he couldn't figure out his mind was being messed with), it might also be highly unlikely for the two of them to run into each. The world is pretty big, after all.

Especially troubling if the character is one who is a very Sherlocke Holmes type character. Would it be reasonable to say my character probably knows it's an illusion, even though he sees it, or does that violate the "failed to disbelieve" portion?
>>
Is there anything that benefits from having a high initiative, and how would you min-max initiative?
>>
>>47911014
>a character faced with proof that an illusion isn't real needs no saving throw
>>
>>47911014

He knows it's fake, he just doesn't care.

Why? Because as fake as it is, it's still a chance to hear the voice of his daughter and talk to "her", if not just for a few minutes.
>>
>>47911066
Is there anything that DOESN'T?
>Less likely to be flatfooted
>More likely to go against things that are
>Anything you kill, knock-out, disable or otherwise prevent the actions of mitigates damage/effects against your party
>>
>>47911109
I meant anything with a direct mechanical benefit, sorry if I was unclear. Like "for every 5 of your initiative roll, X happens."
>>
>>47911014
He'd know there's something weird going on like a particularly convincing shapeshifter or a ghost or something. He would not necessarily know for certain that it's an illusion.
>>
>>47911085
That works for failed saves against some of the mind-affecting types, which 'force' it on you anyways.

If it's just a figment or phantasm though, you can get through. You do need hard proof; and it still appears as a translucent image you can 'pretend' to interact with.
>>
>>47911125
If there is I don't know any, and they'd be dangerous as fuck; you already get so much from "going first"...
>>
>>47911084
>a character faced with proof that an illusion isn't real needs no saving throw
I would think the proof would be seeing his actual daughter before him, or seeing her corpse, something of that nature.

Otherwise, your character wouldn't be affected by an illusion of an enemy he has killed in the past, such as a rival, even though he knows that there are spells and other means of returning to life after death.

>>47911085
I like this suggestion a lot. Really good job on that one, anon.

>>47911127
So I don't, for example, have to throw myself at the illusion, crying and weeping, breathe a sigh of relief and try to embrace it, or even follow it. I could be suspicious of it, even treat it with hostility because of my character's personal knowledge of who the illusion is imitating?

Basically. Though in this particular example where the character in question has no idea what happened to his daughter, depending on the state of mind he's in and the general situation, he might let himself be fooled - it's a high fantasy setting, there could be several ways for someone to not age a day in 20 years, like time travel or some sort of stasis(like http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/t/temporal-stasis )

Our party does it easily because we have one ioun stone that eliminates the need to eat or drink (I forget which one that is, I want to say the nacreous gray sphere) that we don't implant but instead lend to whichever PC is fasting to attune themselves the the ioun stone they do want implanted, allowing them to get to the max +5 bonus and have endless retries on the check without having to break their fast. To further push it, I have a cohort with the Inexplicable Luck and Bestow Luck feats, allowing him to give someone a +8 bonus on any d20 roll once/day. With the collective +13 bonus on the check, even my PC (who only has a CHA of 11) will eventually pass the check to attune the ioun stone.

What does Cold Iron Weapons do?

I just searched the book for answers and all it says is that demons are vulnerable to it but it doesnt say how much extra damage or extra rolls or extra anything i get by using it.

Someone told me Cold Iron weapons could negate all DR from Demons and such but i dont see anything from that listed anywhere.
>>
>>47912378
Look at any demon's stat block and you'll see DR XX/cold iron and good. That means that they'll take less damage from any weapon that isn't cold iron or good aligned.
>>
>>47912378
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/outsiders/demon

Here's some demons.

See how they've got DR/Cold Iron?

Cold Iron weapons bypass that.
>>
>>47912378
Cold iron weapons are also effective at bypassing the DR of fey creatures.
>>
>>47912415
>DR XX/cold iron and good
This means that the weapon has to be both Cold Iron and Good-aligned. Either on its own won't bypass the DR. If it said DR XX/cold iron OR good, it could be either one to work

>demon, daemon
Those are practically the same. The same name except for an autistic extra letter, both like destroying everything. Seriously, the sahkil are more unique.

>merge Asuras and Rakshasas, they're both Lawful Evil fiends from Indian mythology.
But they don't even remotely have the same motivation. Asuras are omnicidal (along with half the other fiends) but Rakshasa are only interested in hedonism. Like, you know, Oni. Rakshasa and Oni are both earthbound evils driven by hedonism. How are they not the same?

Although asuras, gigas, titans, and demodands all have the shared antipathy toward the gods. The word asura is often translated as titan.

>Maybe Sahkils could be merged with Kytons, they a similar aesthetic.
Kytons are Hellraiser rip-offs who take people to hell to torture them, the Sahkils terrorize and feast on fear. Sounds more like daemons to me.

So I've got some idea for consolidation:

Rakshasa <=> Oni
Div => Demons of envy, ex-genies, counterpart of nemesis devils
Daemon => Sahkil, personifications and consumers of fear and death

That's three down, leaving 8 total.

The motivation is superficially similar. Demons want to destroy, tempt, and wreak havoc. They enjoy breaking shit, but they're essentially just around to enjoy themselves.

I don't know what level you're at but at high levels it is pretty good as you now have a familiar that is intelligent and capable of doing things on its own at level 16. If you page back to the rules for how monster classes work, you will see this:

>Some monster classes, such as the hound archon and succubus, allow the character to trade their native spell-like abilities for a spellcasting progression. If such a character later gains levels in a spellcasting class of the same type (arcane, divine, or psychic), the character can opt to continue the progression of their monster class, rather than gaining spells from the new class. The character gains new spells per day and an increase in caster level and spells known as if he had also gained a level in their monster class (even if the monster class does not have that many levels). This replaces the new class’ spellcasting progression in its entirety, including the ability to use spell completion and spell-trigger items as a member of that class. A class that only casts spells at a later level than 1st (such as the ranger) only stacks the levels where it gains spellcasting.

Unrelatedly, we've just now added a pair of new archetypes to the Fool's Errand playtest. This is likely the last of the New Stuff for that project, as pagecount has been pretty much maxed, but here is a link to a PoW Vigilante and Brawler:

"I hereby move that people who hold to RAW (rules-as-written) to such a degree that they destroy games and make things unfun or unusable should be called ogres. (because they RAW'r so much).

Just like we say 'don't feed the trolls' or 'he's trolling you' when we mean being a jerk, we can say 'stop being an ogre' when we mean don't nitpick the rules, or 'that feat is ogre-bait' when we mean RAW and RAI are clearly different."

>>47913342
I prefer to say "that feat is badly written"

People argue RAI to try and get an interpretation that's beneficial to them or detrimental to someone else.

When people argue so much about RAW, it's either because there's assholes trying to pretend the rule is something that isn't written, or because something's not properly covered (a hole in the rules), or because the rule's wording is unclear or outright fucked up.

Much of this is not the people's fault, that's the developers faults. Why should there be derogatory terms for someone if all they do is try to correct a bad understanding - or worse yet a deliberate misunderstanding? Not everyone arguing about RAW is trying to be That Guy.

Sometimes the argument is RAI vs RAW (thanks, paizo FAQs and "errata"), while other times you find That Guys saying "don't nitpick" or "just houserule it" about glaring fucking holes or screwups in the rules.

>>47915131
Many GMs do, many don't.
Anyone who plays as "PFS best rules" will want nothing to do with any 3rd party materials.

Many those who love caster supremacy as it is want nothing to do with 3rd party materials.

And no small number believe CRB is best balance, and if that's best balance anything 3rd party is obviously broken.

However, many house groups and online groups happily allow it as well. Plenty of games out there that want T3/4, and thus will sooner ban core rogue and wizard/druid/cleric/oracle than any of the DSP stuff.

Balancewise, Psion/Wilder are T2, and pretty much everything else DSP is tier 3 or 4. Balancewise there's *usually* not much to worry about.

The only excusable reason to run an AP once you know what you're doing with the game is because you have absolutely no free time to come up with stuff. Otherwise, the GM should at the very least heavily modify the AP to suit the party and it's interests.

She had no idea she had any sort of fiendish blood in her until she left her hometown to go adventuring, and is still relatively confused as to why people recoil from her squelching, tumourous form
>a Div Tiefling Div bloodlined warlock with a fear of the number 4; and a lazy smartass who just wants to crime his way into a workless easy life
>LG Daemo Tiefling Alchemist that loves nothing more then to create new pathogens. He constantly tries to work his passion in a way that isn't horrible and evil, but also believes that the suffering of an illness is a fitting punishmentfor evil souls. It was pretty much a game of telephone that escalated into a skirmish between two generals.

Our flat 10 CHA cleric managed to nat 20 a diplomacy check to convince the two generals to tell their men to stand down and to de-escalate their animosity into a duel of fisticuffs instead of pistols and sabers.

If the contender charges or would move because of a maneuver, does Point of Contention apply? Can you "charge" point blank while swinging someone to get the charge bonus? Do you provoke for this? I know these are the most annoying questions, but somebody has to ask. :\

>>47915327
A psionic companion archetype that gives up shared spells and stuff to let your companion gain some psi-like abilities and hold a focus for you would be amaaaazing.

That said, the buraq archetype is...I mean it's amazing but I feel a little bit like it's too amazing. Share spells is great, but Robe of the Forgotten Deity stocked up with Enhanced Capacity is hard to argue.

I want to make a gun mage badly by my GM is no3pp so I'm stuck with this miserable excuse for an archetype.
>>
>>47917891
Alright here we go

According to Draconomicon

Black: Swamps
Blue: Deserts, hot lowlands, ect.
Brass: Deserts
Bronze: Tropical Islands and Coastal Areas, anything w/ water, but maintain dry lairs. Interesting.
Copper: Dry, rocky uplands.
Gold: "Gold dragons can live anywhere,
but they prefer secluded
lairs. Favorite locales include the bottoms
of lakes, high plateaus, islands,
and deep gorges:
Green: Forests, obviously.
Red: Mountain homes, anything with HIGH PLACES.
Silvers: High Mountains.
Whites: Frigid climates, including high mountains in cold areas.

God, the Draconomicon is such a good book

Bronze would definitely be the golden ticket for a dragon that would cavort with Merfolk.

One level dip, the same way you play all Spellslingers.
>>
>>47918704
Spellslinger 1/sorcerer 19
>>
>>47918741
What I do to figure out backstory is figure out who the parents are - that's usually informed by race, at least in part, and gives you a starting point. Is your tiefling the child of a prostitute and a nobleman? How about a pair of cultists? What if they'd the lovechild of a half-fiend and an adventurer?

Figure out the parents, build from there. Things will fall into place.
>>
>>47918704
There are many options.

Most people are gonna tell you spellslinger 1/full caster 19

I'ma give you other options, less optimal, but much more fun.

Consider that as a Spellslinger you're not going to be a full caster, you're going to be closer to a 3/4th caster 3/4th fighter

Now. Lets talk build.

I'd suggest

Gunslinger 1/Spellslinger 4/Eldritch Knight 10/spellslinger 5

gives you good caster progression AND good BAB. You're more of a caster that can fight than a GISH though.

another option i suggest is more of a DPR build that will put you close to 3/4th casting.

Gunslinger 5/Spellslinger 5/Eldritch Knight 10

This lets you hit hard. You end up with +17 BAB, and 7th level spells at 20th level, it also lets you use a two handed firearm legitimately, as with the other build you have to use a pistol (you should probably still use a pistol)

Pretty legit, puts you on par with basically a Magus.

If you're not married to Spellslinger I'd suggest just going Eldritch Archer Magus, and either dip gunslinger or take something to get you proficiency
>>
>>47918838
I was unaware there was an archer magus.
If it's better than the myrmidarch then i'll definitely consider doing that instead.
>>
>>47918977
Its much better than Myrmidarch for being a ranged-mage
>>
>>47918977
Go Eldritch Archer, get proficiency in a firearm by being a half elf or a human, then take Amateur Gunslinger and get the quick-clear deed and you'll be good to go.
>>
>>47919033
The spellslinger's spellgun is actually really good though. I mean, x4 crit, adds the gun's enhancement to spell's DCs (and said enhancement can be attained via Magus' arcane pool feature) and is already masterwork at the start.
>>
>>47919117
Yeah, thats why I put out that Gunslinger 5/Spellslinger 5/EK 10 build, its a completely legitimate way to play spellslinger.
>>
>>47919148
Why gunslinger 5? Trench fighter gets you dex to damage in 3 levels, and that one tech barbarian archetype is strictly better than gunslinger.
>>
>>47919148
Trench Fighter is disallowed in most games because its a bizarre archetype meant for like... WW1 settings. If your DM allows it go for it though.

I know. Why would Paizo add such a thing.

Savage Technologist is bizzare, its doable i suppose.

But There's a reason I like gunslinger.

But I like Gunslinger 5 because it gets you a free feat at level 4 (rapid reload most likely), gunsmithing so you can craft your own ammo way cheaper, a free MW firearm, you get grit and deeds (including the all important quick clear), which is another feat you don't have to take, it has its half decent archetypes which you can use if you want. One of its deeds gives you +2 init. Init is GOD TIER for casters as we all know, and heck, a dodge bonus to AC for free isn't bad either

Is the Gunslinger great? No. But Gunslinger 5 is quite good. Just don't go past it. It falls off hard past that point, which is why you become a spellslinger and become an EK after that.

Sounds good! Normally when I make characters I just make a barebones shell and fill it out as I play them, but unfortunately I wasn't able to really fill them out at all. The shell is okay even if it's dull, just have to shine it up a little. Fun stuff, and I always wanted to try writing, so maybe this'll be a bit of practice. Tomorrow I can try to let the Stregone's potential Iconic loose for /pfg/ to sling mud at, if people are actually still interested. Otherwise... My favorite tiefling was a NE arcanist in a kingmaker campaign.

He had been exiled for attempting to pull a Hogwarts and ended up in the court that was handing out papers saying "create your OWN government!"

So he became the magistrate with the intent of starting a mage's college and eventually replacing the king, because A) the player is a That Guy shitter who quit halfway through the second book and B) it was the only way to acquire the funding for the tower plans, man.
