Ajani didn't really kick Bolas' ass. He got lucky. Nicol had to manifest himself inside the Maelstrom to harness Alara's mana, and Ajani ambushed him there. He couldn't defeat Bolas by his own strength, so he made an Avatar of Bolas (as he is wont to do, see the Soul's Fury cycle from Shards) to fight him. It wasn't powerful enough to defeat him, but mixed with the chaos of the Maelstrom's magic it did drive him off and stop him destroying Alara altogether. Even then, Bolas still got what he wanted, and sapped a ton of power from the Conflux to fuel himself.

It's not that the art quality was lower, the art direction had to fit a sort of fantasy-pulpy feel and the art at the time was all hand drawn illustrations. So many different artists with so many different styles then, like Foglio art is very unique and differs greatly from say Anson Maddock's hyperrealism style of art and both artists were doing MTG cards at roughly the same time. In fact the art style in the pic you posted kind of reminds me of a mix between a comic book style and those old music and/or concert posters.
