Now, enjoy the pretty pictures, and don’t shit up the thread. Scanon out.

Trying to decide if I should give my tac sergeant a power fist or a meteor hammer. He's in a 20 man squad, probably absorbing challenges. On the one hand, a power fist is a power fist. On the other, the initiative bonus could be nice in case I come up against something not using a power fist, and I'm still likely wounding on 2s.

Long time Heresy fan here, I'm going to begin purchasing the components of my 500pt army and am looking for painting resources alongside advice on strategy.

I am forgoing a Legion and am instead going to be building a Blackshield army with the following 500pt starting list. It's pretty expensive, but its my starting target, at 750pts the idea is to include dedicated transports alongside some Terminators. After that its anyones suggestion as to what else should be purchased and added to the army.

In terms of lore the spin of my Blackshields will be they are a warband from one of the two redacted Legions, warriors seeking to obtain the power of the Golden Age of technology. Toying with names, I'm considering the Auric Circle or Auric order.

Army Wide Special Rules

Legiones Astartes (Blackshields)
Wrought by War: Chymeriae Attributes: Strength +1, Toughness +1, -1 Initiative, -1"Charge and Run distance, may not make Sweeping Advances.

Total: 501pts

1x Legion Delegatus: +65pts

2x Blackshield Marauder Squads: +436pts
+10 Blackshield Marauders
+18Boltguns
+2 Plasma Guns

Lovely. I won't have access to Adobe again until next Monday, so sadly the nice pdf will have to wait until then.
>>
>>47801461
The Boltguns at +2pts per model, I could cut one of the plasma guns and switch the other to a missile launcher.
>>
>>47801432
Drop a marauder and give your Delegates a power axe.
>>
>>47801015
Sure, getting rid of armor is nice, but the unwieldy gives them a chance to kill him first, especially if they aren't unwieldy. I'm just trying to decide if the benefits of the increased initiative are worth giving up AP2. not a guaranteed kill, but allows me to not risk not being able to make my attacks to begin with
>>
>>47801432
Why a Delegatus since blackshields can't take Rites of war? Save 15 points.

>>
>>47802159
Not necessarily true. We see in Kharn: Eater of Worlds a chaplain who refined his oratory skills to peach the rites and rituals of the Blood God. I'm sure there are plenty of other unique roles that chaplains could find in traitor legions that make use of their skills, even roles completely unrelated to the chaos gods.

>Guilliman killed a legionnaire
So Alpharius failed to prove how his more flexible doctrine was superior to Guilliman's. The whole point of Guilliman's and Alpharius' feud was that Guilliman cared about honour and had his rigid tactics while Alpharius relied on extreme flexibility and didn't give a shit about honour. Guilliman killing Alpharius means that Alpharius wins their argument in the end because Guilliman had to resort to Alpharius' tactics and as a result succeeded in killing Alpharius. If Alpharius isn't killed it not only doesn't prove the superiority of Alpharius' doctrine because even when Guilliman resorted to Alpharius' doctrine and took him by surprise Alpharius still defeated him.

Unlike Curze who is an idiot who sees no difference between assassinating a madman and flaying millions of people alive Alpharius' death actually does provide vindication for what he had been saying, tactical flexibility is needed in warfare and honour is a hindrance.

>>47803320
But the Ultramarines never defeated the Alpha Legion on Eskrador, Alpharius had trained his troops to operate in case of the loss of their Primarch and the Ultramarines were ultimately forced to withdraw and bombard the planet from orbit.
>>
>>47803653
Guilliman still succeeded in killing Alpharius which was a major victory nonetheless. The battle illustrates the ultimate success of Alpha Legion. Alpharius is only killed when Guilliman follow's Alpharius' doctrine on warfare and Alpharius created such an efficient legion that even with his death they were able to achieve victory. Without Alpharius' death the battle becomes "look how clever Alpharius is" with Guilliman still being proven right (following Alpharius' doctrine didn't help and probably caused more harm than good) and Alpha Legion proving nothing because they were being led by their primarch for the entire battle.

Having Alpharius live would be like Ferrus actually surviving and was commanding and fighting alongside Autek Mor during his campaigns. Takes a ton away from the Iron Hands if they only achieved significant victories in the Heresy when led by their primarch. Autek Mor is no longer the badass who crashed a moon onto the World Eaters, he is just a guy ordered to crash a moon into the World Eaters. Likewise Alpha Legion isn't some super organized legion if Alpharius lives, they are just a legion that managed to win a battle when led by their primarch and their opponent invested a ton of resources into a failed decapitation strike.

>>47805121
Are you retarded? I am not claiming Alpharius let or should have let Guilliman kill him. The idea behind the whole story was Guilliman stuck to doctrine meaning he was easy to predict, giving Alpharius a big advantage. When Guilliman abandoned his doctrine in order to decapitate Alpha Legion's command structure Alpharius was taken by surprise because Guilliman wasn't following his doctrines, and as a result Alpharius was killed in the battle.

If Alpharius wins the battle anyway the story just becomes "Hurr Alpha Legion so sneaky, look at my dank memes, everyone is Alpharius."

>A NEET or neet is a young person who is "Not in Education, Employment, or Training". The acronym NEET was first used in the United Kingdom but its use has spread to other countries including Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

>In the United Kingdom, the classification comprises people aged between 16 and 24 (some 16 and 17 year-olds are still of compulsory school age); the subgroup of NEETs aged 16–18 is frequently of particular focus. In Japan, the classification comprises people aged between 15 and 34 who are not employed, not engaged in housework, not enrolled in school or work-related training, and not seeking work.

I haven't put my list together fully due to financial constraints but this is what I'm making.

2500 points of Ravenwing.

Xiphon for flyers and emergency anti-tank, meltabombs everywhere for AV15, plasma outriders for 2+ deathstars, every Sky Hunter squad spits out 8 Culverin and 12 Acid bolter shots per turn to deal with tactical blobs, land speeders impede movement and throw haywire shots about until they die. I'll probably end up magnetising the power weapon arms of the command squad to take either swords or axes.

HQ 855pts

Praetor, Jetbike, Paragon Blade, Master crafted Power Fist, Iron Halo, Combi-grenade launcher, Acid Shells, Rad Grenades, Digital Lasers - 265

Command Squad, x5 Marines, Jetbikes, Power Weapons, Combat Shields, Melta Bombs, Molecular Acid Shells - 440

Primus Medicae, Jetbike, Terranic Greatsword, Boarding Shield, Combi-grenade launcher, Acid Shells, Rad Grenades - 175

Troops 1230pts

Jetbike Squadron, x6 marines, x2 Volkite Culverin, Melta Bombs, Molecular Acid Shells - 310

Jetbike Squadron, x6 marines, x2 Volkite Culverin, Melta Bombs, Molecular Acid Shells - 310

Jetbike Squadron, x6 marines, x2 Volkite Culverin, Melta Bombs, Molecular Acid Shells - 310

Outrider Squad, x5 marines, Melta Bombs, Plasma Guns - 275

Xiphon, Chaff, ground trackers - 220

He didn't like Raven - he disapproved of Corax's reluctance to send his men into the grinder at Horus's orders at gate 41, and only Russ (of all people) stopped there being a fight - and he didn't like the Mk VI, thinking it not protected enough and likely wanting his own heavier design; it's thought that he had a hand in giving the under-strength Raven Guard the armour for field testing, hoping both it and they would fail.
The campaign was a resounding success and the armour got called Corvus, with the RG getting the majority of the early production

Acid Bolters are better than Volkite Culverines in dealing with both MEQs and GEQs, and they can do alright against TEQs too.
>>
>>47806843
I did have a justification for the volkites but I can't remember it at all now. I guess I'll change to acid bolters.
>>
>>47803757
The records of Girlyman killing Alpharius weren't even put into the ultramarines history by an ultramarine though. Shit never happened to begin with.
>>
>>47806843

How can acid bolts be better then culverins vs GEQs, they have few shots, don't wound any better, have a chance to not penetrate their armour and don't have cause additional wounds with your wounds, dawg
>>
>>47805998
There's nothing wrong with BAC as a core, it just isn't that great to have your army base solely around it.

>>47806030
More jetbikes, more tacticals, better equipment overall (like lascannon sponsons on the predator). No major changes, just a little bit more and a little bit better. Conversion beamer for the Contemptor maybe? Those are nasty against tanks.

I don't think the big problem is that you're playing Dark Angels, it's just that your army is a little so-and-so.
>>
>>47807075
On hindsight, nope, they're better. They cause about half a wound more...but then there's deflagrate, killing around 4 dudes.
I was thinking more about 4+ save SA when I said it. After all, 5+ is being naked in the bolter millenium.
So, those aren't GEQs. What are they? Storm Troopers Equivalents? SEQs?
Mmmmhmmmm :^)

Extreme beakie enthusiast here, experimented with some stuff for Raven Guard so I won't be murdered over using beakies for everyone else.. Silver sponging turned out terrible, definitely going with another approach. Tried out microsol and microset for the decals following some guide, but not sure I'm quite happy with the results. Was going for a gloss black, kind of hard to take pictures of it though. I think the microsol is still affecting the decals, they're looking a little better... maybe? Hard to tell.

If I get around to putting together another model I'll definitely tone down the chipping and have more deep black surfaces. I was considering doing some weird bullshit with a hint of metallics and tamiya clear blue to emulate the shimmer of raven feathers but it's probably too convoluted for a whole army.

Probably not going to invest heavily in this right now, possibly next year's army though. Any thoughts on the gloss black idea though? Did I fuck up the decals or is this working as intended?

Solar Macharius is said to have a tactical mind rivalling even Horus. It is not unheard of for a human to be able to operate on the level of a Primarch.

The difference is that Priamrchs excel at pretty much everything they do and may find operating at such high levels easy. Priamrchs may be genius by our standards but that's mainly due to physiological differences. Remember that most of them grew up on backwater worlds probably with little formal education and the only ones considered smart are the ones who had some sort of book learnin' (Magnus, Guilliman, Lorgar, Pert).

This is opposed to someone like Lotarra Sarin or Solar Macharius who are just really autistically good at one thing, military tactics. Whereas Primarchs are their equal or superior but are also charismatic, intuitive etc. Not to mention their physical prowess.
>>
>>47808153
Black's surprisingly tricky. Ditch the gloss for sure - or rather, use it before decaling but then spray a flat coat over it. And a hint of blue is more easily added in edge highlights. Just use a thin line of light blue-gray.

Or you could mix in some blue with your black. It'll barely be noticeable, but it will cut down on the effect of using pure black (which just isn't realistic).
>>
>>47808153
>>47808173
Colour is good and the decals are top notch but RG are more matte black than gloss.
>>
>>47808237
I don't think the gloss in itself is a problem, this looks a fair deal better in person, just impossible to take a decent picture of it. I need to do a second model without the shitty sponging to judge it properly.

A slight blue tinge would be good but not sure how to do it without making it too time-consuming (edgelighting everything) or hard to get consistent results (airbrushing tamiya clears.) I guess I could try mixing the black ink I use with a hint of blue, but I also don't want it to look grey.

If I'm going to paint 40+ tacs before specialists I want it to be fairly straight-forward, need to cut down on unnecessary steps.

>>47808246
Personal preference, doing Black Templars as a side project so wanted a different type of black - plus it stands out from Iron Hands and Dark Angels more.

They also have red lenses but I just think blue looks better.

I quite like the gloss black as an idea, and I can see how it could work, but I think it isn't quite there. I reckon that if you made the weathering more of a matt grey instead of metallic, so that you got the contrast in reflectivity, that might look better.

Leaving the helmet and pauldrons off would let you prime them a color other than black.

Alternately, many thin coats of a base yellow paint. I don't know what the current version is, but Iyanden Darksun would be my recommendation.

There's a Vallejo grey I have, sky grey, I think, which gets perfect coverage over black in one coat. Very pale, only needs one coat to go up to pure white. You could consider using something like that followed by a yellow ink or glaze. That, or get an alternative yellow, because flash gitz obviously isn't working for you. Again, the vallejo yellow I have (can't remember the name) goes onto that grey pretty smoothly in one coat.
>>
>>47814545
basecoat over the black with ulthuan grey, it makes painting yellow much easier, and is light enough you can go the wash route, if you want

Paint the shoulder pads separately from the model, and glue them on afterwards. Use a small ball of blutac or equivalent to stick them to a cocktail stick and undercoat them white. Same here. I'm thinking that shade of pink that can make even battleships invisible at dawn or dusk for my Costanzaian Daybreakers. I could go with a bright yellow or use the Solaire of Astora as a color scheme inspiration as the Daybreakers are big on sun imagery. I don't know what to do with the Shellbacks though.

i want to paint 1 each of all 18 legions ( I'm going to put them on a display stand like this).

I have about 12 mk 4 left from BaC. I'll probably buy 10 more marines from FW ( five mk3, five mk 6)

Is this right ?
Mk 3 - iron warriors, death guard, iron hands, imperial fist, salamander.

Mk4 - word bearers, ultramarines, blood Angels, night lords, world eaters, sons of horus, emperors children, dark angel, space wolves

Mk 6- alpha legion, raven guard, white scars

Take those one-line descriptions back to 40k. The legions are tens of thousands strong. Within every single legion I wouldn't be surprised to find individuals who, by their personality, would seem to fit in all other legions. Scholarly Night Lords, glory-hound Dark Angels, tech-obsessed Emperor's Children, cowardly Death Guard, and brutish Ultramarines.

Only a hundred or so need to fit a personality, and that's more than enough for a TT army.

Ah true they kinda were. Most legions would be satisfied with destroying the enemy or making an example of them, but the NL got boners from making them suffer.
They're astartes, they have a duty and a purpose, and even when that purpose is "retribution", it comes to nothing if you cant follow orders.
>>
>>47819682
The problem with the one phrase descriptions is it leads to all the idiots who only learned through memes, "but XX legion doesn't do that!" Which, with only an extremely tiny number of exceptions, is completely wrong. Averages are fine, but even around the average you'll still find plenty of differing legion philosophies and methods.
>>
>>47819795
>even when that purpose is "retribution", it comes to nothing if you cant follow orders
That's kind of the fluff for my guys. A terran captain who's having trouble managing the nostramans in his ranks.
>>
>>47819813
>Averages are fine
I would more say "Stereotypes are fine" because stereotypes USUALLY exist because they're frequent.
Of course the XX can do siege (as demonstrated on Paramar), but srsly, what would you expect the XXth to be doing?
Who knows! That's their main tactic: to keep the enemy guessing.
>>47819823
You do well. I'd say both Nostramans and WEs are the hardes marines to manage.
>>
>>47819813
Totally.

Seen too many armies on the table consisting of
>These are my Salamanders.
>They like fire and saving people
And that's it.
>>
>>47819855
I didn't actually mean the Alpha Legion. I meant the XX as "insert any legion name here"
>>
But if you wanted to build an army full of siege tanks and breachers, would you really pick a legion like the Night Lords? The rules wouldn’t help you, for one thing.
>>
>>47819858
Haven't we ( I ) given you lots of not-the-stereotype legion examples? Sure, you can always deviate from the norm, and it's a totally good thing. What I'm saying is that the norm exists and it's a valid thing too. Salamanders do like fire and saving people, although their 30k norm is actually enduring against all odds AND liking fire.
>>47819871
kek, I wanted to exemplify the XIXth, but you said XX and so I felt compelled to make a case for the AL.
>>47819871
You could use the NL rules to kill the opposing infantry, who may be a problem for your tanks. You have deep striking termies without the other legion's restrictions, surely you can do something with them.

>>47803757
A few catches:
First off, two primarchs. Which one got killed?
Second, the Ultras have no record of the battle. A fabrication, perhaps?
Third, the two halves of the Alpha Legion are in conflict and this is post-Heresy, meaning that the Legion is now aware that things didn't go as planned. You're going to have major conflict within the Alpha Legion.

Actually, what if Eskrador did happen, but it was Alpha Legion on Alpha Legion violence?
>>
>>47820420
of course it's a fabrication, the Ultras are probably the most incompetent legion in the whole heresy, I really doubt they would manage to outplay the Alpha Legion

if they are doing a post heresy aftermath series we'll probably get a decent account of what actually happened, Alpha vs Alpha legion is a pretty good bet
>>
>>47806759
That doesn't help.
>>
>>47820464
My take is half of the legion was disguised as Ultramarine, while the other half was openly Alpha Legion, making the physical evidence appear to be Ultramarines vs Alpha Legion.
>>
>>47816725
Really? Not even with the weird veteran entry?
>>
>>47820505
That makes a lot of sense. Maybe they used it as a way of getting under cover, after all, the Codex reforms would make record keeping a lot harder.

He appears to have gotten rid of the Thunder Warriors after being done with them.

But it’s true that the Ultramarines would be able to justify a continued existence. A few chapters would become like the samurai after the Sengoku Jidai – artists writing poetry, arranging flowers, and performing tea ceremonies (BA, EC, WS). IF and IW would become civil engineers and construction workers, and Salamanders would help them in tough places to work. Parents would pay NL to pretend to be monsters under the bed to get their kids to sleep. WE would fight to entertain crowds.

Why are there exclamation points, why is it written as a narrative and not an account or recollection, why aren't they calling xenos, well, xenos

Might not be the same but there's one chapter who's only job is to keep one race of aliens under control. These aliens are quote "hyperviolent", and the marines have to murder these monsters so Hive Fleet Kraken doesn't become stronk. Two things:
One, the Thunder Warriors were not only unstable as fuck, but they were still mortals, maybe lasted even less because of their imperfect modifications. Emprah judged them unfit to be the champions of the Great Crusade as he needed a core of immortal warriors who would embrace the ideals of it beyond a regular human's lifetime, and Emps took into account using regular humans as the main force too.
Two, the Thunder Warriors understood their time had passed. The ones that survived did so because it's human nature to not want to die, not because they disagreed with the Emperor. The Astartes are the Emperor's, they like it or not, and should He wish so He could cast them aside like He did to the old TW, but having perfected the design I doubt He would want to do so, especially because they're so widespread now. And Humanity will always have a need for immortal champions: Look at the Tyranids, look at the Tau and Necrons. And there will be always a steady supply of orks.
