I always thought of light that way when watching deathnote. He's this high int low wis character that doesn't understand how the world works and has this insanely naive, almost childlike viewpoint then systematically has his life ruined by his own hubris while trying to convince himself its not HIS fault its the world thats wrong. Yes and no but mostly no? Whole shtick of the deathnote is that whoever uses it consigns themselves and loved ones to a slow and internally atrophying life and eventual death. Hence why the shinigami world was so fucked. He was doomed from the get go and whats his face told him straight up about all of this episode 2. Eventually he would have failed but he kept digging himself deeper just to keep playing and died at age 20 something. The way he played it he even halved his life twice so if he had enough ability he could have played god into his 80's.
