Anyone got a good guide or idea for making soot covered muzzles or dirty guns? The whole knight is weathered so I'd like the gun to look somewhat the par.

2.also does anyone have the table from when the names of citidal paints changed? i need to find what regal blue is now called.

3.what's the difference between the paint types?
>>
>>47690885

1. I use a 0.9mm drillbit and a hand drill. Usually make a little hole with a knife first to get it central, then drill into the hole.

2. Search "dakkadakka Paint Range Compatibility Chart". It's my go-to for old/new paint names.

3. By paint types, do you mean brands like Citadel and Vallejo, or like bases, layers, washes, glazes etc.?

>Grass seems very fragile. I used diluted vinavil, and finish spraying the matt varnish too, but it still doesn't fell good.
No idea what vinavil is. I use wood glue to glue sand down. Then when that has dried for 24h I mix wood glue 1:2 with water and add a second coat.
After that nothing should come off anymore. Especially once it's primed, painted and varnished.
For stuff like snow I just put some white paint into my wood glue and for static grass or flock I just use regular wood glue.
Never had a problem with stuff coming off my bases.

Only backdraw is that it takes a while to dry.

Bases are your average paints, layers are a bit more transparent and not designed for base coats (they require a correct layer underneath to make sure you get the right colour if you want to base coat one with) and technical is a catch all for paints like medium and gloss.

What's the most common method to paint dark eldar skin? I've had trouble using palid wych flesh as I'm new to painting and I'm struggling to get it to cover well. Is there any other colour schemes people use?
>>
>>47692747
> I'm struggling to get it to cover well

If your problem is that the basecoat is showing, you can either work up from a grey basecoat and/or use multiple thin layers.
>>
>>47692776
How much do I need to thin my layer paints? I'm finding that some of them are too watery and they end up leaking into the recesses that I'm trying to avoid and if I don't use enough the paint looks crumbly and blocks out detail. Palid wych flesh in particular is the paint I struggle to get right with this.
>>
>>47692747

I basecoat with rakarth flesh, then wash with reikland flesh shade and finally highlight with palid wych flesh.

LahmianMedium.jpg
1B, 486x500px
>>47692822
Layer paints generally don't need to be thineed down too much. A very small drop of water in a good dollop of paint on your palette usually suffices. Either that or use a medium.

And it's of course possible that you got a bad pot. It happens.
>>
>>47692876
That looks really good so I might do a test model using that scheme and see how it compares. I'm surprised he didn't use palid wych flesh as I figured that was the main paint to use when painting dark eldar flesh.

>>47692881
>>47692899
I may pick some of that up then. I hope it's not a case of a bad pot, this stuff is damned expensive.

It looks like it's just a very dark blue edge highlighted with a lighter blue, then possibly a blue glaze to tie it all together. Not particularly difficult, just use a standard 'how to paint black' tutorial and switch out the grey for blue.

Black primer, actually. And it's fine on some models but not others. I primed a ratling gun and doom flayer in one batch. Finished the ratling gun, turned out pretty well, but the doom flayer has been losing so much paint/primer that I've given up.

coming in very late but please don't by GW medium, you can get the exact stuff in any art shop for a fraction of the price. Just look for generic acryllic medium.
>>
>>47701020
>I'm moving country in a month or so and I don't know how I'm supposed to take all my 40k.
Are you moving for good?
Or is this just temporary. Cause if it's not something long term I wouldn't bother.
If it is you could pack your stuff up and have somebody send it after you or put it in the mail the day before travel to wherever you are going.
>>
>>47702051
The thing is if you're using GW's paints you should use their medium. When a company has a line of paints their medium is going to be the one that works best with their paints.

For most people the differences won't matter, but if you're trying to squeeze out the best results with the least amount of headache it's better to just brand match.
>>

>want to paint minis
>have zero interest in the table top game

Seems like kind of a waste desu, considering how much GW fucks you in the ass for minis.
>>
>>47702872
consider dioramas?
>>
>>47702872
Actually, that's not a bad situation. If you have no interest in the tabletop, and only want minis to paint, then just go on eBay where you can easily get shit for up to half off. After that, if you're into it, just sell them back for a profit as painted and use that money to fuel the hobby. It's a genuinely fun hobby and you shouldn't let one aspect of tabletop ruin another.

And as that anon said, dioramas are a good way to go about when you get better at it.
>>
>>47702595

This is only true if the company has really weird shit in their paints or doesn't use acrylic, such as Tamiya. You NEED to buy Tamiya thinner to thin their paints.

For brands like Citadel, Vallejo, Reaper, and P3, I've found you can use anything to thin, from water, to any kind of medium or thinner product.

I use Vallejo thinner with Citadel without issue. I don't use Lahmian Medium simply because of the pot design. I can put up with GW pots for things like paint and even prefer it for things like washes, but I'm not going to use anything but droppers for things like thinners.

>>47702976
You can use them without obvious issue. But their formulae are different. Lamian Medium is literally the medium they use in their pots of paint minus the pigment, same for any other brand. They're close enough that you can mix and match without obvious issues, but for the absolute best interactions you should use the mediums that match the paints you're using.

no idea what that picture is from, but mixing a bit of white into your green (and if necessary a tiny dab of blue) until it looks minty fresh and diluting with water is enough to get this result. Just apply that wash carefully to the recesses on your model and you are done.

Political dickery would be "we are bound by ancient compact to supply you with power armour, and we're going to do the absolute bare minimum to comply." So relatively plain armour with more individualistic customisation added by the owner.

Straight up supply failure, whether due to lacking the right materials or accidentally losing the manufacturing patterns, would probably mean that the ostentatious designs would be more uniform as the Mechanicus tries to make good on the compact.

Currently painting my second carnosaur. I liked the black-white-orange scheme of the book but I don't have orange paints and didn't want to bother with mixing or go buy what I needed. I opted for yellow instead.

I'm probably going to shave off some of the spikes if that'd help for the armour?. I kind of like the fact that he's a big guy though.

>>47707783
Of course!

>>47707876
Pic related is all the paints I used on that model. First primed in a matt black spray primer, then applied 2 coats of Ulthuan Grey, 1st rough, second to clean it up. Then paint the backpack/shoulders in Macragge Blue, the silver areas Leadbelcher, and the pauldron trims in Retributor Armour. Weapon casing in Chaos Black.
Washed the whole model with 1:1 mix of Lahmian Medium & Strong Tone.
Highlight white armour with Ceramite White, blue with Temple Guard Blue, metals with Runefang Steel, and black with Mechanicus Standard Grey.
Eye lenses painted in standard fashion using greens/ Bleached Bone.
Base is treadplate plasticard in silver, and bits of cork torn up and painted grey. Blood pools in Tamiya Clear Red/Strong Tone.

Not sure if I got trolled but ya''ll told me that Krylon's Spray Primer would work fine for miniatures but this shit is spraying in a weird arch (not a circle) and is sputtering globs, no coherent coat.

At first I thought it I hadnt shaken it enough so I shook it another five minutes and nothing changed.

I was able to wash some off the model I attempted on but there are little circles and glob spots now.

I almost threw the can at my shed, thanks alot

96 proof alcohol is your friend

Strips everything, even primer and doesn't melt plastic.
>>
>>47708507
>It's not that hard to find them in the US, but the EU is fucking flooded with rogue trader stuff that isn't johnny

I saw on the Oldhammer forums that somebody asked the guy who was selling this lot if he still had it available. There was a Johnny in there for a pretty good price. I wonder if the requester was somebody from here...
>>
>>47708661
What about resin?

Is it because I got the Ultra Flat Primer?

I know I didn't want the gloss.

Going to have to run to the Hardware store for the alcohol.
>>
>>47708625
>>47708692
If it's Acrylic I use a product in the US called Purple Power. Probably the best I've used and I've tried a number of other products.

It doesn't melt resin/plastic, doesn't hurt pewter, and if there's a Walmart near you it's cheap as sin. Like 5 bucks for a whole gallon.

I've got a Rhulic Warjack soaking right now after I did some tests with varnishes. Not sure how it'll lift the varnish yet but I'm going to try.
>>
>>47708625
>>47708692

You got actual primer? What I always see posted here is pic related. GW also uses spray paint as primer, not actual primer.

Weather conditions are also extremely important for priming.
>>
>>47708692
Resin is a bit shittier to clean because to get rid of actual primer with alcohol you need to use an old toothbrush to scrub it off. Might damage fine details depending on the quality of the resin.

Also, depending on where you live, you'd probably need to go to a pharmacy for 96+ proof alcohol.

Do I still want to find flat paint or is "satin" the right thing.
>>
>>47708760
>96+ proof alcohol.

Actually they sell much higher than 96% at most hardware and auto places because it is useful to remove adhesives.
>>
>>47708766
The can on the left is the primer I used for years. If you were having the results you were having you either had a bad can or were doing something wrong.
>>
>>47708766
It's in the car section actually.

You will need to scrub some bits off like the other Anon said, but apparently it still has the active ingredient which Simple Green USED to have which makes it really good for removing paint like this.
>>
>>47708785
The grey is much better than the white, but its the white I am using now. I picked up the grey for a friend who has a darker color scheme.
>>
>>47707510
Scale with the head looks a little wierd, but you're onto something. Where did you get the sheet metal thing for his base?

For the record this is just after an overnight soak. There's some more extreme solvents you can use but for something I've tested to be pretty safe with everything I play with (resin and pewter mainly) this stuff does the best.

If you have some areas which don't come up easily with a tooth brush and a light scrub, I also favor a metal finishing brush, like the kind to smooth out rough surfaces. It has a harder tooth to it and tends to get into places the others don't. I'm risking some surface quality but it's not desperately necessary unless you're a fanatic like me.
>>
>>47709105
No, painting takes time, and if he's not willing to do it then why should you do it for nothing
>>
>>47708541
Good ideas. One of my mates pointed out he's probably on the way to Daemon Prince-hood, so I'm going with that.

Made some progress, replaced the original models Hulk Hand with a powerfist of similar size. Do I add a topknot and shoulderpad?
>>
>>47708412

Now, forgive me, but using black primer on a colour scheme that's over 80% white seems totally bonkers. Just prime white or light grey, and use a brush-on black primer on any parts you'd rather start from black (just metal and weapons for WE really, and the brass would probably be better on top of brown). Layering up to white from black is just giving yourself a whole lot of unnecessary and difficult work.
>>
>>47708863
Search for "tread plate plasticard". I bought mine in a local model railway shop, but a few places sell it online.
>>
>>47709127
So, to further complicate this. I asked him to pay upfront, in the form of paint colors I needed for his model.
>>
>>47709188
So he's buying you say, £15 of paint, and a model, in exchange for you painting one model of his?
You're getting a good deal out of that, just make sure he doesn't think you're swindling him or something
>>
>>47709145
don't add another pad, it'll throw off the proportions in a bad way

topknot's up to choice, I prefer marines without

get the mold line on that chainsword, bro
>>
>>47709105
Depends what the model is. Are we talking about an infantry sized character or an Imperial Knight?
>>
>>47709205
No, I bought the minis so they would ship to me, he paid me back, rounded in my favor, in the form of paint pots. 5 bucks of mini [we're cheap bastards] for 8.50 in paint
>>
>>47709255
As long as he's happy with it, you're fine.
Every deal is different and as long as both parties are happy, with profit for both (saved time for him, paint for you), then you're good.
>>
>>47709249

>>
>>47709154
I don't know why but I hate using white primer. No matter what type I use it always seems watery and it makes shading more difficult imo.
>>47709239
I think you're right about the pad, but I'm still unsure on the topknot. Seen the mold line, just was too engrossed in building to care . I'll sort it out in a minute.

>>47709285
I have nightmares about white primer.

Personally I like a more gritty look so working from black to white works fine.

Hi all, colourblind anon back again to ask more questions about my army.
Pic is everything painted so far, for my Dark Eldar/Harlequin/Eldar freakshow list.

Do any colours stand out as not working, or look weird?
Do all the models look thematically similar enough to look like a cohesive army?
>>
>>47709353
The harelquins have grey and orange pant checkers, and grey mask/shoulder. It looks odd but yeah. The quality is still good though
>>
>>47709413

I was thinking maybe the bone/white that the shadow spectres and the death jester use, as someone else brought that up before.

>>47709443
Dude you are fine. You are doing better than most 40k players/painters anyway.
And you got a lovely color scheme going on.

Might be that you were so worried about your color blindness you spent more time thinking about the colors than most.
Anyway, grey is a pretty neutral color, as such it doesn't clash with anything at all.

Primer doesn't need to be a solid coat to do its job. You should only be doing a full coat if you're using some kind of colored primer and treating ti as your basecoat anyway (i.e. the lazy man's Army Painter shortcut).

As long as the model has a dusting of primer on it you can start applying your basecoat. Seeing a little bit of plastic is fine, as long as it's not pure exposed plastic. Some painters even say it's better that way as spray primers are thicker than airbrush primers so a full coat would start obscuring details slightly and make them less crisp.
>>
We're saging already, and not anywhere near the image limit? Here's what I'm working on.

Don't I know it!

I'm not taking the lazy way out - this was a black undercoat for the blue bitz - but I think the primer here is obscuring some of the detail. This is an old 1st/2nd Edition model, and not the new plastic Captain Centos, but nonetheless I feel there was an unnecessary loss here that could have been avoided if I'd sprayed it on a bit lighter.

I primed some Pink Horrors with a Montana Gold pink spray primer. It was supposed to be matte, but the surface is slightly glossy and my paints (Games Workshop and Reaper HD) don't really adhere to the surface. I've heard that "Dullcote" can be applied over top the primer to solve this issue. Is this the correct product?
http://www.michaels.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-Michaels-Site/default/Product-Show?pid=cp0454

Is it safe to use acrylics over this?
>>
>>47712115
I imagine you would risk losing detail and not even knowing it until you apply brush to model as it is clear, yet an actual substance that can fill gaps and details.
>>
>>47696638
thnx anon

>>47698353
also thnx anon. how would you paint a power fist effect?, i tried the glow look but it was not very pretty.
>>
>>47712115
That's the stuff.

You should be able to lightly dust it over the primer, you're not aiming for an overall coating, just giving the surface some tooth.

All matte varnishes are a little tricky, but Dullcote is supposed to be one of the better ones.
Spray in the right weather conditions and make sure you shake the stuff thoroughly.
