Played RG Tron a few weeks ago. Barely won most of my games, so I probably won't play that again for the rest of the year.

Next up: Eldrazi, Infect or Jund.

>>
>>47616772
Gravecrawler, Diregraf Colosus, Death Baron and some form of selfmill.

Prized Amalgam and Diregraf Captain could work very well if you are willing to go U/B.

Geralf's Masterpiece and Skab Ruinator could work wonders here, they are a couple of hidden gems people havent figured how to use yet.

That and Glimpse the Unthinkable and you should be golden.

You could even add green and put some dredge up in there, Life from the Loam, Golgari Grave Troll all work great here. Then, with so much self mill, you could even play the Gitrog Monster as a control finisher.

Hello, I'm new to Magic, I've been only playing Magic: duels. But there's still something about rules i don't comprehend. When blocking with multiple creatures, which creature is first to take damage?
An example: enemy is attacking me with 5/5 creature. I'm blocking it with 4/4 and 1/2 creatures. Which of my creature is dying and why?
>>
>>47620956
your enemy decides where the damage is assigned when you block it with multiple creatures, so he can assign two to the 1/2 and the rest to the 4/4, or four to the 4/4 and one to the 1/2; basically, just block with shit you're willing to lose or you know cant die
>>
>>47620981
I see, thanks.

Would True-Name Nemesis be enough to make Merfolk (actually) Tier 1?
>>
>>47621114
Merfolk would need affinity to stop existing to be tier 1
>>
>>47621127
While still bad, Affinity becomes a much easier match post-board. I win about half the sets I play against Affinity, thanks in part to SB Hurkyl's Recall, Chalice of the Void, and Pithing Needle.
>>
>>47616922

All the goodstuff.dec dropped off during Eldrazi winter. When Splinter Twin got banned and Ancestral Vision and Thopter Foundry got unbanned everyone went to brewing with those cards and nobody was sure what to play so people played Jund.

That being said the BGx decks should start to come back to fight against Jund and Grixis decks again.
>>
>>47621114

Merfolk is pretty strong already without TNN in Modern.

I also think TNN was one of the worst designed cards ever. Powerful yes but clearly a really bad design.
>>
>>47621695
i hear this a lot but no one ever really explains further. what makes it a poor design? the intent is very clear, make it a threat that's very hard to interact with, but it still has reasonable answers
>>
>>47621695
Well of course, that's why it's been the top of Tier 2 for awhile and even had a stint in Tier 1 last year.
>>
>>47621739

Well for one it's got an extremely powerful ability(protection from a player) which in a multiplayer Commander game isn't too threatening but in an Eternal format like Legacy it's a stupidly strong card. Second it's also in a ridiculously strong tribe that's notorious for giving creatures Islandwalk and boosting P/T and it's also extremely aggressively costed for its abilities, P/T and protection. TNN may as well have protection from almost everything in a 2 player game and a card that actually has protection from everything is Progenitus and is not so easily cast(normally that is but can be Natural Ordered.) Finally it's also in colours that has easy access to many counterspells so if you don't counter it there and then it's going to start beating your face.

There are answers to it but lot of the time you either have to outrace the thing or have a universally strong wrath type board wipe(WoG, Damnation, etc.) which is expensive and may even still get countered outright not to mention also costs cmc 4 so you might take some big hits before you can even wipe the board or another toughness based reducing board wipe(Golgari Charm, Toxic Deluge) and even in the last case it's a big problem if they've already increased the toughness by some other Merfolk lords because you've probably taken a crapload of damage from it beating you for a while.

Never. While it looks good on paper, it lacks haste or an ability to further your burn plan, so it'll just end up slowing your deck down. It's better to just leave the slots open for more burn.
>>
I'm running Soul Sisters and I'm running a 1 of Iona to get underneath Windbrisk Heights. Should I switch it for Elesh Norn? They both hose certain decks, but Elesh seems to hose more.

Then again it's probably dumb to have even one of either in my deck, but I want to give it a shot.

Elesh is often the better choice, combined with less feel-bads because your dumb ass picked the wrong color.

What does your deck's god hand look like?

>Kami of False Hope / Topplegeist
>Aether Vial
>Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit
>Phantasmal Image
>Drogskol Captain
>Hallowed Fountain
>1-2 basic lands

Spirits tribal is extremely fun. It really has a lot of control tools specialized for every T1 deck, so the sideboard plays an extremely important role in the deck.

At the same time it remains an aggro tribal deck, but its a very unique one, better than merfolk and elves I'd say.
>>
>>47625932

>god hand
the post said "good hand", not god hand. if I had wanted to put a spellweaver magical christmas land hand, it would have included two simians, and a faithless looting. there is a turn 2 hand in that deck but its so incredibly unlikely.
>>
>>47625978
>The post said good hand.
Well, this one says god hand does it not?, post yours.
>>
>>47626040

>spellweaver
>flame jab
>worldfire
>simian spirit guide
>simian spirit guide
>land
>faithless looting

you need to t1 looting discarding your worldfire and flame jab and you need to get a second flame jab, and that sets you up for a win when you untap for t2.
>>
>>47623876
seperate all your lands from your everything, side board, then mash shuffle three times being careful to make sure you dont overshuffle and present your deck to your opponent to cut once.
>>
>>47626244

>overshuffle
lol

>present your deck to your opponent to cut once
your opponent can cut as many times as they like up to and including shuffling as many times as they like. your deck is not "safe" from "overshuffling" (by the way it isnt a thing)
>>
>>47625956
Check the list yourself, unlike Merfolk it doesn't rely on islandwalk and its far more resilient than elves against removal and boardwipes. Its also able to beat them both 1 on 1.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/17-04-16-CET-spirit-tribal/
>>
>>47626443

>unlike merfolk it doesn't rely on islandwalk

merfolk doesn't RELY on islandwalk, it takes advantage of it by running spreading seas. they remove a color source and swing unblockably. kind of a shame that pyroclasm is a silver bullet for you.
>>
>>47626424
he was making fun of anteri, you troglodyte
>>
>>47626563
>Pyroclasm is a silver bullet for you
It is. On the other hand Spirits survive it comfortably and can immediately bounce back from similar boardwipes thanks to Lingering Souls and Promise of Bunrei.

No I think sac and boardwipes is all there is. Blue boardwipes are just shitty white boardwipes anyways.
Really though, a card with 3/1 unblockable hexproof would be OP in modern, disregarding the tribal and anti-damage clause.
>>
Anyone play abzan company? I recently built the deck and was wondering about some tips and tricks and some spicy tech. Also what's your opinions about voice of resurgence in the deck. I'm surprised to see lists having them in the SB, some don't even run them, and not in the MB.
>>
>>47627578
there are lots of matchups where voice is just a grizzly bear.
>>
>>47627636
I remember the card being absurd in pod, but that's rpobably because of the sacrifice clause.

While I'm on the subject of pod. How similar is company to pod?

lmao no it's never a grizzly bear. normally a "counting" creature (crusader of odric, veteran warleader, wayfaring temple, scion of the wild, you name it) costs at least 3 mana unless it has some clause. voice of resurgence is a grizzly bear plus at least one of these triggers on death unless it's exiled. so it's basically 5 mana worth of shit for a colorful bear and that's completely ignoring the fact that you get extra triggers from their shit which buff each other up.

that card is nuts, it just happens to do shit all when you path or anger of the gods it.
>>
>>47627905
against infect, affinity, tron, scapeshift, and ad nauseam, it's just a grizzly bear.
>>
>Jund has the closest deck to have a 50-50 matchup against everything
>still has unwinnable matchups

The deck is fun and strong, but sometimes it's hell. Tron and Jeskai are really fucking hard (the former being completely impossible) and there are other tough matchups out there, like Scapeshift and Eldrazi. Jund may be the most played deck in the metagame, but it's definitely not an easy button and it's most certainly not 50-50 against everything.

I originally made it in 15 minutes while waiting for one of my lectures to start. Tuesday night at my lgs is free so we play intentionally bad decks for shits and giggles. I've killed people with second rite 17 times in sanctioned magic and got 4th in a 30 person gpt with it. turns out a pile of good grixis cards will win sometimes. I'm always looking for suggestions for cool cards to add. the maindeck is 61 cards just as a joke. >>

I have no clue what the fuck I'm supposed to be looking at there. Looks like Esper, which you should really give up on
If you insist on playing it and want to beat Bogles, then bring in more hand hate and take out Ashiok for LotV. Consider Wraths too.
>>
>>47627697
why razorverge?
>>
>>47632482
Wreaths are actually pretty useless against all that totem armor sadly, and the deck tries to control the board enough to either mill an opponent out with ashiok or beat them to death with their own creatures, or snapcaster if I need to. Fiendslayer Paladin makes any red matchup that doesn't run pyroclasm pretty easy, and most mid range/control decks don't run answers to ashiok. Even the answers that bgx has, the only really worrying one is abrupt decay.

Jund is typically vial-out games, and a prominent targets for land hate. Abzan suffer from it too as a potential screw, and in both Ghost Quarter would give them a basic of what they need.

In Tron, Scapeshift and Jeskai you take out your removal (vapor snag, dismember) in favor of Tectonic Edge, which can screw them if it drags out. Bench Cursecatcher for Grixis.

Why is magic fun, but so expensive?

Standard rotates out super fucking fast and the meta switches every few months

Modern is the next step outward, and is FAR more unforgiving to newbies and people not willing to drop hundreds on damn lands

Why can't I play constructed magic without spending my entire paycheck on 3 cards?

The scumbag has a point. WotC have to err on the side of caution and can't go inquisition on his ass. It would be game loss or tourney dq, but not a ban.
Also I don't think cards are being inspected that closely to find this out in the first place.

We might not like it but there's little we can do about it. Let's be content with a fact that while poorfag can buy fake toys he can't buy fake house, car or healthcare.
>>
>>47637148
Frankly, this. It's fucking retarded that I have to pay $1500 to build some jank tier 3 deck because it contains overinflated staples. It's not like I'm using the fakes to put together the premier Affinity list and 4-0 FNM. I just want to meme while still being able to afford my car and mortgage payments.
>>
>>47637160
Free healthcare here in Canada, and if you can't con your way into a house or a car, you're the shittiest manipulator.
>>
>>47637160
It's because the poorfags didn't spend $2000 on cardboard that they can afford those other things. It's even more retarded in Modern, where the top decks are banned yearly to promote "format diversity". Building a tier 1 Modern deck may as well mean flushing your money right down the toilet.

ROW ROW

I feel like the main reason the average person opposes the use is because they spent a lot of hardearned time and money investing in a deck, making sacrifices to fit a reasonable price or acquiring the deck piece by piece over time, and when we use fakes they are getting snubbed.

I honestly believe tourneys should allow proxies, like I literally cannot conceivably play Legacy at my LGS ever. Standard is more expensive than Modern, and Modern is a pricey format.
I don't want to play pauper pooper decks, janky rares are my bread n butter
>>
>>47638767
Sanctioned tournaments do not allow proxies.

Only sanctioned tournaments are entered into DCI.

If it's not sanctioned, who cares if you're using even the fakest printer proxies
>>
>>47638767
I though Wizards put their foot down on that? Either way, Vintage is mostly an online format.

>>47638745
There are several different Chinamen making fakes, each with their own flaws. There is simply no way to tell these are fake if they are double sleeved and sitting across the table. If you demand each opponent unsleeves their cards, you could probably spot fakes, but that is likely to get you thrown out first.

So there was a PPTQ over the weekend in Southport (north west England), and the TO literally went off the deep end. The prize pool was cut down to nothing during the event, with the winner getting £3.50 in store credit, and he also wanted to DQ a pair of players from my LGS for IDing in the last round to both make top 8, claiming that he could do it if he wanted because he was the TO. He's very quickly lost basically all credibility, and the big tournament being hosted in his shop next weekend has basically panicked to all fuck thinking that the guy has destroyed any chance of their event succeeding. Like, he literally said on Facebook that anyone caught IDing in his shop in the future will be DQ'd, thrown out of the shop, and given a lifetime ban from the shop.

This may be a bit off topic, but this is 4chan.

I think a field full of Tier II decks is more difficult to fight through than a field full of Tier I decks.

Knowledge is power and when you can peg a Tier I deck to 90%-95% of what cards are in their decks you have a base of knowledge.

When you tackle a tier II meta their is much more on line. The guy on top of the pile becomes Tier I (AKA Merfolk right now). People do not have 90% accuracy on the exact cards in the deck. Ad Nausem Unlife Combo has 4-5 flex spots which make the matchup amazing or terrible. The one suicide zoo comes out of no where and kills your unsuspecting ass on T3 when you cast a draw spell and a removal spell. Goryo's Vengeance decks too a lot of "free" wins from the many GP and IQ field due to shock and awe (even in game 2). Modern Dredge hits a soft meta in all metas (the graveyard), and most metas do not have more than 4 pieces that solve the graveyard puzzle. Most people are using their graveyard for recursion (snaps, and other ways also).

Misconception. Teir two are established decks
Teir 1 decks show the highest amount of play and tend to have the strongest game against most decks. Jund or affinity are good teir 1 decks.
Teir 2 tend to be good decks but aren't good against all decks. Scapeshift is a good teir 2 deck. Teir 2 decks are established and people know what's in them.
People's speshul unike brews in which it's a pile of cards only they know of tend to be untested and might have a very strong game plan against a select few decks but bad against many established decks. Turbofog, while fun and good against affinity, is awful against tron, scapeshift, storm and more.

Kind of new to modern. I keep hearing everywhere that Affinity is the format's "most hated" deck.

I get that it's a super aggressive deck that can vomit it's hand out and kill you, but is that really that much worse than others? I'd prefer that where I at least have a chance of interacting rather than some degenerate instant win combo.
>>
>>47650333
Most experience modern players (such as myself) judge Affinity as heavily disliked because the skill of the pilot is not that important. Something a semi competent pilot can pump 9 infect into you on turn 2. Affinity was piloted by to a top 8 by a top decking 13 year old amateur kid who probably eats his own boogers.

That kid is most likely a better player than all of /tg/ (including you) and knew the card interactions of his deck better than a pro player who top 8 'd a pro tour with Affinity.
>>
>>47650333
Affinity is hard to interact with in that they can blank removal, their creatures have evasion so you can hardly block, and they can go under your counterspells. Most other decks at least allow some form of interaction.

I've just started to seriously get into Magic, and the first thing I really hear of the pro scene is that this Fabrizio Anteri guy, who was apparently one of if not THE highest ranked in the world got banned for cheating.

How normal is this? In some other card games I've played, there's basically a mentality of "once you get to a certain level of success, everyone is cheating, it's just part of the game". Is the same true in MtG, where everybody's doing it but they all rip someone to shreds over it when they get caught to keep communally pretending that everyone who is consistently topping isn't cheating in some way?

Or is MtG pretty legitimate at the top?
>>
>>47650746
Fabrizio Anteri was DQed and subsequently banned from sanctioned events becausehe didn't sufficiently randomized his deck after "manaweaving" (spacing out lands and spells in the deck). It looked like cheating in the eyes of WOTC. The judges were watching him in his first round (round 4, i believe) which means they figured something was up with this guy.

>How normal is this?
It seems to happen on a yearly basis, but it's sort of rare. Don't worry about it.
>>
>>47650746

I've been following competitive magic events for over a year and only heard of fabrizio when the cheating allegations came out

Not saying my knowledge of the competitive scene is thorough but I don't believe he was THE highest ranked player

Ad Nauseam Unlife combo is a glacially slow deck.

The only saving grace is 4-8 fog effects.
The deck can do dirty things at dirty angles, but it is also high variance and is super fragile.

Ad Nauseam Unlife needs to be categorized as a Tier III Super High Variance Deck.
>>
Alright /tg/ you get to rename every deck in modern. What do you choose. I.e. infect is now thugsnbugs

Anyone else think Aristocrats builds could be decent in Modern? You can combo off turn 4 if left alone, and can grind it out with weenies and spirit tokens beyond that.

No because you want value, and Goyf is value.

For modern, would you go monoblack Vampires or B/R Vampires?
>>
>>47653404
Neither. I don't like going 0-3 drop.

I know it sounds dickish, but I really don't like losing repeatedly.
>>
>>47653404
You can try mono black with a shitload of removal an disruption but the only vampires that you could run that are actually good for constructed are Kalitas and Blood Artist. All the other decent vampires require you to go the tribal-aggro route which is not very fast and fragile.

or you can build this

just swap the Kalastria Highborn with Zulaport Cutthroat and youre set
>>
>>47651304
b-but I want to swing with big dumb creatures that have etb effects and use Kessig Wolfrun in them.

I know its not competitive at all but Id like a ramp deck that does not rely on Arbor Elf + Enchantments because its very susceptible to removal. I'd like to have ramp spells and then use See the Unwritten or Primal Command to look for the fatties that I need while buying time with creatures like Sylvan Advocate or Sakura Tribe Elder.

Bought a duel deck because my nephew (13) is starting to get into TCGs. I used to play standard like 13 years ago and started playing commander 2 years ago with a close group of friends/coworkers.

We play blessed vs cursed, but i've been wanting to toss in and toss out some cards from the latest innistrad set just to mix it up a bit. What, if any, cards from innistrad would be good to replace that are currently in the decks?

Playing Jund vs Storm, down G1 because he goes off cleanly and I have too much removal, nbd, side in some more disruption and denser threats.

>3 Discard spells and a Goyf in opening 7
>Rip his hand down to 2 Ascensions and land
>Double Ascension on board, 1 real card in hand

>Ad Nauseam is no longer a meme deck
It took several years, but it looks like Ad Nauseam has ascended the rank of meme deck. Ironically storm is now inferior to it.
>>
After playing with a few different decks for the past few weeks, I gave Bant Eldrazi a shot at Modern Monday. It was my first time playing the deck and it's pretty damn good. I went 3-1 barely losing to Merfolk and I beat Zoo, UW Control and Infect. TKS and RS are still good. Drowner "Doctor" of Hope remains a huge defensive AND offensive pivot. Eldrazi Displacer keeps being awesome by tapping potential blockers (or simply clearing the way for RS after blockers are declared) or generating insurmountable value with Doctor.

And Stirrings is the most bullshit card in the deck.
>>
>>47662599
It never was a meme deck, it just wasn't particularly great vs Pod and dig-era Delver, twin was about 50/50 (since you could potentially go off in response to their combo, Twin was more consistent though).
>>
How good or bad would high tide be in modern. The deck and the card.
>>
>>47663157
The deck would be a much better storm, very consistent turn 4 wins with a viable turn 3 with FoW backup would be too much for most decks to beat consistently. A tier 1 deck at least.
The card would see no play. Without anything to reset your lands other than Rewind, it would be very hard to combo off consistently.
>>
>>47663406
It would get beat by infect right?
>>
>>47656298
>Rip his hand down to 2 Ascensions and land

kek
>>
>>47663527
Affinity and Infect would get you sometimes, FoW would save you other times. The deck would probably evolve to playing 4 Snap main to stop aggro, maybe even a few Snapbacks.
>>
>>47663884 what if it didn't have force of will but only the range of counter available in modern.

It's my first attempt to make a deck so pls don't bully. Usually I'm playing casual games with friends but I want to try something more official at LGS. Any way to keep it budget but more usable? Any good and cheap removals, more useful token-related cards?

http://deckstats.net/deck-10280188-5e5c21fd0aea3cbf6d17e264259b16fc.html
>>
>>47664199
Ok so this list is not good, you need path to exile and such plus your curve toppers are either not relevant when they come down or not powerful enough to end the game there.what kind of strategy would you like so I can do more than just say play black white tokens
>>
>>47651584
Bait?
>>
>>47664361
Usually I was playing with a lot of small tokens and use convoke everywhere I could - for removal, lifegain, casting bigger guys like seraph of the masses etc. As I said, it was mainly casual play.
Now I want to make deck where tokens play main role as fatties and breakers, not only convokers and blockers.
>>
>>47664586
Then yea if you want to go tokens black white tokens would be the best plus the deck is not that expensive, you can go easy on the mana base because it is two colors so that will bring down the cost.

>>47664988
B-but Anon, I want to run GW
