Having my first battle soon, 500pts of my Eldar vs Tyranids. How does this list look? Should I go Runes of Fate for the seer?

1x Farseer, singing spear- 105pts

10x Guardians with ScatPlat- 105pts

5x Dire Avengers- 65pts

5x Striking Scorpions with Exarch, 2x chainsabres- 122pts

1x Vyper with dual shuriken cannons- 50pts

1x Vyper with dual shuriken cannons- 50pts

tervigon likely won't be able to fit through a lot of entrances, and although the spawning gaunts could be useful, buffing warrior units is probably better

Prime's get work done in small games, where S8 is considerably rarer. Just watch out for terminators.

Looking for advice for a 750pt tau army

HQ
Darkstrider
Ethereal + 2 marker drones

Elites
Crisis suit, Plasma + TL Plasma
Crisis suit, 2x Fusion, target lock

Troops
9x carbine FW, shas ui, guardian drone, devilfish + sensor spine + dpod
10x rifle FW, SMS turret

Heavy
2x broadsides, TL rail TL SMS
1x firesight marksmen, 3x sniper drones

total 750 pts

the ethereal joins the snipers to get stealth and to have a total of 3 BS5 markerlights, also gives the rifle FW, snipers and broadsides FNP

Darkstrider joins the carbine team

the setup is made from what i own, otherwise i would be using 3x firesight marksmen and more snipers instead of the ethereal

Runes of fate is always great.

If he got the Tyranid Swarm box and is using most of those gaunts you're going to be severly outnumbered. He might simply go unbound or use the 'fex as Old one Eye for an HQ.

You might want to find room for the Scorpion Exarch to use a claw instead, since it will pose somewhat of a threat to a charging fex with S6 AP2.

With what you have you may not have enough volume of fire to sizeably dent his stuff, so a lot of it will depend on your unit placement and kiting (very manageable with Vypers). On the other hand I don't know what the hell your opponent has for synapse. You'll probably want to kill whatever it is as soon as possible and hope that the swarm eats itself after that.
>>
>>47587659
>the setup is made from what i own

Well tell us what you own then.

General rule of thumb though, Railsides are only more efficient against lots of 2+ armour, multi-wound models or AV14 (though they're still very poor at the latter). In all other cases, Missilesides are the better bet.

A full squad of Carbine FW are also generally inefficient, especially against Marines (and other enemies) that outright ignore pinning. With your setup for them, Breachers would have been the much better pick. Carbines meanwhile are better scattered throughout squads of pulse rifles, if taken at all.
>>
>>47587734
Won't that be too similar to the light blue armor?
>>
>>47587751
>Well tell us what you own then.

Aside from the ones in the army i have
4 crisis, 2x double flamer, 1 with burst and plasma, 1 with flamer and missile pod (yay ebay)

6x stealth suits, one with fusion blaster

1 extra support turret, 1x rifle FW, 16 drones mostly on sprues

I would have gone breachers if i had any, I could split up the 10 carbines and 10 rifles but the point of the rifles was the sit at the back covering my ethereal and enjoying either 3 shots at 15" or FNP

I wanted a squad that pushes forward, carbines are better than rifles for that even if pinning can be ignored by certain races, they are treated as S6 thanks to darkstrider and are very hard to assault
>>
Is the venerable dreadnought for Space Wolves worth taking, especially with the Great axe and Blizzard shield?
>>
>>47587761
Not if it's hight saturation, vs the rather subdued uniforms.
Maybe Red lenses too depends on helmet colour
>>
>>47587659
>Darkstrider
What do you plan to do with him?
>Ethereal
Marker drones are strange since they don't give the bonus if the unit he's in is firing along with him. Usually people leave him bare and throw him into a unit of Fire warriors since there are way more heads there.
>Crisis suits
Drop the TL on the plasma, you don't need the rerolls so badly. Why do you need the target lock? The fusion suit is already by himself and you may not find enough vehicles in 750pts to deep strike and give 1 shot each.
>Breachers and warriors
Hard to go wrong here.
>Devilfish upgrades
Up to you, usually never occurs to me to buy vehicle upgrades.
>Broadsides
Missilesides are usually better for screwing over blobs of infantry. The rail rifle has been iffy ever since it lost S10. It's essentially a glorified missile launcher and you usually take those in groups of 4.

Do you have a third crisis suit or some drones lying around? You might be better served with a meatier crisis suit team of 3 with ablative drone wounds or maybe even getting a drone commander. If not, then this setup is probably as good as you can get.
>>
>>47587806
>>47587840 talking again.
Can you reconfigure the crisis suits? With these options you might want to have at least a pair of dual plasma with a third on flamer/fusion duty.

Stealth suits are also great fun.
>>
>>47587840
Darkstrider is giving the carbines S6 in effect and letting them push up hard thanks to the 6" movement after overwatch

Ethereal markerdrones are being controlled by the firesight marksmen, i only have 1 marksmen so this allows me to have 3 BS5 markerlights instead of 1, which is more than enough at 750 pts, sniper drones dont need markerlights anyway because they always hit on 2+ and always wound on 4+

targetlock is because the 2 suits are not alone, they are together otherwise im practically asking to give away first blood, although i could give the ethereal armor instead

devilfish upgrades give it +1 cover save and auto pass dangerous terrain, basically makes it way more mobile and can make a fort for its troops near a building

dont have missile sides unfortunately, but my back line has 3 SMS so its not _that_ bad to have rail sides instead

I have other suits here >>47587806, I could remove a broadside for a better crisis team but because i know im taking ethereal i want to abuse FNP broadsides being boosted by 3 BS5 MLS

>>47587859
nope, i built the double flamers, the triple plasma and the double fusion, the other 2 were off ebay

Stealth suits are very expensive but ive ordered some remora drones to pair with a stealth squad for some shrouded hilarity
>>
>>47587901

My last game went well though. Took it easy on a Nurgle CSM player.

Today I should have a game (Round 3) of BA and his house rules. Which reminds me to write a reminder for myself to snap a pic of his rules so we can all discuss them here.

I've been out of the hobby for years, I posted the Dunecrawler in another 40k general a bit ago, some anons were curious when I mentioned that I'd tacked on the Icarus Launcher just because I thought it looked cool. Dunecrawler body isn't glued to the legs yet for ease of painting, that's why it's a bit crooked.

Using the Anvil Strike force, ran a Comtemptor as my warlord and gave him a trait that let him shoot twice. Was pretty awesome.

Thinking of giving him an honour guard by upping his unit to three Comtemptors. Would prolly buy one of the FW ones instead of more Calth tho, this one took quite a bit of conversion work just to look decent.
>>

>>
Where would be a good place to buy the type of hacksaw you need to neatly cut plastic models for conversions?
>>
All I want is a scifi tabletop wargame that's midway between skirmish and company scale, with good looking and plastic miniatures, a healthy or at least growing community, reasonable prices, balanced rules, a low skill floor but a high skill ceiling, and a high degree of both model and unit options for customization.

Why is that too much to ask?
>>
>>47588689
Jeweler's saw might work, coping saw with fine teeth. Anything that won't just chew the model up, really. For smaller stuff, I've found flush cutters work fine since normally I ditch whatever I'm cutting off (say a hand and gun from a weapon conversion) anyways.
>>
>>47588695
>Why is that too much to ask?

Yes because the person to either side of you probably wants something completely different.

>>
>>47588695

ignoring that reasonable prices is subjective to a point, asking for balanced rules and tonnes of models/ factions/ customisation is extremely unliky

>>47588832
I looked it up, apparently the gentler, finer brother of the coping saw is called a "fretsaw." Hobby shops might have them, people use little hobby saws for cutting model railway tracks and such. Could also just hit up Home Depot most likely

T5 makes a lot more durable, and defensive grenades are great, along with hit and run.

Personally, I love them. I never play without them, and have a setup of 3 of them with all weapon options available on magnets.

Think of them as close range shooters that are really good at shielding your more squishy units from assault units. If you are dedicated to them as charge blockers, FnP makes them crazy good at stopping pretty much anything that wants to threaten them.

I'm specifically wondering about allegiances. Arguably, yes, the TS probably would've stayed loyal, so there's that. But actually wondering what choices they would make differently with full knowledge of their mistakes is a different cup of tea entirely.

>>
>>47589700
Basically, I was thinking that the attacker gets 1.5x the points of the defender, but only units that can outflank or infiltrate can deploy. Everything else goes in reserves. Your deployment edge is the short table side, not the long, going 1/3 of the way in. If either side loses a unit, it enters ongoing reserves (reinforcements).

Somewhere in the middle or defender table third, there would be an objective that allows the controller's units in reserve to deepstrike.
>>
>>47589766
Oh, woops:

The game ends after five turns, the defender has three objectives in his territory, whoever holds more at the end wins.

Try something along the lines of this, it should play very similar to what you wanted.

Word for the wise on tau HQ. now don't let this discourage you from just doing it cause you want to, but dark strider should be about 25 maybe 30 points.

The crisis commander while he is awesome is effectually just a crisis suit with more wounds. In general it's better to have 2 regulars than him. If you want a commander cause they are awesome make sure to take the iridium armour, makes him expensive but turns him into a badass, who can tank crak missiles for your other suits.

>>
>>47590564
Because eldar are pure, unadulturated bullshit. They're the most powerful army in the entire game, and have been so since SECOND EDITION, while getting constant buffs every edition.

They're literally so overpowered, that you actually have to make an extreme amount of effort to make a list bad enough that you don't table all other armies by turn 3. And even then your worst list is nearly 5x better than the best lists of 90% of the armies in the game.

Why don't you try it for yourself? Try making the least powerful list you can manage, and bring it to the table against a guard, orks, tyranids, or Deldar army. You'll be tabling them by turn 4.

Hey /tg/, I'm prone to starting armies based on models that catch my eye and random ideas that pop into my head (the GW Exorcist is the primary reason I play Sisters for example), and I have to admit that I like the Lord of Skulls (in the same sort of "so bad it's awesome" sense I like most b-movies) and have been inspired to start a KDK army.

Other than a basic color scheme (I'm thinking bone and brass with red tally marks to show off squad numbers) I'm still trying to work out a fun, but reasonably effective list focused mainly around a Berserker core.

Recommendations?

You need a stronger theme than ice.

For example Space Wolves have an ice theme with frost (power) weapons and ice shamans (librarians) but cold isn't the chapter's most defining trait.

Are you planning a Norse theme or just decorating your marines with icicles in a similar way that Night Lords have lightning?

>Recommendations?

Not overly familiar with the variety of builds they have available but my buddy loves his gorepack and it is fairly effective. He also runs a Juggerlord with some Relic weapon in a gang of flesh-hounds. Quick and aggressive.

Bezerkers probably want the rhino just to try and get close for what good it will do them.

I would use a simple CAD to fulfill your love of Berserkers then add in a gore pack.

I think you can also fit them in a Slaughter Cult which is a good base according to my friend.
>>
>>47590834
Bras, bone and white will present on the table as beige lumps.
>>
How's this for a scenario idea?

Danger Close

Load up the board with a ton of trees or other semi-cover things. Place objectives. Vehicles are allowed, but they should be hard to use.

In each players shooting phase, that player centers a barrage blast over each obj the enemy controls (or maybe just on every objective, not sure yet) and roll 4d6 for scatter. Servo skulls can't affect this.

When infantry troop models are killed, they respawn in ongoing reserves.

Based on WW1 trench/forest fighting.
>>

>>

>18 riptides
Have they become that common in the fluff? I thought riptides were like "1 per cadre" level stuff.

Also I don't think riptides are really fit with "artillery". They are rapid response front line control kind of suits
>>
>>47590911
I've seen the CAD/Gorepack combo get bandied about but honestly I'm a bit more partial to the Slaughtercult as it has nice benefits (extra Blood Tithe point every turn and an extra Blood Tithe rule everytime you get a rule) and Possessed are pretty okay (having both Rage and Furious Charge on them helps a lot mainly. Not to mention a 3+/5++ isn't horrible either.)

Problem I have is I get kind of hooked on weird units that are effective, but only because no one expects them to be good (like Repentia). Chaos Assault Terminators (7 attacks on the charge with the right Blood Tithe, and you re-roll wounds) and the Raptor formations both come to mind because they look like fun but are likely just point sinks, so I'm trying to not get bogged down too much but that the same time running them looks entertaining.

>>47590916
I was planning on using AoS Blood Warriors with backpacks and Bolt Pistol Arms (likely stolen from the Raptor kit since the old CSM arms don't match the look as well) which means a lot of Brass to break up the bone look. Plus they have the bunny ears.

I figure if Death Wing can pull off bone armor with not much to really break it up, CSM who have a lot more trim to help create visual seperation (especially when said trim is done in a shiny metallic paint) should be okay.

Plus the red squad markings should help break things up. Using the Blood Warriors also means a fleshy bare arm to hold their weapon with (I've always been a fan of that look for Berzerkers and am dissapointed that the Berzerker kit doesn't follow through on that image like Kharn does) should help create some visual interest outside of it, especially with a ruddy flesh color.

At least that's my theory. As you said it'll be more apparent on the table. I think dark bases (perhaps like the new Imperium Sector bases to make them look like a raiding warband for example) will help them stand out individually as well.

Not really. It's for fun. I couldn't even represent that amount of firepower on the tabletop. A single battery should be about 6 self-propelled 152mm artillery pieces. A battalion 18 and a full regiment 54.

Obviously, that many artillery pieces are meant to operate as part of a Division (10,000–25,000 men) with 3 infantry + 1 tank regiment + support or similar configuration. The Tau only form divisions temporally.

I'd have to hold them in my hands to get a better look at them before deciding that, but honestly I've seen Chaos Warriors used as CSM and the boots don't look all that out of place there so I don't see an issue.

A light bone for the armor, with a dark brass for trim isn't exactly being the same color. I was looking at blue for a spot color, and bright red for squad markings (through a tally mark system).

And I was aiming for a less yellowish bone like the current Deathwing and more of a bleached bone look with it being more white than yellow as the primary color.

Don't have photo's, but the last Apocalypse match I went to was Humanity Vs Xenos/Daemons, I took my Space Wolves. The "Brotheren of the Fell-handed" formation did well for itself. Bjorn got 1-shotted turn 1 by a Stormsurge, but the other 2 did really well. After Skarbrand had just murdered a Knight in melee, my 2 Venerable Dreadnoughts with Shields charged him. 1 of them managed to eat all of his attacks, before biting the dust (Absorbed 9 penetrating hits, saved every one of them, except the Explodes results on the last one.) Skarbrand was down to 3 wounds, so my other Dreadnought finished him off. All attacks hit, all wounded, none saved. My Dread won the "David Vs Goliath" award for killing something that much bigger than itself.

Of course, right after consolidating from his victory over Skarbrand, a fucking Eldar Warwalker managed to get into his side armour and 1 shotted him with a fucking Bright-Lance.

I didn't do anything else noteworthy in the game except suck and die, because I don't have the money for Super-Heavies. I just fielded a fuckton of Infantry and Rune-Priests to try and give us the Psyker Advantage.

Some were too different from other's to relate to other humans properly.either physically or mentally.

Night haunter for one was way to paranoid to be vulnerable and intimate.

The Lion went straight from being a feral child to being a knight.

Magnus was.. a freak, even overlooking his colour or single eye his size alone would scare most off.

Unless there were female gladiators in the pits or they took brothers in arms to a Sparten level, Angron is unlikely to have bedded.

The rest may well have had women.

tau don't have SPGs, and riptides aren't really close to equivalent in role

The tau leave all that shit to drones and missiles. Any "artillery" regiment would instead be using a glut of skyray missile tanks instead. Probably a bunch of missile destroyers in reserve to deploy them all, too.

I did mention my other idea involved using Raptors as my base since they look good and then it's just a head/arm swap for bunny ears and axes. Backpacks would likely need to be stolen from another kit as usual.

Not exactly. They are like direct fire artillery. However, I like to assume that the Ion Accelerator and Pulse Drivers have far larger ranges on fluff than on the tabletop. The same with Basilisk and other artilleries from other armies. Skyray are also a good option, but they seem more suited for a SAM regiment.

6x Chosen - Draznicht's Ravager's, 5x Plasma Guns, 1x Plasma Pistol on the Champ (258 including the Rhino)

1x Chaos Rhino - Dirge Caster, Combi-Bolter, Warpflame Gargoyles

10x Cultists - 9x Autopistols, 1x Flamer. (55 pts)

5x Possessed (130 pts)

5x Raptors - 2x Meltaguns, Melta Bombs on the Champ. (120 pts)

Because GW said so.

More seriously it's likely related to the same reason why we can't assault out of most transports: needing close combat because they want the game to be more shooty.

I still hope we see the balance swing back at least a little the other way.

Also assault ramps could be a nice upgrade for Rhinos/Razorbacks. +10 to be an Assault vehicle.

Sorcerer is way too expensive. Cut the Relics, give him extra Mastery Levels or just leave him barebones with the Familiar.

Draznicht's Ravagers is missing as of the reprinting. Can't reprint NPC books without at least one nerf.

Warpflame Gargoyles are worthless. Soul Blaze is shit.

I'd at least give the Possessed a party van to get them further up the field.

The list could really use some ranged fire support.

>>47591995
They're not similar in function, a Riptide isn't mobile artillery. Riptides, in the fluff, are used as a spearhead to crush enemy tank lines, not to lob explosions far downfield.

Tau's artillery, if you want a model that currently exists, is almost certainly either a Skyray, Hammerhead, Stormsurge, or Broadside.

Here's an idea. 35 points gives the rhino a charge move. Overwatch hits at full BS. If the rhino dies, follow normal rules for that. If it gets into combat, the unit it is carrying is disembarked into combat.

Maybe it could be a variant of tank shock that pushes models to the side rather than back?

Space Hulk Vanguard (750pts)
Tyranids: Codex (2014) (Combined Arms Detachment)

HQ (150pts)
Tyranid Prime
Flesh Hooks, Lashwhip & Boneswords, Spinefists

Elites (200pts)

-Broodlord

Genestealer Brood (130pts)
-Broodlord

Tyranid Warrior Brood (140pts)
4 x Tyranid Warrior
Rending Claws, Scything Talons

The Prime joins the Warriors, and the Zoanthropes either stick near psykers. My local area LOVES their psykers, and we have both a Tzeentch Demon player and a Grey Knight player, so that looks extremely good on paper coupled with the Horror power.

The Genestealers stalk around and look for chargeable targets, and the Lictors aim to assasinate some heavy weapons that would otherwise be a huge threat to my Warriors.

How does this look? I know Assault is generally considered bad, but I am coming from a Tau army, and I want some fucking assault, and not just more shooty shit.

Should CSM get artefacts based off the Gods of Law? Basically, warbands go around chaining and mind-raping bits of the Gods of Law into serving them.

Like:
-An Aspect of Alluminas that makes units test as if hit by a Blind weapon, and if they fail, they can't move.
-An Aspect of Solkan that makes unsaved wounds increase strength.
-An Aspect of Arianka that boosts Leadership and Morale in some way.

Make their guns actually do something.

Sweet, a bomber! With... bombs as strong as pulse rifles... that you can randomly run out of. That's accidentally useful because GW sneezed while balancing its drones. Ignore those, and it has the firepower of half a squad of firewarriors.

Sweet, an air superiority fighter! That is as fragile as most ordinary flyers, has mediocre firepower, and doesn't excel at anything except... shooting vehicles in the rear, because of the way its turret happens to be mounted. Hey, a Hammerhead that easily hits rear armor isn't bad, but it's not good either.

They're models without an actual niche to fill. Oh, and they're ugly, which doesn't help. They're basically just mediocre flying tanks (especially for the Razorshark, which is just a Hammerhead with wings instead of armor), and they're boring to use.

All of them.

2 Crew and a two wound gun is 4 wounds per 65 point Rapier. They have the same leadership as the Havoc squads (the sarge is going to die first). Battle Cannons wound Rapiers on a 3+ as opposed to a 2+ for the Havocs. Ignorant or just stupid?

Anyone can help an anon out here? I am not really familiar with Tyranids, so a bit of help would be greatly appreciated.

They took the knife away from their rules many editions ago. You're not wrong, it's just that rules wise you don't get the knife anymore unless the rules give it to you or allow you to buy it, usually for 1 point.

Assault is good on ZM so at least you don't have to worry about that. One first glance I felt like you had too many psykers but you explained why you had them. I dunno, I don't play Tyranids in ZM and I only have experience against them on normal tables which is Flyrant territory.

Looks like a typical ZM Genestealer list to me with some psykers thrown in. Maybe get a better HQ or cram in that Brood Lord model. I bet the new Genestealer Hybrids are good for ZM.

No idea what I should take for my HQ, but someone recommended the Prime.

I have two broodlords? and I kinda need an actual HQ to have a standard CAD.

Looking through it, Deathleaper actually looks pretty good for the cost, compared to a Prime. The prime grants more WS, but considering my usual opponents... Not a lot of them have WS5 or higher, so I don't really need that additional weapon skill on the Warriors. Could probably scrap the warriors as well, to be honest, if I am not taking the Prime anyway.

I kinda want to avoid the Instinctive behavior issue entirely.

And Flyrants aren't really workable here, nor do they sound all that fun.
