Is there any good reason why classic metal drinking fountains couldn't be rigged up in isolation in the middle of the desert with pipes running down to the water table?
>>
>>47580552
Physically not, but it's incredibly wasteful given how few people are expected to ever use it.
>>
>>47580552
Because they'd either need electric pumps or manual pumps that would dry out after a while. And a dry manual pump can get to the point where you need to actually pour water into it to make it work, so you'd need to already have water anyway when coming across a fountain.

Because honor is literally the only thing holding the society apart and "no samurai would lie" is accepted as fact (In public anyway. Everyone knows that people lie). If the social conceit of universal truth and responsibility was ever dropped, the whole country would unravel at the seams within weeks.

There's nothing inherently wrong about being a male feminist, so long as you don't go off the deep end into the "women >>>> men" shithole. Just like how there's nothing inherently wrong about playing PnP games, so long as you don't start sperging out IRL about MAGICAL REALM FURRIES REEEEEE because the DM decided to give you a quest from some kobolds who want to help their metallic dragon lord.
Although there's very few real goals left, there's still stuff like "any field that women go into tends to start being considered as weak and lesser" (psychology, philosophy, biology) that needs fixing.
>>
>>47588973
The source isn't something that's brought up often, and usually only in the context of that image. Hell, until I reread the original thread, I thought it was referencing getting OUT of a dragon who's got a thing for stuffing lesser creatures up his ass.

Psychology gets shit on because it's a barely coherent pseudoscience with infamously awful experimental design, not because it's a field dominated by women. If it was dominated by men, it would still get shit on.

This is part of why nobody should take feminists seriously anymore. The victim complex inherent in the philosophy of feminism turns every issue into a gender issue, obfuscating the actual problem.

And yes, there is something inherently wrong with being a male feminist. By accepting the feminist narrative, as a man, you are implicitly accepting your role in the narrative, i.e that of the reformed oppressor. Male feminists therefore always have something apologetic about them, this sense that they're trying to atone for some unspoken and unspecified crime.

I wouldn't call it murder, per-say, since a fetus in early development (first trimester) lacks the conciousness. IMO, abortion is more comparable to pulling the plug on a brain-dead patient than murder of a sentient.

I kinda like Britain's abortion laws: after the first trimester (when a fetus starts to get conciousness), you can only get an abortion if it could seriously affect your health, or if its a rape baby

it does have the advantage of being true. because it's science. and it doesnt question truth in any subtle way, which is totally fine, thats one of the tenants of the empirical sciences. Which at the end of the day is a sort of applied mathematics.

That's easy. The advantage of something being true is that you can use it to make accurate predictions about the behavior of the world around you.

philosophy and science should by no means be antagonists, and admittedly their current relationship is philosophy's fault,

however mathematizing the world is flawed at best, and slides pretty easily into cruelty when unquestioned. is it really reasonable to render all forms of 'speculation' into navelgazing?

hell a large part of how we engage with the empirical sciences is BECAUSE of what philosophy has worked through

building a groundwork of language and understanding so as to further how we decide to trust some things and disregard other things is a philosophical pursuit

i mean, how does science really have anything to do with a critique of pure reason or a genealogy of morals

OCD is one of the most common mental disorders world wide. It expresses itself in many ways, from a need to repeatedly check things, such as checking a lock, unlocking and relocking it a certain number of times, etcetera. The most common expression of it, however, is a sort of agitation and nervousness when things are not symmetrical or in order. Something such as that, where a perfect, symmetrical design is destroyed, especially in such a messy way, is... grating.

Not all form of speculation is pure navelgazing. Some of it is useful for entertainment, like science fiction. But that's what philosophy should stick to - entertainment.

How is our understanding of truth in any way influenced by Philosophical considerations? As far as I'm aware philosophy did try to hold discourse about truth, and it never led to anything productive or helpful, every time they tried. It just spawned or enabled ideologies, which is a ad metric to measure the viability of ideas.
Sophism did not achieve shit.
Relativism did not achieve shit.
etc
Experimentalism and Empiricism have been unchanged since the history of mankind, as even the earliest of documents understand that
1) there are objective truths
and
2) knowing these truths is beneficial

So how has philosophy ever added to those very basic principles, which yet encompass every deliberation you could have about the topic "truths"?

treating people as people = something as simple as 'not making slaves'

our whole problem with empiric observation is that it is exactly that: observation
its still a human construct, the whole idea of observation
manifestation isnt something that just has always been, the world doesnt exist for us to perceive it. the common defences towards empiric observation borrow wildly from the german idealists, who loved empiric observation

I think in this case it's less that it's symmetry being made asymmetrical, but that it's a fragile work of art being deliberately destroyed. People got upset about that woman who painted over Christ's face for the same reason.

No, that's not how science works. You come up with a hypothesis, then try to disprove it. You don't just test the same thing over and over for that exact fucking reason.

Geometry in which what constitutes a "point" and what constitutes a "line" are not the usual things that those words imply, but all of the to her usual rules do. There is more than one system of geometry that is non-euclidean.

If Euclidean Geometry can be visualized on a flat plane, one system can be visualised on the surface of a sphere, with a "line" being any circle that covers the sphere's full circumference and "point" being two points on that circle directly opposite each other at a distance equal to the sphere's diameter. In this system, parallel lines will always intersect.

The other system can be visualized on the surface of a shape kind of like a pringle, and I don't understand it as well. Parallel lines will always grow farther away from each other as you follow them.

The destruction is part of the philosophical experience, but I don't know that I'd call it part of the art itself. It's a buddhist thing about non-attachment and impermance, and it's supposed to make you upset uncomfortable, if you haven't yet given up attachment.

>facts

>Since until now they have been "true" and "objective"
how do you know?

>The fact that the rules haven't changed the fact that the rules have not been violated is evidence that they cannot be violated

Simply because a law has not been broken yet does not mean it will never be broken or cannot be broken.

Your mathematics, your logic, your perception are all human constructions. How do you know that they're objective?

>>47592544

>>
>>47593649

You have such trust in your constructions, and deride people who question them.

How did the scientific method come into existence? Was peer review chosen through a peer-reviewed process?
>>
>>47593365
>Really? Is quantum mechanics consistent and logical with general physics?

Yeah.
>>
>>47593677
If you were actually saying something interesting, I wouldn't be dismissive. But literally everything you're saying is "but what if life WAS a macaroon!?"
>>
>>47593732
What's so wrong about doubting preconceived notions? Scientific consensus will eventually be discarded for something else, something else coming along and being the next new "objectivity".

For instance, 500 years ago, people genuinely believed in humoral theory. Doesn't make it right.

In any case, what was it that they say about if there's a complete system that it's wrong?

But I do genuinely believe that objectivity is a lie and that truth is inherently subjective, and you're welcome to mock me for that, famalam.

So, is saying "there is no such thing as objectivity as humans are inherently subjective; that scientific consensus is always in a state of flux, and that logic is falliable" as absurd as macaroons? I sure hope so. Macaroons are tasty.
>>
>>47593732
Other guy here, you're still not making any deductive reasonings on why he's wrong here. Your claim was that facts stemming from 'science' are in fact absolute truths, other anon questioned it by providing a world model in which your statement is incorrect and you've just replied with "nah, that's dumb" twice now. You yourself are the person sounding like one of those many idiots in history who simply could not believe anything that the science of their day didn't directly support.

Look, there's an interesting conversation here and there are legitimate points to be made for both sides, but if you're like this it's not gonna happen. And what are you still having this discussion for, then? Isn't the goal of any discussion to either learn something yourself or to teach/convince someone else (of) something? You're not gonna accomplish either by being dismissive like that.
>>
>>47593852
>>47593942
The "being dismissive" thing applies to you too, by the way. Your attitude isn't really helping to convince this other anon either.
>>
>>47594054
My argument is antithetical to what i presume the other guy believes with every fibre of his body. So I'm not sure how to giftwrap it.

Funny thing is, I'm a chem major. Chose chem because it's the science that makes the most sense to me, the science with general everyday applicability, and the one that doesn't make general "objective" claims.

Sure, there are rules, like, "carbon doesn't like holding 5 extra electrons and will try to avoid it" but I don't see them as objective, just, like, a roadmap. It's a lot more chill, a lot less THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY/
>>
>>47593852
I've already responded. You challenged my preconceived notions, so I responded. The laws of nature do not change, only our understanding of them does. If the laws of nature apparently change - if gravity stops being proportional to distance and starts being inversely proportional, or heat stops transferring and instead cold stops transferring, and we are still alive to experience it, then the proper assumption is that we do not yet understand the truth. So we come up with theories, and we test them, and we try to disprove them, and we understand the truth a little bit better.

The alternative, that there is no truth, isn't worth considering, because it's impossible. I don't mean "it's not possible in my limited understanding," I mean it's a contradiction. If the truth is that the laws of nature change randomly, then that itself is an objective truth. Therefore, there will always be one objective truth, even if it's "there are no objective truths besides this one." So even if reality is subjective, that fact would be objective, and could be objectively tested. Moreover understanding that still lets us make meaningful predictions of the future - namely, that any effort spent trying to understand any other "truth" will ultimately be futile, since it can change at any time. So we'd still use the scientific method to determine that we shouldn't use the scientific method.
>>
>>47594189
>The laws of nature do not change
As far as you know, sure.

>our understanding of them does
Yes, I agree

>If the truth is that the laws of nature change randomly, then that itself is an objective truth
I still don't understand how you can know that it's objective. A truth, sure.

>So even if reality is subjective, that fact would be objective
Why? Surely that's a contradiction in terms?
>>
>>47594264
If reality is subjective, then it is objectively true that reality is subjective. That's not a contradiction, that's literally what objectively means
>>
>>47594497
Sorry, your phrasing confused me. Thanks
>>
>>47594264
>I still don't understand how you can know that it's objective. A truth, sure.

The different anon again here, I think it's because he relies on some axioms of logic to come to the conclusion that a contradiction is impossible but doesn't realize the assumptions he's making.
>>
>>47594792
Please explain how "there is no objective truth" would not itself be an objective truth.
>>
>>47595070
You're looking for a logical explanation, when that anon's point is that you're assuming logic is real. Let's not forget that Aristotle made logic up so he could win arguments with Plato.
>>
>>47595351
Then come up with an emotional explanation.
