As for shooting multiple times, that's just how you do it. Two in the chest, one in the head. If you pull that trigger, you shoot to kill.

If anything, it's important he make the shots lethal, because then he can establish consistent intent. You can get burned to the ground if a lawyer or investigation were to establish you didn't shoot with the intent to kill, because that means you didn't want to kill him, but did so anyways. By making lethal shots, he can hold to the fact that he had recognized that the man was a threat to life and limb, and he took the measures he needed to protect himself.

Things are much smoother if the guy behind the weapon, officer or not, understands the rules and the situation. Things only really become a shit show when whoever is pulling the trigger either has no idea what they're doing or thinks they're fucking Rambo.

Some shit can get stupid though, most certainly. A big one I think that can fuck people is that if you shoot someone, you shouldn't attempt to help them in any way afterwards. If the cops come up to a scene and see you desperately trying to save the guy you put a bullet in, they're going to think it was either an accident or that you didn't actually feel threatened enough to kill them, and you're trying to save them out of guilt.

Between that and searching a body for a weapon, shit can get ugly as hell.

So what are you supposed to do if you shoot someone in (a clear case of) self defense?

Aim to kill and don't miss. Its honestly better if you magdump into a guy's heart and head with 100% accuracy than fuck up and aim for say a leg.
That way you can claim with 100% assurance you felt your life was threatened and were acting solely in self preservation. I'll break it down:

thats excessive use of force and obviously had the situation under control enough to make a difficult shot. This means you weren't panicking and weren't actually "in fear" for your life. This hurts your case.

Who the fuck gave you a gun?! All cops should be above military grade sniper's who experience zero recoil and be able to predict suspect movement with intrinsic clairvoyance.

If you shoot someone in clear self defense, you call the cops, you stay there, and you do nothing. I wouldn't even put my weapon away until the police showed up, just so that when they came on a call of shots fired they're not wondering where your weapon went. Once the cops arrive, take all commands, though if there's more than one officer and they're all yelling commands, don't do shit, just freeze and don't do anything. Let one of them establish themselves, then take his commands. No reason to get shot because one cop is telling you to put your hands in the air and a second one is telling you to get on the ground, and one takes it as a signal of non-compliance because you're listening to the other one. So long as you make no moves at all, you're far less likely to get shot.

Once the cops start containing the situation, you explain to them what happened, tell them some variation of you feared for your life(which should be absolutely true, shooting a motherfucker is no joke), and then pretty much just let them sort it out. So long as your story checks out and they've got no reason to hold you, there's a pretty good chance you'll get to go home.

Beyond that, the issue that comes up most often is the nature of self defense. Basically, if you're being confronted directly, you want to establish to the person that you've got a weapon. The standard thing they teach is to yell some variation of "Stop of I'll shoot" while taking a step back. More conservative classes often teach to repeat it if they keep moving towards you before you shoot, but generally you can be considered in the clear at that point.

You're a lot less likely than a cop to get burned for any issues provided you acted correctly(Can still happen, especially if there's some political or racial shit in what you did), but that's because you do shit different.

Lot of times you'll see cops get burned because they chase a subject after a confrontation(IE, something they're usually supposed to do), which makes them look like an aggressor. There's no reason for you to ever do that shit short of something like your wife/daughter/son/husband/whatever getting kidnapped.

The one last thing that can come up, but usually doesn't, is what some call revenge killing.

Say you're in a gas station that gets held up by a dude with a shotgun. You're in the back, buying soda, and the guy doesn't know you're there. If the guy shoots the cashier after he's done getting the cash and starts leaving, you can no longer shoot the dude. You're no longer acting to protect yourself, you're acting in revenge.

At the end of the day, however, the real answers to self defense is to not put yourself into the situation. Most of these situations can be avoided simply by paying attention.

Too many people end up in bad situations related to shootings because they buy a gun because it makes them feel powerful, do nothing to practice with it or understand when to use it, and then either freak out and shoot someone when they had no need too or actually go looking for bad situations because they think they're a badass.

Lot of people who own guns, especially pistols, have no business doing so.
