He's not.

Good and evil are mortal concepts and by definition Nyarly is above that.

He's Lovecraft's most actively malicious character and outright corrupts men's societies for funsies and has avatars that requires baby sacrifices.

Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos, and God of a Thousand Forms, is one of the most powerful deities in the Lovecraft mythos. One of the Outer Gods, beings that are so monstrous in scope and power that they make Cthulhu look like a frog.

Nyarlathotep is a cool guy, though. He's a party animal who doesn't really know when to stop, is his real issue. Anyone who hangs out with him is sure to have a fun, entirely unproductive time. Everyone saying otherwise is just jealous of his dashing good looks, and the fact that he has like, a billion more avatars than everyone else.

From his species's own perspective, he probably isn't. However, you/ your character does not operate on that level, and are in fact in the exact bracket of pathethic that he like's to have "fun" with. So, for all practical purposes, he's an evil motherfucker.

>>47526749
the point with lovecraftian beasties is that they are incomprehensible to mortals and stuff. So, the concept of alignments kind of breaks down when applied to them, at least from their perspective. If applied at a mortal perspective, he'd be so deep into CE that he'd drop off the graph.

I read an interesting theory as to the logic behind this phrase. The idea is that drums are very 'primal' in terms of the emotional and physical reactions to them, in addition to being very simple. One the other hand flute playing is a very precise, calculated exercise. And that sums up the outer gods extremely well, cold, calculating, precise and at the same time simple and primal. It's the image for them I try to bear in mind whenever I run lovecraftian horror.

The Dance of the Old Gods

In the cold infinity of the void, unfathomable eons beyond our mortal scale of time, a drumroll began, and a fanfare sounded. First came the deep, undulating mass of Azathoth, the blind idiot god, the ebb and flow of his endless power the very heartbeat of the universe, this noise, this beat, the underscore of creation itself. Accompanying it is the gentle trill of Yog-sothoth, a delicate harmony speaking of perfect mathematical alignment across the grand scale of the multiverse, the sound of endless spheres revolving across the cosmos. Joining the first two, the harmony between Hastur and Shub-nigguruth, the dark low notes of despair mixed in balance with the vigorous energy of life itself, speaking at once to the beauty of birth and all the joy of life, and the fatal certainty of death, someone enhancing, rather than diminishing, one another. And in the center of the stage Nyarthalotep, soul of the old gods, at the same time composer and listener to this grand orchestra, dancing along, in some pattern of pure chaos, since strange eons before time has he danced to the music of the cosmos, and he will show all life the beauty of it.

just something I had an idea for after reading this thread

The rules are bad. The creator essentially wanted to make a Powered by the Apocalypse game but without full control or understanding of how those games can be made good. Tremulus is all over the place.

But the fluff can be good. The city generation tool is pretty solid and the playbooks give a taste of what a certain person ought to be good at/own/act like. But the rules don't support it well.

Canon is a very loose thing here.

I mean heck, the very idea of imposing a canon, like with the CoC RPG system and universe, is radically heretical.

Lovecraft used and swiped from other writers, many things changed, other writers did the same with his ideas. I mean, technically I could link just about anything to the Cthulhu mythos via mutual crossovers.
>>
>>47530226

Some of it. Lovecraft spoke highly of Chamber's writings and referenced Hastur as a sinister name in his own writings. Some of the wider stuff around Hastur (like Derleth saying he's a wind spirit) are ehhhhhh.

Pardon my newfagness, but when you say Yog-Sothothery are you refering to the "Cthulhu Mythos" asa whole or does it have a different meaning here?
>>
>>47530784
Isn't it the name Lovecraft gave his mythos? Cthulhu really wasn't the focus back then, it only became known as the Cthulhu mythos in recent times.
>>
>>47530859
I know that an Anthology book is called that way, but you're right, calling it Cthulhu Mythos is the popular or more common name
>>
>>47530784
Thus because Cthulhu has zero importance we call it the Yog-Sothothery/Yog-Sothoth Mythos/Yog-Sothoth Cycle is the name for hardcore nerds like us who used Lovecraft's original name for it
>>
>>47530784
>>47530859
>>47530897

"Yog-Sothothery" is the term Lovecraft used to refer to his collected and inter-referential writings, the world and mythology he was building through his tales. He called it that because Yog-Sothoth was a far more active and prevalent part of the stories compared to Cthulhu, who appears in one and is referred to much less frequently.
>>
>>47530859
I thought that somewhere it was said that he kept changing the name since, for the most part, he considered them as just standalone stories with the same themes.

I'm fairly sure Nyar already pretty much has all the powers of Azathoth. I've always read it as he has all of his powers due to being the messager of the outer gods and the servant of Azathoth but he can't use it or at least minimizes it due to the danger that He'll wake up.

Not like he needs to either given what he is.

I read Narly as the 'Conscious' Ego of Azathoth the Dreaming. He's the 'lucid part' that keeps things running and entertaining.

As Azathoth is The Dreamer, he's technically the source of all (or at least most) thought in the Lovecraftian universe. However, there are certain beings like Yog-Sothoth (and possibly Hastur) who may be true outsiders, intruders to the dream.

The difficulty in dealing with Narly is that as the manipulator/guidance of the Dream he's capable of some impressive reality manipulation, down to knowing thoughts or taking on the visage of players in The Dream.

However as
>>47533489
points out, he himself runs the danger of causing Azathoth to wake up hence why he doesn't just run around stealing masksand overtly tossing around magic excepting certain circumstances are met (it's dream logic, the greatest danger is that Azathoth becomes aware of the dream in such a way as to wake, such event is likely to absorb and end Narly's reign of independence.)

Of course the knowledge of this relation is itself existentially dangerous as the more widespread it becomes the closer Azathoth comes to waking (he's technically everybody, remember?)

The only "evil" character in the Lovcraft Mythos is Azahoth and he isn't so much evil as existence is dependent on him staying asleep.

Cthulu is arguably the biggest prick though because, he knows this and chooses nihilism anyway.
While the other old gods and elder races are horrifying to human existence, we are ultimately insignificant on any perceivable scale in the cosmos.
The reason C'thulu doesn't have any friends and why the rest of the pantheon hate him is because he literally wants to end everything for everyone forever.
>>
>>47533818
It goes like this:
Nyarlathotep:The Ego- the subject- the lead
Yog-Sothoth: The dream-the canvas-the play
Azahoth: The dreamer-the artist- the playwrite

When the dream ends Azahoth is all that's left.
>>
>>47526808
Nyarlathotep is a cunt. He is the herald of Azathoth and the soul of all the Outer Gods, and is basically the Mercury of Lovecraft's insane pantheon.

Unlike all the other Gods, Nyarlathotep is actually self-aware as a human would understand it, and is aware of suffering, pain, and the existence of man itself. Whereas Yog-Sothoth and all his lesser aspects do not realize if they snuff out human life, any more than how you are unaware of how you are constantly killing microbes by just existing thanks to your immune response, Nyarlathotep knows. He knows all the agony he causes and he RELISHES it, wanting nothing more than to bath in the agony of life. His favorite pastime is trolling unsuspecting humans and torturing them, mentally or physically, and it is he who will destroy all of mankind and the entire solar system.

Despite being more or less all-powerful as an aspect of Azathoth, Nyarlathotep has an undescribable hatred for mankind, and singles us out of all the rest of life in the multi-verse as his toys to break. He's just the definition of a dick, because not only is he aware that the actions he commits are evil, but that he could also be benevolent to the little amoebas running around his feet. He goes beyond giving a fuck, he goes out of his way to step on your family and laugh at your response.
>>

No, Yog-Sothoth is actually the most powerful God in all of Lovecraft's work, anything that puts him below Azathoth is mostly a revision by fans or fan-authors adding to the Mythos. Not only was the Cthulhu Mythos originally supposed to be called 'Yog-Sothothery', but Yog-Sothoth is omnipresent and exists outside of existence. While Azathoth's dream is in fact reality, all of it (the Lovecraft universe is infinite in both dimensions, alternate dimensions, and mirror universes, etc), Yog-Sothoth is somehow beyond -that- and is best compared to the Catholic interpretation of YHWH as an unknowable, unthinkable, infinitely existing all powerful God who comprises everything. You are Yog-Sothoth. I am Yog-Sothoth. We are all Yog-Sothoth, for everything is part of Yog-Sothoth. Yog-Sothoth is existence itself, and beyond that. For Yog-Sothoth is the Keeper of the Gate and the Gate itself, and the Gate is reality.

Azathoth is the dreamer, reality is his dream. Yog-Sothoth is something from outside that dream that has completely permeated it.

Nyarlathotep is evil even by his own perception. He knows what he does causes suffering, he understands what suffering is, he doesn't care however and does it anyway out of spite. Ironically, the Outer God with the burning hatred of mankind is the most human of all the Gods.

And at the last from inner Egypt came
The strange dark One to whom the fellahs bowed;
Silent and lean and cryptically proud,
And wrapped in fabrics red as sunset flame.
Throngs pressed around, frantic for his commands,
But leaving, could not tell what they had heard;
While through the nations spread the awestruck word
That wild beasts followed him and licked his hands.

Soon from the sea a noxious birth began;
Forgotten lands with weedy spires of gold;
The ground was cleft, and mad auroras rolled
Down on the quaking citadels of man.
Then, crushing what he chanced to mould in play,
The idiot Chaos blew Earth’s dust away.

No. Yog-Sothoth specifically existed before Azathoth, as according to Lovecraft he has no Pedigree. Yog-Sothoth predates existence itself and exists outside it, yet is it. He is both the guardian of the gate and IS the gate. The Gate is existence.
>>
>>47534960
>The Gate is existence.

And all of existence is the Dream. You're arguing in circles.
>>
>>47534987
That's the point anon. Yog-Sothoth is both the gate and its guardian. He is it and is outside of it. There is nothing higher on the pantheon of the mythos than Yog-Sothoth, for he exists beyond the dream and is the dream. More than any of the other Gods, Yoggy is incomprehensible in scope.

>A gate had been unlocked; not indeed the Ultimate Gate, but one >leading from earth and time to that extension of earth which is outside >time, and from which in turn the Ultimate Gate leads fearsomely and >perilously to the Last Void which is outside all earths, all universes, and >all matter.

Those spheres and circles aren't just there for appearances. It's because Yog-Sothoth is existence and not-existence. Those bubbling things on its "flesh" are in fact universes and dimensions he assumes form from. It's no wonder why Carter when completely insane after encountering Yog-Sothoth and receiving knowledge from the God; he stared into true infinity and peered into its infinite amount of knowledge. The fact that his brain didn't immediately turn to goop from trying to process that much data is impressive as hell.

Those noticed by Yog-Sothoth are lucky enough to make me jealous. Sure you go utterly fucking insane, but just imagine the experience of, even just for a second, literally all of existence, infinity itself and even beyond that infinity, staring at you. Noticing you, single pathetic speck of dust, a unfathomably small piece of the infinite existence, its attention torn just for a moment from all that is to purely -notice- you. To not only behold you, but to state with the act of imparting knowledge "I, infinity itself, cares".
>>
>>47535266
Just to hammer this home.

>The main body of the beings inhabits strangely organized abysses wholly beyond the utmost reach of any human imagination. The space-time globule which we recognize as the totality of all cosmic entity is only an atom in the genuine infinity which is theirs.

So when Yog-Sothoth notices a mortal man and imparts knowledge to him, it's like you noticing the existence of a Higgs-Boson particle.
>>
>>47534855
Going by Lovecraft's "genology of the Eldar Gods" (which admittably is not a serious text, being a family tree that starts with the Outer Gods and ends with Lovecraft himself, is as far as I know the only source of Lovecraft's own description of relations between Mythos entities), Azatoth was the first. Nyarlathotep is one step below Azatoth, which makes sense considering he's literally the embodiment of Azatoth's mind/soul. Yog-Sothot and Shub-Niggurath are two steps below Azatoth, apparently descending from something called "nameless mist" and "darkness", respectively (I'd theorise that these were the raw stuff of Azatoth's dream, which later gained sapience or coalesced into the other Outer Gods). Interestingly, Yog-Sothot's and Shub-Niggurath's interaction resulted in spawning of at least some of the lesser Outer Gods, and from them came the Great Old Ones.

Yog-Sothot is in some sources described of as more powerful than Azatoth, though, at least in practice. He exists in every point in space and time, making him omniscient and nearly omnipotent, and unlike Azatoth he actually can actively use his powers. He'd still end when Azatoth wakes up, in as much as a being that exists everywhere and every time at once can end (for a being like Yog-Sothot, the end of existence would just be one place and time and space among others, and he'd still continue to simultaneously exist in every point of time and space in the past).
>>
>>47535409
>So when Yog-Sothoth notices a mortal man and imparts knowledge to him, it's like you noticing the existence of a Higgs-Boson particle.
To be fair, we do seem to think that's an endeavor worth a great deal of man-hours and money.
>>
>>47526699
Of all the Lovecraft monsters, Nyarlathotep best fits the common idea of evil, since unlike the other monsters in Lovecraft's work Nyarlathotep is an actively malicious agent, not an unconscious force like the rest.

>make the lore moves actually make sense
>give each playbook more interesting options
>>
>>47536403
Nah, the Dunwich Horror is a spanw of Yog-Sothot, as mentioned in the story. However, I think the implicationw as that old man Whateley was the one who actually did the sex part, using some ritual to imbue the resulting child with Yog-Sothot's power (would explain why the Horror had his face, and would probably make more sense than the embodiment of all of space and time having sex with some creepy albino chick).
>>
>people arguing whether Azathoth or Yog-Sothoth is more powerful or relevant
For fuck's sake neither can exist without the other.
Azathoth is what does the creating, Yog-Sothoth is what is created, and Nyarlathotep is the meaning within creation.

>we are ultimately insignificant on any perceivable scale in the cosmos.
The only Lovecraftian deity that has had any particular interest in "helping" humanity in any fathomable way is Nodens. Everyone else ranges from the blandly indifferent to the indifferently hostile, to actively hostile.

Nyarlathotep is (but one of) Lovecraft's manifestation of the fear of the unknown. Technological discoveries were in full bloom during Lovecraft's time, and we often see Nyarlathotep pushing these frightfully unknown engines of terrible malady on an unsuspecting public.

>>47534858
Dunno. You don't consider things that are below human to be subject to human standards. Like, you don't usually call a man-eating lion "evil", because you don't usually judge him as you would a person. He is a menace, and that's about all you can say.

On the other hand, if your dog is angry at you because you deny it a treat, but you happen to have a reason for doing so that your dog couldn't conceive - do you think your dog's judgement of you is that important? Maybe from a practical standpoint, but of moral consequence?

When a human tries to judge a superhuman intelligence, or something altogether different like mindless Azatoth, it's always a pointless endeavor.

Calling it "evil" doesn't really do anything for you because aliens don't do "evil" for the reasons evil humans do it.
>>
So let me get this straight

I think Nyarl's version of "uplift" is handing a grenade to a toddler. Sure, you could blame the toddler for knowing shit about military grade explosives but that would make you a fucking retard.

Having fancy tech does not lead to a better existence on it's own. Machines are powerful and therefore dangerous and there is a very good reason we approach new advancements with caution. We always need to keep an eye on how our technical power grows because with each new advancement comes new opportunities for terror that can easily slip past our attention.

Of course part of the fear is of ourselves. We know the pull of shiny new toys is strong. If a thing exists, no matter how dangerous, it will be used. Not everyone will want to use it, but enough will and there is no guarantee that they will use it safely or even sanely.

Of course Old Gods don't give a shit about sane use of tech. Nyarl knows humanity enough to know that that we don't have the background to use his "gifts" in any way we would consider beneficial. It's very likely what he is doing is what we could rationally interpret as "uplifting with hostile intent."

Nyarlathotep the spirit of unchecked creation without reason or restraint. He distributes the kind of power that doesn't give mankind more control over it's destiny but only warps to fit the twisted frame of the power itself.

NY HAR RUT
The chaos he does crawl.
NY HAR RUT
Man's empires soon will fall.

Nyar was just a formless
chaotic little spawn-thing
But his praises we sing
Or us he will devour.

NY HAR RUT
He never tells a lie.
NY HAR RUT
He makes you wanna die.

Unveiling the true universe,
burning out your mind
Nyarlathotep's here to make
everybody blind!
Look out!

Despite his many faces,
all one thousand one,
Nyarlhathotep's master
could make everything be gone.

If Azathoth wakes up the survivors will be none.
So hope he never finds his 'larm clock or he never sees the sun! (Ftaghn!)

NY HAR RUT
His favourite food is slime!
NY HAR RUT

The whole Nyarly/Azzy dream thing? Is it canon HPL stuff?
>>
>>47548139
It's a logical step.

Azathoth dreams up the universe. Everything within the universe is his dream.

Nyarlathotep is in the universe.

Nyarlathotep is therefore one of Azathoth's dreams.

A dream is just a part of the dreamer.

Nyarlathotep is a dream of Azathoth.

Nyarlathotep is a part of Azathoth.

I like Nodens. Deific being of unspecified power who hunts the servants of the Great Old Ones and Nyarly himself. Enjoys fucking with the Outer God who fucks with humanity.

>>47548174
Right, but anons here are outright saying he's the main aspect. Nyarly is from where Azzy sees his dream from. Y'know, how you see yourself in a dream.

I haven't read Lovecraft in a while.
There's the guy staring out the window, thinking of the endless universe, and dreaming about Azathoth, titled Azathoth, and there's The Music of Erich Zann.

Neither of those, as I recall, even mention that Azzy dreams of the universe. It just says its best to leave him sleeping, right?

>>47548269
Wasn't Outer gods about some blokes looking at Nodens and his folk dancing at the mountain. remember something about Nyarly protecting them and The Yellow King telling on them?
>>
In a 1921 letter to Reinhardt Kleiner, Lovecraft related the dream he had had — described as "the most realistic and horrible [nightmare] I have experienced since the age of ten" — that served as the basis for his prose poem "Nyarlathotep". In the dream, he received a letter from his friend Samuel Loveman that read:

Don't fail to see Nyarlathotep if he comes to Providence. He is horrible — horrible beyond anything you can imagine — but wonderful. He haunts one for hours afterward. I am still shuddering at what he showed.

Lovecraft commented:

I had never heard the name NYARLATHOTEP before, but seemed to understand the allusion. Nyarlathotep was a kind of itinerant showman or lecturer who held forth in public halls and aroused widespread fear and discussion with his exhibitions. These exhibitions consisted of two parts — first, a horrible — possibly prophetic — cinema reel; and later some extraordinary experiments with scientific and electrical apparatus. As I received the letter, I seemed to recall that Nyarlathotep was already in Providence.... I seemed to remember that persons had whispered to me in awe of his horrors, and warned me not to go near him. But Loveman's dream letter decided me.... As I left the house I saw throngs of men plodding through the night, all whispering affrightedly and bound in one direction. I fell in with them, afraid yet eager to see and hear the great, the obscure, the unutterable Nyarlathotep.[2]

It may be because Nyarlathotep's been described similarly to Azathoth at one point. "[The] grinning caverns of earth's centre where Nyarlathotep, the mad faceless god, howls blindly in the darkness to the piping of two amorphous idiot flute-players"

Or because he's been described as their soul in his eponymous poem. "And through this revolting graveyard of the universe the muffled, maddening beating of drums, and thin, monotonous whine of blasphemous flutes from inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond Time; the detestable pounding and piping whereunto dance slowly, awkwardly, and absurdly the gigantic, tenebrous ultimate gods—the blind, voiceless, mindless gargoyles whose soul is Nyarlathotep."

Not quite vampires.

The Outer Ones, more commonly known now as the Mi-Go or Fungi From Yuggoth use surgical means to remove peoples' brains, to stick them in jars so they be sources of knowledge in the future. They then use the hollowed out bodies to disguise themselves crudely as their victims.

Nyarlatothep is one of the best short stories by Lovecraft. Mostly free of his usual purple prose, does a good job of giving a interesting setting to the story in just a few paragraphs, and there's something very captivating about the idea of an Outer God going around as a Egyptian wandering wizard and people attending him as if it was an spectacle

Nyarlathotep is also often referred as "messager and soul of the Outer Gods", implying he's a physical manifestation of their will. He's also created directly from Azatoth, before even the other Outer Gods came into existence. I don't it's ever directly stated that he's the part of Azatoth's mind that it experiences the dream through, but it can be easily inferred.

>Now interestingly, Hastur's name is right at the point between locations and entities. Which leaves the (often ignored) option, that Hastur is a place, not a being.
Well, seeing as a lot of the stories shared more of a referential and thematic canon rather than a narrative one it's entirely possible there are different Hasturs.

There is the general concept of Hastur/The King in Yellow and Carcosa, what is connected to them and the role they play in the universe. They may not all be consistently the same in form but what they mean is understood no matter the context: Decay, decadence, emptiness, lost glory, spoiled desire, ambition and folly intertwined, a kingdom in living death, pure golden yellow.
