What are your LEAST favorite model to paint in your army? Why?

Mine would probably be drones, just because i paint sept symbols on top, so it is a pain.

I hate painting Space Marine bikes. They're a real drag to paint for some reason.
I'm generally a fan of infantry or monsters, tanks and vehicles are not that much fun to me.

Honestly, I love painting my guardsmen, but skin really gets me. I'll get over it, and I feel like I'm starting to get better with it.

This is the last of the snapfit guardsmen I finished Sunday, going to start up my first real guardsmen when I have the time. Sadly, that's most likely going to have to wait until the Summer.

I feel the same way. I hate vehicles because of the large swaths of flat mono colored armor plating, and I don't have an airbrush either. Bike's are annoying because there's deceptively a lot to fucking paint. You feel like the bikes should be as quick as a marine or terminator, but it feels like they take 3 times as long. They go on and on and the flat square areas on the bike are boring as sin too.

You know I think that may be the problem. Marines for the most part are all curved and rounded armor around their bodies. In fact most infantry is like this. Bikes and tanks are all flat angular armor.
>>
>>47328164
I would highly suggest you use the sword arm to connect that shied to. Cut the blade off and it has a ready made handle.
>>
>>47328901
That's not a bad idea at all. I'm going to end up having to use a strip of plasticard or sprue or something for the handle on the other 4 SS terminators since the BaC box comes with just one sword arm.

>>
>>47329556
I'm afraid that I can't into straight lines. My hands are too shaky, sadly.
>>
>>47329518

Only marginally more difficult than a regular scheme if you know how to use tape properly to create straight lines.
>>
>>47329858
>masking an entire tactical marine

I count EIGHT elevation changes if you mask vertically down the middle, and that's being generous. It's more like 13 if you count every bit of curvature, and counting the skull as 1.

It'll be tough to really mash that tape in there good to prevent any overspray whatsoever.
>>
>>47329858
I don't know how to use tape on models, I'm sad to say.

Can someone explain/show me how?
>>
Hey guys do you typically decorate the base of your model before or after painting it?
>>
>>47329895

Why the fuck would you do it after if you paint your model on the base? You need to prime your base so how are you going to do that if your completed model is already on top of it?

If you don't paint your model on the base, then it doesn't matter which one you do first, so I can only assume your bases are already stuck to your model. Yes, you can brush on primer afterwards but why the fuck wouldn't you prime the whole thing together when you first primed the miniature?

>>
>>47326759
Most space marine vehicles, especially drop pods. There's way too many flat sides and angles that just make it more boring in my opinion.

Also the newer pink horror models. Old pewter ones are fantastic to paint, but the new ones feel pretty bland on details and look pretty dumb.
>>
>>47330063
sand yes flock no.
if you plan on doing flock, and you also want to matt varnish your models for protection, apply the flock after the varnish otherwise it'll get clogged up by the spray

SM armor is segmented. That means you ever only have to make super short lines at once.
All you need is to make a quick straight stroke. The slower you move the brush the more squiggly your lines are gonna get.
So don't be discouraged. Confidence shows in your strokes.

That said painting the scheme itself should be easy.
Prime white, paint the white parts, then paint the parting line in black, do the base color and edge highlight the black side.

I dont have enough experience to say I have a least favorite, but the one issue I am coming up against as I learn about painting models is highlighting Ork machinery and in general painting the more fiddly bits of Ork machines. Theres just so many fucking edges and corners, and Ork tech, while being fun to look at, has so many fiddly bits that I find it hard to keep the colors varied enough with the few assortments of paints I have right now, especially when it comes to the wires/tubes/cords n shit.

Will never understand people who are game only for 40k. 1. it's not even close to the best game for just the rules, and 2. the game's not nearly as enjoyable with shitty unpainted models on the table, and 3. the game is like the LEAST biggest draw to the franchise compared to models or lore, although it is probably the most important as without rules, 40k probably wouldn't be popular.

Don't put the cracking paint on the edges next time.

Top two are alright, last one looks like you didn't apply enough cracking paint so you got the really tiny cracks.

While it's good that you were careful, the few lines of bright colour mean the top two are still quite dark.
Try starting red and adding some random patches of orange across the whole base, then going yellow to white inside those patches.

>>
>>47329895
I almost always do the base before I paint the model. Despite what other anons have said you do not NEED to prime sand, but you really should. I recommend you do the basing before priming, but honestly if you are just doing an infantry dude walking on a 28 or 32mm base, and you are just going to go for an "grey urban rubble" type base or something, you can get away with basing after painting. All my 40k armies are based to look like they are on some kind of bombed out hive city with lots of greyish rubble, mud, and toxic waste, so when I rebased my old marines on 32mms I just glued them to the new base then based it, and used imperial primer on the sand.
I would never recommend doing that for anything larger than basic infantry though. On bigger models like the Onager Dunecrawler I painted the base first and then attached the actual model

What would be a good way to go about an arctic-night fighting color scheme?

Or, failing that, does anyone have a suggestion for a dark swamp color scheme? The old one I used was olive green washed dark blue but it was so dark it was barely distinguishable from black.

I don't understand. The hive fleets are entirely naturally grown, aren't they? It's orks who use hulks and slap on bits.

The fents and sculpting looks nice, I'd go for a more "grown" look based on that instead of adding these bits.

It's easier too I think. You can buy ready made pipe and add greenstuff to it to turn it into vents as well as the nid bits you were using already anyway. A single scything talon makes a nice ship ridge for example.

Ah, well you see the hiveship didn't grow those red, clearly man-made, parts. It grew out of them. What you're seeing here is the remnants of Adeptus Mechanicus exploratory blatteship "Sin of Prometheus", sent to hunt and capture live tyranid specimens. Needless to say, the hunt didn't go as well as planned.

I still need to add some details on claws, textures on red parts and shading&highlighting.

GW used to sell raptor pads a few years ago, but I don't think they do anymore. They were sold as mentors pads though.

Late reply, but I feel you so much. I spent a shocking amount of time on my own Chaos Daemons (I am a newbie, so my paintjobs aren't nearly as good as yours, but they have gotten a lot better) and finally decided to pay a visit to the FLGS. While there were some guys who had put some effort into it, most of the people I saw were kids who had just spray painted their armies one color. One guy even had a Thunderhawk spray painted red, with the cockpits still unprimed grey. The hobby is what seperates minis wargames from your average strategy fare, and makes it special. Glad to see someone who appreciates that.

You will want to do some intense shading on each armor panel too. I have seen some to it by using shades of grey then glazing over the panels. One tutorial I have seen uses a white crayon for higlights before airbrushing. Also drop name.

>>
>>47342436
Just remove flash and file like normal. Then prime like normal.
You will want to give it a clear coat when finished painting even more so than with plastic or resin as the paint is more likely to get chipped off on a metal miniature.

Otherwise, pretty standard.

That is easy to do. A file can make things more precise and uniform(high grit sandpaper perhaps for softer materials). You can probably get away with just a knife if you want, but some cuts can be a little lumpy and uneven.

Bone coloured bikers might look neat. Maybe with black helmets or something. Maybe I'd do a Terminator black with a bone helmet and shoulder pads. Maybe I'll get yelled at for that....
But it sure would look neat! ;)
>>
>>47342297
Well you could embrace the effect and rationalize it as chaos corruption. Maybe go over it with a wash to emphasize it a bit.

>>47342309
You can't see it in that photo, but he posted a close up last thread and they have a very rough texture to the armor. Personally I thought it looked kind of neat, looked porous like bone or something.

How does one paint a bone color? I have an urge to buy the $10 snapfit gaunts and paint them completely bone color, except for the eyes and flesh/muscle bits that you can see in them.
>>
>>47342926
Color schemes change over the years, anon, just look up the old Minotaurs scheme. I went with the brown version for the chart because it's a color that's underrepresented among SM's, like orange.
>>
>>47343189
>>47343203
Could just be that it's an older version of the scheme, or they're both wrong.

Either way, the pic in >>47342926 is an official pic/newest version.

Not going to lie though, Ice Cream marines look delicious.
>>
>>47343230
I spray a bone color over black primer, then use a diluted ink to emphasize shadowed spots.
>>
>>47343263

>>47343239
Ah, I see. You make a good point, brown and orange is underrepresented.
>>
>>47343263
Feels kind of derogatory to call them ice cream marines, but I appreciate the pun. You could fluff it as being a splinter force that broke off from the main chapter, or a colorscheme unique to one company, or something like that.
>>
>>47343028
That does sound pretty neat! You're basically making it up as you go along with most of the less famous successor chapters anyway so any fluff autists won't have much of a leg to stand on.
>>
>>47342297
These are well done, be proud.
>>
>>47343303
Terribly sorry if it seemed that way!

I've always called them the Ice Cream marines ever since I saw their scheme a few months ago, it's just that it's the first time I've seen the newer black and white scheme. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the scheme, and I like the other scheme as well.
>>
>>47342297
Overall I lke how they look. They're definitely tabletop quality, I like the mix between early, almost non-heretical looking armor and the later Chaos Marine styles. I also like how the sergeants have red shoulderpads, and how the plasma guns are brass and orange.

The only thing I'd have a problem with is lack of variety in weapon color or markings on armor, but that's just because I think of Chaos Marines has being half-scavenged and really personalized, a bunch of individuals rather than an organized force. I may not like topknot marines much, but I'd include a few because they'd personalize their stuff like that.
>>
>>47343376
Friendly reminder the word bearers are still a legion
>>
>>47343376
Much appreciated. There's a lot more brass on the weapons but the lighting may have fucked it up somewhat. I'm keeping my dudes a bit less randomized. mostly just dirty and in some disrepair/corruption.
I may add a squad of topknots later on, though. You're right on my lack of variation. could be that's what's been bugging me.
>>

It's cool - it's just one of those names that can be affectionate or insulting, like Ultrasmurfs or Dank Gayngles. Context is important, I guess. I never noticed they looked like vanilla and chocolate until you pointed it out - I just thought brown and bone.

They're my personal favorite Imperial Fists successor just on colorscheme alone, so I take it kind of personally.

>>47343455
Yeah, but Chaos still generally thrives on personal identity and individuality, since that's what makes them so different from their loyalist counterparts.

>>47343463
I also noticed that all of them are wearing helmets, but I can understand wanting protection. You could also add some markings onto the armor - the fact that it's mostly white means you could add some colorful tattoos for the slaaneshi squad. You could also add some Eye of Horus or Star of Chaos symbols or something, sort of like pic related.
>>
>>47343594
Chaos is a spectrum, you can totally have a coherent renegade chapter that removed their recruiting cap and rules about bioweapons and stuff that everyone is on board with.

A ton of Ral Partha minis.
1st print Space Hulk.
A ton of old GW minis.
AD&D books: players, dm's, monster manual, fiend folio, tons of FR and other modules/splatbooks.
~$5000+ worth of comic books.

Late reply, but I can help you!

Take that basecoat and wash it in Reikland Fleshshade. Then, hit the cheeks, nose, and the high bits of the hands with the base color again. Based Duncan would call this a 'layer' highlight and add in some freehand highlights on top, but I like the more muted appearance; it looks good both close up and at three feet, letting the natural light provide a highlight. Pic related.

No problem. If you're wondering, that model's using a combination of highlighting techniques.

I can't stand freehand highlights (they look too brushed on) so for the fabric and flesh I left it at the layered highlight, and the armor is faintly drybrushed. The gunmetal and leather bits aren't highlighted at all.

The white is just layered. I think overall it creates a very crisp appearance.

Thoughts on using Eisenkern Stormtroopers with female heads, tabards, cloaks, and GW weapons as Sisters of Battle? I'm not really a fan of the Valkir models a lot of people seem to be using; they're too big and don't really match the aesthetic of the rest of the army.

Or does anyone know of any other potential SoB models? My requirements are no pewter, no heels, and fully clothed. I'm maybe okay with goofy poses as long as their weapons are pointed in the right direction.

The Eisenkern tend to look too thin for power armored blokes in 40k. The Valkir line from Dreamforge has proportions much closer to 40k. Just replace the heads and guns and you're in business.
>>
>>47346703
Okay so..I am no expert, and I have never painted human models, I may not be an expert...but I think the major issue you have is thinning your paints, they look very splotched on. Also it looks like you drybrushed metalic paint over the whole thing, did you? Only reason I could have for why everything is so damn glittery. It also looks like you'll need to really work on your control, since a lot of details, most likely combined with too thick of paint and lack of control, are just mushed together. Also look up tutorials and tips on painting faces. Did you use any washes too, or highlighting?
>>
>>47348709
This has been going on for years you silly.
I put 1p under my models and it makes a worlld of difference, they fall a lot less.
>>
>>47348869

>>
>>47348837
Yeah I should probably thin my paints better, but when I do, paint just doesn't seem to "stick". And nah I didn't drybrush metallic, the lighting just seems to reflect things more and it's not actually that glittery. And yeah I should definitely look at control. I used Nuln Oil but that's it.
>>
>>47348374
It looks like you dry brushed everything. Try layering with thinned down paints. To get less of a grainy look.
>>
>>47348882
So if I want smooth paint, I should thin my silver and just do multiple coats until its thick/bold enough?

>>
>>47349126
I am using vallejo myself and I think it's pretty decent... So if you don't mind me asking: what's bothering you about it?
>>
>>47348881
The best thing you can do is maybe take an empty sprue and practice the consistency of your paints. Usually when I paint I take a small dab of paint and just dip my brush in my washing water and use that, one little dip usually provides enough water for my paints, but again, practice is key to getting the right technique.

Getting the paint consistency and control down will clean your work up a ton, and when you get to a comfortable stage look into highlighting things, so you can make the details really pop.
>>
>>47348940
You can never thin your paints out too much, remember that. If it becomes too watery, it just becomes a wash, which can still be of use. Thin it down to your liking, and apply smooth, uniform layers across the parts, multiple if need be to get a proper smooth finish.

I wish you'd done some filing and filling on the seams on the legs and chimneys, but otherwise looking good.

Heraldry patterns on the knees looking good.

I'm using it for an action figure and it rubs off easily.

Change your water when swapping from metallics to normal- there's silver all up in his tabard.
>>
>>47349221
>You can never thin your paints out too much, remember that. If it becomes too watery, it just becomes a wash, which can still be of use.

This is exactly how we got Red and Grey marines guy, not to mention being wrong. Overdiluted paint and washes are quite different.

>>47348940
Yes thin your silver down.
Expect to do multiple coats to get it to be opaque, but remember to control how much is on your brush as well, so you don't get a big drop of thinned paint that you can't control on the model.

I'd drop the gold backpack as well, and go with silver.
>>
>>47349332
Shut up you, thin your paints, never stop thinning them

WHY ARE YOUR PAINTS SO FAT, YOU DISGUSTING FAT FUCK, YOU WILL NEVER BE THIN, YOU WILL NEVER BE BEAUTIFUL, THIN THEM, THIN THEM MORE, MORE MORE, NEVER STOP THINNING THEM OR THEY WILL NEVER LOVE YOU, NEVER EVER LOVE YOU

My mother just threw mine in the bin... there was a boxed copy of Titan Legions in there with an Imperator Titan and two Mega Gargants. Still, when we moved house she sold a huge box of WW2 helmets my dad had collected for £10.... Most of those were worth £100 to £150 EACH.... and she sold a box of 15 for £10.

Parents.... we love em, but they kinda suck sometimes.

There was no ork unit that I didn't enjoy paiting.
>>
>>47344371
Don't leave your shit at someone else's house when you live some where else. If you didn't want it being thrown away you shouldn't of left it in someone else's care.
>>
>>47349559
This is why I am glad I have parents who save my shit no matter what. My mom still has binders of the shitty drawings I used to do when I was a little kid, and vehemently refuses to let me sell or give away any of my old toys or legos, telling me to keep them until I have kids so I can pass my stuff on to them

>Try not to get hairs stuck in his guts
>Guts could do with deeper shadows and being shiny
>Experiment with purples as well as browns when washing the flesh, check out some references.
>Change something when moving from flesh to bones around ribcage
>Is that detail on his chest not a shirt or something pushed up high to let him do the belly slit?

Do you guys thin your metallics?
>>
>>47349791
Use Vallejo air metallics, they are pre thinned for airbrushing so you will be fine with them.

I usually heavy wash a dark color over the areas with metals and then drybrush the metallics over top
>>
>>47349791
Yes, but nowhere near as much as I do other colours as they separate a lot easier.

Thanks! I know it is hard to read from the picture but I will take a top down pic later.

I am definitely tapping into a heavy metal thing with that mini, but I am trying to get a Gothic horror vibe as well. My inspiration is partly Ghost B.C.

call down you fucking poor faggot. no, not even that, just a knee jerk reaction moron. 20 guys is a fucking dollar. use your brain.

Congrats on defending shitty jokes

If you fail a joke, you walk away. If you explain a joke, you have failed twice.
>>
>>47349642
That is a fair point. Don't use people as free storage facilities. If it's free, they don't care.
>>
>>47349938
I think the problem some people have with metallics is they think it should take one coat, and only one coat, and so slop it on more (relatively).
>>
>>47349844
Kill dog.

Simple, what are you, a retarded faggot autistic fat white knife spreglord basic bitch?

Other than that, my dog isn't allowed in the hobby area and I have a dust devil. Clean and organize frequently.

>white knife

You fucking white knife!

>This ones for you, honky!

>>47350161
With GW metallics, I find there are far fewer consistencies between 'THICK' and totally separated, but the problem is less bad when mixing them with non metallics.

I certainly can't thin a GW metallic as far as a VMA metallic.

My hobby area is my bedroom, and my bedroom is my dogs favorite space (though shes been grumpy since I re-arranged my room since she cant sleep by my feet while im at my desk anymore)
I do plan on getting a new vacuum though.

What is it with confused anons not knowing why they're called "flush cutters" and not "pliers." Resin is, and always was, a shitty material for model making. as
>>47332795
ably demonstrates.
