>>
Dark Grey space wolves guy.

Should I do my wulfen skin as flesh tones or MOAR GREY?
I'd probably try a lightergrey to contrast with the armor plates.
Shoulder pads will be crimson with gold trim.

I worry that if I do flesh tones, that won't be able to blend hair tufts in well.

>>47237376
I don't play 40k anymore, but I love the models, so this is probably what I'll end up doing. I'm not sure what kind of diorama, though. I had in mind the two charging against each other guns blazing, but the legs are a bit too stiff to get any real sense of motion.
>>
>>47237459
Instead of having them charging, why not try to show them both standing still, deactivated as they both faught to death.
Make them an IF and IW.

What's the size of the top portion of the 130mm GW base?
>>
>>47237431
Looks like an olive, layered with kakhi and glazed with browns.
I reverse image searched the picture, you could try asking the guy who painted it in the first place on his blog.
>>
>>47237548
That'd be kind of cool, actually. It feels like I'd want plastic kits for that so I could make some cool battle damage, but just painting them properly might be enough.
>>
>>47237747
Yeah, the whole problem comes from the fact that they're so rigid and blocky, so it's hard to make them a bit hunched at to show they're dead.
Have their weapons pointed down, like the loyalist was on the pic. Or look at th3 way the dreadnought slumps down when he dies in DoW 1.
>>
>>47237856
I think you could do a diorama of them facing off and about to fight, like they're long-standing bitter enemies.

Bonus points if DA and Fallen.
>>
>>47237703
130mm/13cm diameter, what the fuck else?
>>
>>47238082
He is talking about the top. All of the GW bases have little bevels. The bottom of the base is 130mm while the top is smaller.
>>
>>47238082
That what's the diameter of the bottom of the base? You do realize the GW bases have a lip and the bottom diameter is larger than the top of the base, right? So I want to make sure of the diameter of the top bit, on which models stand on, not the bottom of the base, which is flared out.

Probably won't do Dark Angels and Fallen. The chassis are a bit too neutral to do either of them justice, I think. It'll probably be Imperial Fists/Iron Warriors or Ultramarine/Word Bearer or something like that. I like your idea, at any rate. It was what I had in mind originally.

Measure lip.
Compare that to the 130mm diameter shown in the image. Work out X knowing that lip is a portion of the outer lips radius of 65mm.

This is dang easy and any formula you would need is readily available online.

Basecoating done!

Question for you all, I'm doing that "layer washes on a steel basecoat" technique. How to fix my inexitable fuckups?
>>
>>47241233
First of all, you should start with a really shiny silver undercoat.
I am the metallic Thousand Sons guy that has been posting recently (and the multi armed DPoTz).
I use Krylon Metallic Silver Primer+Paint spray paint as the basecoat.
The next key is to thin your washes with Lahmian Medium and do multiple layers. This will add depth, but avoid the pooling you have here.
If you want I can take a pic of my painting log book of my process. Walking my hound meow.
>>
>>47239964
Won't that be too glow-y? We're talking Blood Ravens red.
>>
So I recently came into some old metal 40k minis and I've noticed something: they have mold lines!
How do you even get rid of mold lines on metal models?

Does anybody know of a place that sells souped up engine blocks like this, that would fit into a 28mm model, like an Ork Trukk for example?

>>47241798
You can scrape them with a knife and sand them or use some fine files.
>>
>>47241888
Oh my poor hobby knife. Thank you, I have the knife and sandpaper, so I'll go with that.
>>
>>47241233
Thats not really a technique.
Putting thin layers of translucent or 'clear' colors over a bright metallic is probably what you're thinking off.
Using undiluted washes on top of a color or each other is just gross.

http://taleofpainters.blogspot.de/2014/08/tutorial-how-to-paint-fire-flame.html

same principle I guess. Just paint the recessed areas brighter so they look hotter and the raised areas, progressively darker.
How dark you end up should depend on how glowy and transparent you want the flesh to look like.

Holy shit do we live in an age where people haven't handled metal minis?

Your hobby knife is significantly harder steel than the pewter minis (unless it's helldoradofor some crazy reason).
You can actually slice and shave off the surface of the metal.

Also replacement blades are dirt cheap, you should be replacing the blade every few sessions anyway.

Be really careful of your fingers.
>>
>>47244327

Hey newfag, marines have always gotten the most support, even when they weren't the newest or strongest army. They've always been popular and sold well. The fucking setting is based around them. They are the Jedi and Storm Troopers and Darth Vader of Star Wars combined.

I'm sorry if you don't like that, but just sit back for the ride and be glad non-marine factions even exist.

Trying to get started on a project, long story short I'm trying to go for a "Corruption in progress" type of Diorama.

would like to know if people can suggest Feathered wings and Bat like wings from models that are roughly the same size and would fit the Scale of a Daemon Prince or models slightly smaller?

(Trying to look beyond DE Scourge wings. because reasons...)

>>
>>47246015

I'm aware of that, lots of beautiful models out there.

Problem is the project I'm working on is asking for 1 wing being Feathered and the other being Bat/Dragon-like on the other side, I know my way around conversions, but can never accurately judge the size and scale of model parts until I get my hands on them.

The focus of my project in a nutshell is a character that's been tricked into making a deal with chaos, thinking he'll become an angel but instead being transformed into a Daemon.

(It sounds daft when I put it like that, but how many Idea's sound awesome first time out of your head? :P)

I used to do this, too.

When people snarked, I'd point at their lush green bases and say, "My boys don't always get to play on a bowling green, but their shadows follow them wherever they go."

But, more recently, with the influx of more plastic figs into the army, I took to weighting the bases with flat washers on the bottom and parakeet gravel on the top, so I just went ahead and based the lot like that to keep a unified theme - and I like it.

But I'm still not tempted to give anybody shit for liking the Shadow Look.

Some may list him under official name of Brother Craig.

You're more likely to find one searching "Warhammer rogue trader marine" or something like that and have to sit and look through the auctions and try and pick it out in the picture.

I was really lucky. Saw a listing for Njal Stormcaller for £3 with a broken staff. Looked to be nosey. In the listing the guy said he had a load of stuff to sell and check other items.
I did because he coud have been selling some treasure.
Lo and behold, Brother Craig for £7 with postage.

Quite happy with what I got, some tiny flash here and there, but it can be easily be removed by simply pulling on it with your fingers if you don't have clippers.
Shields are good as well, I'll probably have to cut a bit of the wrist from the Stormcasts to make it fit nicely. A tad smaller than what I would have wanted, but it'll do nicely for my hoplites Stormcasts idea I have.

>>
>>47248427
Primarily because I don't play 40k. I also love to build models, and I always assemble my Warmachine/Horde stuff as quickly as I can (And my painting backlog is considerable as a result)

It's mostly because those two models are older than I am, so I want to do something with them that I'll be happy putting on the shelf afterwards. The loyalist Dreadnought was painted a while back, and I used it in at least a few games before I quit 40k, but I stripped it once I decided I was going to do -something- with it.

The Chaos Dreadnought I bought as a compliment to the loyalist one, simply because I wanted both. I considered purchasing an ye olde Wraithlord and Deff Dread too, but they're no where as cool and fucking expensive.

>Like what's the model actually called.

Apocryphal texts from before the Dark Age of Technology refer to the model as "Brother Craig" - so named for actress Yvonne Craig, who played Batgirl on the old Adam West Batman TV serial. Yes, there are also Brother (Adam) West, Brother (Burt) Ward, Brother (Frank) Gorshin, Brother (Burgess) Meredith, etc.

For some reason, Brother Craig is not in the blue 1990 catalogue. If he ever had an official part number, I have never seen it.

I mostly use Vallejo due to its colour range, the fact that it comes in dropper bottles and the store being just a few blocks away from home.

If you go for Vallejo, I'd urge you to buy any metallics from their airbrush range, they're a pleasure to use and not as thick as the game color range.

One of the FLGS I frequent carries them, same with most modeling hobby stores in town.

Forgot to mention, most of the brands I mentioned come with more paint than GW and at a lower price.

Wouldn't really advice getting the large paint case, I just buy whichever colours I need at the moment, haven't spent a lot and still have all I need so far.

Remember to go for the game colour and game air ranges, they're both more resistant to constant handling and have more vivid colours compared to their model colour range.

That table is a godsend to compare and match different paint ranges, if you choose to get stuff from various brands it's always helpful.

I'm about to start painting the tau starter box, after several years away from the hobby.

I wanted to find a tutorial for painting a green tau scheme, but:

>every tau painting tutorial is for either the standard or white color scheme

>>
>>47254271
Kind of. Of course you can use muted colours on a Space Marine and make him look a bit more gritty and realistic. It's all about personal preferance and what feel you want your models to have.
>>
>>47252932
>Citadel
Good paints that are easy to use, but come with a premium price

>Vallejo
Premium priced a-la-carte, but cheap in bundles. Their dropper bottles are notoriously hard to shake, but if you put a plastic bead in the bottle it mixes quite easily.

I can't stress that point enough; if you don't mix Vallejo very thoroughly the paint will be a disaster.

Which colors to use isn't as obvious as GW paints, so make sure you get the right colors. Nothing it worse than having to do a million coats because you bought a transparent red by mistake.

>p3
haven't used them, don't know

>Army painter
The basics and the classics, at a lower price. Still good, but might not have what you are looking for.

Like Vallejo, they use dropper bottles, so drop a bead into the bottle to make shaking it up easier.
>>
>>47254331

I don't have beads. Can I use a small piece of cut up sprue instead?
>>
>>47252932
>>47254331
>p3
P3 paints are mostly good quality. They're opaque and have nice coverage. They've also got a relatively cheap price. Unfortunately there aren't as many different paints to choose from as say Citadel or Vallejo have, and the paints can are a bit chalky so the bottle lids need to be cleaned every now and then, though some colours less/more than others.

Overall they're pretty good. A natural choice if you wan't to do Privateer Press' studio schemes.
>>
>>47254395
>Can I use a small piece of cut up sprue instead?
yep, you can use anything (sprue, space marine helmets, pebbles, etc)

just don't use any metal that might oxidize and affect the color of the paint
>>
>>47254331
>Their dropper bottles are notoriously hard to shake
Protip: roll the bottles. Don't shake them.

Any paint that isn't mixed correctly is gonna be 'a disaster'.

Vallejo paints are very nice, but they feel different from citadel. Dry a little faster, but they are so incredibly smooth. Feels like a are painting with puppy ears.

I'd add that while the dropper model can be harder to mix, it's easier to get the desired amount of paint on the pallet, and will not result in losing an entire pot of paint because you didn't seal it properly.

Also, there are two lines of vallejo paint, in my experiance they have the same qualities as paint, though they have slightly different color ranges.

early in the build for converting a Farseer into an Inquisitor

While I can easily replace the entire chest plate, the back plate is going to need a lot of work.

>Option 1
Dremel down the back ridge and shoulders and try to smooth it out with green stuff

>Option 2
Like option 1, but cover with the sheath for the sword. This is awkward though because though Grey Knight swords are so large.

>Option 3
Try for some kind of backpack. The scout pack I have is a little small. The Vox backpack as-is won't work, but might pass with some modification.

No matter what I will chose I will have to also deal with the shoulders though,

Cutting at the hands to remove the Eldar charms and the ridges on the backs of the hands is going to very delicate work.

as of 6th ed it's all powered by pain.
Personally I think it's BS because now they don't kill and torture people because they are depraved sensation junkies, but because inflicting pain is basically part of their medical and industrial process.

Which is sad, because I like the fluff that expands on the scope of the dark city, it's industry and resource, and basically making them being able to field armies at all make even a bit of sense.

>>
>>47255691
I think the modern DE can still get suffering out if the soul for nourishment
>>
>>47255813
That is likely true, but that's just another form of eating pain. The specific 'eating souls to hold of Slaanesh', which was a thing, is no longer a thing. That is gone now.

As are refrences to Dark Eldar specifically loving to prey on their craftworld kin for stuff. They're weapons don't use corrupted wraithbone etc. Dark eldar and craftworld eldar are battle brothers now.

Both Sigmarines and modern terminators are about 1.3 Johnnies tall. Sigmarines are generally even taller, but it would depend on whether you're using generic squadboyz, chapter-specific models, or heroic special characters in tactical dreadnought armour.

That's brush soap that the factory put on it to protect it and keep the tip sharp. It washes off with water. You'll have to buy your own brush soap and do it again if you want it to stay sharp when dry. It should stay sharp by itself when wet because it was shaped to a sharp edge by the brush cleaner.

What's something interesting I can do for a Leman Russ Tank Commander? There's an building event tomorrow for Tank Shock at my local shop and while it's not a competition, the next event is a painting competition so I want to do something attention grabbing. I have the command tank sprue that comes in the Tech Command box so that may help. I might give it the Punisher cannon and attempt a heat effect.

>>
>>47257215

How it works is you rinse your brush, then get the brush and soap wet, then "paint" a little water on the cake of soap. This will lather up like a real bar of soap. Leather your bristles and it will remove all the paint and gunk from your brush. Then rinse the lather off your brush.

Repeat the process. When you're done cleaning, instead of rinsing the lather, gently wipe it off on a paper towel until it's dry, being sure to wipe in such a way that your bristles make a sharp point. It will have some invisible soap on it that makes the bristles stiff and keeps the brush pointy. This is the stiffness that you felt when you opened your brush.

If you don't do things like pre-shade or OSL with an airbrush, it's indistinguishable from a rattle can or paintbrush job. Unless you do fades for things like weathering or zenithal, which spray cans and crappy single action sprayguns can also do.
>>
>>47258288
I'm more concerned with putting it on too thick from with a spraycan on accident. With an airbrush I feel like i'd have more control plus it's thinner by nature
