First for GW paints are better quality and value than Vallejo.

really nice fleshtones and blending.
At first I thought the brone on thethe blue/grey bits awas a mistake, but it actually looks really good.

The hammer could use a little more shading or color contrast on the shaft and warp. It doesn't look bad, but against the quality of the rest of the model it stands out as very flat.

Like the cloth too, what did you do for that? Starting to paint up some cloth and robes and could use tips.

Hey thanks for the comment, this dude is about 50% done at the most and you're right the Hammer shaft needs work I havent even started on it yet.

All I've done for the cloth there was a few coats of milky Khorne Red, and then two medium thinned washes of Nuln oil, I want to repeat the effect I had on this miniature.

This was probably five or so washes of nuln oil i think

Moving forward with my gangly armed CSM-DPoT.

>#A
Squished out some GS and placed it over the back of the wire.
>#B
Same for the forearm.
Pressed these around the wire on all 3 right arms with my fingers, then did some initial smoothing with a metal sculpting tool covered in vaseline.
>#C & #D
Further smoothing done with a firm rubber headed cone shaped sculpting tool.
Formed elbows as well.

The 2 other left arms will now be done and then I will add muscles once these have cured.

Most definitely. But, I do have the 4 image thing down to a pretty near keyboard shortcut science and I am sure I could make a gif again much faster than the first time.

WIP Raven Guard tacticals. Middle is the standard bearer. Took me a while but I'm pleased with the gold and the freehand Raven.

Right is the sergeant, his pteruges ended up a bit too red so I decided to go with the punkish kilt and Mohawk combo.

Left is just another bolter guy.

The OSL on their eyes looks quite good in person.
Once I get them on the base I'm gonna weather those fuckers up, that is also why they have minor line highlights, as it can look quite awkward after powders.

Only arms bases and backpacks remaining and then I'll have finished my first ever 10-man squad.

How do I model huge banners?

I wanna have huge banners on my chaos spacemarines but I'm not sure how to model
A) The marine holding the banner
B) If I should make the banner from plasticard or greenstuff.

If you have a heat gun you can make a nice strong banner.

Heat the cut out banner until pliable then drape it over a few objects that will give you the folds you want. Pencils and rocks are good for that.

Then heat the top edge and wrap it over your banner pole.
You can even add designs with thinner plasticard over the top.

For marines I either have them holding it in one of the pistol arms for a more static pose. Or I weaponise the baner with a blade on the bottom and make it look like they fight with it.
Third option is to mount it on their power pack.

Any advice on technique for beginners? I've painted one mini so far and it looks like absolute shit. I feel like I got impatient and rushed it? My problem seems to be not spreading the paint evenly enough.

I feel like, i'm trying to cover every part with a base paint, and then it ends up getting thicker and thicker and then some details start to get lost.

I don't have a picture right now, but are there any general tips on technique?

Have you watched many Duncan's tutorials?
Have you cleaned your moldlines?
Have you thinned your paints?
Have you made sure you don't have too much paint on the brush?
>>
>>47230672
A pic would be helpful. But get used to thinning your paints with a little water. Especially if youre losing details. Also dont use your brush completely loaded with a glob of paint. Wipe some off so the brush comes to a fine point. And be patient as well. Especially starting out

Go to Warhammer TV on youtube and check out the tutorials.

Make sure you are priming your miniatures. With primer. Regular paint is not the same as primer.

You will want to be using a palette and thinning your paints with a little water. Don't use the paint straight from the pot.

Expect for it to take more than one coat to cover your primer. Wait for the first coat to dry before applying the second.
>>
For those of you lads that paint Skitarii.
Guy's tutorial are good, used them to for my orks. I'm jelly of his mastery of the paint straight from the pot, even though he showed how to thin it down while in the pot.

It's because you take the photo with your phonethe wrong way. Crop your pics even a little, that'll put them back into place when posting.

>>

Take a smallish, shallow plastic sandwich (square) container. Fold a paper towel into a square that fits neatly inside it. Cut a square of parchment paper (available at all grocery stores) to fit directly over that. Pour water over top slowly until it runs down and dampens the paper towel. A little on the parchment is good too. Congratulations you now own the most important tool for your painting career...a wet palette!

Transfer paints from the pots to this palette and thin them down a bit before you use them on your mini. The wet palette will help the paints stay thin and not dry out. When you load your brush use the bare minimum and be sure to drag it across the wet palette for a nice pointy tip.

Like, I'm not being intentionally unkind telling you to strip it, but trying to save a model from many years ago by painting over an already thick paintjob is not going to have a happy resolution.

Either stripping it or starting off with new models (infantry are good for practice because even if you don't do a great job on one, at least it's painted and you can come back to it when you've done everything) will give better results and let you learn to paint well.

This model was meant to take the plastic "Strike Force" arms that were ubiquitous throughout Second Edition. They are markedly different from later plastic Space Marine arms.

>I don't really feel like giving him a chainsword to recreate the original, just complete him so that I can paint him.

The original came with the Ultramarine Tactical Squad at the tail end of First Edition. Your choices were Phobos-pattern bolt gun or combat knife. Later, this model was made available in a blister by itself, sometimes with a half a sprue of close combat weapons for variety, other times with a character sprue that had a bolt pistol on it.

Nah, I've never posted about mine. They're pretty much a stolen idea taken from here a while back, for a chapter called the Free Company. I like to think of them as working similar to the Deathwatch, taking Marines as tithes and volunteers, and they work with the Rogue Traders as hired muscle and adjudicators. I have a mid-tone grey color schme for them, with light yellow left kneed pad and backpack vents, dark red lining on the right should pad, and original chapter shoulder pad on the left.
Might see if I can take a decent picture of the prototype I painted up earlier and post it.

Posted an earlier shot of my first Necron Scythe in the General yesterday to a bunch of mixed reviews but I did take the advice of "browning that shit up more" since the wings were completely silver before. I think it made it look much better.

Unfortunately the actual Necrons I have painted I thinned the metallics wrong and they look... not so great.

The Necrons are blue (Guillimens glaze over Army Painter Platemail) and I am using Warplock Bronze, Gehenna's Gold and three different steel/silvers. The solid blues are Teclis and Caledor Sky.

Didn't really pay attention to the whole base and layer thing.

This is the biggest model I painted as luckily my friend is letting me paint and play these till I buy them.

I've just learned that you're not trolling and in the US it is commonplace to refer to all shelled reptiles as "turtles".

In the rest of the world, it is specified that turtles are aquatic and have flippers.
Tortoises are land dwellers that cannot swim and have legs with claws.
They also wear raspberries as hats.

And for anyone interesting, I actually use house paint samples from Home Depot for doing my bases. The exact same paints that I do my table and terrain with.

$5 a "small" pot mixed in whatever colours you require.

My planet is a burnt out ashen wasteland that has a deep brownish red earth. Exposed rocks are done with the "Tawny Port" (think red wine - port) with shades of green and brown to simulate moss and such. The smaller stones and upper substrate is darker, done "Raven Black," dry brushed "Tawny Port" and then dry brushed "Milestone" (the grey). This creates just a hint of the natural red earth, while giving the effect of dusty ash over the surface.
Kinda Terminator Judgement day over a red earth. The ashes of a billion dead.

Goddamn, where is Duncan!

It was Daemonette Hide base (over black)
Then a druchii violet + medium wash

It really doesn't matter that she's a girl, I know you think it does but it doesn't.

It doesn't matter if you think she's attractive or not, I know you think it does but it doesn't.

Her paint jobs are average, they'd get 3 or 4 out of 10 on CMON...

This is fine if you are an incredibly new or bad painter but Duncan paints models for the studios and hers do not.

calthan brown base,
snakebite leather,
2:1 snakebite leather : bleached bone,
1:1 snakebite leather : bleached bone,
1:2 snakebite leather : bleached bone,
bleached bone.

work it up on all the brighter areas to a very small bleached bone highlight, it doesnt look too good just now because these colours dont bring out the detail much

then use 1:1 dark flesh: black watered down alot like a wash and just put it in the recesses etc, then do it again with pure black.

then a yellow glaze all over it and finish with pure white highlights

That isn't happening unfortunately. This is technically my first army (even if it isn't mine yet) so I don't want to strip things and mess it up even worse. I really just want to play a game with a fully painted army.

The brown is actually a bronze and looks more metallic than this picture lets on.

>>47235263

Any North Americans have a sealer they use for their models?

I have heard the gloss ones work better but there was no evidence with that.

Once you seal the model it is a done deal, right?

Can you later strip it?
>>
>>47235711
Gloss dries slower and thicker, that's why it comes out glossy.

If you want your minis to be really tough use a gloss and then a matte.

You can still strip them but try to do touch ups after you've sealed them always looks out of place.

Better off asking that in the 40k general as WIP is more for painting and modeling.

But yea the start collecting is pretty decent and I wish I could bring Stalkers in my infantry heavy reclamation legion, so much so that I am looking into the Justicars Battalion or whatever it is called with the praetorians on the stalker. The main problem with stalkers are that experienced players who know how to face them will target them quickly, which has its ups and downs.
