>>
>>47231735
Magic is inherently illogical. I play it up as terrifying force that is beyond mortal control. This is also why i hate magic as science - you cannot apply rules to magic, because if you apply rules, they should correspond to real world. There's nothing in magic that is "real world".

Mechs aren't magic. They are built by people, and, therefore, should follow the laws of physics and be realistic. And realistically, tanks beat mechs.
>>
>>47231824
>Mechs aren't magic.
>>
>>47231833
Mechs aren't unless you apply dumb anime rules, but if you do you might as well make everything consist of marshmallows and rainbows because real-world physics do not apply anymore.

>>47231809

>>47231824
If you're willing to suspend your disbelief enough to play with magic it isn't too much of a stretch to imagine a setting where material science has advanced enough beyond our own to reduce some of the disadvantages of mechs. That being said, bipedal mechs are stupid.

>>

>it isn't too much of a stretch to imagine a setting where material science has advanced enough beyond our own to reduce some of the disadvantages of mechs.
The problem is, with same advancements tanks will still be superior. Mechas are just stupid and farther you try to justify it, the farther we go into marshmallows and rainbows territory.

>>47231878
Some sci-fi irks me, that's true. Fantasy is fine when it's low fantasy with magic that is completely detached from reality.
>>
>>47231709
The only other option is you're legitimately mentally handicapped, so let's assume that instead.

We know they're unrealistic, impractical and silly. We LIKE that they're unrealistic, impractical and silly. They're fun, they look cool to us, and if we're here for mechs we're not here for realism. IT's the same thing as wanting to play in a game like 40k, Star Wars or D&D where there's actual magic and giant firebreathing lizards and demons and shit.

This might be hard for you, but just because someone likes something silly it doesn't mean they're some uneducated inferior plebeian who doesn't understand how silly they're being. It's a difference of opinion over whether someone likes fantasy and suspending disbelief for the sake of a good time or not.

You are not better than other people who don't share your opinions, and they aren't better than you. The dick-waving you're attempting by coming into a thread for people who like something just to talk shit about it, however, is at best retarded and going to just make us take the time to talk down to you like the child you're making yourself out to be or assume you're just here pretending to be retarded.

Logically, a haptic feedback system of control with a virtual reality sensory array is inherently more plausible and more effective than any other method of control for a war machine that is not a space craft, as it allows the user to react far faster and with more control than any other system of combat, thus meaning a humanoid format for war machines is logically more useful and capable than any other design for a war machine.

If you actually wanted to use logic.

>>
>>47231934
Sure, but there are still plenty of issues with building humanoid mechs.
>>
>>47231936
The governing rules of magic work on plot device and author necessity. This includes magic which makes no sense and for which the rules are seeming arbitrary and meaningless (Roger Zelazney's Changeling, Harry Potter, Tarot by Tanith Lee, The Thomas Covenant Chronicles, Greg Bear's Songs of Earth and Power, etc., all of whihc present magic as an undefinable and somewhat controllable force that has arbitrary restrictions for different people that may or may not apply to other people).

In other words, there are plenty of non-scientific systems of magic, but you will never find them in RPGs or in any books where there is an RPG made of it.
>>
>>47231920
>This might be hard for you, but just because someone likes something silly it doesn't mean they're some uneducated inferior plebeian who doesn't understand how silly they're being. >>
>>47231055
I love 'em all.

My preferences trend towards machines that are portrayed as military but still leaps and bounds above other forces - NEXTs, for example, where yeah, tanks and stuff exist but core combat is mech-on-mech and everything moves and acts on a scale that makes them feel larger-than-life. I'm not a big fan of clunky, plodding machines that attempt to be realistic - it just makes the divide between them and actual military machines more wide as you wonder why these things ever came into prominence.

But anon! In that implied setting they absolutely play by the laws of physics. My mechs have 3 tiers.
Tier 1 is basically powered suits and body armor, crafted for specificed roles, infiltration, and heavy firepower on the battlefield
Tier 2 are about 10-15 ft bipedal tanks used for front line assault, sieges, and other offensive battle roles
Tier 3 are gundam sized used only in the most extraneous of circumstances as the last resort or as a military's trump card. think of them like flagships.

>>
>Muh realism
Guess what guys, mechs as a concept are not inherently shit. The problem is that army fags lack creativity and mech fags don't can't into engineering.

The idea that you use a massive walking robot to fight tanks is retarded, no one is replacing the tank, they're still useful and they work. Instead the mech is clearly meant for other roles.

In addition to still having conventional mobility like VOTOMs for normal movement over roads, feet allow for support vehicles to follow infantry into mountains and valleys. Infantry could also make use of the mech as a mobile crane and digger.

High silhouette can be used as an advantage as long as you can lower yourself; firing support weapons like ATGMs before lowering to a hull or turret down position to avoid incoming fire.

Finally, the mech actually turns out to be a rather handy radar and anti-air platform. They can position themselves better, fire and move faster to avoid counter attack, and would be able to reload faster with the use of arms.

>Ever heard of thing called "mythology"? Google it, it's enlightening.
But magic in myth does follow rules, you dumbfuck. Sure, myth don't elaborate on the mechanics of magic, but they do often describe the steps necessary to achieve specific magical effects. If you can repeat the same steps and always get the same effect, that means there is indeed some form of internal logic to magic.
I mean, fuck's sake, what do you think magical grimoires are? Most of them describe incredibly specific rituals, ways to perform them and the individual meaning or every part of the ritual and how they all connect.

One show that really nailed it for me was Overman King Gainer, which had both realistic-ish mechs that were clearly just mass-produced walking weapons platforms designed to support infantry squads with automatic fire or anti-tank weaponry, and then the Overmen who were weird, almost biological creatures with strange superpowers.

G Gundam has as its main villain a giant mecha that uses nanomachines to rebuild/regenerate things.

It went on a destructive rampage and used its nanomachines ('Devil Gundam Cells') to animate and enslave fighters from several nations, along with legions of unmanned robots. Thanks to the nanomachines they all have incredibly high regeneration that makes them difficult to defeat, necessitating excessive mecha kung fu.

G Gundam is basically a wuxia show pretending to be a giant robot tournament show.

Yes, Mech will never beat Tanks, but they will shit on anything LESS than a full MBT.

So one thing I think people overlook with mechs, is that they're probably Army: The Vehicle. Whereas the Marines are largely intended as an all out assault force, the Army is there to patrol occupied territory, to secure it, to combat disasters, etc. etc. A soldier isn't necessarily just the ultimate fighting machine, he's likely there to skilled or unskilled tasks in a situation where he can be attacked.

Mechs are perfect for combat engineering etc., loading and unloading, heavy lifting, setting up cover, righting tanks, etcetera.

Its not as "hardcore" if the mech is there to do stuff other than fight but I don't see the problem.

Gargantia on the Verduous Planet deals with this sort of thing, how useful mechs would be in times of peace as well as war.
>>
>>47237943
Just use fucking wheels or thrusters like a normal person.
>>
>>47237918
The setting delves into that including some latter models forgoing legs. Exo-armors are started life as combat space suits and just kept getting bigger, there's actual power armor as well but pilots find that frames are easier to understand and use and also look better for propaganda. It also helps that the machines are piloted by what amounts to a fullbody haptic feedback system called a linear frame or some such. Hell CEGA(earth) first basically took a thruster a cockpit and slapped a head on it and called it good.

We can design aircraft to be armored enough to avoid being taken out by a .50 at extended ranges, I'd at least expect an autocannon to be required to take it out.

Even if it isn't, we already operate lots of vehicles that can't take a .50; Humvee needed to be uparmored in order to protect it from assault rifle fire.
>>
>>47231824

But in real life there are no "laws of physics", we just make generalizations based on the experimental data we have and the mathematical abstractions we can come up with based on that data. In 200 years our understanding of physics and how to manipulate bodys based on it could be so different from our current physics that mecha could become the superior kind of war machine. If you are claiming that "our science is at the contemporary level and Mechs are still feasible" then that is unrealistic, but having a whole different physical paradigm that makes Mecha feasible due to our having more knowledge about the world is quite realistic. The physics and general scientific knowledge of the early 17th century didn't support aircraft being a feasible weapon, of course later physics and scientific knowledge did. Mecha is no different.
>>
>>47231561

>>
>>47240544
Yeah and they told you your helmets were rifle cartridge rated and then pistol caliber headshot casualties started piling.
>>47240280
It wouldn't though. Its much much larger so its profile is an issue, its weight would be building and stopping momentum is also an issue so again predictable trajectory and making it more armored would just slow it down more for shit like rocket propelled anything. You could also just damage the feet and leg joints which would be the weak areas which would cripple the mech. Flight just puts you in an area with nowhere to hide and shir aerodynamics would hinder dodging.

Front Mission Wanzers are the perfect size. Armored Core V had a very nice scale too, and one can easily place Scopedogs into this scale too for lighter versions. Heavy wanzers just have good armor, superheavy weapons platforms are very GITS or much like the added bosses in FM1's DS remake.

Units below Scopedog size start going the way of Tachikomas- they're very vehicular even when you consider the weapons. Below that you have exoskeletal stuff, or possibly just straight body mods/full-prosthesis, depending on how far into the future you fling your setting/the feel you're going for.

Gundams are way too fucking big and needlessly stylish, even if I still like some of them.

It's not the d20 system, they were originally planning on tweaking the Silhouette system to work with d20s instead of d6s, which is completely asinine. They eventually settled on doing d10s after considering to do d8s (which Sil WAS originally going to use back in the day when d6s were FAR more accessible) because it gave them a wider but still more controlled range of numbers to work with and is one of the more widely available die types.

Yeah but while those mecha are fighting said pilots are also trying to make sure they maintain a proper vector for thrust, not get too far from a ship so they dont run out of remass and making sure they're not gonna get blasted with radiation.

That said JC combat is fun as fuck with the right group of people.

I only get buttmad about giant robots when they're portrayed as superior to EVERYTHING ELSE, despite other vehicles being made with the same techbase.
>>
>>47248038
I do to an extent as well? But I like a healthy combined arms approach again why I like DP9's stuff they dont treat mecha as an end all be all and show that gears and exos are simply part of the warmachine and can easily be taken out by some machines especially fucking tanks. But, the terrain or enviroments favor the mechs and the tactics and battle doctrines in turn developed with them in mind.

This is why I really like Heavy Gear's approach. Tanks will FUCK Gears UP in a straight fight, the only chance Gears have is to use heavy anti-tank weaponry and smart tactics, just like infantry would. And air support? Attack helicopters are a Gear's worst nightmare (literally, there's an in-universe legend that some Gears' learning AI that survive a fire fight with an attack helicopter cause the Gear to quake with fear when the sensors pick up the sound of helicopter rotors).

>The Northco-Applefish A-22 Scorpion is probably the North’s number one attack helicopter, often referred to in the South as the “Gear’s Nightmare.” Pilot folklore says that Heavy Gears that survive fights with an A-22 will start to tremble and shake when they hear recordings of the helicopter’s characteristic low-key “whup-whup-whup.” Its only drawbacks are the high cost of fuel and the time-consuming maintenance involved with such an advanced and complex aircraft.

I like the Gundam School of lighting bruiser upscalled power armour we see from Zeta onwards. Eva style mechs with highly flexible limbs are also cool.
Many fun for storytelling and looks dramatic as all hell.
As long as it's got arms and a neck separating it's head from shoulders though, I'll give it a shot. Walkers and sunken heads just don't do it for me. Mechs that are supposed to look animalistic are an exception I guess. Mileage may vary.

Rifts itself states that the gliter boy is powered armor, the pilots legs slide into the legs and controls them, as does the pilots arms. Rifts actually gives and example of such a small scale Mecha in the NGR book and in that book implicitly states its more of a "robot vehicle" or Mecha as the pilot "Sits" in it and controls it.

Also the source picture's a bit off, here's one from the Rifts core.
