I'm sure it will be a fun little Hero Quest, but I don't really think there's a market for it in this age of coop vidya? Plus, those small game lines have never really been a profitable affair for GW? Necromunda, Mordheim et al.

I feel like that foes list isn't correct. There's at least 4 beastmen in the box too going by the pics

Boardgames are still pretty popular and its probably aimed more at drawing those folks into the hobby. Plus it'll hit the nostalgia button for a bunch of us.
They probably don't do to badly in proffits with limited run being an excuse to jack up the price.

To be fair, it's still only grabbing from pre-existing WHQ heroes.

Sigmarine is probably going to act like the Chaos Warrior or Bretonnian Knight
Dank Elf will likely be similar to the Wardancer
High Elf's just a wizard
Priest/Slayer are straight from WHQ

Honestly it's the deathrunner that has me curious. Is he a hero, or just a special minion.

From the fiery lands of Aqshy to the towers of Azyrheim, the legend of the Silver Tower and its mysterious master, the Gaunt Summoner, is told. It tells of a nightmarish realm, but also that the hero that triumphs over the king-sorcerer of that cursed place and his tests will see all his wishes fulfilled. Thus, champions gathered from the four winds will brave the nightmarish horrors of the Silver Tower, in order to win the [can't read, something like "spoils"] of the Gaunt Summoner.

In Warhammer Quest Silver Tower, you and up to three of your friends take the role of champions exploring the Silver Tower. Some search fortune and glory, others want to kill the Gaunt Summoner. Warhammer Quest Silver Tower is complete boxed game, with 13 double-sided board tiles, a 40-page manual, a 40-page adventure book, cards, tokens, dice, and 51 strikingly beautiful Citadel miniatures, representing the inhabitants of the Silver Tower, and the heros who venture therein.
[Text in red box is illegible, the title is "what haunts the Silver Tower?"]

GW stuff usually sticks pretty close to MSRP. The board games are pricy, but you do get a lot of plastic in them.
>>
>>47149103

You have no idea how roleplaying works.

You don't start with intricately designed heroes with grand backstories.

You start with blank slates and develop them over time.
>>
>>47149217

>>47149945

>>47148805
Tzaangors
The Tzaangors are ancient beastmen, devoted to Tzeentch, that the architect of change has remodelled more to his taste, replacing their snouts with a beak, and endowing their rough skin with shimmering feathers, ruffling their necks with tentacles, similar to those of the Horrors. Under they birdlike appearance and their armor of surprising quality for beastmen, the Tzaangors haunt the cursed halls of the Silver Tower to flush out the heroes and the weaker occupants of the Gaunt Summoner's realm, eager to satisfy their violent impulses. They close on their prey in a flood of beaks and blades.

... [disa/a]ppear in two

... the real assassin
[kind of hard to explain with a direct translation - it sounds like this guy can make a shadow clone of himself, and only when the enemy exposes himself by killing the clone will the real assassin appear and take advantage]

Kairic Acolytes
Corrupted in body and soul by their fanatic devotion to Tzeentch and the Gaunt Summoner, the Kairic Acolytes are the warrior-sorcerers invigorated by a killer zeal. They are all accomplished spellcasters, capable of blasting the intruders mad enough to risk themselves in the Silver Tower with magical discharges as well as slitting their throats. Their masters are the Kairic Adepts, (top left), the most capable among them, but despite their unfailing loyalty, they are, for the Gaunt Summoner, nothing more than sacrificial pawns in his intrigues.

As a native-level French speaker, living in a non-French-speaking country, who still prefers to consume English content in the origin language, the French in all of this is stilted AF. It's like they took the English text, passed it Google Translate with the "flowery words" checkbox on, then let a fourth-grader made sure it works on the most basic of language levels. Stuff like there are non-French idioms and expressions that are translated directly from English.

If this is the level of translation that GW has for the actual products (and not just in WD), my god they give 0 fucks.

>It's a semantics episode
People seem to confused by what "high" and "low" fantasy are, especially because they are such fucking worthless descriptors. There is no clear midpoint or hurdle to be crossed where low becomes high or visa versa, so using it especially in an attempt to qualify what is actually probably "mid" fantasy like warhammer or the witcher is a lost cause.

It is true that warhammer is grim and gritty and has a magic level actually lower than the witcher in most cases however, so I'm not sure if you're trying to argue that the witcher is massive thematic departure from warhammer because it honestly isn't.
>>
>>47162281

>pseudohistorical states and policy

It takes a lot more than that to be the same as either setting.

ASoIaF especially is all about politics and intrigue which was largely missing from Fantasy outside of a few mentions here or there in recent years.

Sure Fantasy had the potential to be like them, but GW would likely never take it in such a direction because it was all about your dudes and two armies fighting for reason.

Also it's really hard to to quantify Warhammer as either low or high fantasy since it could be either by dint of being a setting composed of everything and the kitchen sink.
>>

My interpretation of the difference between High and Low Fantasy always comes down to how commonly accepted/used magic or other things that defy the natural order/physics are. If the nearest town has a shop you can buy spell components and magic items in and nobody bats an eye, chances are you're high. If most normal people don't even realize magic exists, and will likely never have any interaction with it, you're low. Monsters and such don't factor in unless they're actually magical. They're just part of the ecology and wouldn't be treated as out of the ordinary, just rare.

Basically, Conan is Low Fantasy, D&D is High Fantasy.

I think it would be wise to have a scale with more granularity than a binary measurement of being "low" or "high"

Maybe a 1-5 scale

Tier 1 is everything is pretty much reasonable and mundane albeit in a fictional world. Magic and non hard sci fi elements are absent.Stuff like Mount and blade, The Road, that sort of thing

Tier 2 is still reasonable but with magic or !Notmagic on the edge of the setting in an esoteric and not readily apparent way. Things like Asoiaf, Thief, Conan.

Tier 3 is when magic or equivalent is known by all to exist and touches and colors the setting in it's entirety however the setting apart from this is still just people being people. People still farm crops in a mundane way and still go about their mundane business but they know over in the town is a mage tower and in the forest are some evil skeletons. Pretty much standard fantasy. Witcher, WHF, A good portion of DND worlds, LOTR, Black Company, TES, Vanilla World of warcraft, ect ect.

Tier 4 is even when the mundane is colored by the fantastic nature of the setting, where everywhere you turn something or someone is magical in nature, BUT the world still operates in a manner similar to our own at the end of the day albeit with magic. The trains and the farms might be magic but they are still trains and farms. People still die if swords hit them. This is where armor and other combat gear starts caring more about style than being functional. Whether this or tier 3 is the break point of being high fantasy is usually the source of these squabbles.Examples include Dark souls, Ebberon, most fantasy animes, Star wars, Post Vanilla World of warcraft and Warmachine.

Tier 5 is Rule of cool tier. No attempt and mundanity is attempted. Everything is fantasy at all times. Age of sigmar, Heavy metal, ODing on psychedelics, ect.
>>
>>47162898
This is the true definition..

But Wizards, dragons, zombies, corpse constructs, ghosts, skavens, fucking ents and demons are part of average joe everyday life in WHFB.
Tell me how this isn't high fantasy. The mere presence of an elf or skaven makes it high fantasy

>>
>>47162931
>monsters and such won't factor in

They're part of the ecology. Elves are just another race, like the Orcs are basically the scary mongol black people.

Besides, actual Wizards wizarding are pretty rare, at least in theory - We see the wizards and the magical items all the time because that's the part of the world that we, the viewers, are interested in and want to hear more about.

80% of the population can't cast spells and will never use a magical piece of gear, even if they're fighting against goblins and other monsters. Hell, Mordheim is all about having maybe 1 wizard in a band of a dozen adventurers, and that's a game that explicitly deals with adventurers and treasure seekers that don't give a shit about the bans on magic.
>>
>>47162931
>average joe everyday life in WHF
What. No. Wizards are viewed with suspicion and distrust by most people. Dragons are considered myth by many. The undead are something only encountered in a few specific places in the world or at specific points in it's history. Most people don't believe skaven exist. Ents are rare as fuck and are probably only believed in by brettonian peasants in a legendary sense. Daemons are near nonexistent outside of the realm of chaos save in the occasional incursions from that place, and knowledge of many of the aforementioned topics is controlled/violently suppressed.

For the average joe fantasy is just 16th century Europe and any encounter with magic they happen to have is likely going to be the only one they ever have or from a comfortable distance.
>>
>>47162958
It's not an argument about the topic you mong. It's a suggested solution to the fact that I see this retarded "is it low is it high" argument at least once a week.
>>
>>47162920

Warmachine I'd possibly argue is more 3 than 4. It's my understand that magic is mostly just used for fighting.
>>
>>47163010
You do know that Beastmen outnumber the humans in the Empire lands many time over, right? Beastmen being Chaos mutants.

You can't go off road too much in the Empire without being attacked by them.
>>
>>47163037
Beastmen aren't magic. They're just particularly ugly barbarians.

Elfs dwarves goblins ect are just weird looking people and are as about as significant as the redrawn geography to how "high" fantasy something is.

And mutants and beastmen besides are creatures half shrouded in myth to most citizens save those living in settlements deep in the woods.
>>
>>47163037
(picture related).

The "average joe fantasy" has a high chance of being raped, shat on, killed, and eaten (not necessarily in that order) by a mutant that has pure magical evil running through his blood.

>>
>>47163148
And most any human settlement clears or manages all woods in a good few mile radius just like in the real world?

The point remains, magic is not a thing most humans will encounter in their life time without it killing them. No one is going to walk into town and buy some magic potions from the town magic shop. No one is going to be buying spells of protection from their towns local mage.
>>
>>47163150
Other than Morgor Shadowgave or whatever his name is that's not typical. Most are just ugly goats with axes.
>>
>>47163175
>And most any human settlement clears or manages all woods in a good few mile radius just like in the real world?

Actually, they have to garrison every town and village in the empire or else risk a beastman attack. They are in a state of near-permanent siege. Going into the woods would just provoke the beastmen.
>>
>>47163010
Did you read the Von Carstein saga ? if yes you'll know ghost, zombies, corpse constructs and shit are pretty much very widespread in the empire.
>>
>>47163175
OK you are literally trolling now, please go take ANY WHFB books or armybook related to the empire (which are not even 5% of overall old world population and as such doesn't qualify for any representation of the setting being low or high fantasy)

>>
>>47155489

>>47163206
There is at least one mention that comes to mind of perfectly safe managed woodland in a warhammer novel being contrasted with the beastmen infested shithole of an insignificant town being attacked by beastmen while the citizens shit their pants because it's the only encounter any of them except the protagonists and a handful of rangers who had been encountering easement in the preceding month had ever had with chaos.
>>47163218
>certain points in history
Before and after carstein tried to take the empire the undead were back to being a minor and uncommon threat. The point being argued is
>is your average city dweller or peasant likely to a live a life in the warhammer world markedly different from that of a 16th century european with different proper nouns
and the answer is usually no
>>47163242
I literally don't even know what you're saying in the first sentence.

I'm going to guess what you were trying to say "please go take ANY WHFB books or armybook related to the empire [ and read them in because I think they disagree with your point]

I've already read quite a few. Other than the protagonists who the stories focus on the level of fantasy encountered by the characters is usually minimal. A Chaos cultist who's only encounters with anything magic were knowing the name of slannesh, and having his rune appear on his chest because he'd been huffing warpstone. Some innkeepers who just sort of generally know that some chaos altar exists in the woods somewhere maybe. Thats the level of intimacy post people in the setting have with magic.
>>
>>47150051
Yes, thank you for clarification. This comment was done in response to someone claiming the new heroes were bland compared to the old ones, so thank you for clarifying the old ones were bland as hell.

I think slave was arguing the fact that your whole argumentation is "b-but the empire civilian don't encounter magic" yet Empire isn't even 5% of teh whole Warhammerworld. And literraly the other 95% if full of everest mount sized shaggot, elfs, krakens, undeads legions, dwarf with runic weapons and armors everywhere etc.

The skaven alone outnumber humans 30:1, Adn then there is the undead etc.

it's like saying Starwars is not scify since I know an indigenous human group hunting with bows and arrows totally normal animals, never in contact with anything but standard wildlife, when the setting revolves around "100 quadrillions beings".

So I just noticed:

1) GW made a new sub division for specialist games
2) Said sub division tosses out that Assassin board game, Space Hulk, the Imperial Knight thingy and the Genestealer cult stuff
3) Now said sub division tries their hand at a fantasy game

Does that mean, if we buy this thing and show them that people indeed want revamps of their old Fantasy specialist stuff, they might give us an official Mordheim: Age of Sigmar?
>>
>>47163654
Remember that you can use all of your missiles weapons even in close combat. so this should answer your question.
>>
>>47163874

As far as I'm aware the Specialist Games division had no hand in the Assassin game, Deathwatch, or even this game. The only confirmed ones are Betrayal at Calth and Bloodbowl.

The Imperial Knight game is based on a minigame that was included in an issue of WD around the time the Tau Stormsurge was released.

Suppose it's possibly the Specialist Design Studio (Which is part of the FW Design Studio and not the GW one) could work on something akin to Mordheim, but from recent reports they're working on reinvention of Epic and if Bloodbowl does well will probably set to work on creating more teams for it.

They do seem to be going off of sales though, if the new iteration of Bloodbowl doesn't sell well enough they weren't going to bother with it anymore from the sound of things. Will probably find out more next weekend since the Design Team is supposed to be at Warhammer Fest.
>>
>>47163877
That one additional shot every two melee phases is not worth giving up +1 to wound and rend.
Now, if you can keep the guy well protected behind some screening troops and have him blast away at things that proc Sigmar's Judgement it'd be another matter.
>>
>>47163877
Not really. One load-out gives him two shots and three strikes. The other gives him one shot and three strikes, though these strikes have better rend. You're exchanging a shot for better armor piercing in melee.

However, Witch Hunters are better against Wizards and Daemons.
This means that their main targets are Chaos Daemons, Seraphon and Wizards.
Squishy Wizards have a 5+ save so you don't really need extra Rend for them, Seraphon ignore -1 Rend so it's better to use the two shots against them and Chaos Daemons by and large have bad saves also.

So yeah, the two-shot variant is probably better after all.

For what it's worth, they still sell the End Times books. If they can release a 30k game, I'm sure they can also release a game set in pre-AoS times. It would be a great excuse to use some of the model designs that never made it to production.

I can speak french marginally.

Sounds like he's equally good in combat as magic as it says" he charges into the fray head lowered like a insane berzerker before unleashing gouts of tzeentchs multicoloured supernatural fire" or something to that effect.

He directs the cultists and directs rituals equally well as he performs in combat.

The snots are deminutive slaves "remodeled by their existence in the corners of the silver tower. They live in the palatial(?) labyrinthe of the grand summoner and use poinsons and nets to help him catch impudent foes." the rest is a bit lost on me cause my vocad is shit. Knight-Questor
Each Stormcast Eternal was, during his mortal life, a valiant hero, before being transformed into an instrument of the will of Sigmar, clad in shining Sigmarite and gifted the power of the skies. The Knight-Questors are distinguished from these champions by the legendary nature of their exploits, and it falls to them to fulfill the most dangerous quests that can be found in the mortal realms. The God-king personally entrusts them with the task of taking down the most terrible enemies or recover the most powerful artifacts, and it is such a mission that brings the Knight-Questor to the dungeons of the Silver Tower.

>>47164349
Fyreslayer Doomseeker
Renouncing their brotherly [familial?] ties and their natural homestead, the Doomseekers take an unbreakable oath that drives them to a solitary life. A Fyreslayer does not reveal the reasons of oath-taking: perhaps it is an initiation rite, or the destiny of a Runeson that will not inherit his father. Some of them are survivors of a disappeared homestead, fulfilling the last wishes of their deceased brothers. Some return to their homesteads as heores once their quest is complete, others roam the Mortal Realms until their death. Only the Doomseeker knows what terrible oath has driven him to defy the dangers of the Silver Tower.

Tenebrael Shard
While often spoken of in shaded corners, almost nothing is known of the Tenebrael Shard, some even considering it a myth. It is said he can walk between the shadows like a man walks from one room to another, further that he can turn into a cloud of living darkness, playing like smoke between enemy weapons. Can he really break a sword's blade with his bare hands? Can he stop a heart with one glacial stare? None know, save the Tenebrael Shard. Like all regarding this unequalled killer, one can only speculate as to the reasons that have driven him to the Silver Tower.

The Darkoath Chieftain has vanquished a myriad of rivals, monsterous beasts of the Mortal Realms and heroes of Order. Currently, he wishes to test himself at the demented maze of the Silver Tower, and is ready to risk his life and soul to tear his reward from the maleficent master of this place.

A riddle wrapped in a mystery covered by an illusion, such is the Mistweaver Saih, of none know anything. Some claim she comes from Ulgu of the haunted shadows, without presenting any proof. Who does she serve? Who are her allies? Who are her enemies? What brings her to the Silver Tower? The only certainty of those that fight alongside the Mistweaver Saih is that this enigmatic aelf is an enchanter of the highest order, magical lightening disappearing any who provoke her ire. She confounds and blinds her enemies by way of illusions displaying their hidden desires, sowing paranoia and discord, pushing her adversaries to tear themselves apart, finally turning on their own selves, while she floats peacefully on a cloud of mystical haze.

Excelsior Warpriest
A simple mortal, bringing the light of Sigmar to the darkest of places, the Excelsior Warpriest has the courage of a true hero. Both powerful warrior and ardent orator, the Excelsior Warpriest spreads the word of the God-king across the Mortal Realms, applying his flaming sermons with his scared war hammer. His light of Sigmar allows him to heal his allies or incinerate the vile manifestations of Chaos, and he can trust the presence of his Gryph-hound, a loyal and ferocious companion, who can as a final resort give its life to save that of its master. If the Warpriest has traversed the Mortal Realms to reach the Silver Tower, it is for a simple reason: far from searching the favor of the Gaunt Summoner, he has come to kill him in the name of Sigmar.

[Uncountable champions]
These six heroes are the architypes of their kind, come from all the Mortal Realms to defy the Gaunt Summoner and his infernal dwelling. But, they are far from being the only ones to brave the Silver tower. Go [to] page 30 to know more on how to include more heroes in your adventures of Warhammer Quest Silver Tower!

Gaunt Summoner
The terrible master of the Silver Tower is a king damon with phenomenal occult powers. The Gaunt Summoner is akin to a god in his infernal realm, because he can remodel the impossible topographyof the Silver Tower at the will of his various whims, invoking or transporting monsters and heros from different realms to make them confront eachother in cruel and unecessary games. However, despite his perversity, the Gaunt Summoner is quite a fair player, even if it is in his way, and following his skewed principals. If a hero succeeds in surmounting the challenges
of the Gaunt Summoner, the latter will grant one of their wishes, and there are very few things indeed that the sinister lord-sorcerer cannot make real. But rare are the adventurers that succeed in this, and most are trapped forever by the topology of the Silver Tower, serving as toys to its tennant.

Familiars
Incarnations of pure magic, the Familiars have no other master than the Silver Tower itself, and are as much nuisances as they are helpful. The imperious Tweak (1) fills the ears with its grandiose plans, for it thinks itself a Lord of Change. The kleptomanic Pug (2) is always looking to nick all that is shiny. As for Blot (3), it may contain all of the secrets of creation, but it is indecipherable. And Slop (4) the nauseating is a fish-thing, that can be smelt coming from far away.
D'awww thems so cute!

Ogroid Thaumaturge
Save for its versatile master, no being in the Silver Tower is more feared than the Ogroid Thaumaturge, a monster torn directly from a primordial nightmare. He leads the cultists and the savage beastmen of the Silver Tower, in their rituals as well as in combat, throwing the Gaunt Summoner's mortal minions in endless battles, shaking the dungeons of the Silver Tower - all for the frivolous amusement of their demonic master. Ill-fated is the adventurer that encounters this monstrous magician while turning a corridor, as he charges, head lowered like an engraged beast, his hooves and fists grinding any hero too slow to evade, and engulfing all others in the supernatural multicolored flames of Tzeentch.

Grot Scuttlings
The Grot Scuttlings are the degenerate cousins of the tribal grots, whose bodies have been warped to adapt to existence within the Silver Tower's recesses. They live in the palace-like labyrinth of the Gaunt Summoner, capturing intruders with the help of poisons and nets, and flee back to their holes as soon as the outcome of combat seems unfavorable, without ever trying to take on the (dangerous and uneatable) habitants of the Silver Tower. Given the advantage of numbers, the Grot Scuttlings could put in peril the adventurers that fall into their grasp.

Pink Horrors
Living magical manifestations, the Pink Horrors are the minor daemons of Tzeentch, cackling, hooting and clucking the joy of existence while frolicking here and there in the Silver Tower. Joyous and jovial to the extreme, the Pink Horrors scream trills and gargle with pleasure when pure magic springs from their outstretched arms, and explode in laughter when the adventurers find themselves taken in a tickling twister of multicolored flames. If an adventurer succeeds in killing one of these exuberant demon-sorcerers, it does not faint like its demonic kin do. Instead, in dying, the Pink Horror splits in two, giving birth to a pair of Blue Horrors

Blue Horrors Nice segue bro
Unlike their joyful pink ascendants, the Blue Horrors are demons full of arrogance and spite, grouchy and whiny, wishing their twin to never be a Pink Horror. While still smaller and pettier than their pink analogues, the Blue Horrors are still creatures made of magic, in the image of Tzeentch; they are spell casters able to burn adventurers with their warp-flames, grumbling the entire time. If a Blue Horror perishes, instead of dissipating, it, in turn, splits in two bringing forth the Brimstone Horrors

Brimstone Horrors Nice segue bro
Only slightly less rudimentary than the raw magic that fills the Silver Tower, the Brimstone Horrors are bundles [sheaves] of Warp-fire and meanness animated by a simulacrum of consciousness. Even more hateful than their blue parents, they throw themselves at the adventurers in pairs, biting with their sharp little fangs and hacking with their claws of enchanted flame. Luckily, they are ephemeral, susceptible as much to being exhausted into nothingness after casting a demanding spell as to disappearing under the vengeful strikes of their adversaries.

[Exotic Enemies]
None know how many inhabitants live in the Silver Tower, nor what types exactly, since the Gaunt Summoner has torn innumerable creatures and monsters from the Mortal Realms and the Realm of Chaos to populate his domain. If a scholar tried to catalogue all these beings, they would end by filling encycolpedias, perhaps entire libraries, before [succumbing to the diversity? - not sure, too JPGy].
It is entirely possible that event the Gaunt Summoner is unaware of the number of residents in his Silver Tower, ever changing, and if he were ever to take interest, he would discover all sorts of occupants, deranged and [?], living inside the depths of the edifice, battling constantly in the darkness of forgotten dungeons, with no motive other than providing a moment's instant of amusement to the dark lord of this place, as terrible as it is insane.
The monstrous antagonists contained in the Warhammer Quest Silver Tower box are only some of the rough adversaries for a part of valiant adventurers, but the games also proposes rules to add various other demonic servants of Tzeentch, from Screamers and Flamers to powerful Heralds of Tzeentch. As such, if you already posses a collection of demons of Tzeentch, or if you want to increase the difficulty of the challenge after several playthroughs, you could bolster the lines of the Gaunt Summoner's ranks with reinforcements. But be warned, o brave adventurers - these demonic adversaries will truly put you to the test, the exotic enemies are only for the most tried and true heroes.

Not all residents of the Silver tower are found there by the will of its infernal tennant. It's by the command of its mysterious sponsors that the Skaven Deathrunner has come to the Silver Tower, to accomplish an assassination, without it being known who is the target of
this exceptional killer. Except the blade and the
poison, the Deathrunner uses shadow magic to appear in two locations at once. Its illusory twin seeming as real as the Deathrunner itself, but it faints as soon as one blade touches it, exposing the attacker to a counter-attach by the real assassin.

Shame that the boardgame is set in Ache of Sigmar and the heroes are modeled after that fashion. Otherwise I would consider it if it was Old World school .
>>
>>47166119
I don't think that's the case. I think it's more of an "expansion hook", or at the most a translation table allowing you to take an AoS statline for a model and use it in this game.

I would *LOVE* having a complete open-ended expansion mechanism (not homebrew, literally a way to use AoS-statted models in the game) - imagine doing a session of evil "heroes" raiding the fortress of goodly type "monsters"!

I would say parts were high and parts were low, but overall a high setting. It's similar with 40K, where you have goofy factions like Orks and very serious factions like the Dark Angels and such in different corners. In that way you have angles fitting for everyone's tastes. That said I miss having door kicking witch hunters an 30 years war soldiers facing off against dinosaurs. Now if is all wacky ultra high fantasy.
