Jesus Christ. Do they know they're possibly minutes away from paralysis and asphyxiation?
>>
Nah. Instead, lets talk about whether Knowledge skills are good for the game.

I think they are not. For one, it is a fun-killer for the player. He recognizes the hints the DM put as to what the monster is, AND... fails the Knowledge roll, and must now continue playing the encounter pretending he doesn't know what it is. It isn't much better if he succeeds, either: now the DM has to stop the flow of the game to read the description to the players.

It is better to not have Knowledge skills and instead let the DM reveal or not reveal information, based on whether he wants it to be a mystery or not.
>>
>>47136533
I would tend to agree, then again I think people should have a reasonable level of trivia and general knowledge so I would expect someone to be able to pitch tents without needing to roll Survival.

You're presupposing a game like DnD in which everyone and their mother has actually read the Monster Manual. Knowledge skills like History and Religion don't stop being useful for the wide gamut of games and settings just because everyone knows what happened and who the gods are in the Forgotten Realms, and Knowledge skills about wildlife and other monsters don't stop being useful just because everyone knows what beholder is. Not every game with knowledge skills is DnD, and even among DnD games, not every campaign is instantly recognizable.

Even if a creature isn't instantly recognizable, it is better to build up the narrative to a new monster rather than breaking the flow with a roll and a description. No matter if the players know it or not, the Knowledge skills are the worst way to handle knowledge. If the players need to know, the DM could drop hints or narration where appropriate, in advance. Likewise for religions, every DM has a setting document for that.

>>47136694
That is genuinely pretty clever
>>
>>47136771
Okay, a couple of things. For one, the results of a knowledge roll should not interrupt the flow, they should be tailored to it. You don't roll knowledge and then describe the creature when it's standing in front of the players because you've already described it when they first caught sight of it. Knowledge rolls are for the things that are of pressing utility-- the hidden weaknesses or behavioural quirks that will make a confrontation easier, but without which it is not impossible.

What the player needs to know, the player absolutely should be told. That's not what knowledge skills are for. They're for giving the player information they don't NEED to know, but which would help them. Knowledge is like Spot, when you want the player to be aware of something, you tell them about it. When you don't want them to know, but they would want to know, you let them roll.

If the party is tracking an unknown creature, you let them (let, not make- you don't force anyone into a knowledge check they don't ask for) roll knowledge based on its tracks to identify it before they run into it, letting them tailor their approach armed with foreknowledge. If they don't know beforehand, they'll certainly find out when they run into it, but there is an edge that they can seize if they try.

For a more tightly narrative-driven game, knowledge skills may not be the best fit, but there are plenty of systems that don't use them. I'm not saying that knowledge skills are the be-all and end-all, I'm saying that implementing them is not automatically a mistake.

Deaths due to simple ignorance are explicitly excluded from receiving a Darwin Award. Animal handling accidents by themselves are quite common, and very common incidents, even if dumb, aren't eligible either.

It'd be more Darwinesque if they clearly knew the octopus was incredibly venomous and handled it anyway for some stupid reason. If the photo was holding the octopus next to a Danger - Octopi Are Venomous sign, that'd be a Darwin Award.

Section 3: Hazards Identification
Potential Acute Health Effects:
Very hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of eye contact (irritant), of ingestion, of inhalation. Hazardous in case of
skin contact (corrosive, permeator). Liquid or spray mist may produce tissue damage particularly on mucous membranes of
eyes, mouth and respiratory tract. Skin contact may produce burns. Inhalation of the spray mist may produce severe irritation
of respiratory tract, characterized by coughing, choking, or shortness of breath. Severe over-exposure can result in death.
Inflammation of the eye is characterized by redness, watering, and itching. Skin inflammation is characterized by itching,
scaling, reddening, or, occasionally, blistering.

Potential Chronic Health Effects:
Hazardous in case of skin contact (permeator). CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: Classified A5 (Not suspected for human.) by
ACGIH. 3 (Not classifiable for human.) by IARC. MUTAGENIC EFFECTS: Not available. TERATOGENIC EFFECTS: Not
available. DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Not available. The substance may be toxic to blood, kidneys, liver, brain, peripheral
nervous system, central nervous system (CNS). Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target
organs damage. Repeated or prolonged contact with spray mist may produce chronic eye irritation and severe skin irritation. Repeated or prolonged exposure to spray mist may produce respiratory tract irritation leading to frequent attacks of bronchial
infection. Repeated exposure to a highly toxic material may produce general deterioration of health by an accumulation in one
or many human organs.

Shit nigger. Mercury is famous for being absorbed through the skin.

My mother described being given Mercury to play with as a child, cupping it in her hands and *poof* it's gone.

Certainly inhalation can be trouble but Mercury in any form can be absorbed shockingly readily by the human body.

It was used as a cure for syphyilis, except over exposure could lead to madness and death, too little wouldn't cure the disease.

That would be octopus'. A possessive of the noun "octopus" as the garden belongs to the octopus.

definitely mormons, which makes the clip less funny to me. Mormons aren't nearly as annoying about that shit. JWs have to fill a quota of houses visited on a monthly basis I beleive to keep being a JW. Sucks living a few blocks from a congregation meeting house.

The standard plural in English of octopus is octopuses. However, the word octopus comes from Greek and the Greek plural form octopodes is still occasionally used. The plural form octopi, formed according to rules for some Latin plurals, is incorrect.

Octopi is incorrect by Latin rules, but it's commonly accepted in English, as are many types of hypercorrect errors.

oh god, not this argument again

the logical plural would actually octopods, considering the usage in other English words with the pos/pod suffix, like tripods and arthropods. But given that Octopuses is in common usage already it's a rather moot point. Octopodes (pronounced with four syllables; not 'poads',) would be technically correct given the Greek origin of the word, but it's somewhat pedantic and sounds completely unnatural in English. And Octopi is just plain wrong.

Octopuses and octopi are both correct and acceptable in English.

Arguing about what the plural is in Latin or Greek is missing the point.

Holy shit, I found it. From 11 years ago.

>The massive amount of scarring on her body resembled veins stretching in a solid wave from her collarbone down to her knees and down to her wrists.

>Ranma's fingertips idly traced the white scars running along her spine, pressing him experimentally to feel the hard nub at the centre of the raised, puckered section of flesh.

>She felt sure that he was the only man in the world who would ever discover the erogenous aspects of her scarring. She knew that others thought the raised lines repulsive but he kissed her all over, never caring if it was scar or smooth skin, nibbling her nipples and the lattice of scars all over her breasts.

My young 13 year old self was not prepared for this. I've never been the same since. Pic related.

Firefly (the show) is very wild west Sci fi. In a sense, you for describe the main characters as being like the Dukes of Hazzard mixed with Han Solo.
