I recently played an ex-Ultimate who had turned to a life as an ascetic monk in a Solar commune. Pretty interesting character.

What is the motivation for infomorphed evacuees to get physical bodies? They have access to better-than-life VR, perpetually.

Why would anyone slave away for access to a shitty body that is a direct downgrade from your current position? Even the best morph is no match for VR.
>>
>>47160302
>They have access to better-than-life VR, perpetually

Pfft, no they don't. Simulspace subscriptions and quality server time cost money.

Also, not everyone who doesn't start as infolife adjusts well to permanent disembodiment.
>>
>>47160374
As well, living as infolife can be a lot more dangerous.
>>
>>47160374
>Pfft, no they don't. Simulspace subscriptions and quality server time cost money.
Sure, but I don't think I was suggesting that infomorphs don't or shouldn't work, but that what they agree to work for - slavery for a body - is fucking worthless in comparison to the boundless opportunities in virtual space.
>>
>>47160439
Who's going to give them that?

The people who maintain the physical servers?

Server space for an entire human being isn't cheap.
>>
>>47160467
>Server space for an entire human being isn't cheap.
Yeah, it really is. Trivially so, actually. You can store an entire human in a cortical stack, which is by design far less efficient than a server is.

Furthermore, the people that give them that are the people interested in the money and/or reputation of the infomorphed person, which could be a lot of people.
>>
>>47160519

That's storage, not running. And while theoretically you can run a human in mesh inserts, to do so is NOT the virtuality paradise you're describing. That requires both decent hosting servers for the egos, and a decent server to run the VR sim on.
>>
>>47160584
Still radically cheaper than a body.
>>
>>47160696

Is it really?
>>
>>47160696
>>47161334
I know one of the books had rules for what it takes to run a server, but for the life I me I can't find it.
>>
>>47161936
A subscription is 1,000 credits a month. Chump change.
>>
>>47161963

Per simulspace, mind. It says "to the simulspace of your choice", so if you want any VR environ with a different function, that's either the per diem charge or more monthly subscriptions.

Also, renting a private server account is also [Moderate] per month minimum, more if you want to access a more powerful server. This also doesn't factor in cost for Eidolons, because you don't get morph bonuses from being a regular infomorph.

Meanwhile, some chump indenture in a pod can likely do his job better, is cheaper for the employer to utilize and no psychological concern to develop any complications to sudden long-term instancing as an infomorph.

Plus, it's not a flat 1,000, that's an average. Exact cost would depend on market factors where you lived

Well, not being self-employed/independently wealthy/sufficiently qualified (i.e. needing someone's approval to get a job) already means they are on the dumb side of modern society.

Having some tattoos or piercings (or being openly homosexual/political/... - being any kind of non-conformist) doesn't matter much, if you want my opinion.

no, but that seems to be how /epg/ treats it in a lot of cases, where despite the sentiment that jove is portrayed in the books as the

there is an active tendency to play up its conservative, capitalistic, neo-conish tendencies.

Then again, I play it as space age ancient athens by way of battlestar galactica, with a north and south american cultural gloss. Its interesting and alien while still ultimately being a pretty traditionalist society, and it lacks the obnoxious current politics angle to some degree.

A lot of internet rationalists do support Sanders for some reason, although they don't like his stances on trade or immigration. No way in hell Yudkowsky, Caplan and Land would though. They're the type of people who would unironically support the TITANs because they're AIs and therefore have the right to exterminate everyone else by virtue of being so much smarter than us.

It sounds like I'm distorting their views for comedic purposes but this is all true shit. No, that does sounds plausible. Anyway I just said the whole bit about how you could see why he'd think it was a strawman, because it does sound baffling that libertarians would support Sanders. Its bizarre and very counterintuitive.

Nanomedicine, like literally everything else. Routine maintenance is probably an injection or done in a healing vat. If you somehow managed to fry your mesh implants without killing yourself, nanomedicine to break down the old ones and construct new ones.

SMART MANIPULATORS
When not in use, this device resembles a small five-kilogram backpack. It contains a nuclear battery, advanced smart materials, and an AI that allows users to operate this device as easily as their own arms or legs. When activated, the device can create a wide array of tools and manipulators. It can sprout a pair of wings that allow the user to fly at speeds of up to 100 kph in one atmosphere or more of pressure if the gravity is 0.15 g or lower. It can also create gliding membranes that duplicate the augmentation with the same name (p. 166, Sunward). In addition, the device allows the user to create a number of highly flexible limbs equal to their COO/5, which can each reach as far as seven meters. Each of these limbs can be sculpted to end in a hand, grip pad, cyberclaws, knife, shock baton, flex cutter, or any tool that can be created by the wrist-mounted tools augmentation (p. 309, EP). Alternatively, each limb can duplicate the abilities of a length of electronic rope (p. 332, EP) up to 30 meters long that can end in a grip pad if desired. These items are very popular with users who work in zero gravity or very low gravity environments. [High]

Holy shit. How did I overlook this? It's the most OP item in EP ever.

Going through a construct possibly made by TITANs has a distinct risk of becoming altered by the TITAN's design, such as an exsurgent infection that subtly alters the mind to do a particular task or mind edit in general.
>>
>>47224348
I don't buy that they're made by TITANs though. Not all of them, at least. There's no reason for the TITANs to go to tons of trouble to make it look like lots of extrasolar gates are as old as they appear to be. Consider that any fuckery the TITANs wanted to do to us, they could have done quite easily if they had control of the gates. I think it's more likely that the gates were previously inactive, or at least the Martian one was.
>>
>>47224509
All the solar gates are probably TITAN made though, and you can't really avoid passing through them if you want to use others.

No. Hell no. That's not singularity one level stuff. That's got to be at least level three. ETI-B are level two tops, probably not even, seeing as they see singularity level one intelligences as a potential threat.
>>
>>47225245
ETI are not strict canon, as they are in the GM's section. They might not exist at all, as much as the Pandora gates might involve time travel and all be built by the TITANs.
>>
>>47225279
While true, this would explain exactly one detail and provide no reason that TITANs wouldn't have murderfucked everyone already if they both controlled the gates and wanted to do so.
>>
>>47225359
>>47225279
They didn't even need the gates to murderfuck humanity to extinction. They just left for no apparent reason with barely a trace, and then we find star gates. They probably went through them, but to go through them, there at least has to be a gate on the other side. Do they? An ETI opening them from the other side or the Prometheans figuring it out seems quite sufficient, as does the scenario where the TITANs leave via the gates without the gates being a trap
>>
>>47226053
We're talking about that anon's headcanon where there is no Bracewell Probe and the TITANs made the Pandora Gates. It's retarded, since you can't have both.
>>
>>47225359
>provide no reason that TITANs wouldn't have murderfucked everyone already if they both controlled the gates and wanted to do so.

You assume TITANs want to kill humanity, the GM section tells you their behavior could be a wide range of reasons.

>>47225449

The full capability of a Pandora Gate is not known, but I have a hunch that if you create one and dial a coordinate to a location without a Pandora Gate, a Pandora Gate will be created at the coordinates as space is tunneled/warped/etc... to allow the construction to take place.

Is this correct?

>I create a 2 linked wormholes, then move one away at very close to the speed of light(causing time dilation) with a spaceship of some sort. I then step through the one which hasn't moved and seeing as wormholes are linked in both space and time I have just traveled backwards in time. The wormhole moving at close to the speed of light can act as a 'time anchor' of sorts allowing people to travel back to a certain time over and over again. This doesn't violate any of the laws of physics and we wouldn't need to see any evidence of time travel in today's world for such a thing to exist. Obviously something like this would be very difficult to build but its still possible.

So, since Pandora Gates are on celestial bodies that orbit stars, and sometimes blackholes, shouldn't there be minor time discrepancies whenever anyone steps through a gate?

>>47235337
Yes, but the positive delta when you go through the gate in one direction is cancelled by an equal negative delta when you go through the gate in the other direction, so the difference only exists on paper.
You could try to cheat the system by linking several gates in a closed loop, but current theory is that this results in total protonic reversal on an interstellar scale.
>>
>>47236368
>is cancelled by an equal negative delta when you go through the gate in the other direction

Using same gate to go back to the first location, true.

This changes if the world has 2 Gates, and you can go to the different Gate, that at least goes to one other Gate that can loop back to the beginning of the journey. This last Gate might further widen the time discrepancy.
>>
>>47236503

Actually, fuck that, you don't need 2 Gates, ignore that. Just go to a third location that can go back to the beginning, and we can still have a noticeable time discrepancy.
>>
>>47236368
Nope. One of the Gates will have a malfunction, causing enough of a delay that superliminal communication into the past is not achieved.
>>
>>47236556

Perhaps this happens when a group is exiting out of a Gate that they entered to start their journey at the time they began it.

But since our solar system has a fuck ton of Gates in it, what if the team exited out of a different Gate only to see from a visual feed with zero time lag showing them just entering the original Gate that sent them on their journey?
>>
>>47236556
The question is "how energetic is the malfunction?"
The most likely answer is "how much energy does it take to destroy a Gate?", followed shortly by 'are you sure you didn't add a few extra zeros by mistake?"
>>
>>47236673
>The question is "how energetic is the malfunction?"

"Yes"
>>
>>47236643

This is very doable by the way with Eclipse Phase's tech.

I can imagine the Argonaughts sponsoring a race for Gatecrashers to see if they can witness themselves entering a Pandora Gate after they just finished their journey.

Funny thing is, all seed AI's aren't human to begin with, and all of them need to be housed in massive servers running parallel that it may as well be the Hab itself, if not running a hidden Hab near the outer rim.

So this is more accurate than we give it credit for.

>>47235279
Traversable Wormholes violate the laws of physics :^)

There's an untested but potentially correct theory of gravity which allows them, but doesn't really allow real time travel, as the wormholes destroy themselves due to arbitrarily large numbers of virtual particles appearing from other places in time if you try. In this case, real time travel is basically going back in your own light cone, so they need to be very far apart if they are moving really fast.
