Backstory doesn;t take alot of explaining, gives a good reason my character knows how to fight, and having just won their freedom (or escaped) they have plenty of reason to use the only skill they have (killing things) to make some kind of living that won't have them right back in the arena as a slave again.

Any sort of Spellsword.

Hooker with a heart of gold. I love having a deep character that I can develop narratively

I play a lot of smaller, weaker healer characters who just want to make the world a better place for their friends. Debateably reverse traps. Medics work too.

I almost always try to make a character that synergizes with the story of another pc. Having an extra dynamic with another player always seems to add some cool depth

I generally try and play a Gnoll ranger/fighter(if I can get away with playing a savage character in the party).

Some little runty bastard who got run out of his tribe and is trying to make it as a sellsword or something.

If they don't fit, I try and make a Heavy Weapons Guy type character. Big weapons mean big fun.

Depends on my mood.
Either

I'll either go for "big dude who wields big weapon" because that's easy, or "sneaky dude who shanks people" because that's also easy but moderately more interesting to play.

That said, I've thought of so many characters I would love to play in RPGs that I'm never lacking for a concept. And since I end up running games most of the time, they just sorta build for awhile meaning I've got lots of options to choose from.

I have three

Wandering sage. Almost always a magic user/ranger hybrid. Seeks knowledge and relics. Typically light hearted and helpful. Neutral good.

Second is a claymore wielding fighter. Plate armor and high HP, basically a tank. True neutral or Lawful neutral. Personality is honest, hardworking, and loyal. Can be bloodthirsty in battle and usually is very prideful and reckless.

The last is a female witch. Magic focused but sometimes has a light and quick weapon. This archtype is usually looking for a lost lover/friend/artifact/etc. They are manipulative but not evil.

Perfect reason to adventure, a simple and enjoyable class to play and plenty of rp chances as my character first learns about life outside his village.

I once had a friend who said it was impossible for me to play a dumb character. So as a break from form, I'm now playing an Int 24 hive ganger.

Lately, my fall-back has always been some ex-military dude eking out a quiet life. Has hobbies you don't normally expect.

For example, in D&D 5E, my tiefling fighter's taken up social work.

Ork Barbarian; two handed weapons, archery, charisma and armour skills. Nothing else.

Ranging from incredibly helpful and friendly Lawful Good to high-energy chaotic good, generally pretty naive, always willing to fight for what's right.

Ranged Ranger.
He's talkative. He has seen shit and loves to tell stories about it. He's fairly optimistic and in love with life. One day he would like to settle in some nice, comfy house in a countryside.

A human veteran sellsword, who has been in many tight situations, but always managed to save his own ass. He is kind of neutral good, as he is loyal first to general good of the common people, and then money. He knows his way with weapons, but usually tries to solve problems primarily by speaking. Hugely dislikes being at a disadvantage, so he is not afraid to fight dirty and likes to plan ahead in case of fights (which he tries to avoid as much as possible).

Usually is the tactician. Likes to wear light armour for mobility, and always carries a sword with him.

An investigator, if I'm feeling silly: An over-analyzing investigator.

Ranger, usually a travelling merchant or with some other occupational circumstances that result in being in the wilderness enough to develop some survival skills and with a reason to be travelling in the same direction as the rest of the party long enough to develop friendships.
