In a casual competitive game: "Wow you sure showed me how much better you are."

In a cooperative game (D&D etc): "Why do you hate the idea of playing this game?"

In a tournament competitive game: Anyone caught should be banned from the game.

mrw in an RPG with friends there is that one guy that rolls the dice and then makes up what it say and never ever fails a roll. Why, man, why do you do this?

In anything competitive, don't cheat. Lose with dignity, get better, then come back or get the fuck out.
>>
>>46800771
I actually think it's okay to cheat, if cheating is common parlance. No need to limit yourself to lose if no one else gives a damn about the rules.

I have been around those that cheat in rpgs and card games. These people usually have enough other issues to push them out of the group.
>>
If anyone is enough of a sadsack to cheat in a cooperative game of make-believe I'm kind of inclined to let them have it so long as it doesn't impact anyone else's enjoyment (ie. they're unaware) and they aren't being particularly egregious.
>>
>>46800771

Cheating is a one strike offense with me. If I find out someone I play with cheats, I don't play with them again.

They should be ejected from the group/game/tournament immediately, until they learn not to be a cheating shitbird.

>cheaters

You forgot to add the qualifier "for unilateral advantage."

It's not 'cheating' if everyone can follow the example - it's just an optional mechanic for sneaky gits.

That said, before the platitude was modernised, the source of all evil was not called "money" but a term meaning "the temptation to hold advantage over others." tl;dr:

Cheating for unfair advantage is evil.

Human garbage. In cooperative games it makes things too easy and cheapens victory, and in competitive it makes you a Yu-Gi-Oh! character. Either way you're That Guy.

Cheating is typically accompanied by other "that guy" qualities

Story time

>be running apocalypse world Dark souls homebrew hak
>Predragonwars not long after dark soul was taken by Manus
>Players are allowed to pick any race they can imagine (plot reasons)
>Half Dragon thief style character raised by Vikings but is a coward
>humanoid turtle who is a wise sage/druid/pothead
>ChimaraDemiGod of the blood moon who is at odds with his father who is a god of another universe
>Magical fey pixie who worships a giant dildo flying in the sky he I tell him to elaborate about his character like so he shoe horns in that he lives in the Turtle's ass
>Turtle sage says he can live in Shell not ass they agree to disagree I rule Shell no domestic ass living if sage isn't cool with it
>game goes smooth for the joke characters the party make
>they meet Lord Gwen who explains they where pulled from an alternate universe to aid him (kill dragons for good)
>they talk to him like he is a peon and even threaten him
>expected.jpg
>shit happens and they are attacked in the courtyard for stealing and Fucking up a door
>Pixie is rolling and picking up dice before I can see no problem except he never goes lower than a 10 (2d6+ system)
>politely ask him to not pick up the dice after he rolls he agrees but is overly defensive that I'm implying him cheating
>after game friend confirms that he was indeed cheating and has a history of this along with other issues
>>
What do you guys think about unintentional cheating, as in misunderstanding a rule about something and doing it anyways. I've felt scummy doing it in the past even when it's by accident and then realizing later I was wrong or shouldn't have done somethimg.
>>
>>46807992

Continued

>few games later they have some levels under there belt and magic items in there pocket
>The half god was someone I thought would be a problem about optimization but I was dead wrong
>Pixie has moved all rolls to 2 attributes and raised them to current cap but can't explain exactly where his bonuses are coming from without a lot of back and forth and misdirection
>This occurs multiple times ending with him apologizing and erasing only to claim he remembers it came from _____ (nope)
>Also was told he was marking exp down when he shouldn't have

Apocalypse World has a unique exp system that requires a lot of trust as players mark exp when circumstances are met.

In the course of this game he threatened to kill the party countless times killed 4 player characters 2 where justified but the other 2 where for the luz and even wanted to change characters because he his "my magic isn't able to kill dragons"

The game in general was poorly done and I take responsibility for a lot of it going down hill so fast but that pixie is the one who pushed it over the edge again and again. Sad thing is he brags about how OP it was and how much fun he had OHK things even tho I wouldn't let him OHK a dragon with his rolls hitting 16+ most of the time.
>>
>>46808133

I'm to honest and always point out my mistake as soon as I spot them even in the middle if a game GM typical response is if you can't fix it now do it after the game. Still feel scummy as fuck

As a GM if it isn't to broken or if I like it better how the player interpreted I tell them to keep it how it is. Unless it's raw numbers

The game seems like it was rolling just fine on the beer*pretzels lane, except that fairy is a total asshole that abused game's freedom to run everybody's fun.
Should've booted him early on.
>>
>cheating is the gift man gives himself
>>
>>46808764

Truth be told I'm a shit GM but only one with extensive tabletop experience I can typically come up with a plot, npcs, and even ideas for character development but I always seem to lose control of my group.

I started up a new game same group with a new addition and I planned on making it very clear that this kinda shit wouldn't be tolerated but two of my players beat me to it. It's funny when you see other players yell at another player for meta gaming/optimizing and this be there first session ever.

lying about the results of a role in some rpg every now and then is not too bad, but messing with stats is a dick move and will only fuck over the rest of your team if you do. cheating in any competetive game is always a dick move for obvious reasons
>>
>>46808133
its an honest mistake just fix it as soon as you notice
>>
>>46808133
I prefer when it happens to give a different player an advantage than me because either way I prefer to just say what happened in the past is in the past and fix it from then on without reversing anything and I'd look like a piece of shit if I said that when an error is in my favor.
>>

I'm right here with you anon.

Why doesn't anyone pay attention to us? How much more "mysterious outsider" can you get when you even try to stick out for attention on anonymous messaging boards? I swear if nobody replies to me in five minutes I'm gonna pee myself and scream.
>>
>>46808871
I know you're quoting Mr. Burns but damnit cheating in a competition just shows you realized you were incapable of winning. I doubt a cheated award feels half as good as an earned one.

Also cheating in a casual game of any kind means you're a retard. Federal law.
>>
>>46809827
>cheating in a competition just shows you realized you were incapable of winning
Not if he cheats and wins.
>>
>>46809871
Competition is about proving who is better at the task at hand, not about proving who's the better cheater. If you cheat, you basically admit you couldn't win the competition so you changed the game.

Unless it's a cheating competition, of course, in which case go right ahead.
>>
I don't know because I have never played with one. Whole concept seems very silly to me. What would one achieve by cheating in a roleplaying game? It's not like a game you can win anyway. Don't understand it in context of (friendly) board or card games either because why would anyone risk losing his friends over a little bit of endorphins he gets from winning the game? In competitive gaming I can understand it because money is usually involved. I don't approve that, but don't really care either because I'm not interested in competitive gaming at all.

However, if you meant like minmaxing and powergaming then I can understand it in context of D&D (which is arguably more gamist type of game rather than role-playing type) and it I think can be very fun if everyone is doing it, but outside of D&D (or similar gamist games) I find it to be very pointless and doubt many GMs would even allow it.
>>
>>46800771
Depends on the game really.

If it's a casual get together over some cards, I'll bring it to everyone's attention and mock accordingly. Infact, if it's cooperative or competitive, that seems to work as well.

I'm not a fan of cheaters, it undermines the entire exercise of the evening. Hours of gameplay are rendered nearly moot if it turns out someone isn't jumping through the same hoops just because they're so insecure to even risk taking a loss.

in a cooperative game - it's ok as long as everyone else you're playing with is ok with it and/or don't get caught

in a singleplayer game - who the fuck cares? if you want to cheat just cheat

as a method of greifing/trolling - it's only funny so long as you're not on the wrong end of it
