As usual, I chose a raven familiar. When the DM asked me what language he speaks, I thought for a bit and answered - Dark Speech. -

It's a cute little thrush who likes to sing. It's a pathfinder character and the thrush introduced themselves to my character to reveal that my character is a magical girl

My wizard has a small Earth elemental that he adores greatly. It does triple duty as assistant/butler/work mule and knows my wizard's home better than he do. It also has more common sense than my wizard.

Pic related is one I tend use in Magical Girl games alot. I don't use Pathfinder for those games, so there's not much to go over with it mechanically, it's more of a quest-giver NPC than a combat asset.

That being said, just for flavor I usually end up giving it a few unsettling quirks like being able to phase through solid objects and hanging upside down like a bat... in mid air... when there's nothing for it to grip on to.

Ah, here we go, the much longer story to go with it. It's from a lonnnng time ago, but I still use this particular familiar in games to this day, especially with new groups.

a silver-haired forest bat (a real species) named "Sahandrian" (the name of Corellon's bow)
he hangs under my cloak and helps me hear reeeall gud.

Had a holygun paladin who had a Pipefox as a friend. He'd do his own thing and mental relay stuff back to him.
My clint eastwood paladin has shot the pipefox from his crossbow to give it highground on several occasions
