Yeah I already nabbed the Drider and a couple other variant classes I wanted to fold into shit.

I mean, conversion of materials takes like minimal effort I was just wondering if there was something to reduce it to zero effort.

In any case I can probably whip my notes up into a fifteen pager to post or some shit, so when someone else like me goes lookin', something will be there.

Okay, perfect thread.

I have never played a tabletop RPG before and want to run a campaign. Am playing with 4 other people in the same boat.

Which do I start with, the Dungeon World pdfs/book or the D&D 5e Starter Set?
>>
>>46707524
If you ask here, people will tell you to start with DW.
If you ask in the 5e general, people will tell you to start with 5e.

I don't see how that's supposed to help you.
>>
>>46707608
This. It depends on what kind of game you're looking for.
As I see it: dungeon world focusses more on accessible storytelling and D&D on tight game play.
Dungeon world is more akin to improv theatre than a video game.

Here's what you do: open both rulesbooks, start reading them, see which one gets you going. Because the D&D rulebook spoke to me and told me I'm better off with another game.
>>
>>46707524
If in doubt try both, run a one-shot adventure in D&D and then dungeon world, see what you and your group prefers and then continue running that

Dungeon World best first RPG to GM.

That said, anybody continue with it after that? I'm really glad it was the first game I GM'd, but now I would never consider running it unless I had a party consisting of 100% RPG newbies.
>>
>>46708706
Been gaming for like 20 years now. Started in 2e. While most of my greybeard buddies have migrated into the OSR retroclone scene, the only thing I keep coming back to is DW. Lets me largely ignore huge tables of stuff and tinkering with details so I can present fun shit for my players to explore.
>>
>>46708828
They don't begrudge the extremely limited character options?

I have to say, after having a taste of DW and seeking out other narrative RPG its pretty hard to vouch for anything but generalist, classless systems.
>>
Probably not the place to ask, but does anybody know which games are considered the best PbtA games. I've played DW and I'm looking for hacks that are built for different settings and styles of games.
>>
>>46708706
I find it's actually one of the better RPGs for experienced GMs because of the game's huge focus on relatively free-form roleplaying concerns (i.e. "the fiction"). When you don't have a lot of rules to hold on to the game rises or sinks to your level pretty quickly.

For example, the combats I run in Dungeon World are more realistic than combat in almost any other fantasy RPG. Why? Because I'm a HEMAfaggot and the rules encourage me to just say shit that makes sense and then it happens. The shit I say makes sense because of my experience, so the combat is realistic.

In fact that's why I am sort of hesitant to recommend DW to a new GM. It teaches you good improvisational table flow, but other than that the results are really just going to reflect how good a GM you are. I think it works at its best when you've got an experienced GM teaching new players, since it teaches RPG table flow better than any other RPG.
>>
>>46708919
>limited character options
Could you elaborate why you think character creation in DW is limited? Because: a pretty good amount of player generated character sheets + compendium classes + multiclass moves + the possibility to write your own moves... Seems like a lot of options.
>>
>>46709135
Moreover you select them when you want them instead of being tied to a linear level up table.

>>46708919
Nope, not one bit, because I fill out my game world, run with noncore materials as well; also, like other similar dungeon crawl-y games, anyone can attempt to do most anything with a roll, but if you have a class or move related to the task your results are better/more repeatable/flashier.
>>
>>46708972
>it teaches RPG table flow better than any other RPG
That's interesting. Its likely the designers of table-heavy RPGs think their tables are extremely natural and realistic and that's why they make them and encourage others to use them.

Personally I go hard on establishing what the 'rule of cool' consensus amidst the group is and rule things towards that.
>the results are really just going to reflect how good a GM you are
So I'm only as good a GM as I read what my player's want. Which means I'm a shit sometimes if I misjudge my players, but that seems fair enough to me. Proper discussion ought to rectify that soon enough.

I feel as though the common assertion that old\experienced\grognard players are devoid of imagination and only follow rules blindly is in fact more accurate of players who's experience lies in mostly unimaginative GM and videogames.
Most of the people I've played with are people I've introduced to the hobby or of a similar age\experience level to my own so I've never really played with grognards.

>>46709135
>player generated character sheets
You get to pick an option out of three, that's rather limited
>compendium classes + the possibility to write your own moves
I'd imagine the proportion of players who delve into this is extremely small. If players are so interested in engaging and creating new mechanics they'll quickly discover the world beyond DW
> multiclass moves
These are pretty great, but are still a limited subset of character possibilities.

Again I'll reiterate that I quickly moved onto classless systems after DW, so considering it lacking in options may just be a matter of perspective.
>>
>>46707779
>>46707809
I also got this draft of an Eberron thing.
>>
>>46709172
>You can try anything
That;s cool, and important. But what if someone wants to specialise in niche X and no such playbook exists? e.g. a Dragon Knight or a Leper King. Moving beyond the fantasy genre makes it all even harder. You can probably stitch together something, but the level of effort into homebrewing or investment into propriety playbooks gets steep quick. Balancing moves let alone a class ain't easy.

The lack of flexibility is a failing of the system to my eyes. Which isn't to say it isn't good at what it aims at.
>>
>>46708706
I'd rather not play it again.
Apocalypse World: Fallen Empires has all the fantasy without any of the shoehorned D&Disms.
>>
>>46709326
>what if someone wants to specialise in niche X and no such playbook exists?
Write one or import existing components.

>Moving beyond the fantasy genre makes it all even harder. You can probably stitch together something
Really? There are multiple AW hacks that deal with bug hunts or full blown Lovecraftian stuff.

So I guess I should ask what I should run for my friends that you approve of, anon?
