This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Useful links: http://pastebin.com/x6BqaJ7r
This link contains numerous writing guides, general advice, and various quest tools and communities.

https://twitter.com/Eisenstern/lists/quest-runner-directory
This is a directory containing the tweets of most current QM's. While a twitter is by no means mandatory, it is a useful tool for both you and your players. If you are a QM, simply post your Twitter here to have it added to the directory. Spamming your quest twitter with non-quest related tweets may result in its removal from the directory.

IRC Channels:
[The Cabal] #QMC @ Rizon.net (slightly related to quests; enjoys worldbuilding, mechanics and politics)
[Hugbox] #ques/tg/enerals @ Rizon.net (barely related to quests; enjoys Larro quests and anime)

>QM
Describe your approach to QMing. What do you do when when running/preparing your quest, and why do you do it?

>Player
Describe your preferred QM(s) writing style(s). What about the quest draws you in and keeps you engaged enough to play live?

>Bonus
Hope is a dangerous thing, Anon.

I'm redoing Cetic Monk Quest, (hopefully) better this time round. Old computer shit itself.

I look up various historical figures and events that inspire my story, and think what I should do with them. I also do a good bit of reading in various philosophical and religious texts, to inform the views of the various sects I have running around.

I might do a one shot today. It would be about a number of warriors of different cultures and eras who fight to the death to become the new god of war and also avoid a catastrophe that happened in their times.

It would be something like the Hunger Games. I can tell about the warriors that I have planned if you guys want.

What do you think of this concept?

>Harry Potter Quest: D&D Edition

You are a young, lightning bolt scarred wizard with a great destiny to defeat the Dark Lord Voldemort ahead of you.

However, to become powerful enough to challenge him, you have some dungeons to raid, monsters to kill, and treasure to steal. Try not to die on the way.

Ruleset: AD&D 1e or B/X

A combination of quest and play-by-post in randomly generated generated dungeons.
>>
>>46688531
No.
>>
>>46688531

Trying to run a quest using straight up tabletop rules kills the quest.
>>
>>46688563
A lot of it would be in the background, and things like B/X and similar retroclones are fairly rules-light
>>
>>46688531
>Harry potter
>AD&D

No.

My reasoning for this is that to properly use a setting, you need a system that encourages the setting. Using the harry potter setting does not work with D&D, specifically because HP wizards don't seem to have a limit on spells, not to mention that HP spells don't work like D&D spells do.

There's also the fact that trying to run a quest using explicit RPG rules is a near impossibility. The players are nowhere nearly coherent enough for the GM to give them the control they need, and the QM ends up having way too much on their table to do stuff.

That said, if you used a non-shit system, I'd be up for it...

>>
>>46688563
Yeah. Doppleganger damacy only ran for like, 40 threads man, and all the game of thrones quests that are running right the fuck now, man they are like fucking graveyards when it comes to participation. That shit kills threads like no other.

>>
>>46688618

But he wasn't, anon, I was. I stopped responding to you be a use you seemed like a needlessly combative shitposter who wasn't trying to discuss anything in good faith, you just wanted to argue.

I mean, the fact you get angry about the idea of Reddit and Tumblr users coming to /tg/ (ignoring for a second the idea that people can't visit more than one website) doesn't fit with this scorn against people who know more of the board's inside jokes than you.
>>
>>46688705
>I mean, the fact you get angry about the idea of Reddit and Tumblr users coming to /tg/
That wasn't even me.
I'm just ridiculing you for using the oldfag meme.
>>
>>46688675

I'm not familiar with Doppelganger Damacy, did it run an AD&D system? Obviously no rule of thumb is absolute, but the few quests I've seen where someone tries to literally use Dungeons and Dragons rules without any attempt to streamline and adapt are usually just too slow.

Also I don't understand why it would have to be Harry Potter, especially if the QM isn't going to use the Hogwarts setting or anything else from the books.
>>
>>46688583
>You've got to have at least heard of it if you've spent a month or so on /tg/.
I've been to /tg/ for 2 years now. First time hearing about it. Stop spouting bullshit and starting drama.
>>
>>46688507
Skub is a meme, in that it's an idea and memetics is literally the study of the genetics of ideas. Skub refers to anything which has an active community which hates it and another active community that loves it. On 4chan as a whole this might be anime, while on /tg/ it might be 40k and among 40k fans it might be the modern necrons. Not knowing this quite common bit of jargon does suggest you havent been on 4chan longer than, say, two or three years.
>>
>>46688751
And just before I post you confirm that you have only been on tg for 2 years.
>>
>>46688756
If it's such a common bit of jargon, how come people who has been exposed to the site for 2-3 years haven't heard about it?
>>
>Thread went from quest discussion
>to shitposting
>to some anon trying to feel superior because he's wasted more time of his life on 4chan
Truly, these generals are the peak of /tg/.
>>
>>46688792
Ah, yes they are. Thanks for setting an example.
>>
>>46688779

Maybe you just aren't very attentive.
>>
>>46688842
That can't really be a porper argument when the time-frame is 2-3 years for a "common bit of jargon".
>>
>>46688779
Things fall in and out of favor. Three years was the absolute limit to how long you could have been here without exposure, no matter how tertiary /tg/ is to your primary interests. You were probably exposed to the idea multiple times and just understood it from context, without actually realizing it was a common expression or you saw it and moved on without caring very much about understanding it.

I am not morally judgeing you for being new, or for having better things than fucking /tg/ to do. I started visiting this place (4chan, tg wasn't a thing yet) at nine, and over a decade later I can't let go. You should probably get out before it's too late, anon.
>>
>>46686149

>>
>>46688886
>Three years was the absolute limit to how long you could have been here without exposure, no matter how tertiary /tg/ is to your primary interests.
What are you basing this on? And I've never heard or read the word "skrub" before. Pretty sure I'd remember it. I've heard/read "scrub", but that is not relevant to this.
>>
So this came to my mind a while ago - Kender Quest. Will you travel the world and borrow all sorts of treasures while evading angry townsfolk or will you get slaughtered by adventurers trying to murder you for free?
>>
>>46688578
While I am a 40k fan, a couple of things are putting me off.

1. Pre-existing character as quest MC. That makes it fanfiction-tier, and that makes me leery of joining it.
2. The Tau are the least retarded and least 40k-ish faction, which makes them the least entertaining antagonists you could have chosen.
>>
>>46688928
It's skub, you retard
>>
>>46688928
According to archive moe "skub" has been posted, in text, over 2000 times since the first of january 2014. Skub is also a common image posted, even without text, and is one the /tg/ banners. The chance that you haven't at least seen the banner is essentially non-existant. Just because you have seen it doesn't mean that you have had enough context to understand it.

I thought the Tau as the main antagonist because they would be the closest ones to Kaurava and military victory over them would certainly help Stubbs ascension.

heavy description, like the QM writes a couple of posts worth detail for each event or action.
a setting I can dig my teeth firmly into and/or easily understand. (Nazi germany, the Worm-Verse, Marvel comics universe, Hellborne quest) this means that the QM answers setting questions when they're asked.

that said, can we have a moment to remember good quests that never finished in the distant past?

The original Doppleganger Damacy was 3.5e, while the bootleg/reboot was pathfinder. There was a pretty good one on a dead forum that was based on exalted 2e

The core concept of doppleganger damacy was simple: you started as a humaniod with no special abilities, one hit die and 10 in every stat that looked like a grey alient. whenever you ate something the size of a rat or larger you got to choose one trait that thing possesed. This could be a skill where they had more pointts than you, an attribute higher than your respective attribute, a feat, a racial ability, a language, class features like spellslots or sneak attack die or their appearance. It could only have been run on a hard system, and it worked well because the players decided general strategy, followed by the qm rolling out the result.

someone said it did anyway.

Main character has martial arts prowess which includes thrown objects, and an ability to see weaknesses in opponents if anyone would like to contribute thoughts and ideas...

That shit is much more about quests and their discussion than half the standard bullshit that goes on in here.

like, would you rather hear complaints about a QM that actually runs and maybe have a discussion about the purpose of dice or the nature of choice?

Still have it? I wouldn't mind reading whatever thoughts you had on the matter. The topic kind of interests me.

>Are there too many anime quests?
No.

> I sometimes hear complaining about it from those outside the anime quest audience but they seem popular enough to draw in a decent amount of questers.
This is an anime forum. Anime quests are to be expected. Those who dislike anime can put up or shut up.
>>
>>46691784
Mods probably assumed someone unable to parse why doing this is something of a bitch ass faggot was under 18 and needed a ban.

> But I remember when

Shut the fuck up, I was there and /b/ was never good. Go the fuck back to plebbit if you want to do that sort of stuff. Or at least /b/.
>>
>>46696410
Nah. I don't feel like typing out another essay about the illusion of choice. But the crux was that it is incredibly easy for a QM to fool his players without them ever knowing about it and so complaining about railroading is both pointless and probably hitting more false positives than not.
On the flipside however, it also means a QM whose railroading is genuinely transparent to all is just a really bad QM in general because this shit is fucking easy, come on son.
>>
>>46696483
I wasn't banned, so you're wrong there.

You're acting like I listed his house address.

I talked about his kickstarter and his webcomic and him coming onto qtg drunk and bitching.

I'm sorry, when did we suddenly start supporting namefags?

Why don't you go back to tumblr if you don't like this site.
>>
>>46696308

I hear what you're saying. I think it comes down to mods having a lot of shit to filter and not a lot of time, so if they see something that even looks like doxxing they delete it out of hand to be safe.

Remember these guys often moderate more than just one board, and by job definition they see a concentrated dose of the worst posters on the board, because they're the ones that get reported. Imagine dealing with the dregs of /v/ every fucking day and you kind of have an idea.
>>
>>46696494
I think obvious railroading comes in two forms - The one where the QM is generally shit, in which the QM tries to conceal it and just mucks it up really hard.

The second form would be when them QM panics from a player choice or action they never would've thought would happen. It was obvious in Shadow Quest with the "Avatar of Chaos" and in German Hollow Quest with the sword.

So i think saying all QM's with obvious railroading are shit is wrong, since writing quality can depend very heavily on stress or other outside factors.

I basically want to say that QM's that fuck up once with obvious railroading don't have to be shit.
>>
>>46696537
This is a bad case of sawing the branch you're sitting on you're having.
>>
>>46696624
What does that even mean?
>>
>>46696537
Oh. Well I just kind of wanted to shit post and thought you were actually posting personal info because I know some people in his quest know him IRL.

Then again, unless you're Duke then posting things like his Kickstarter or Patreon are verboten.

> MFW I enjoy my hate

Bitch you don't know me. I'm already on Tumblr it has the best porn.

>>46696494
Railroading is pretty much a necessity in narrative quests, yes?

Perhaps you've heard of giving someone enough rope to hang themselves with?

Or in the words of DJ Khaled, "Congratulations you just played yourself."
>>
>>46696644
>posting things like his Kickstarter or Patreon are verboten.

Didn't even post em.

Talked about them.

Said anybody who reads his quest can find links to them because he himself posts them. Vox would not even deny this truth.

Am I not allowed to say these facts?

>>46696661
I get the metaphor, I just don't understand which position I'm sawing my branch with.
>>
>>46696721
You follow DLQ, don't you? And quests in general? There's criticism and just driving QMs off. But hey, it's not like it didn't already happen with drawfags. Let's not say the average 4chan user has anything between his two ears.
>>
>>46696608
That's true, sometimes the playerbase can take us for a ride. And sometimes you're just not having a good day and so the thread can really go downhill as a result.
I think in such situations using 'Yes and..." or "Yes but..." is better than simply "No" however.
>>
>>46696644
>Railroading is pretty much a necessity in narrative quests, yes?

Yes, but you're not actually supposed to acknowledge it. A good QM railroads his audience without them ever realizing it.
>>
>>46696753
You can't say I've driven off Vox, because he's still here.

He asks for critique. At that point in the thread, he was being critiqued by someone else.

Vox actually made a positive change to his quest after reading what I wrote, with the use of a tiebreaker roll when a decision was evenly split.

My criticism has contributed to the quality of a quest.

I'm super special.
>>
How's that Vox is so spoken of yet his quest has such low answers and participation. Smells fishy as fuck
>>
>>46696894
>40 unique ips
>low participation

He's slow as shit, takes hours to write maybe four posts, but does it daily.
>>
>>46696894
>40 IPs
>low participation
senpai...
>>
>>46696911
Uh, i might be wrong then. It's just that I remember seeing one of his threads and it had like 13 answers and had been active for several hours.
>>
>>46696955
>active for several hours.

so 1 post from Vox or maybe 2 if you're lucky

So he got thirteen responses to one vote.

That's better than most.
>>
>>46696955
He runs constantly, so sometimes threads get refreshed at odd times.

But he's consistently in the 40s.

The other thing is that Vox is aggressive about getting feedback, so his quest actually gets better and better.

If you want to see a criminally under-posted quest, look at Valen Quest.

>>46696807
> MFW I switch between being polite with Vox and raging shit posts with the other Anons who jump on his dick and insist nothing is wrong. Especially when I bring up dice.

> MFW my write in posts also still keep winning.

They hate us cause they anus. Also Vox' fan base is a little rabid about "since I enjoy this it means it's perfect".
>>
>>46697280
Which is funny, since he keeps asking for critique.

Like, imagine a slightly chubby person saying, hey, give me weight loss tips.

And when you attempt to do it, an entire legion of body image police jump to their rescue and try their damnedest to explain how calories in calories out isn't a perfect explanation and other such nonsense.

If Vox is an actual published writer, I assume his ego can venture outside the hugbox every once in a while.

Honestly, I'm kind of done talking about it. Just tired. Other posters are fags what else is new, Vox handles his shit like an adult so really I should just stop taking the bait and not respond to them. Hell, they posted that wqd was having a civil war around the time of >>46688467.

But like I said, I enjoy my rage. So I will probably continue shit posting when there are 6 hours between posts as is tradition.
