How do you deal with a paladin's oaths? Are you strict or lenient about breaking them?

I'm working on a warlock homebrew. What's the best way to design new pacts? Ideally I'd like to include 3 new options for pacts in addition to the new archetype that I'm developing. But the baseline pacts vary so wildly in power level and utility that it's hard.

SO the next part of my campaign is taking place on the high seas. I'm excited as a few of my players have the Sailor background so it should be exciting.

I'm looking for some good ship tokens to use for combats, especially when multiple ships get involved. Would like something relatively small, so taking up either 1x1, 2x1, but no bigger than say 4x4 (standard square maps). This way I can really scale out the distance of these combats and have multiple ships involved. i want them to feel like part of something huge, but still be the determining factors.

Anyone got any ideas for good tokens, either ones I can buy, print out, or make easily? I know at one time Walmart sold some kind of ship game where you popped out the pieces and snapped them together from think cardboard. That still a thing?

Thanks dewds

What I meant was that the town's name probably named after a notable historical event or nearby geological feature.

Perhaps it was founded by a herd of settlers who took the fact that their cattle could graze upon the grass which grew there despite the blackish color of the soil to be a sign? Then you maybe you could call it Blackbarrow.

Was it originally expanded from a small military fortification, when a foolish king centuries ago set upon the idea of expanding towards? Perhaps the original slang the soldiers used to refer to it became corrupted over the years into Barksfort?

Maybe the mountain to the north is called Ander's Mount, and the town appropriated the name of the location it was in, which then slowly changed over the years into Anderly?

Or, you could just not give a fuck and call it Nat.

How about 36d20. You can then rearrange them into combination of 6 groups of 6 each, take the average. Round down on half of them, and round up on the other half. Then assign the resulting 6 numbers to your stats.
>>
>>46576800
Pump Strength. If you're low level, you'll want to get that bonus to hit first off. GWM comes later, when you have sufficient abilities to mitigate the penalty to hit. The extra attack on crit doesn't come in often enough to justify the effective penalty to damage from hitting less just yet.

>>
>>46577037
Even so, I would say to max out your Str first.

Let's say, for simplicity, you're hitting about half the time. That means you can afford to use GWM's bonus damage one quarter of the time, meaning a theoretical maximum of 2.5 + (average attack damage/20 [from the crit effect]) additional damage per hit.

Realistically, you won't use more than half the times that you can, and will end up missing because of it quite a few times, because you have to declare it prior to attacking. You simply cannot rely on it. If I had to make a guess, I'd say that you'd get an actual average of less than 1 additional damage per attack.

Funnily enough, you already get upwards of 1 additional damage from adding +2 to your Strength - and your Maneuvers are freed up to do more useful things.

This is a matter of opinion, of course, not to mention quite a bit of guesswork. It's difficult to actually quantify the effect of GWM without the exact statistics of the character and more time than I'm personally willing to spend. Do whatever you feel fits your character.

I have 15 con and 16 int on my Wizard. Should I get resilient con first for a big boost to my saving throws, or just get the 2 int?
>>
>>46577434

Honestly, either choice is good.

Getting the extra health and proficiency with Con saves will be good for concentration checks. And getting more Int is always good because you need to max that shit out.

If you're using buff spells and finding yourself getting hit a lot, get the feat. Otherwise, Int is (ironically) a no-brainer.

IIRC, its actually always more beneficial to go GWM instead of +2 str. It only starts to get close at really high ACs, and even then it doesn't count that you get an extra attack on crits.

That being said, missing all the time feels shitty and I usually find it more fun to be able to hit most of my attacks in an encounter. It makes you feel like garbage if you literally do nothing (which could easily happen at low levels when you only have 1 attack with no bonus to the roll because of the -5 from GWM)

>>
>>46578055
Saw a spreadsheet somebody made with the data ages ago. Its only ever better to not power attack against targets with monstrously high ACs (typically 20+, depending on your attack bonus) and as long as you don't have anything messing with your weapon damage. If your DM gives you a magic sword that does an extra 10d6 damage or something silly, its not going to be a good idea to use GWM unless they have a ridiculously low AC.

Maximum AC = attack bonus - damage/2 + 16

>>
>>46578415
There's more caveats. You don't need to GWM if you've been counting HP and know that a normal hit can finish this enemy, or if you have condition-granting attacks (Battlemasters) where it'd be worth it to take a damage penalty to ensure a hit so that you apply Knockdown and your entire party doesn't miss the fucker from that point on.

i take GWM as a sword and boarder

thatsthepoint.tiff

Shields are wieldable, so they can be IMPROVISED weapons.
You have proficiency with improvised weapons.
That means you can wield a shield without penalty.
Wielding a shield is all that's necessary to gain +2 AC.
Your shield is also a 1d4 weapon that lets you grapple people when you bonk them with it now.
>>
>>46579944
I don't buy it.
>>
>>46579944
This is insanely autistic rules-lawyering over the fact that the phrase used is, "Wielding a shield," not, "Wielding a shield to shield yourself," or, "Wielding a shield defensively," but I think you might be technically correct (the best kind of correct) on that level, so long as your DM is enough of a robot to acknowledge that.
>>
shield is an armor though. At best, this just lets you hit people with it using a 1d4. Yeah, you get the +2AC because anybody would, but you're still not proficient with "Shields", so you now have disad on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves str or dex, and you can't cast spell.

might as well make the same argument for putting on a suit of plate and then bodysmashing people while wearing it.
>>
>>46579944
If you want to be that rules-lawyery about it, I'll raise you one further, and note that shields are discrete from armor, and only armor has any sort of penalty for wearing it non-proficiently.
>>
And besides... after how many battles does an improvised shield just become your regular shield? You're not going to be able to find something to improvise with every time.

>>46579999
No? Follow me down this rabbit hole of madness even further.

Dual Wielder grants you +1 AC while you have a separate melee weapon in each hand. Your shield, being an improvised weapon, is also a melee a weapon now, which you qualify for two-weapon fighting (when you previously did not) because you no longer require your weapons to be Light (which shields aren't).

That means, by having NO FUCKING CLUE how to use a shield in the proper way that Fighters and Paladins and all those other guys are taught, you paradoxically gain AN EVEN GREATER DEFENSIVE BENEFIT from them through your absurdly unorthodox fighting style.

The only pity is that there's a hard limit on only getting one AC benefit from shields at a time, so while you can certainly dual-wield shields now, it doesn't double your shield AC and is strictly worse in damage. But you could probably cajole your DM into letting you give yourself half/full cover by hiding behind two tower shields whenever you want.

>>
>>46580228
fucking darkvision, dungeons aren't shit when half the party can see literally everything. may as well be in nicely lit castles with flowers on the fucking walls.
>>
>>46580211
Wis save or stunned makes sense, there are periods where you're utterly gone but then a little bit later you could regain your senses. Group saves makes sense too (don't want to do 5 rolls for NPCs) since if one loses it that could easily trigger the rest. Charm is a great idea too though.
>>
>>46580288
On the contrary, darkvision only lets you see in darkness as though it was dim light, and dim light as though bright light - and generally only to 60 feet. You still take a penalty to Perception if you don't have some kind of light source.
>>
>>46580288
Bear in mind that they see with DIM light in darkness. Dim light means -5 passive perception, making traps and ambushes a lot harder to notice.
>>
>>46579944
I dunno, this seems rather roundabout.

For example, what if you have the Duelling fighting style? It's already been ruled that it works with shields, but it specifically disallows the use of another weapon in that hand. So what is it? An Improvised Weapon or a Shield?

I can buy that you can occasionally use your shield as an improvised weapon, but not the other way around.

Deep gnomes are a bit of an exception I imagine (look at that dour face!), but in the PHB gnomes are described as basically constantly happy & enthusiastic jokesters that sometimes hyper-focus onto some STEM task. A player could easily turn this love-of-life some lolrandom shittery.

That being said, I haven't seen anybody play a gnome myself, and a poor player will probably be a poor player no matter what they choose.

Any tips for how an Open Hand monk should be handling combat encounters? A member of my party is playing one and feels kind of inadequate, but he's just rolling to hit four times every turn, trying to think of advice to give him in terms of how he SHOULD be playing it.
>>
>>46581086
Two of those attacks with flurry are going to have extra effects. He should be moving enemies around, knocking them down for his allies to hit at, and generally being a great single-target controller.
>>
I've only had one gnome player and he was pretty alright. A little on the goofy side, but more so because he didn't know the rules very well and would just ask if he was able to do something. I remember him taking a running dive into a hot spring and using it to slip up on enemies and sneak attack them whilst we distracted them.

Think he died to a dragon because when we were in full retreat from it he tried to slip away in a different direction.
>>
>>46581086
Has he hit 5th level yet? He should be using his Open Hand Technique and Stunning Strike to assist the rest of the party.

I've wanted to make a drow for a while now, mainly because i love the whole underground society thing from drizzt. That being said, however, i know that drizzt has been made probably thousands of times by this point. What would be a good setup/build/backstory for a drow, im thinking warlock?

In Out of the Abyss module, my drow is hunting for his sister's killer, was ambushed by some slavers paid off by said killer, then sold to other drow and thrown in a prison camp (cue begin of module). Character is searching for clues of murderer's whereabouts while dodging drow patrols.

I treat the rest of the party like the filthy above-worlders that they are (especially that filthy god damned surface elf). Most of early campaign has been the party not killing me for my knowledge of the Underdark and me not killing them for their ability to soak of drow crossbow bolts.

Now, I have had my character's attitude be a bit edge lord, but he IS native drow, and the most practical choices (in his eyes) have typically been "kill them, take whatever is useful, and throw the bodies down the nearest chasm."

For the most part, it has been fun for everyone, even the filthy, filthy, wood elf player. Hell, most of the time it's the other players (mostly out of character) suggesting my character murdering characters (especially the wood elf) when no one is looking.

>>
How do you rule one player throwing a weapon to another player? Let's assume the weapon doesn't have the Thrown property.
>>
>>46582459
In battle? Maybe having one player ready an action to either catch or throw, then when the other player's turn is up, the throw happens. I dunno really...
>>
>>46581744
I'm pretty nub so I can't give much, what type of advice are you looking for? I made my pact of the tome the necronomicon. I like to use telepathy and then make spooky mad gibbering noises in people's heads, maybe use an at will self-image to project something horrifying.
>>
>>46582459

I would say: can auto throw to player within 20ft (improvised throwing weapons have a normal range of 20ft and long range of 60), catcher must use their "use object action to catch said object"

past 20 ft? maybe make an attack roll against AC 5-10

possibly require the catcher to make a simple DC dex or str check to catch particularly dangerous/fragile or heavy objects.
>>
>>46582060
Is your Paladin Oath "Be a little faggy bitch"?
>>
>>46582459
Probably something like:
Throwing player takes an action to make the throw, which requires a Dex-based attack roll but succeeds automatically (barring fumbles) as long as the receiving player is within range.

Receiving player has to use a reaction to make a Dex check under the thrower's attack roll to catch it. On a failure, or if no reaction is spent, the weapon falls to the floor, rolling a 1d10 to determine which square around the character the weapon falls into.

>>
>>46582652
At first level... MAYBE second. Otherwise no.
>>
>>46582652
For the early levels, sure. Until about level 3 or so.

I think there's rules in either the PHB or DMG for not using experience that recommends the first few sessions end in a level up.
>>
>>46582652
The DMG recommends one session each for levels 1 and 2 and then gaining a new level every 2-3 sessions after that.

I would recommend not doing session-based advancement. Sessions can be far too variable in length and productivity. Instead, do milestone advancement based on story advancement or let XP fall as it may, depending on the tone and style of your campaign

Player 1 uses Interaction to throw, player 2 uses Reaction to catch. >>
>>46582652
Unless they really do literally nothing, yes for early levels.

I tend to rush level 3 a bit mostly so they get their first feat early, and then I slow it down a it, then past level 6 (when the first tier of specialization abilities comes for most people) I more or less slow it down even more than is expected by the rules.

Hmmm, so maybe get them to level 3 and a new level (based on milestones since XP tracking just seems a bit silly) every 2-3 sessions or so? I ask because I'm beginning to plan out what I expect to be a long term campaign in a desert setting based on (pic related). The campaign we're currently on has been getting fast-tracked (1, or even 2 levels per session) due to a player leaving for college soon.

As an extension of this, any tips for a desert setting? I'm wondering if it can fulfill an entire campaign or if I should extend them into other regions such as an arctic. My current thoughts are a city ruled over by five wizard kings of different traditions (Evocation, Divination, Abjuration, Necromancy, and Transmutation/Possibly Illusion), with the city guard run by the Necromancer King's undead thralls and citizens voluntarily offering themselves after death, with Reapings occurring during times of high crime and war (it's considered a great honor to be chosen for a reaping)

Thoughts for cool things to happen in a desert setting/points of contention/BBEG's?

Hey, they then have to try chase the guy, while likely in combat (bad idea) or let the sword go. Then you can give them a fun quest to try retrieve the sword, where they trace it through the black market, shaking down some shady goods dealers along the way, until they eventually track it down to the current owner. Plot twist, it's a nobleman who was the original owner who had it stolen from him some years ago who has spent thousands of gold trying to tracking it down because it's a valuable family heirloom and him losing it was a great shame. What do the party do?

How do i make some low level magic items that don't overpower the PCs
I was thinking gauntlets that do + D4 damage for my monk player, despite him doing up to 4d4 damage in a round.

Or should any magic items just be vanity/non combat
>>
>>46583099
You could, but it might be superfluous.

Honestly I just go for the latter and just have the equivalent of +0 magical weapons and armors be either silvered or mithril as extremely expensive trinkets. That way they can still deal with mundane resistant threat in a non-magical way (all you need is a master smith who knows the right runes and methods) and still have room for magical items that aren't this if they want something else.
>>
Any good 3rd party content yet? A friend of mine is running a game and I was wondering if any interesting classes have been made yet.
>>
>>46583099
http://lordbyng.net/inspiration/ has a weak magic item generator

Just skim through the gm guide and see if there's anything that sounds interesting. Power some of the good stuff down if you want, mesh the ideas, give stronger items potential downsides or a low number of charges. Don't worry about breaking it too much - just use your head. Maybe give the monk gloves with 3 daily charges that let him add d4 fire/radiant/X damage instead of a straight d4.

But it's your game, so whatever you give them just keep it in mind as you progress.
>>
>>46583051
Are you playing in my campaign?
Here's a hint: There's a Tarrasque.
>>
>>46583202
Forgot to add one thing - and this is dependent on your players - but try to make at least some of the magic items interesting. Don't shoehorn in the epic story of the hundred year old monk who wore the gauntlets from his 10th birthday until his deathbed, infusing them with his essence and skill, but maybe have a small inscription on the gauntlets with that hundred year old monk's name on them. Give the items a bit of mystery or character, so they're not just "those +1 gloves" or "that fire damage ring".

Like I said this is pretty player-dependent. Some guys just want the +3 Sworf of Orc Fucking and don't care where it came from, but if you think your players would dig it or aren't sure, give it a shot.

Majority should be non-combat. Encourage them to find unconventional solutions to problems.

Give them some items which give them alternative options in combat, that are roughly as potent as what they can already do, but in different ways.

You could also use some items to boost severely sub-optimal builds so they perform almost (but not quite) as well as the optimized ones.

I don't see how you need to speed up leveling to make the game go over more quickly. Do you have a high-level BBEG you want them to be able to fight at the end and they wouldn't reach the point where they can if you didn't speed it up? In that case just make them start at a higher level/do training camp for a month or so and level them up to 5-7 or so, levelling up quickly to me seems like it would just make it seem more like a game, gaining a ton of power compared to how long they adventure and how old they are (30-year-old soldier gets 10x stronger from travelling 5 days).

Say I wanted to make a war paint that gave an extra Attack action to its target for the duration of a minute or so, as well as immunity to mental effects (frightened, charmed), temporary nightvision, and a flat damage bonus.
Basically, a berserker's hallucinogenic treatment as a war paint.
What sorts of drawbacks would justify such a powerful war paint's existence but not absurd widespread use?
I'm thinking levels of exhaustion, temporary blindness, and poison damage.
Maybe Madness?
>>
>>46583990
A mystic should be able to do reasonably well.

There's a very large number of random encounters; sometimes, bullshit hard encounters will be rolled.

Assume everything is evil, treat it like it's not.

Yes, you CAN take those. It's more a question of if you should.
>>
>>46584177
Actually, I'm thinking of switching out the flat damage bonus to Brutal (extra weapon die for damage).
Obviously, it would benefit barbs and Champions a ton.
>>
>>46584177
Exhaustion and poison damage would be good, imo.

Something I thought of when thinking about it briefly is that the war paint is actually tattoo'd on the person, but a single point on the tattoo is left unfinished. The user activates the tattoo's magic by pricking themselves on the unfinished location, and the blood from the wound completes the tattoo, causing it to glow fiercely and activate its effects.

Just an idea. Might use this for some WoD stuff, actually.

On my end, the tattoo is activated by a war chant due to its inherent mystical properties.
The paint burns its way into the skin at the end of the chant, leaving a permanent set of marks where it was and scars if used more than once.
It makes itself into a tattoo as it enters the skin to the bloodstream, basically.

What I've got so far:
>Extra Attack action
>Cannot be Frightened
>Cannot be Charmed
>Nightvision 60 ft if not already present
>Brutal (extra weapon die)
>Immunity to Psychic damage?)
>Lasts for CON score rounds
>Each turn afterwards, make DC 15 CON save or lose the effects, DC increases by 5 each extra turn
>When you fail, suffer two levels of Exhaustion, take 4d6 -> 3d6 -> 2d6 -> 1d6 poison damage on subsequent turns, DC 15 halves.
I won't be giving it resistance to weapon damage because it's technically different from rage (and I assume it has different effects on the body).
Difference being that in Rage your body actually gets hurt less and under the effects of the paint you just lack concern to being harmed.
>>>46584259

Maybe Blinded if Exhaustion becomes Level 3 or higher.

one player hates attacks of opportunity and thinks we should entirely remove them from the game. He constantly forgets about them and gets hit by shit when there was no real reason to move. he's a rogue

other player has that fucking Lucky perk and for some reason believes it means that he gets to re-roll whatever he wants/gets to make enemies reroll when they attack him. By that I mean it'll be something like an enemy attacks him, rolls high enough to hit him, and after I announce that the enemy hits he tries to spend a luck point to re-roll (despite the phb straight up saying "before the outcome is determined") and then we spend five minutes arguing about this shit

also they all constantly do the "Why should my character do this" whenever I try to make an adventure happen or fucking anything really (the kicker: they're all lawful or good)

I'd enjoy dm'ing for a group who actually played but I'm sick of having to prompt them to do ANYTHING. We're like six sessions in and they still don't bother perception checking "empty" dungeon rooms. I've explained to them how all this shit works and they just fucking forget ten minutes later.
>>
Say I wanted to go ahead and make use a map with multiple doors and openings to alternate paths. What's the best way to handle this without the players gaining too much information to metagame. I know my players will say they are not going to metagame and they may honestly try, but when you can see all the rooms and what not, it alters what you think. I want to be able to make it so that they only see what is in front of them, no more until they go into the next room. I'm open to both digital and physical ideas.

An example is this cave. I want to make it so they can't actually see the whole cave, just where they are and possibly where they have been.
>>
>>46585108
I tell them if my attack roll hits them, and then let them use luck if they want. I do not tell them what their attack does, though they usually understand to attack a few times to figure out AC and the like before using their luck. I don't know how you retards are fucking up Lucky so bad.

You sound a bit whiny too though, if you're not having fun with the derelicts, stop DMing for them. Give them a chance if they're your buddies, tell them to read the PHB and be involved in their character's background and persona for RPing, if they don't shape up then fucking bounce. Simple.
>>
>>46585137
Is this an IRL session?

just make a big ol' print and then cover up what they can't see with paper or something
>>
>>46585137
We sometimes used to cover up parts of the map until they explored them. Kind of annoying though. The other way is to just explain it to them (When I play, sometimes I draw maps)

If its important, you can cover part of the map, show them the relevant part, then take it back and rely on their memory.
>>
>>46585146
>I don't know how you retards are fucking up Lucky so bad
Wait, so he's a retard for wanting his player to use the rules as they're written?
>>
>>46585147

This is indeed an IRL session. So just cut out paper specifically in the shapes of the map, tape them over and remove them when they enter said room? I guess that could work. Still has the underlying issue of showing the rooms dimension.

>>46585161
That's sort of what we do currently. We got one of those MASSIVE dry erase play mats and I just have one player draw it out, but it can ruin the pacing for it at times. Especially when they start drawing it and it doesn't add up and the dimensions are retarded.
>>
>>46585146
>I tell them if my attack roll hits them, and then let them use luck if they want

the PHB straight up says "before the outcome is determined". That means before they know if they hit or not or if they get hit or not or fail the save

i've explained this to the guy multiple times. If he rolls an 8 to hit a bugbear he should be able to assume "well, that won't hit" and then spend a point and re-roll.

letting them do the luck shit after they know it's going to hit them or not or if they fail or not or etc is metagamey as fuck and not what I want anywhere near my campaign. Him taking the feat is already super meta because he doesn't play his character as if extreme luck was a part of his personality or something, he just saw the perk and said "that's really good" and took it.
>>
>>46585146
Is that not how you're supposed to use lucky? Because that's how i've used it in both 5E games i've played and nobody stopped me, including my current game.

THE WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU PLAYING WITH THESE SPERGS
>>
The ghoul conversation of the other day made me think...if I have a poison that triggers on hit and I attack a lycanthrope with a nonmagical weapon, will he get poisoned (if he fails the Con save)? I mean by rules, because my GM doesn't allow it for players, but does it if the monster is the one poisoning players.
>>
>>46585194
they're good irl friends of mine and wanted to play

they enjoy our sessions and always tell me they had a good time and want to play again, it's just these couple things.

Bigger problem really is that I just don't like DM'ing, coupled with my players being grating at times and the work it takes to do a decent session and I just don't enjoy it
>>
>>46585202
It depends. Is it a Contact or an Injury poison?

A Contact poison would work against the lycanthrope, as it only needs to come into contact with the poison. An Injury poison would not work as the lycanthrope doesn't take damage from non-magical physical weapon attacks
>>
>>46585223
>>46585202
Unless you are talking about something like a Giant Poisonous Snake for example, in which case the lycanthrope will take the poison damage even if it doesn't take the piercing damage from the Bite

Anyhow, are there any rules for creatures that would make good kaiju stand ins? Besides the iconic tarrasque of course. My plan is to slowly filter in rumors and reports of disasters that seem to be not so random, and have warring kingdoms and guilds stop fighting and have closed door meetings about something.

Then have mages and priests start going mad when they look into it.

And to add more tension, have parasites on kaijus that attack villages and what not to make the PCs think the parasites are the real threat instead of side effects.

Caim lost his only hope of ever being loved by his family again. Granted, he'd lost like 90% of it at that point (when making the pact) because he used to love to just spend time with his family, and idolised his father, who was a kind and courteous king. After parents got killed by a black dragon and Furiae became the next sacrificial lamb, he got way angrier/edgier and started enjoying killing everything for revenge, but it was the loss of his voice that cemented this from "probably can live happily ever after w/ Furiae after one last war" to "fucked."

I'd say Caim lost the greater part of who he was, but as he'd already been losing it beforehand due to Crapsack World, Inuart's loss looks bigger.

So how good are wizards from level 3 to 10 (assume a level 3 start) FOR REAL, compared to, like, a bard or a cleric?

Assume your DM isn't going out of their way to hand out new spells, but isn't deliberately trying to deprive you of spells either.

Seems like finding spells and blowing precious gold on scribing them is going to put a damper on you a lot of the time. Yeah, yeah, you get bonus spells at level ups, but clerics get ALL THE SPELLS, bonus domain spells auto-prepared, and medium armor and shields.

What do wizards REALLY have going for them? Rituals?

Barbs are as bad as pre-17 Blade-locks if they can't use GWM. You might as well ask to reroll as a caster, because melee without GWM and range without Sharpshooter are mediocre.

At CR 5 there are plenty of enemies that have AC outside of what a Barb would be able to hit reliably with GWM even with reckless unless they had support spells.

It's your DM being bad.

The 'best' is tricky, person- who-is- almost- definitely-not-checking-this-thread-anymore. For 5e, I most prefer Critical Role and that run with vinn diesel. That's because I really, really hate most 5e stuff that is made to watch. The DM for those has his problems, and only one voice actor (Krog?) is even decent voice-wise.

My friends say the yogscast does a good one, but I watched when they were new to rpg's and it was extremely cringy. Acquisitions Incorporated is on the good end of pretty bad.

I record my own sessions as player or DM to review how I can do better, and I recommend it. I never realised how bad my 'uh's were. It satisfies that need for relatable content pretty well, too, and reframing things does a lot for you. There are free apps if you play in real life, and Windows 10 has a recorder if you're some kind of sad, skype- playing pseudohuman (I play both, it's the truth, don't take it personally).

To answer the question divorced from context, I really enjoy the Roll for Initiative podcast. It's focused on an earlier edition I've never played but is tons of fun and the hosts speak broadly, even if they all sound like 200 pound neckbeard grognards, you can tell they genuinely enjoy the conversation and know the material.

Also try Doralious and Associates ( not on escapist, fuck those guys. Creator website, YouTube, or bust), I Hit It With My Axe ( gotta settle for escapist, wish Zak would host elsewhere but since it isn't ongoing I understand), and if you just hit the bottom of the barrel, I really enjoy Unforgotten Realms even though I know it's garbage.

That would be a fucking amazing scene in a fantasy movie.

I mean, I understand the problem, that being that it wears out its welcome after about 2 scenes, the first being something kinda pirates of the caribean-esque, where two acrobatic characters are doing sweet flips and passing a weapon back and forth as they're otherwise outgunned, and the second is something like a boss battle where an entire party is forced to pass a sword around because it's the only weapon that can effectively harm a powerful enemy.

I think I'm going to design these encounters, now, actually.

Actually, thought better of it. This seems directly in line with the power level of the tome pact, probably slightly lower, depending on the poisons I create for this homebrew.

Pact of the Thorn
You gain the ability to secrete poison. whenever your flesh touches another creature's flesh. you can inject a poison you know the recipe of into that creature. The injection itself is painless and undetectable. The target must succeed on a constitution saving throw against your spellsave DC. If they fail, they experience the effect from a poison you know the recipe of. Your patron also provides you with three recipes of your choice from the beginner poison table.

Yeah, but that would necessitate a 6-level dip into bard, and my charisma is an 11. I don't know how useful he would be, since bards don't get Enlarge without magic secrets.
>>
>>46588876
What about two levels of artificer for potions of growth?
>>
How to get more castings of Web? I only get three max with my Arcane Trickster. I'm thinking he can try to steal a Wand of Web from a Drow society. I suppose that's the most obvious way - an additional 6 castings per day, although it requires attunement.

Aside from that, I suppose I could wish for cast at will but that's sort of cheating.
>>
>>46588805
Give the boss a Necklace of Smoke Bomb (Necklace of Fireballs that casts Fog Cloud instead).
>>
>>46588890

Huh. If the DM will allow it, that definitely sounds super useful.

So Dex, Wis and Con, do you still have something for Str to be actually called grappling monk?

So I bought this on amazon, did I just waste $12?

You did.
But can you please scan it and upload it? I've been looking for it for months.

Only if you don't share it

Bard gives you cutting words and expertise at level 3.

At level 6 you get enlarge person, but we're talking mostly about the level 3 feature here. I think purely based on cutting words, bard is a better expertise monkey than rogue.
>>
>>46587063
Shit, get your double negatives in order, I have no idea what you're actually trying to say.
>>
I have a Paladin 2 / Warlock 3 using Shilelagh / cantrips / Smite to make melee attacks. I cast GFB and swing for d8+Cha (weapon damage) +d8 (GFB), +d6 (Hex) + 2d8 (Smite from a lvl 1 spell slot) plus d8+Cha to a secondary target. Which of those dice would I be able to reroll with Great Weapon Fighting Style? Just the d8 from the quarterstaff (and therfore I'd be better with Dueling style)?
>>
So, I'm making a spider-themed Arcane Trickster Rogue.

Cantrips
>mage hand
>green flame blade
>poison spray
>custom webshot cantrip: ranged spell attack that blinds or retrains creature until end of their next turn

As for my general illusion/enchantment spells, I'm not taking anything special, but to go with the spider theme, at level 8, I'm taking Web. I'm thinking of taking Rope Trick at level 14.

I'm hoping to steal a pair of Slippers of Spiderclimb and a Wand of Web (for the extra castings). Is there another attunement item that would be thematically appropriate?

Anything else you all can think of that will synergize well with the Web spell?
>>
>>46589372
>restraining people on a cantrip

Sounds like you'll be the unquestionable star of the show.
>>
>>46589395
It does no damage and it's only until the end of their turn. Is it too much? I suggested just killing 10 feet of movement but my DM suggested the above effect instead.
>>
>>46588931

Post-variant-human stat modifications, I'm at 18 str, 16 dex, 14 con, 12 int, 16 wis, 12 cha. I picked Toughness for my feat, because the character is based on Equius.

>>46589293
I was looking at a 2-3 level dip tops. 6 levels means I lose out on my Quivering Palm, as well as getting only 2 uses of cutting words, and not casting spells with a save DC/spell attack.
>>
>>46589372
Vitriolic Sphere might be nice if you make it to 20th level.
>>
>>46589372
>>46589428
>custom webshot
DESU I'd just reflavour Lightning Lure / Ray of Frost to have a cantrip that affected movement rather than homebrew something potentially broken. Booming Blade too maybe?

So pic related and some neat interactions of Fighter 2/Warlock 2/Sorcerer 3 (notedly, in order, a dude clonking about in heavy armour, Eldritch Blasting his way through - Agonizing and Repelling Blast, using an Action Surge! for another volley, using Quickened Metamagic for yet another volley) has me wondering how well I could **continue** building the blasty dude.

Bear with me. Because while it looks like a one-trick pony (shoot the mans), I kind of want to expand on his options, but I am not sure how to do this. Or do this *well*, rather.

Increasing Fighter levels is a good idea - feat options, focussing on increasing stats, the odd feat for out-of-combat utility or general surviavility is all dandy. But what path to focus on? Champion generally assumes weapon attacks, which Eldritch Blast isn't. Battle Master has all of four maneuvers which do not involve weapon attacks (Feinting Attack, Evasive Footwork, Commander's Strike, lolrally) so it may not be a great option to consider. I don't even know how to consider Eldritch Knight beyond 'lol more spell slots to burn,' which may be a consideration of its own.

Warlock then? Pact boon at L3 can be useful, but I only see Pact of the Tome being of major use.

Sorceror? More spells to burn, I guess? Some utility?

I'm a scrub, and at a loss how to further flesh this shit out, obviously.

>killing 10 feet of movement
Literally just take Ray of Frost then. Maybe ask if you can change the damage type to like bludgeoning or poison or something?
>>
>>46589463

Sorc for the bonus sorc points and more spells.
>>
>>46589458
Not the samefag, but discussed this in previous threads. It was the homebrew suggestion of the DM.
>>
>>46589458
>>46589395

Maybe just the blinding effect then. The inspiration for the cantrip was to cast it and use Mage Hand Legerdemain on Cunning Action to pickpocket against disadvantage.

>>46589483
Yeah, after figuring out what I wanted it to do, I checked the wiz cantrips to see if anything already did that and Ray of Frost indeed seemed to be the best candidate.
>>
>>46589463
Sorcerer, easily. More levels gives you more Sorcery points to Quicken with, and more spell slots to burn. Which type of sorcerer are you? Taking a third level of Warlock for higher Pact Magic and Pact of the Tome is very worthwhile but beyond that I wouldn't go any further. Maybe Warlock 4 for an ASI since you're triple classed.
>>
>>46589549
>>46589498
Cheers. I actually considered Fighter for the maneuvers and the feats for utility, but more blasty is always great.

Probably Chaos, since we don't have any other access to sorcerous bloodlines yet, but considering the Fervant Soul-esque variant actually GIVES spells, we're probably not expanding our bloodlines without tweaking them regardless.
>>
>>46588543
Hey! After that, for general rpg media wank, the gamers: dorkness rising, and journeyquest. And if you don't care for Critical Role, don't discount the rest of the list; the best is the escapist stuff.

Is there any edition that's done voodoo dolls? I want to include them as a possibility for my players, but also want it to be generally balanced, and seeing how past editions have handled them might help.
